|---|---|---|
|Review of the charity’s<br>financial position at the end<br>of the period|Para 1.21|Razed Roof has received a combination of<br>both restricted and unrestricted reserves in<br>the Financial year. Razed Roof has used<br>the restricted reserves to carry out those<br>specified projects.<br>This has left Razed Roof reserves retained<br>which will allow Razed Roof to fund its<br>activity into the next year.|
|Statement explaining the<br>policy for holding reserves<br>stating why they are held|Para 1.22|Razed Roof holds restricted reserves.<br>Razed Roof obtains funding for specific<br>projects. Funding obtained for these<br>projects will be restricted to be spent solely<br>on those actives which ensure Razed Roof<br>achieve the objectives of the Project. These consist of donations<br>which do not have any restrictions placed<br>upon them and thus Razed Roof has the<br>option to use these resources on activities<br>which meet Razed Roof’s wider objectives<br>and management but do not necessarily<br>meet the specific restrictions that may be<br>place upon restricted funding.|

## Charity no: **1128337**

## **Razed Roof Artistic Director’s Annual Report: 2024-2025**

## **General**

2024-2025 has been **fabulous year** with so much happening.

We have been delivering several new initiatives, in-line with the changing needs of our ‘communityfocus’ and in response to our risk assessments.

We recognise that our community are amongst some of the harder-hit in society with a few of our participants still experiencing some the negative after-effects of the pandemic. When a participant expresses “You have saved me,” it is important to recognise the life-affirming importance of our work.

However, over the year we have collaborated flexibly in new partnerships and with new creatives, in the safest and most supportive ways we can.

As one of their Resident Groups, we are very grateful to **the Harlow Playhouse** for the ongoing welcome and support we receive.

We have continued, and developed, our links with **schools and universities** .

There have been numerous initiatives involving many people, including our

**invaluable volunteers** (about 50+ people volunteering in one way or another).

We could not operate without all the tremendous support we get from the

community.

As of November 2025

**We have engaged people/audiences in excess of 3,000 people; even more will have viewed** our work digitally: Facebook (9.6K interactions), Twitter, website, DVDs, and YouTube links.

## **Donations:**

Thankfully we have received several generous donations:

from private individuals;

from friends and supporters of Razed Roof:

from community organisations;

from local businesses;

from local music + arts groups.

**And** especially from successful activities organised by our Fundraising Committee;

Many, many thanks to all who help fund and support us.

## **Regular Workshops**

**Razed Roof Company** : we have our weekly, all-day, sessions on Thursdays based at Harlow Playhouse

**Gently Creates:** these all-day sessions **,** funded by the People’s Health Lottery, are based at Harlow Playhouse. We have made contact with those who are ‘harder-to-reach’; we have a mix of different people, with a wide range of different needs, who enjoy the gentle activity, the company and the fun. This group has a greater focus on Health and Well-Being with fruit being offered as a snack.

Since September, Gently Creates has continued with new funding from the HHCT.

## **Other Workshops**

**Maybury Open Door** : We have done three workshop days @ Harefield Church Hall. All have been very popular and they are eager to maintain this collaboration and have invited us to some celebration events.

**‘The Common Sun’** We ran this workshop in partnership with the Gibberd Gallery: artist Tom McDonagh who introduced us to his work. Gently Creates participants then developed a movement piece which we performed in the ‘tented space’ in front of the sculpture: ‘The Chorus’.

**Poetry + Creative Moves** workshop in a residential home

**Green Party Xmas Fayre:** we gave a performance and ran a community workshop.

**Inclusion Project** Easter Workshop day for children with SEND via W.Essex Inclusion Project

**Puppetry Days** : 3x all-day ‘Making and Puppetry’ workshops were hosted at Parndon Mill for preschool, junior, adult + SEND audiences.

## Puppeteers: **Sue Dacre, Ronnie Le Drew and Keith Frederick**

Also, an evening talk from Ronnie le Drew re. his life with Zippy (iconic character from Rainbow on TV)

Central School of Speech & drama students joined us and later introduced scarf puppets into their assignmentwork.

**Learning Disability Festival** in Harlow Town Park 2025 organised by ECC: Razed Roof ran a workshop, then give a sharing performance during the afternoon. Hugely successful with 1,000+ members of the public at the event.

**Essex University ‘Inclusive Practice’** Razed Roof delivered our annual workshop for year3 students on the Community Drama course. It was excellent, despite Lancaster Special School students being unable to participate at the last-minute.

## **Performances.**

## **Holocaust Memorial Day**

Razed Roof performed two movement pieces at the Civic Centre in Jan’25: ‘Chimes of Freedom’ and ‘Here Comes the Sun’ with live music from Kris Ambrose. There was also a series of sculpts for ‘The Ten Stages of Genocide’.

**Jack Petchey Evening:** RR + Central performed ‘Hogweed’ an excerpt from their show on the Playhouse stage for this packed presentation evening.

**Potters Street Fete** : Razed Roof kicked-off the fete performing in the central arena on the Green, then invited members of public to come and join in with us.

## **Harlow Pride**

The third time we’ve contributed to this vibrant event with dances and a signed-song performance from RRoofers joined by some Gently Creates participants. Members of the community joined in for a mini-workshop outside in the garden area.

## **Razed Roof’s Annual Show: ‘Unfolding: a Magical Garden’**

Performed on Harlow Playhouse main stage, there were matinee and evening performances of ‘Unfolding: a Magical Garden’.

Our show was a celebration of the Gibberd Garden and its sculptures.

Many RRoofers have been immersed in the subject and did so much **research** .

We visited and established a link with Matt the Head Gardener and some of the Gibberd Garden volunteers.

All of Razed Roof contributed to this **company-devised production** : there were script-writing sessions; making sessions; one-to-one script-rehearsals; and props/costume sorting sessions.

Our show featured adapted music sung live by Jess Ansell

Ned designed the show poster + programmes; Harlow College collated + printed for us.

Mandy took the lead on collecting our research and findings, and involved a team of RRoofers in developing and preparing an **exhibition** for the day of the show.

A RR team worked hard on the show **all-day, get-in** at the Playhouse main stage. We are especially **grateful to the Playhouse Technical Team** who were so positive and helpful; to John Mann who assisted us with the use of a stage projector from the West-End; to Connie + Josh + Jess who were guest performers; and the six Central students who enthusiastically joined us to give support in various ways.

Karen Cook kindly came a took **still photos** during the Dress; we hired Cheema to **film the matinee show** .

At the end of the show, we presented RR awards

*Woodroffe Benton Award: Josh Mann _(Newly named ‘WBA’ after funder)_

*Mike Adamou+ Jan Pearson Award: Emma Warner

*Keith Watson Award: Simon Mok

*Peter Lines Award: Robert Hoile

## **Gibberd Garden Open-Air performance** .

‘Unfolding : a Magical Garden’ was rewritten to perform out-doors in the Gibberd Garden. The adapted performance was a challenge, but Razed Roof were amazing and so professional in coping with minimal rehearsal time. The staff team were full of admiration for our performers; and the audiences enthused about the added impact of the show through the open-air setting. A massive ‘thank you‘ to Clairey Klyn who was a technical wonder in ensuring the show went on; and to the six super students from Central School of Speech + Drama..

**Audience Show Feedback:** The company got a standing ovation in the evening performance and some audience comments for ‘Unfolding: a Magical Garden’’:

_Razed Roof exemplify what inclusivity really means in a theatre group – it was very thoughtful, imaginative, good humoured and inspirational. Thank you Razed Roof._

_You are all superb! We both enjoyed this evening's performance right through to the joyous finale. The props, acting , music, lighting, singing, dancing and direction were all excellent, as always._

_We loved the spider and muntjacks and the depiction of the Coutts Bank columns and urns, and sang along to some of our favourite songs. The background of Gibberd Garden photographs and scenes was so beautiful, particularly the stars._

_Thank you to everyone involved in putting on such magical theatre for us all. Judy + Howard_

_That was absolutely phenomenal! We enjoyed it from the very start to the end! We didn’t want it to end !!!!_

_Absolutely Brilliant! Scenes were breathtaking, what a lovely way to depict Harlow and the Garden, always walk away with a smile, Razed Roofers, you are all 'Simply The Best'! Jacqueline Hall_

## **Residential Trip with Performances + Workshops**

Flatford Mill Residential took place over four days at the National Trust site in Suffolk. We stayed at the Field Studies Centre in a nearly 600 year-old farm house. We ran various workshop sessions: music, dance, drama; and we did some ‘pop-up’ performances in the garden and on the lane with Ned playing guitar for the singers.

We welcomed two visual artists who joined us to run drawing and painting activities for both us and for the general public. We were also joined by a fabulous classical + flamenco guitarist.

The staff team and volunteers worked so hard: they dealt with last-minute hiccups and various health issues; and ensured that everyone had a quality, inspiring and creative experience.

It was a massive success, engaging several hundred people who either joined-in our activities or who were audiences to our creative work. Both the FSC and the National Trust manager have since contacted us, appreciating our visit.

We thrived in this rural setting: benefitting from the visit to the RSPB site; and from the artistic focus on the heritage of the famous artist, John Constable.

**Partnerships**

**Central School of Speech + Drama:** AL worked with programme Leader and tutors to devise an eightweek project for 6 students from Central (“Gatecrashers”) for Summer Term ’25.

‘Coll Out’ involved them shadowing RR as we rehearsed our show; then afterwards, working with RR to develop and write a script with them.

*Central students all were eager to **perform in ‘Unfolding: a Magical Garden’** with us: they were fantastic!

*Afterwards, they worked with RR to extend the ideas and add to the script for an open-air **performance at the Gibberd Garden** , including several visits to the Gibberd Garden for inspiration and for planning with Health + Safety checks. Their lecturers from CSSD came to watch their adaptation ‘Unfolding: the Quest’; and apparently all students got good to outstanding grades for their assignment.

*All students said they loved their placement with us and had learnt so much from the experience.

*We have received a super gift of appreciation from the students: a set of three Trestle masks.

**W.Essex Inclusion Project** : the RR team are delivering an afterschool provision for children with SEND. A 10 week Autumn term project: **‘Larks with Arts’** is running after school in the Town Park Learning Centre.

**Princess Alexandra Hospital + Razed Roof + Harlow Council** have embarked on a new project **‘Health Aware’** . We are liaising with the PAH Patient Panel, the Director of Community Engagement, the Francis Crick Institute, and a range of local Health and community organisations. Our work and research will lead to a conference event, then inform our new production for 2026.

Endeavour to provide professional development: ACE /career development placement;University projects and delivery; University placements.

Maintain the links with Special Schools and SEND young people in the community ( ECC + Buddy-Up scheme)

Build on connections with the Harlow community and organisations, including

Harlow Museum; Gibberd Garden; Phoenix Live; Parndon Mill; Maybury Open Door; various Health providers.

Use creative means to support people who have experienced

difficulties; and grab appropriate opportunities to develop and promote our

important work.

******** Many thanks to all the different people who’ve contributed and enabled all this activity: our Trustees have been wonderfully supportive throughout this challenging year; and our staff team have been nothing but fabulous.

Personally, I am proud to be part of this wonderful thing we have!

Finally…best wishes our lovely Liv who is expecting a baby in December. And congratulations to our trustee Chris Vince and his wife on the birth of their son. We are expecting the names of both littleones to be put down to join Razed Roof!

## **Independent examiner's report on the accounts**

## **Section A Independent Examiner’s Report**

**Report to the trustees** Charity Name Razed Roof **On accounts for the year** 2025 **Charity no** 1128337 **ended (if any) Set out on pages** (remember to include the page numbers of additional sheets) I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended **05 / 04 / 2025** . **Responsibilities and** As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the **basis of report** accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

**Independent** I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have **examiner's statement** come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:

- the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or

- the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or

- the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
