# **ECCLESIASTICAL PARISH OF KINGSWOOD ANNUAL REPORT OF THE PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL** # **FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST DECEMBER 2021** ## **PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL** The Parochial Church Council (PCC) of the Benefice of Kingswood in the Diocese of Bristol, has the responsibility of promoting throughout the ecclesiastical parish the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. The PCC has maintenance responsibilities for the church buildings of Holy Trinity Church and The Church of the Ascension. This report, gives a summary of our activities in 2021 and seeks to celebrate all that God has been doing as well as demonstrate the good stewardship of our resources. **----- Start of picture text -----**

**1** ## **Overview** 2021 has been another year in which the global pandemic has continued to be more than a significant factor in the life of our Parish. We entered the third national lockdown on the 4[th] January 2021 and didn't emerge from most of these restrictions until 19[th] July. Unlike the sunny days of the previous lockdowns, January was dark and wet, we generally began the year in low spirits but God was ever faithful. As we journeyed through lent we traced God’s redeeming love, from calling His people out of slavery in Egypt to the beautiful vision of “all things made new” in the book of Revelation. We trusted that God would bring new encouragement from the frustrations of this latest lockdown, and He did. Highlights of 2021 include: - A deepening of our prayer life, both individually and as a parish; - New ways to worship, it has been a particular blessing to come ‘Together To Worship’ with our brothers and sisters in Hanham Parish; - Growing engagement with local families through our new Toddler Group – Little Stars and growth in Messy Church attendance; - Softening the boundaries between church and the community with events like the Easter Stone Hunt which attracted over 300 children and their families and the new Community Garden at Church of Ascension, where many new friendships have been made. - An amazing celebration of the 200[th] Anniversary of Holy Trinity Church. We pulled out all the stops for a summer Fayre and exhibition on the Saturday and a beautiful service with the Bishop of Bristol and invited guests on Sunday 11[th] September, followed by afternoon tea. Our closing observation is what an encouragement it is has been to stop and look back over 2021. With the Covid haze it has taken some effort to piece together all that Jesus has done for us and in us during the year. There has been so much encouragement and new life to come out of a season that might instinctively have been seen as one of stagnation or decline. We hope, as you read this report, you will also feel encouraged. As the Apostle Paul reminds us and as this annual report bears witness to, we serve a miraculous God and in him all things are possible… _Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! 20| ## **MISSION AND OUTREACH** _**As the Father has sent me, I am sending you. John 20:21**_ During 2021, our outreach and our desire to continue to connect with and serve our community has had to adapt to the continued constraints of COVID-19 restrictions. On Easter Saturday we launched our **‘Giant Community Easter Egg (stones) Hunt’** which saw hundreds of families running around Kingswood seeking out stones painted by our local school children and culminating in each child receiving a chocolate treat and an Easter Story book. We presented over 300 Goody Bags and recruited a few new members for Messy Church. By Christmas, we went hi - tec with our Nativity Trail, **Nativity Heros** , using QR codes to connect posters in the park drawn by children from Beacon Rise School, to a recording of the Christmas Story prepared by Year 6 from Park School. We extended the trail to 5 days and invited families to finish with crafts and activities in the Church Hall. These events give us an opportunity to share the story of Jesus with the next generation. Through this and the kind donation of the Mothers’ Union, many homes in Kingswood now have Christmas and Easter storybooks to share with their children. Aa lockdown restrictions began to ease the need for support through the COVID-19 BS15 Help (Kingswood) group was reducing. However, the experience of coming together as a community to support each other was much valued and **We are BS15 CIC** was born. It’s objective is to support projects that bring the community together to share skills and resources to support each other, encourage community spirit and reduce loneliness and isolation in the BS15 area. We as a church, are key partners in this and the first project – the Community Kitchen was launched at Holy Trinity in June 2021 and plans are underway for a Community Allotment behind the Church Hall. Another exciting new venture, led by Rev Chris Evans, is **the Community Garden** project based at Church of the Ascension. During the lockdowns, Chris noticed the lack of quiet places to sit and chat in the immediate local area. By advertising locally, a team of 8 people from the local community and of the church family got together in October to begin to transform what was an overgrown area of land at Church of Ascension into an area for both wildlife and local residents to enjoy. **5** The first stage was well underway by the end of the year,….clearing brambles to create a woodland space with feeding and nesting boxes and planting some woodland flowers. The second area for attracting bees and butterflies…and local residents…is stage two of the project. Linking with the local community has been as important as what we are trying to create, Beacon Rise school who are excited to use the area in the future as part of their nature studies, including planting a tree for the Queen’s jubilee and has re-established a link with the pub opposite the Church. The Garden has also been a means by which the church family can be reminded of our calling as Christians to care for God’s creation and has led to encounters and conversations with passers-by who want to find out about what we are up to. Our regular groups continued to be affected by Covid – 19 restrictions for much of 2021 but the teams continued to work hard to stay in contact with as many people as possible and provide support when needed: **HARTS** , our support group for the bereaved, has been running again since May. The group is coordinated by Colleen Mercer and Rev Chris. We have welcomed a few new members via funerals taken and from liaison with a Social Care Worker; it continues to provide a safe and supportive space where the sharing of tea and cakes enables a sharing of stories and sorrows in dealing with bereavement and loss. The **Thanksgiving and Remembrance service** was held again in October with wonderful singing and music from the choir; our thanks go to them for the way they lift this service for those attending. These services will hopefully revert in 2022 to being held in May as we leave behind the restrictions of the pandemic, just after Easter with its’ message of hope and resurrection. All names of loved ones are read out and the families have the opportunity to light their own candles of remembrance and place names and prayers on our prayer tree. This service connects not just with the families whose loved ones’ funerals we have taken but is open to all who have lost someone, either recently or longer ago. In October we were able to re-start **Lunch Box** again. We are ever grateful to Leta Hutchins and Eddie Simms for starting this wonderful group and running it faithfully, 51 weeks a year for nearly 30 years and to our new group of volunteers who have picked up the mantle. There had been frequent enquiries about it starting up again, an indication of how valuable individuals have found the opportunity to share a meal and conversation with others, often those living alone. It has been good to see again old faces and welcome some new faces. **Friends and Neighbours** have been able to meet through much of the year as a support group and have enjoyed, Cream Teas, bingo, quizzes and other activities, most importantly, they have enjoyed each other’s’ company. At points when they were unable to meet, the Friends and Neighbours Team continued to provide support with fun care packages containing activities and edible treats. **6** Sadly, the Holy Trinity and Church of Ascension branch of **Mothers’ Union** formally closed during 2021 as the group is now too small, but members continue to be active through our deanery links and continue to support for Kingsmeadow families at the Made for Ever Centre with toiletries and sanitary items. By summer 2021, numbers attending the **Refugee and Asylum Seeker Drop-in** were too low for this group to be viable. Most of the families we were working with had been moved to other parts of Bristol or no longer needed the support of the group and new referrals were not coming through. We have closed the group, but maintain good links with South Gloucestershire Council and the Children’s’ Centre and we are always available to provide support in individual cases as need arises. **Mission Support Group –** During 2021, the Parish continued to support a number of charities at home and abroad. - • - Church Army, Friendship clinic Nepal, - • • Aid Ukraine, Mercy Ships; - • • Euro Evangelism (aka Transform Mission Aviation Fellowship Europe Network) • Embrace the middle east. - • Mission to Seafarers, - Leprosy Mission, We also support a number of local charities at Christmas; Caring at Christmas, East Bristol Foodbank and Sisters of the Church. With our penny collection we support the Maji Safi Bursary fund. As well as our money all of these groups, organisations and people need our prayers. If there are groups that you feel need our support then do please tell us. Finally thank you for your support. The money that you give has a direct impact on people’s lives and spreads our church’s gospel message in a practical way at home and abroad. _Cath Hayer_ **7** **CHILDREN AND FAMILIES** _**Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Deuteronomy 11:9**_ 2021 has seen continued growth in our work with children and young families. **Cafe Tots** at Holy Trinity continues to thrive and grow thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers. As children leave to start pre-school we welcome new parents and carers as they bring their toddlers to join us. **First Time Round** at Church of the Ascension was a vital support to first time mums during lockdown, it was a delight to see them and their babies grow in confidence. As lockdown restrictions eased, it became evident that the Humpty Dumpty Toddler group at Church of Ascension would not restart and so with the mums from First Time Round we launched our new Baby and Toddler Group – **Little Stars** . The family links we make through these groups give valuable support and a listening ear as we share the love of Christ through this ministry; and links into Messy Church and Baptism requests continue to be made. **Messy Church** continued on-line for the first half of 2021 and was great fun but we were excited to be able to have our summer fun on the vicarage lawn in July. You can’t really have a water fight online! From September we have met in the church hall and our numbers have been steadily increasing. We are now averaging 30 children and parents / carers for this service. At Christmas we invited the church to our first Messy Nativity, it was messy! It was noisy! just like a stable in busy Bethlehem, and it was great fun with over 60 people taking part. Rev Chris Evans and Rev Steve Dyson reviewed our policy regarding baptisms this past year with a view to offering baptism within the regular Sunday service; this better offers a true welcome to those being baptised and their families into the church family, the new policy was approved by P.C.C. in September 2021. In the Parish of Kingswood, these now take place on a 4th Sunday at Holy Trinity. The revised service order that Rev Chris has prepared for this enables the regular church family to come together in an inclusive act of worship that is also welcoming for those guests who are not so used to structured church worship. There has been positive feedback from both baptism families and congregation about this new service plan. Baptism preparation is now offered jointly with Hanham baptism families by Rev Steve and Rev Chris on the first Sunday of the month in the afternoons. **8** **WORSHIP AND DISCIPLESHIP** _**What is the chief end of man? A. Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever. [Westminster Catechism]**_ We spent the first half of 2021 offering a physical service at Holy Trinity with some limitations and an on-line Zoom Service that catered to both our Kingswood congregations and to our wider Church family in Hanham parish. The nature of the Covid restrictions necessitated that our season of Lent was a combination of books/’goody bags’ with online groups and prayer days replacing physical ones. Holy week reflections and services were again mainly on-line. This year we were able to provide Easter Communion in person at Ascension and Holy Trinity alongside the Zoom Service which included a special shared Agape. One of the fruits of this season is how the Zoom Services provided the opportunity to worship in a less formal way and getting to know people from across the different congregations and two parishes. So many valued this grace of coming together that, as we returned to worshipping physically in our buildings in June, we initiated a new joint service on the first Sunday of each month called **Together to Worship** (TTW). On that first Sunday in June it was such a joy to greet and worship with those we had grown to know and value over the previous 6 months. We also introduced a regular **Evensong using the Book of Common Prayer** on two Sundays per month and a programme of concerts in the summer months on the fourth Sunday afternoon at Holy Trinity Church. We are blessed to have a choir and musicians of superb quality to support our worship and special services through the holy Trinity Singers and St George Singers. Thank you to Jim Williams, john Cottle and all the singers for your hard work and continued support. In October we shared our **harvest service** and lunch with Hanham parish, 60 people from across all our congregations sharing food together was a new milestone as we gave thanks to God for all he provides. The year ended with **Christmas services** able to happen as normal albeit a further outburst of Covid did unsettle and dampen things a little. **Our Zoom Bible Study** has continued throughout the year, this year we tackled the Old Testament – tracking the overarching story of God’s people and grappling with how best to interpret these ancient texts for today. The **Tuesday Bible Study group** was happily able to resume meeting I from 30th November, commencing with the Advent course focusing on the book of Ruth. We have continued to commit to praying for our Church family and community; at home; opening the church for quiet prayer and reflection and through specific prayer days and we are ever grateful for our committed team of church watchers who make this possible. Colleen Mercer continues to co-ordinate the prayer chain on behalf of the church family of Holy Trinity and Ascension. **9** In May, Rev Chris Evans led a group of from Holy Trinity and Church of the Ascension in a quiet weekend at Ammerdown Retreat House with its peaceful gardens. The theme of the weekend was Birds in the Bible, focusing on what we can learn from birds that helps us in our relationship with God, such as leading and supporting each other as do flocks of geese, and leaving the safety of a nest to travel into the unknown with God, and of course the Holy Dove of God. It is not only a time of fellowship, reflection and journeying but also a time to get to know each other better. Home visiting continued throughout the year when pastorally essential, but from the Summer onwards, we were able to visit more people, more frequently and to resume Home Communion where appropriate, taking care to test before we visited and maintain good Covid controls. The **Pastoral Care Group** continues to make sure those who are housebound feel that they are still very much part of the church family and that any further support needs are brought to the attention of the clergy team. ## **CHURCHWARDEN – GILL GODFREY** _“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight “(_ Proverbs 3:5). This past year has certainly been a challenge for us all and as we have trusted in God’s grace and faithfulness we must give thanks for all the blessings he so generously gives each day. ## **Church of Ascension** We are pleased to report the following things that have been completed since last year. - _Ridge tiles on the roof replaced where necessary_ - _Other coping stones re-pointed_ - _A new consumer box in the vestry fitted after electrical inspection_ - _All electrical items have been PAT tested_ - _Loop system installed_ - _External notice board replaced_ The sanctuary wall is waiting to dry out following the coping stone work. Re-decoration will be arranged possibly for 2023. Ascension Church helped Christ church pre-school out during the spring term due to work needing to be done in Christ Church hall. **10** The congregation at Ascension has stabilised with an average of 20 people every week. We are building a friendly and inclusive community. ## **Holy Trinity** Holy Trinity church has some stone-work waiting to be done. The Car Park continues to cause much concern with unauthorized parking and anti-social behaviour causing upset and problems for Church activities including funerals. New gates for the car park are in the process of being agreed upon and purchased. Thank you to everyone who has worked hard through the year to keep Ascension and Holy Trinity alive and thriving. Onwards and upwards, God is in control, Alleluia . Blessings to you all. ## **FINANCE REPORT – JOHN GODFREY** The maintenance of the Parish Finances is the responsibility of the treasurers of the eight different bank accounts with overall responsibility being with the PCC treasurer, John Godfrey. Heartfelt thanks go to all our treasurers and to the independent examiners of the accounts for all the work they do on our behalf. Our true parish income for 2021 was £77,939 with £79,480 true expenditure. However when taking into account excluded income and expenditure the overall gross deficit is £1,679 for the year. This deficit was due mainly to maintenance work on 36, Elmfield and at Church of the Ascension. Our cash balances at the end of 2021 were £202,138 in total. However, £149,938 of these reserves were deemed restricted funds not available for general use. True income/expenditure excludes all inter-account trading within the parish. Detailed accounts are shown in a separate document and presented to this AGM which have been approved by the PCC. If anyone wishes to have a copy of any of the individual accounts which make up the parish accounts, please see the office staff who will arrange a copy for you. ## **SAFEGUARDING REPORT – MARY WHYATT** I am pleased to report that there have been no significant safeguarding issues in the past year in Holy Trinity or Ascension. The emphasis this year has been on safeguarding training and will continue to be the focus for the next year too. In November 2021, twenty-five church members who have direct contact with children, young people or vulnerable adults, completed a Foundation Safeguarding Course. It was the first face to face training which the Diocese had delivered since lockdown and I wish to thank everyone who attended for their commitment and support. **11** On 1st January 2022 the Church of England brought out a new Safeguarding Learning and Development Framework which has much more stringent and robust guidelines and requirements. DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checks now have to be renewed every 3 years instead of 5. There is a revised two- part Leadership course which must be completed by anyone who holds a leadership role whether paid or voluntary. All members of the PCC are required to complete a Raising Awareness of Domestic Abuse Course. Suggested dates for these courses have been submitted to the Diocese. Anyone who carries responsibility for recruiting volunteers to assist in running our church activities must complete a Safer Recruitment Course. The aims of this are to ensure that everyone who has direct contact with children, young people or vulnerable adults understands their role and is recruited safely through consistent, fair and secure guidelines. Our churches are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all our members and visitors. There is much work to be done in the coming year but compliance with the new Church of England Safeguarding Framework should enhance the good practice we already have and ensure that everyone feels valued, safe and loved. All individual accounts have been independently examined by the relevant Independent Examiners assigned, and duly signed for accuracy. I would like to thank them on behalf of the parish for completing this task. The Vicar and Churchwarden Account balance is shown on the parish balance sheet. The balances for each of these funds is shown in this report and details of individual accounts can be requested from the PCC treasurer. All individual accounts have been prepared in the traditional manner by the respective treasurers and we thank them for their due diligence. Generally only the Parish Level account operated with reasonably healthy balances throughout 2021. The combined accounts true income figure was reduced further below £100,000 in 2021, This has been mainly due to the Covid19 Pandemic. This year Parish Receipts and Payments Accounts have been prepared instead of Accrual accounts. Some receipts do not require to be included in the annual report, namely fees paid to the Diocese, choir and flower fees, collections such as Christian Aid and parish events where the parish is acting only as agent. Therefore, the report additionally shows balances/income/expenditure in gross terms as well as net of these categories. Main change in 2021 was a small decrease (£1680) in overall fund balances due mainly to expenditure on fabric at Church of the Ascension and repairs at 36 Elmfield in the Parish Level accounts. The main financial highlights of the Kingswood Parish for 2021 have been as follows:- ## **Fund highlights** ## **PARISH LEVEL** The overall balance for this fund increased by £5256 in 2021 due mainly to rent received from 36 Elmfield but there were small maintenance costs on the property during the year. The administration balance also reduced due to the additional payment of £2000 to the diocese for parish share. There were no significant highlights in the Mission accounts. The allocation of funds to charities is managed by the Mission Support Group under the direction of the PCC. ## **ALL SOULS, SOUTHEY PARK DCC** All Souls was closed at the end of 2020 and the remaining assets were re-distributed in 2021. This included £1000 being paid to the diocese for parish share. ## **HTKDCC** Overall fund balance for HTKDCC decreased further in 2021 by £1316. The parish share figure raised for 2021 was again shorter than that requested by the diocese. The budget for 2022 shows a parish share figure of £18,000 which is again short from that requested. ## **HTK RESTORATION** A small increase in the balance for this fund (£1305). Expenditure in the year has covered urgent repairs to the church and hall. ## **ASCDCC** The overall fund balance decreased slightly by £4468 in 2021. This was due to repair work on the chancel coping stones, a new electricity distribution board, new noticeboard and loop system. The parish share promise for 2022 is £8820. ## **Going Concern Accounting Policy** The accounts have been prepared on the assumption that the charity is able to continue as a going concern. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the global economy, and has in turn impacted the charity. The trustees have considered the impact of this issue on the charity’s current and future financial position. The charity holds unrestricted, general reserves of £52200, that can be drawn down if necessary and restricted reserves of £149938. The trustees consider that the charity has sufficient cash reserves to continue as a going concern for a period of at least 12 months from the date on which these financial statements are approved.
