As individuals and as a Church, we are a community: ROOTED in God; ## ANNUAL REPORT 2024 CALLED into faith and fellowship; and SENT OUT to love and serve our community. **1** ## **This page is intentionally left blank for printing purposes.** **2** ## **ECCLESIASTICAL PARISH OF KINGSWOOD** ## **ANNUAL REPORT OF THE PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST DECEMBER 2023** The **Parochial Church Council (PCC)** of the Benefice of Kingswood in the Diocese of Bristol, has the responsibility of promoting throughout the ecclesiastical parish the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. The PCC has maintenance responsibilities for the church buildings of Holy Trinity Church and The Church of the Ascension. This report, gives a summary of our activities in 2023 and seeks to celebrate all that God has been doing as well as demonstrate the good stewardship of our resources. ## **Overview of the Year** _“I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth….” 1 Corinthians 3:6_ 2023 is a year of Thanksgiving as we celebrate all that God has been doing in our church family and our community. We have seen growth in so many ways and whilst we recognise the hard work of so many to make this possible, we humbly remember that it is only through the work of the Holy Spirit that transformation happens. So we continue to place prayer and listening to God at the heart of our work as we seek to respond to what He is doing and allow God to guide our efforts. We have seen growth in the number of people joining our church family, many of whom are new to faith and new to church. We seek to offer worship in different styles, with a focus on belonging, making Jesus known and building community. Our new EXPLORE service complements Messy Church and our traditional services, catering particularly for those new to church or wanting to explore faith in a more interactive and accessible way. We have seen Growth in discipleship, as Jesus invites us into a deeper relationship with Him. We have seen people come to faith for the first time and others experience the Holy Spirit afresh after years of coming to church, receive healing or encouragement and commit to living out their faith in everyday life. God encourages us as we make a difference in our community, providing a place of welcome and support through our toddler groups, Friends and Neighbours, Lunchbox and H.A.R.T.S. as well as our partnership with We are BS15, sharing the love of Jesus in tangible ways. We were excited to formally open the Queen Elizabeth II Peace Garden at Church of Ascension after a year of hard work by church and community members. We continue to build strong links with our local schools and were particularly excited to launch Experience Easter this year. **As always we thank every member of Church family who has in any way contributed to the Worship and Mission of our Churches, when we stop to take stock we realise just how much God has been doing in and through us as we seek to worship God and share the love of Jesus with each other and our community.** Signed: …………………… Date:…18th April 2024………. John Godfrey and Jill Ewans retired this year from regular ministry. John continues as LLM Emeritus, leading Celtic Worship once a quarter at the Church of the Ascension. We give our immeasurable thanks to John and Jill for their ministry and service across the parish for so many years. David Prosser has joined the team in a lay capacity leading on aspects of mission and outreach, including Explore, Schools work and Discipleship. In June, we sadly said ‘Goodbye’ to Jill Ewans as she retired from her role as Parish Administrator after 25 years of faithful service and we welcomed Jenny Cresswell as Team Administrator, supporting the Ministry Team across Kingswood and Hanham as well as managing the Kingswood Parish Office. 20| ## **WORSHIP AND DISCIPLESHIP** 2023 has been another year of adventure for us as Church as we have sought to follow God and nurture, organise and develop our worship and mission in Kingswood. Though not an exhaustive list, here are some of the highlights from last year alongside our regular pattern of worship and groups. **5** January – We stepped into 2023 with excitement and faith and embarked upon our familiar pattern of Services. On the first Sunday of the month we continued to worship with our brothers and sisters from Hanham Parish at our **‘Together to Worship’** Services and on the second Sunday of the month **Messy Church** bringing many families together for activities, food and celebration of our amazing, loving, powerful God as we nurture seeds of faith. February began with another beautiful **Service of Light for Candlemas** at St George Hanham Abbots, Led by the Holy Trinity singers. March – as we travelled through the **season of Lent** , on Sundays and in midweek Lent groups we focused upon seeking to be ‘Open’… to transformation/to God/to each other/to creation and to ourselves’. We also launched **Experience Easter** – a new initiative for schools. inviting the children to experience the events of Holy Week and Easter through interactive discussion and activities inside and outside the church. This was a great success which we hope to grow and offer to more schools. April – **Holy Week** began with a choral journey to the cross of Christ by the Holy Trinity Singers and included a reflective service at Church of the Ascension, a performance of the St Luke Passion by the St George Singers, Stations of the Cross at Christ Church, an Agape Supper on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday reflections. **Messy Easter** took place inside Holy Trinity Church for the first time, where over 60 adults and children shared in the gospel story of Christ’s death and resurrection. Our **Easter trail in Kingswood Park** was again embraced by our community with over 100 children following the Easter Story on video through their smartphones. The trail finished at Holy Trinity Church Hall where they were able to discover more of the meaning of Easter through crafts and a take home Easter Story book. May - the **Coronation of King Charles III** and Queen Camilla was celebrated with a sung service of prayers for the King on the eve of the coronation, including a fantastic performance of Zadok the Priest, led by the Holy Trinity Singers; a Coronation Tea Party for church family and friends hosted by Church of the Ascension for the Parish and on Sunday, we joined with the local community for ‘Picnic in Kingswood Park’, providing arts and crafts for hundreds of children and refreshments in the church hall. During May we also held our annual **service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving** attended by members of H.A.R.T.S bereavement support group and families connected through funerals in church and at local crematoria. May ended with the **grand opening of the Queen Elizabeth II Peace Garden at Church of the Ascension.** Many months of hard work by Church and Community were celebrated as the garden was officially opened by children from Beacon Rise School. At the end of June we welcomed **Jenny Cresswell, our Team Administrator** who has been an incredible support to the team, helping us bring our systems and processes into the 21st century, and particularly supporting the planning of our weekly worship, improving our communications and presence online. July we formally welcomed **Rev Kathy Prosser** on her ordination and appointment as Curate to the Benefice of Hanham and Kingswood. Rev Kathy is largely based at Holy Trinity Kingswood, she also regularly leads and preaches at our monthly Together to Worship service. August we had a **Parish Weekend at Emmaus House** , an encouraging weekend of teaching led by Rev Andy Shuman and fellowship together. **6** During September and October we celebrated **‘Creationtide’** with a focus on climate emergency – alongside weekly sermons and prayer ideas, we held midweek worship, talks and discussions as we celebrated the wonder of our God who created ALL things, our responsibility to care for his Creation and how we can bear witness in how we live and speak out for change. PCC signed up to Eco Church and is working towards our Bronze award, thank you to Rev Chris Evans for leading this important work. Our Creationtide also included a ‘Bio Blitz’ where a number of families braved the wind and rain to count the different species of flora and fauna in the Holy Trinity churchyard, the biodiversity is to be celebrated. Our **Harvest Celebrations** focussed on support for our local Foodbank as we gave thanks for God’s provision in our lives. We held a special, Harvest and Puddings service at Holy Trinity where the choir led us in some old-school Harvest favourites, the service attracted a good number of extra visitors to church. October began with a very special TTW service and full immersion **baptism for three adults: Matt, Zahra and Mardi,** their testimonies of how God had called them as followers of Jesus and how they faithfully responded were a blessing and encouragement to us all. In October we launched a new service – **EXPLORE** ; a fresh expression of Church designed to encourage and support discipleship for those new to a ‘church’ experience and to Christian faith. Our vision for Explore is sustaining, deepening and shaping a discipleship culture by creating a welcoming and safe space to explore Christian faith and discipleship, rooted in prayer and scripture. November – Holy Trinity once again opened its doors to share something of our passion with our community – the **Organ festival** invited people to find out more about the history and capability of this beautiful instrument. There were organ recitals during the day and a chance to ‘have a go’ at playing the organ. A number of children came along and were excited and inspired, one has gone on to have organ lessons, a possible organist of the future. December – Was as always busy, kicking off with a new **‘Festive Fred’ activity afternoon** and an amazing **service of light with the Advent Antiphons** sung by the choir. We welcomed Beaconrise, Park Nursery School and Park School for their Christmas Celebrations at Holy Trinity Church and the Scouts to Church of the Ascension for a Christingle Service. John Cabot Learning Federation were also welcomed back to Holy Trinity for a Christmas Concert. **Messy Christmas** brought Messy Church and Holy Trinity together for a Nativity Service – crazy and fun, finishing with 75 people age 0-90 sitting together for Christmas Lunch. Building on the success of last year and with the weather much more amenable, **Carols at the Cross Keys pub** had 40 people singing together in the car park. It was a great opportunity for conversation about the meaning of Christmas and a few people came along to other Christmas services as a result. We relaunched **Carols in Kingswood Park** for the first time since Covid and were staggered that over 100 people attended. With a message of Jesus bringing light and hope to all as we stood in the dark, holding our candles and singing. **Carols by Candlelight** at Holy Trinity Church brought together so many strands of the life of our parish and the fruit of much that the Holy Spirit has been doing throughout the year, the church was full of all ages singing of the joy and hope that was born in Jesus Christ on that first Christmas – Emmanuel, God with us. **7** **Explore experimented with a new approach to Christingle** which worked well with much to build on for next year. The year finished with our Christmas Communion services – _“The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth’ John 1:14_ Throughout the year we have been blessed in our worship by the work of our musicians: Jim Williams, John Cottle and the Holy Trinity Singers have led us beautifully in our choral tradition at Holy Communion and Evensong as well as our festivals and special services, they are a gift which God sustains and we cherish. Pat Robson has beautifully supported the worship at Church of the Ascension with the organ and occasional guitar, playing familiar hymns and some she has composed herself. **Pat’s Christmas Sing-a-long** was as ever well supported and a fun addition to our Christmas Calendar. David Prosser, Colin Owen and Leta Hutchins have come together to lead worship for Messy Church and Explore and play an important role helping to engage young people and their families in sung worship. We give thanks and praise to God for all the new people that have joined our Church family in the last year or so, across all our services, and for the joy of seeing people old and young, grow in their faith and love of Jesus. We continue to pray for all that God is doing through and among us as we grow as disciples and share our faith with others. ## **CHILDREN AND FAMILIES** Jesus said “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” Matthew 19:14 We have a particular calling and heart for sharing the Good News of Jesus with children and their families, inviting them to know that Jesus loves them and praying that they will embark on a life-long, personal relationship with Him. ## We run **two toddler groups: Little Stars at Church of the Ascension and Cafe Tots at Holy Trinity Church.** Each offers a safe welcoming environment for children 0-4 years to play and learn to socialise with other children. Parents and grandparents also benefit from a chance to chat with others and make friends. Our dedicated team of volunteers often provide a listening ear or offer of prayer when needed. The groups support a number of children with special needs, as well as parents and carers in need of practical and pastoral support. During the year we introduced the Christian Festivals and a few Bible stories as well as inviting families to join us at Messy Church and other appropriate services. **Messy Church** has had another year of meeting many new families as well as families who have been joining with us for a while, most months 40-50 come along to Messy Church and all receive a warm welcome. **8** We have lots of fun, fellowship, great food and most of all we share God’s love and grace, through conversations, crafts and activities, music and precious time together. This year we have looked at varying themes from Creation to caring for our world, remembrance and prayer. Thankful and grateful we have a strong established, committed, hard working, energetic and faithful team who give their all every month. But we are very keen for more help and support to lighten the load, if anyone is interested? ## **MISSION** We are called to share the love of Jesus with our neighbours locally and across the world. **The Mission Support Group** meets regularly throughout the year to plan various fund raising (but also just as importantly) social events. The money raised from these events, along with 10% of your weekly/ monthly giving go to support Church Mission at home and abroad. Within the last year, the following were twice sent cheques of £150 each. - • - The Church Army, The Friendship clinic Nepal, - • Embrace Middle East • Mercy Ships; • Mission to Seafarers • Mission Aviation Fellowship • • Maji Safi* Community of the Sisters of the Church (Ashley Road, Bristol) * This includes the ‘Penny Collection’. Unfortunately since the Covid situation cards are now used more than cash, but anything, however small is always appreciated. At Christmas 2023 cheques of £150 were also sent to ‘We are BS15’ and ‘Caring at Christmas’. The Mission Group also attempts to offer financial support to major World disasters and during 2023 donations were sent to the Moroccan earthquake and the Libya floods- each received £250 as a one-off donation. The next AGM is planned for Tuesday 23rd April- new members to the Mission Support Group are always welcome. _Kathryn Gulliford_ Through our partnership with **We are BS15** , we are now supporting over 150 people a week with food, friendship, practical and wellbeing support through the Kingswood Kitchen, Food Club and Trinity Garden. Church members volunteer in practical ways as well as supporting them in financial donations and prayer. Our generous support of Kingswood Foodbank also makes a real difference to people at times of crisis. In November, we opened the Church Hall for 10 nights to provide emergency accommodation for refugees, this was at the request of South Gloucestershire Council. We were able to step in when all other doors were closed. **9** ## **PASTORAL CARE** The Pastoral Care Team continue to provide support and visits to those in our church family who are no longer able to come to church regularly or who need other practical or pastoral support, including taking Home Communion where appropriate and visits in hospital. **Friends and Neighbours** meets fortnightly at Church of Ascension to enjoy each other’s company and a range of speakers and home spun entertainment. There is always, Tea and Cake as well as occasional meals and good cheer! **H.A.R.T.S.** our bereavement group offers support, friendship and a listening ear to those bereaved recently or longer ago. We do not provide counselling but a place and a space where folk can be alongside others to share their stories and give mutual support. All of our volunteers have experienced bereavement themselves. Referrals are by personal invitation, advertising of group but also via social care and GP surgeries. The group has had a number of new members over the past year, some just for a few sessions and others for longer. Numbers are around 1015, some also come back to church or join in with other church activities. **Lunch Box** continues to flourish, Lisa Pearce now manages the catering and Rev Chris Evans provides pastoral oversight, with a dedicated team of volunteers. Numbers average 15-22, with folk coming from a wide variety of backgrounds and needs. In addition to a meal and a warm, safe place to be, friendships are made and it gives an opportunity for those living alone to have a shared meal and conversation. Alongside fellowship it has been possible to develop a deeper rapport pastorally with those in need of a listening ear and support, and an opportunity to invite folk to other church activities such as bereavement group, concerts and special services as at Christmas. We have not increased our price of £2.50 to ensure all can afford the cost, and all profits are donated back into the church general funds. ## **SAFEGUARDING REPORT – MARY WHYATT, PARISH SAFEGUARDING OFFICER** The Parish of Kingswood is committed to safeguarding children, young people and adults at risk. The Parish Safeguarding Policy was reviewed on 20th Sept 2023 and will be reviewed again in September 2024. During the current year the PCC has reviewed and approved the list of our church activities and our procedure for dealing promptly with allegations and complaints. We have made considerable progress in implementing our safer recruitment process, although it is now imbedded in most of our church activities, it remains a priority for 2024. DBS checks are now required every 3 years for PCC members and leaders of activities for children, young people and vulnerable adults. DBS checks have been carried out and completed for these roles and are currently up to date. Four levels of safeguarding training are provided by the Diocese: Basic Awareness – required by all church officers and volunteers Foundation – required by Churchwardens, PCC members, Parish Safeguarding Officer and all volunteers working with vulnerable groups in any capacity. Leadership – required by Churchwardens, Parish Safeguarding Officer, Licensed Lay Ministers and Leaders of Church Activities. **10** Awareness of Domestic Abuse – required by PCC members, Churchwardens, Parish Safeguarding Officer, Licensed Lay Ministers and volunteers working with children, young people and vulnerable adults. All training must be repeated every 3 years. Leadership training is currently up to date and Foundation training for those who need to renew their training and those who have not yet completed it, has been booked for September 2024. During the year there have been two safeguarding matters which were referred to the Diocesan Safeguarding Team for advice and support. Both of these matters have been handled primarily by the Diocese. The PCC receives regular Safeguarding Reports and has been kept up to date with the progress of the Action Plan, which has recently been upgraded to level 3, the highest level. Level 3 could not have been achieved without the support of clergy, PCC members, Activity Leaders and all volunteers who assist in our church activities in any capacity and I would like to extend my thanks to them all. The coming year will provide new challenges as we strive to achieve the requirements of this new level. ## **GOVERNANCE AND RESOURCES** ## **CHURCHWARDEN – GILL GODFREY** Another year has passed with so many blessings to the Parish. A big thank you to the team for all the dedication and visions that are now producing fruit. It is only when God’s calling is held and we are willing to act, that through the Holy Spirit He enables us to do his work. The Area Dean carried out the Tri-annual Inspection on behalf of the Archdeacon on 5th October 2023, we passed with an almost clean bill of health. The main outstanding item was the need for a Fire Risk Assessment and procedures for Holy Trinity Church, which has now been completed. Jacquie Owen has ably led this work and will shortly be seeking volunteers to train to be fire stewards for our larger services. The fabric at Holy Trinity has had much needed jobs done or are being arranged to be done this year. As we work together, the arduous tasks when shared become less stressful. A special thank you to all those who decorated the hall recently and thanks to Alann Coombs for the wonderful work of replacing the fence around the boiler house. There is nothing to report on fabric at Ascension but plans for re-decorating the chancel are in hand. There are so many willing people at both churches who have worked so hard throughout the year giving time and gifts to enable the parish to flourish. Thank you everyone, you know who you are and as we work as a family may we continue to look to God and thank him for his faithfulness. I would like to finish with something for us all to pray about. The Parish is growing and the need for another church warden is becoming more urgent. If you feel God is nudging you (and don’t be afraid, if I can do it so can you) please talk to Beverley or myself. Even to shadow for a year would be great. **11** I would like to finish with a saying you may be familiar with. Pope John XX111 said: “Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in, but with what it is still possible for you to do.” What you hold, may you hold, what you do, may you do and not stop ....... believing nothing, agreeing with nothing that would dissuade you from your commitment or would place a stumbling block for you on the way.” Blessings to you all and thank you for your support – Gill ## **FINANCE REPORT – JOHN GODFREY, PARISH TREASURER** The maintenance of the Parish Finances are the responsibility of the treasurers of the six different bank accounts across the two churches in the Kingswood Parish. The overall responsibility is held by the PCC treasurer, John Godfrey, who prepares the overall annual Parish accounts. Heartfelt thanks go to all our treasurers and to the independent examiners of the accounts for all the work they do on our behalf. Our true parish income for 2023 was £120,469 an increase of £18,340 on the 2022 level and our expenditure for 2023 was £95,671 an increase of £12,369 on the 2022 level. True income/expenditure excludes all inter-account trading such as various fees, donations for mission, administration from the churches within our parish. Our cash balances at the end of 2023 were unrestricted - £75,828 and restricted - £170,746 which was an increase of £25,287.34 on 2022 made up mainly from rent receipt £11,120 from the parish house (this includes the transfer of the Vicar & Churchwarden’s account into the parish level accounts of £3453), £1,248 from ASC, £14,482 from HTK and -£1,563 from HTK Restoration. The main financial highlights of the Kingswood Parish for 2023 have been as foNows:. Fund hi PARISH LEVEL The overall balan￿ for this fund increased by £11120.29 in 2023 due mainly to rent received from 36 Elmfield but there were small maintenance costs on the propety during the year. Also the balance of the Vicar & Churchwarden's account was transferred into the events fund within Ihe parish level accounts. The income from the rent on 36 Elm￿ld was used to support the employment of a parish administrator. There were no signffjcant high1￿h1$ in the Mission accounts. The all(Trt￿n of funds to charities is managed by the Mission Support Group under the direction of the PCC. HOLY TRINITY CHURCH Overall fund balance for HTK increased in 2023 to £31910. The parish share figure raised for 2023 was £18,000 which was £625 shorter than that requested by the dicthse. The budget for 2024 shows a parish share figure of £18,570. A legacy of £12,300 was also feceived in 2023. HTK RESTORATION A small decrease in the balance for this fund (£563) which was due to Ihe ￿pair work carried out in the chancel area. Expendtture in the year has covered maintenance in the main church hall. CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION The overall fund balance increased slightly by £1248 in 2023.
