As individuals and as a Church, we are a community: ROOTED in God; CALLED into faith and fellowship; and SENT OUT to love and serve our community. **1** **ECCLESIASTICAL PARISH OF KINGSWOOD** ## **ANNUAL REPORT OF THE PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST DECEMBER 2022** The **Parochial Church Council (PCC)** of the Benefice of Kingswood in the Diocese of Bristol, has the responsibility of promoting throughout the ecclesiastical parish the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. The PCC has maintenance responsibilities for the church buildings of Holy Trinity Church and The Church of the Ascension. This report, gives a summary of our activities in 2022 and seeks to celebrate all that God has been doing as well as demonstrate the good stewardship of our resources. ## **Overview of the Year** 2022 has been a year of great blessing, with much to celebrate as we see God at work in our Parish. - We have seen new people come to faith and join our church family. Although we have sadly said ‘Goodbye’ to some much loved church members, we have also welcomed new members to each of our congregations; - The range of services we offer from Book of Common Prayer Choral Evensong to Messy Church and everything in between, seeks to invite people to meet with God in a meaningful way and experience a living, loving relationship with Jesus through the Holy Spirit. - work with children and young families continue to grow with attendance at Messy Church up 40% as well as more families deepening their faith and love of Jesus; - Our profile in our local community continues to grow as they see their local church as a place where they will find love and acceptance, a place where life is happening and everyone is welcome. During 2022, Kathy Prosser has continued to serve and learn among us as an Ordinand, training for ordained ministry at Sarum College. She has been a blessing to the parish and the team and we are pleased to say that she will continue to serve in our Benefice as Curate following her ordination in July 2023. Rev Chris Evans was on sabbatical from July – September and reflects: _“The Sabbatical enabled me to have a break from active ministry and to use the space to reflect more deeply on my calling by the Lord into ministry and where He may be leading me. It was a time of spiritual journeying, of structured and unstructured retreat space, theological reading, and of course, prayer. 19| **4** **MISSION AND OUTREACH** _**Declare His glory among the nations, and his marvelous deeds among all people. 1 Chronicles 16:24**_ ## **Sharing God’s story** 2022 was a busy, fun year as many events returned following two years of COVID impacts. We focus our efforts on two key outreach events during the year, taking the opportunity to share the Good News of Jesus’ birth, death and resurrection. Building on the success of The Great Easter Stone Hunt, in 2022 we partnered with Freedom Church to run an Easter Trail in Kingswood Park. Over 180 children completed the trail and took part in activities reinforcing the story of Easter. Several new families joined Messy Church following the easter event. December saw the first closure of the high street for a Christmas Market in Kingswood. To make sure we were at the centre of the events, we moved our Christmas Trail – Nativity Heros to the shopping centre area and based ourselves at the Moravian church for Christmas crafts and activities. Our presence, brought many families to the High Street and was recognized as a key contributor to the overall success of the event. Over 250 children and their families heard the wonderful story of God come to dwell among His people and ‘Emanual’ was the secret code word to collect their prize. Again it was an opportunity to promote Messy Christmas and we had over 70 attend the following week. Through kind donations of the congregation and of the Mothers’ Union, many homes in Kingswood now have Christmas and Easter storybooks to share with their children. Rev Chris organised an excellent Carols in the Pub at the Cross Keys opposite the Church of the Ascension. This was a great success, with some of the drinkers joining us outside for a good singalong even though the weather was cold. The event was well received and supported by the pub and has helped to raise the profile of the church with the regulars and the community – definitely one to be repeated. The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June was another great opportunity to celebrate with our community. We joined the community celebration in the park, making crafts and distributing 400 copies of ‘The Servant Queen’ a beautiful book sharing memories of the long and dedicated reign of our Sovereign Queen and of her deep personal faith in Jesus that sustained her throughout. Sadly, the queen died later that year, and Holy Trinity Church would become a focal point for people to pay their respects during the period of public mourning. Over one hundred people visited the church and signed the book of condolences and the children at Messy Church made beautiful flowers in memory the late Queen. The Holy Trinity singers provided a beautiful musical backdrop to our Service of Remembrance for the Queen. **5** ## **Sharing God’s love** February 2022 saw the horrific invasion of **Ukraine** by Russian forces and the displacement of millions of people, mainly women and children. The Church family immediately supported the relief effort with financial donations and we worked with South Gloucestershire Council to provide a welcome hub for people arriving to stay with host families in the county. It transpired that numbers of Refugees being settled in Kingswood was quite small but we were able to support them and welcome one into our church family. We continue to be a key partner in **We are BS15.** By providing our buildings, our faithful volunteers and our prayers, we touch so many lives in the community: feeding the hungry, tackling poverty and isolation and supporting people with friendship, prayer and practical support. The Community Kitchen has been running since June 2021, and served over 1300 meals in 2022. The number of meals served has increased dramatically since the cost-of-living crisis and the kitchen now provides around 70 meals a week to people across our community. The Growing Space behind the church hall had its first harvest providing a fantastic range of vegetables for the meals in the Kitchen, with plenty of excess for the new Community Fridge. Funding from Southern Brooks enabled us to make the Church Hall available for a warm space run alongside the community Fridge every Thursday, with 70-80 people attending each week. The Year ended with a Community Christmas Party and the Church Choir came along to round off the day with carols. The St George Singers have adopted We are BS15 as their charity for the year from Dec 2022 Another important partnership for the Parish continues to be **Mothers’ Union** . Although Kingswood Parish no longer has an active branch of Mothers’ Union, members continue to provide the supportive link between the Diocese of Bristol Mothers’ Union and Kingsmeadow@MadeForever, the community hub on the edge of the parish. The hub is open to anyone six days a week with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The relatively small team of paid staff do an amazing job organising many different activities to suit diverse needs and interests. A central principle of Mothers’ Union is to support family life and especially those who have met with adversity. This year has seen a dramatic increase in families experiencing economic hardship. Mothers’ Union members from the Diocese have provided items for well over 100 emergency hygiene kits free to anyone who needs them. It is of concern that children’s dental health in particular, has suffered drastically in the past few years. Providing toothpaste and toothbrushes is a small thing that can be done to help with this. Personal hygiene is essential for health and the provision of toiletries is a simple way to show our love for the disadvantaged. Last summer the Diocese of Bristol Mothers’ Union sponsored two coaches for families to spend a day out at Weston-super-Mare. Some of the families cannot afford to travel beyond Bristol. They had a lovely time and it was a joy to see their happy, if tired faces at the end of the day. The staff are hoping that we can do the same this year and we have had an indication that it will happen. Although members are very generous with their gifts, continuing prayer is needed not just for these families but also for individuals seeking support from the hub through difficult times and for the staff and volunteers at the hub who work so hard to provide support to the whole community. During 2022, our regular groups returned to full swing and are growing significantly post covid. **HARTS,** Continues monthly, over tea and cakes, offering a warm welcome and safe space for those bereaved either recently or longer ago to share stories of pain and loss as people feel comfortable to do so, and supporting each other. We have links with social care services in welcoming bereaved people who are struggling with the pain of loss. **6** **Lunchbox** relaunched with a new team in December 2021, has lost some much loved members this year but has also seen many new people join. Every Wednesday we offer a meal and, more importantly, an opportunity for those living alone to share a meal and conversations with others and to forge friendships. Our dedicated team are always on hand to offer support and a listening ear where needed. Numbers are growing, often 15-16 in recent months. **Friends and Neighbours** have been able to meet through much of the year as a support group and have enjoyed, Cream Teas, bingo, quizzes and other activities, most importantly, they have enjoyed each other’s’ company. At points when they were unable to meet, the Friends and Neighbours Team continued to provide support with fun care packages containing activities and edible treats. **Mission Support Group –** During 2022, the Parish continued to support a number of charities at home and abroad. - • - Church Army, Friendship clinic Nepal, - • • Euro Evangelism (aka Transform Mercy Ships; • - Europe Network) Mission Aviation Fellowship - • Mission to Seafarers, • Embrace the middle east. We also support a number of local charities at Christmas; Caring at Christmas, East Bristol Foodbank and Sisters of the Church. With our penny collection we support the Maji Safi Bursary fund. During the year we made one-off Donations to The British Red Cross to support relief in Ukraine (#500) and the Pakistan Emergnecy Appeal (£250). As well as our money all of these groups, organisations and people need our prayers. Finally thank you for your support. The money that you give has a direct impact on people’s lives and spreads our church’s gospel message in a practical way at home and abroad. _Cath Hayer_ ## **Caring for God’s planet** The Community Garden at Church of Ascension has been named the Queen Elizabeth II Peace Garden and will be formally opened in May 2023. This past year has seen a great commitment by our amazing team of volunteers from both the Church and the local community. The hard work is almost complete and the site is taking shape. The woodland area is finished but will need ongoing maintenance and more planting of native woodland plants. The nature garden, to attract bees and butterflies is close to completion with four raised beds constructed from scaffolding boards donated by a local roofing firm. A path to lead to seating is being constructed at present and the ground is being prepared to plant a wild flower meadow. We received a grant of £1000 from Hanham Parish Council when they spotted our work in the local paper, this will be used to buy some butterfly and bee loving shrubs and seating. **7** ## **CHILDREN AND FAMILIES** _**“Come my children, listen to me; I will teach you the wonder of the Lord.” Psalm 34:11**_ We continue to prioritise our work with children and young families, seeing God’s blessing as they grow closer to Him. We now have two thriving toddler groups: **Little Stars** at Church of the Ascension and **CafeTots** at Holy Trinity Church. As well as a place for children and adults to have fun and make friends, it also provides an opportunity where those needing support can receive help and a listening ear. As our groups grow in popularity careful planning is needed to maintain a safe space for children and adults. Our Toddler Groups are a place where the Church builds relationships with families through our team of dedicated volunteers. We share our Christian faith and celebrate our Christian Festivals together. Many of the families also come along to our Easter and Christmas trails and some have come for baptism or moved from Toddler Groups to Messy Church. We still have a good connection with the **Scout group at Church of Ascension** and a Christingle service was held just before Christmas with the church being filled with all the parents and church congregation. **Messy Church** continues to go from strength to strength, numbers attending are up 40% and, more importantly, families are going deeper into relationship with Jesus. In 2023 we will introduce a second opportunity in the month for families to gather and worship together in a fun, informal way with more opportunity to discuss questions from scripture and to share food together, Café style. Messy Christmas brought over 80 people together for a raucous, interactive Nativity and Christmas Lunch. It was lovely to see Messy Church families and other members of Holy Trinity and Church of Ascension coming together for this special service. It made Christmas!. Our new policy for the **Baptism of Children** was implemented in January 2022 and has generally been well received by both the church members and the baptism families. The re-introduction of baptism into the regular Sunday morning worship on the 4th Sunday of the month, usually at Holy Trinity Church enables the church family to welcome and engage more with the baptism family. The service of morning worship with Baptism seeks to be welcoming to those who may be unfamiliar with 'church'. On receiving an enquiry the family are visited at their homes to discuss the meaning of baptism and the process. If they wish to proceed, they are invited to a monthly baptism preparation which takes place on a Sunday afternoon and is led by Rev Chris and Rev Steve as possible. At the same time the link between baptism families and Cafe Tots, Little Stars and Messy church is promoted. **8** **WORSHIP AND DISCIPLESHIP** _**All the nations you have made will come and worship before you, Lord; they will bring glory to your name. Fir you are great and do marvelous deeds; you alone are God. Psalm 86:9-10**_ Our worship pattern launched in 2021 continues to provide arange of worship opportunities across the Parish and the Benefice. We are blessed great, talented musicians and singers to support us across both churches in the parish. At the **Church of the Ascension** our organist, Pat Robson is a gem with all her talents. She often leads a small guitar group which makes the worship very special. Her talents extend to her own compositions (27 in all) and it is a joy to sing so many of them. Thank you Pat, for your continued support and blessing. At **Holy Trinity Church** , we have a choir and musicians of superb quality to support our worship and special services through the Church choir, Holy Trinity Singers and St George Singers. Thank you to Jim Williams, John Cottle and all the singers for their hard work and continued support. The Choir has provided an amazing range of music for all our festival services throughout the year, new services this year were the Candlemas in January at St George’s, Hanham Abbots and the Advent Antiphons at the end of November. Both services brought together music, light and liturgy to transport us deeper into the presence of God and were a blessing not just to church family but also visitors. This year we completed the revision of our traditional service booklets and our special thanks go to John Cottle for his liturgical and technical skills as well as a lot of printing and stapling. Holy Trinity was gifted a new cruet set for Holy communion in memory of Patricia Lewis which was commissioned at Midnight Communion. The yearly service of **Thanksgiving and Remembrance** was well attended and those joining us always express how helpful they find it to light a candle for their loved ones and to place their name on the prayer tree. **Together to Worship** is our monthly, contemporary service where we come together with the Parish of Hanham for Benefice worship and is now well established. We are led in worship by Eley Dyson and the music group made up of members from both parishes. The service is very special, as the place where all our existing and our new congregations come together to worship as one body in Christ. The teaching is designed to deepen our relationship with Jesus through the Holy Spirit and equip us as disciples to follow Jesus in our everyday. After Easter we ran the **Alpha course** in the parish after a long break, supported by Rev Vicky Wicks who was on placement with us. Course attendees were a mixture of existing members and new people who rapidly created a lovely sense of community, exploring faith together. At the end of the course, we have continued to meet together for Bible Study, prayer, fellowship and lots of food as well as regularly attending Together To Worship. **9** We were excited to celebrate Lisa Pearce’s Baptism at Church of the Ascension and later confirmation in October by Bishop Viv. The **Pastoral Care Group** continues to make sure those who are housebound feel that they are still very much part of the church family and that any further support needs are brought to the attention of the clergy team. We have continued to commit to praying for our Church family and community; at home; opening the church for quiet prayer and reflection and through specific prayer days, we are ever grateful for our committed team of church watchers who make this possible. Colleen Mercer continues to coordinate the prayer chain on behalf of the church family of Holy Trinity and the Church of the Ascension. ## **SAFEGUARDING REPORT – MARY WHYATT, PARISH SAFEGUARDING OFFICER** The Parish of Kingswood is committed to safeguarding children, young people and adults at risk. The Parish Safeguarding Policy was reviewed on 15th Sept 2021 and will be reviewed again in September 2023. During the current year the PCC has reviewed and approved the list of our church activities, our procedure for dealing promptly with allegations and complaints and our policy on the use of Social Media. We are continuing to work on implementing our safer recruitment process and this remains a priority for 2023. DBS checks are now required every 3 years for PCC members and leaders of activities for children, young people and vulnerable adults. DBS checks have been carried out and completed for these roles and are currently up to date. Four levels of safeguarding training are provided by the Diocese: Basic Awareness – required by all church officers and volunteers Foundation – required by Churchwardens, PCC members, Parish Safeguarding Officer and volunteers working with vulnerable groups Leadership – required by Churchwardens, Parish Safeguarding Officer, Licenced Lay Ministers and Leaders of Church Activities. Awareness of Domestic Abuse – required by PCC members, Churchwardens, Parish Safeguarding Officer, Licenced Lay Ministers and volunteers working with children, young people and vulnerable adults. Training must be repeated every 3 years. Currently all training is up to date, with the exception of Basic Awareness, which will be a focus this summer. During the year there have been two safeguarding matters which have been referred to the Diocesan Safeguarding Team for advice and support. The PCC receives regular Safeguarding Reports and has been kept up to date with the progress of the Action Plan, which is currently at level 2. During the past year we have put demands on many volunteers to undertake the required level of **10** training for their roles. Some of this training was challenging and included the submission of written work. Without exception, everyone has been willing to attend sessions led by the Diocesan Safeguarding Team or to complete them on line and I would like to extend my grateful thanks for their commitment and support. ## **GOVERNANCE AND RESOURCES** ## **CHURCHWARDEN – GILL GODFREY** It has been a very busy year for the Parish and wonderful things are happening. There always seems to be something being organised with diaries being filled which is a sign that God is working his purpose out in our community. It has been a privilege to serve as your Church Warden and would like to thank everyone for all the hard work and diligence that has made our Parish thriving and “awake” to the Gospel truth, “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” I would also like to thank Beverley and the team for their support, even when I exasperate them we can always laugh. As we move forward I pray that God will continue to move in all our hearts to continue the good work he has given us to do. We are pleased to report that the following work was completed during the year. ## HOLY TRINITY CHURCH The Scout hall has been made safe by Carricks Ltd and a new lintel installed. Debris falling from the Chancel arch in the church has been repaired. A Quinquennial Inspection Report was done in October One of the panes in the side window of the office was replaced due to vandalism ## ASCENSION The trees in the church grounds have been pollarded A new lawn mower was purchased due to vandals stealing the old one. The Car Park at Holy Trinity has continued to cause significant problems, thank you to the amazing team that stand out in all weathers to manage the car park as best we can for funerals. We have finalized the plans for the new gates and the Diocese have agreed to fund their purchase and installation to improve the security of the site. ## **FINANCE REPORT – JOHN GODFREY, PARISH TREASURER** The maintenance of the Parish Finances are the responsibility of the treasurers of the six different bank accounts across the two churches in the Kingswood Parish. The overall responsibility is held by the PCC treasurer, John Godfrey, who prepares the overall annual Parish accounts. Heartfelt thanks go to all our treasurers and to the independent examiners of the accounts for all the work they do on our behalf. **11** Our true parish income for 2022 was £102,129 an increase of £24,192 on the 2021 level, this is mainly due to hall income and giving returning to pre-covid levels and grants received towards hall heating and the community garden. Expenditure for 2022 was £83,302 an increase of £3,825 on the 2021 level. True income/expenditure excludes all inter-account trading such as various fees, donations for mission, administration from the churches within our parish. Our cash balances at the end of 2022 were unrestricted - £68,079 and restricted - £161,198 which was an increase of £19,149 on 2021 made up mainly from rent receipt £7,348 from the parish house, £2,006 from ASC, £6,837 from HTK and £2,958 from HTK Restoration.
