**Razed Roof Artistic Director’s Annual Report: 2023-2024**
## **General**
It has been another fabulous year with so much happening. After the challenging years impacted by the pandemic, we are accustomed to some new routines and procedures which recognise that our community are amongst some of the harder-hit in society. This year, the last few of our participants felt able to attend again.
We have been delivering several new initiatives, in-line with the changing needs of our ‘community-focus’ and in response to our risk assessments.
Over the year we have collaborated in new partnerships and with new creatives, in the safest and most supportive ways we can.
We are very grateful for the ongoing welcome and support we receive from **the Harlow Playhouse** as one of their Resident Groups.
We have continued, and developed, our links with **schools and universities** .
There have been numerous initiatives involving many people, including our
- **invaluable volunteers** (about 45+ people volunteering in one way or another).
We could not operate without all the tremendous support we get from our
community.
As of October 2024
**We have engaged people/audiences in excess of 3,000 people; even more will have viewed** our work digitally: Facebook (6K Reach), Twitter, website, DVDs, and YouTube links.

## **Visitors**
**Razed Roof Trustees** have been involved in our sessions and
activities throughout the year, including the Trustees’ visit for an Annual Review and Feedback Session with Razed Roof participants.
**Playhouse Manager, Rory,** has dropped in on several occasions to encourage and support RR, sometimes bringing visitors to highlight how the Playhouse supports diverse, inclusive groups.
**Judith Johnson** our playwright and patron has visited, also in her Royal Central School of Speech and Drama role re. student placements.
- **Greg Baxter:** actor/RADA has worked with us for his MA Research + Placement at Central School of Speech & Drama
**Musician Matt Payne** visited as we incorporated his composition into our show.
**Catherine Willmore** from Arts Council England came to see RR performance
**Our 10K Runners:** Bryan Young + Ben visited for publicity photoshoots.
**JPF Ambassador** : Joe came to interview Aaron.
**Two potential new trustees:** visited and then underwent an interview with all members of Razed Roof involved. An important process.
## **Workshops**
**Razed Roof Company** : we have our weekly, all-day, sessions on Thursdays based at Harlow Playhouse
**Gently Creates:** these all-day sessions **,** funded by the People’s Health Lottery, are based at Harlow Playhouse. We have made contact with those who are ‘harder-to-reach’; we have a mix of different people, with a wide range of different needs, who enjoy
the gentle activity, the company and the fun. This group has a greater focus on Health and Well-Being
## **Harris Academy Conference**
AL delivered a day-long workshop to 35 Drama teachers at Excel Centre London. Accompanied by RRoofers, Aidan, Christina + Tom supported by JaneB., we introduced and involved participants in our inclusive approach to Performance Arts. We received a very complimentary email from the Harris Lead Manager.
**‘Inclusive Practice’** Razed Roof delivered our annual workshop **for** course. **Essex University** year3 students on the Community Drama For this initiative, we involved Lancaster Special School students: the Environment and Climate theme was a success.
**Puppetry + Props Days** : All-day, Making and Puppetry workshops with Billie at Parndon Mill, including: a fabulous turtle, glo-fungi, pollution-items, and a forest structure. Jane Martin worked to create several stunning mushroom head-dress.
All these items were spectacular and really added to the quality of our show.
**Gravelly Barn:** A group of RR spent a day of painting at Gravelly Barn, tutored by artists Jane Davalle and Glynnis Bainbridge. Everyone produced a canvas on the theme of ‘Environment’, to go into their 12” canvas ‘Art Matters’ exhibition.
**Gravelly Barn ‘Treasure’ performance** : a small team of performers went along to perform some excerpts from our show, adapted especially for the exhibition day with some audience participation.
**Community Connects Day** organised by a Hertfordshire organisation. AD and a few of RR ran a community workshop session. Aaron received the ‘Best Contribution’ award.
**Learning Disability Festival** in Harlow Town Park organised by ECC: RR were invited to run a workshop and give a sharing performance
during the afternoon. Hugely successful with 1,000+ members of the public at the event.
**Maybury Open Door** : We ran another workshop day @ Harefield Church Hall It was very popular and they are eager to maintain this collaboration.
RR has been invited to some of their special events, including their Opening Party; and then their One Year anniversary with an Elvis Tribute act.
**‘Reading Sessions’ initiative** : we are grateful to have been able to use their venue for these sessions.
**Aerial Workshop with Generation Circus** . A group of ten enjoyed the experience of warming-up then being assisted to use ropes, swing, and silks for an ‘aerial experience’.
## **Performances.**
## **Holocaust Memorial Day**
Razed Roof was invited by Rabbi Irit to contribute; we were able to perform two pieces at the Civic Centre in Jan’24: ‘Yesterday’ live music + movement piece about intolerance; and ‘Imagine’ read as a poem before live music with movement. Live music was provided by Kris Ambrose and it was filmed by Chris Cowdrey.
**Harlow Celebrates** : Razed Roof were selected to perform in the Chair of Harlow Council’s community show. Members of our new group, Gently Creates, were excited to be involved.
**Razed Roof Show: ‘Treasure’**
_Our work this year has been focused on devising and developing our show about the ._ _**environment and climate change: ‘Treasure’** Many RRoofers have been immersed in the subject and did so much_ _**research** ._
_AD successfully applied to screen the Complicite film_ _**Can I Live?’** about climate change. We wanted to engage the wider community in discussion as we developed material for our new production._
_We established a link with Matt from the Depart. of Environment Food & Rural Affairs:_ _**DEFRA** who supported our work and planned production._
_All of Razed Roof contributed to this_ _**company-devised production** : there were script-writing sessions; making sessions; one-to-one script-rehearsals; and props/costume sorting sessions._
Our show featured **music composed** for RR by musician Matt Rodrigez-Payne; and music + song written for the show and sung live by Ned Lidster-Browne. Ned also designed the show poster + programmes; Roger at Parndon Mill collated + printed for us. Mandy took the lead on collecting our research and findings, and involved a team of RRoofers in developing and preparing an **exhibition** for the day of the show.
A RR team worked hard on the ‘Treasure’ **all-day, get-in** at the Playhouse main stage. We are especially **grateful to the Playhouse Technical Team** who were so positive and helpful; and to John Mann who assisted us with the use of a stage projector from the WestEnd.
Chris Cowdrey kindly came a took **still photos** during the Dress; we hired Cheema to **film the matinee show** .

## . **Gibberd Garden Open-Air performance**
‘Treasure’ was rewritten to perform out-doors in the Gibberd
Garden. We had to adapt the performance in many ways, including use of understudies, but Razed Roof were amazing and so
professional in coping with last-minute changes. The staff team were full of admiration for our performers; and the audiences enthused about the added impact of the show through the open-air setting.
**Audience Show Feedback:** The company got a standing ovation in the evening performance and some audience comments for ‘Treasure’:
_I loved this show, fantastic. There’s something about the way you manage this mixed ability group that has so much simplicity and yet raw power. You distilled the issues into what are hilarious and almost ludicrously simple_
_frameworks which then triggers so many emotions. I felt desperate at the state of the world! Let’s hope many others did too and you will spur the audience into action. Thanks to you for all that you do. (Andy Thornton)_

**Jack Petchey Evening:** RR + Central performed an excerpt from their show on the Playhouse stage for this packed presentation evening.
## **Harlow Pride**
The second time we’ve contributed to this event in the Harvey Centre: a fabulous event, with two dances and one signed-song
performances from RRoofers: joined by some Gently Creates . participants
## **Residential Trip**
Flatford Mill Residential took place over four days at the National Trust site in Suffolk. We stayed at the Field Studies Centre in a nearly 600 year-old farm house. We ran various workshop sessions: music, dance, drama; and we did various ‘pop-up’ performances at different locations across the site. We welcomed three visual artists who joined us to run drawing and painting activities for both us and for the general public.
It was a massive success, engaging several hundred people who either joined-in our activities or who were audiences to our creative work. Both the FSC and the National Trust manager have since contacted us, keen for us to return.
We thrived in this rural setting: benefitting from the river boat trips; the visit to the RSPB site; and from the artistic focus on the heritage of the famous artist, John Constable.
## **Partnerships**
**Central School of Speech + Drama:** AL worked with programme Leader and tutors to devise a seven week project for 5 students from Central (“Gatecrashers”) for Summer Term ’24.
- ‘Coll Out’ involved them shadowing RR as we rehearsed our show; then afterwards, working with RR to develop and write a script with them.
- *Central students all were eager to **perform in ‘Treasure’** with us: fantastic!
- *Afterwards, they worked with RR to extend the ideas and created a piece to **film on location at the Gibberd Garden** .
- *They then organised a fabulous **Red Carpet Premier** Screening event: everyone looked glamorous in their suits and ball-gowns.
- **Placements** : We had Charles on their final 6 week writing placement from Central in the Autumn term.
- We had Greg Baxter on an eight week placement for his MA at Central.
*He performed with RR, then worked with us to **adapt ‘Treasure’ for an open-air performance** with narrator.
## **Trips & Events** _(often linked to a meal out too! )_
**CanalAbility trip:** we won a raffle for a Xmas trip for ten on the River Stort.
We prioritized some of our less independent participants with some from Gently Creating
**Roydon Café:** this was a Fundraiser café with an opportunity to promote our RR show.

Flatford Mill Visit **:** staff took a couple of RRoofers to visit and to meet with FSC staff to discuss and plan a residential
## **Project for a Special School:**
RR created, visual scenarios for older pupils to discuss in their lessons. RR groups planned, rehearsed, sought permissions, then photographed their 5-shot ‘comic strip’ scenarios. This work was welcomed by the school as an important, age-appropriate resource for their curriculum.

## **Film Screenings**
RR has organised film evenings for the group and some invited individuals: Trustees, supporters, associates.
## ‘ **The Lorax’**
‘ **Can I Live?** ’: a community screening of the Complicite film, with 60+ people joining us in follow-on discussion. (Complicite delighted with this)
## ‘ **RR Holocaust Performance’**
‘ **The Colour Purple’**
**‘Treasure’** : screening of the Razed Roof show so we could see ourselves in action.
## **Music Evenings at Phoenix Live**
We have run 5 successful Music evenings at Phoenix Live in the Harvey Centre. These are for Razed Roofers and invited guests; an opportunity for safe, creative, social evenings for RR’s friends and associates, together with live musicians.
We have our special, ‘House Musicians’: Ned, Robin, Cara and Jodie who regularly perform…. with RRoofers joining in. More fabulous musicians have been eager to perform for us: Paul & Jo, Adam & Dominico; Cheema; Punk Floyd; Andy & Kim, Jim & Josh; Kris; Ben. The evenings are a huge success as we link-up with the ‘Buddy Up’ project + other Essex SEND practitioners.
We are also **grateful for the support** we get from Phoenix Live: thanks to Andrew + Rob + Terry
## **Fundraising Committee**
Barabara is the excellent Chair of this committee together with Gill + Annette. Events are supported by many volunteers but, importantly, most of the events include and involve our RRoofers themselves.
## We have had 5 **runners raising funds in the London 10K** in
September.
This was complimented by a sponsored **RR Water Gardens Stroll** in the town centre. RRoofers and our supporters turned out at this event and our local community gave generous donations.
As we raise funds at **RR quizzes in St John’s ARC,** our Razed Roof members are also working on the event so the 100+ attendees can meet and see our participants in action too. Gill oversees 100+ delicious Ploughman’s Platters; Barbara organizes all the workers, teams, tables, monies, raffle prizes and the Quizzer. It runs with military precision.
Barabara organised **Carol Singing** in the Harvey Centre with the conductor Harvey and his team from the Forest Musical Theatre Group leading the music, whilst our RRoofers and carers dressed-up, danced, and held collecting buckets
## **General Business & Community**

Facebook: We are growing our followers: now 1.1K The reach is around 6K
**Storage** : The Harvey Centre continues in assisting us store our props and costume in a new Unit in the Harvey Centre.
**Sound Equipment:** Harlow’s Cllr Souter nominated RR for ECC support to purchase portable sound equipment
**RR Sculpture:** the ‘Razed Roof – Dancing’ sculpture by Jane Martin is now exhibited in its permanent home at the Playhouse (secondfloor) and it has been agreed it will be listed by the Harlow Art Trust.
**Essex Cultural Diversity Project:** continue to keep Razed Roof informed about various initiatives + funding streams; and have involved us in training and networking opportunities.
**Rainbow Services:** RR is a member and benefits from links with other voluntary services organizations; the sharing of information; and networking.
**Active Essex** : AD has attended important planning meetings, raising awareness of those with SEND, where a town-wide strategy has been under discussion.
**Harlow Creates:** AD attends these meetings where various artists/creatives share information on events, opportunities and potential collaborative funding applications. One of those is a Sports England initiative
## **Creative Minds**
This is an important national initiative: performers with SEND discussed how we approach the challenges of our work. Gareth leads the project.
**Harlow Occupational Health Service** : provided an excellent First Aid Emergencies session
**Parndon Mill** has been very encouraging and eager to support RR. We have used their Project Space for several activities; and Roger assists with printing of special documents etc. Razed Roof has been pleased to be invited to be involved in their community activities.
## **Jack Petchey Foundation**
Each year we have to report back to be approved to run this scheme. It’s fabulous to be able to recognise our Achievers
## _**Student Achievers**_ :
Autumn Term ’23: Charles Wall-Wood; Spring’24: Charlie Wilson; Summer’24: Ella Cook
_**The Leader’s Award:**_ was awarded to Ned Lidster-Browne who always looks out for everyone; and shares his creative talents (Artwork; musical performance; and song writing) to enhance our work.
Awards were presented at our RR show and again for a special Jack Petchey evening
_**JPF 25 Years:**_ there was a celebration at City Hall in London. As the longest standing co-ordinator of the scheme, AD (Annette) was
asked to speak at the occasion; Clairey Klyn, Tom Haley & Charlie Wilson accompanied her at this prestigious event.
Sadly Sir Jack Petchey died this Summer. Annette and two of Razed Roof members (Tom + Aaron) have been interviewed for a film to honour and celebrate his life and work.
**Harlow Council** presented Razed Roof with a second ‘Gems of Harlow’ award (first was for charity work; this is for Arts activity) at an eveningin the Council Chamber.
**Harlow Civic Service** : AL represented RR at this Community event with Lord Lieutenant of Essex & several Mayors from the region

- **ECDP Artists’ Salon- Funding** : AD attended a session with a focus on funding applications
- **Digital Skills Event:** AD + 2 of the team attended session on I.T. + Social Media
- **Awards for All** : AD had a ‘Surgery’ appointment re. application process.
**Filming for Training Video** : Aaron and Jamie worked with actress and trainer: Amanda Bailey who has developed a Training Video for Herts Uni Social Workers).
## **Governance**
**Trustees Meetings** : the Trustees together with the Artistic Director and the RR rep. have met, (some in-person and some via Zoom) five times this year.
**Policies** : Throughout the year Trustees and AD have met to review and up-date policies before going to a Trustee Meeting for approval. **Business Plan** : The Chair + Secretary+ AD meet to review and progress the Business Plan: a significant piece of work
Finance: Our Treasurer has had meetings with Chair + AD to review the income and expenditure, to maintain an overview of the finances.
## **Staffing and Support**
Once again, there has been a splendid team of RR staff and volunteers contributing in so many ways to our work throughout the year:
Our inspired and creative weekly team are: Mandy; JaneBand, Ned, Olivia, Annette; plus Gaye Pooley (Simon’s PA).
- Our super, regular, session volunteers are Jayne Page & Barbara Lazarus; also there’s Josh Mann; Chris Vince; Greg Baxter; Chris Cowdrey & Clairey Klyn who join us when they can.
We especially thank Glynnis who has shared her Art & design skills at various events.
- We recognise the amazing support that we have had from all the Harlow Playhouse staff; the weekly welcome from the Box Office+ Bar Team and especially the Manager Rory Davies who moves heaven and earth to make good things happen for us.

## **Looking Ahead:**
Razed Roof’s next show is booked for Thursday 15th May 2025 AL will apply to ACE for funding. We are liaising with the Gibberd Garden for this to be the focus of our show ‘Unfolding: a Magic Garden’.
We have been invited to perform for the Holocaust multi-faith commemoration in January 2025
We have made a booking for a residential at Flatford Mill for Sept. ‘25.
- We will continue to maintain links with our creative friends: Judith Johnson, Suzy Graham-Adriani; our puppetry professionals; a host of different musicians; various makers and Artists. As we experience different performance venues/theatres, we hopefully widening that network.
- We will endeavour to provide professional development: ACE /career development placement. University projects and delivery; University placements.
Maintain the links with Special Schools and SEND young people in the community ( ECC + Buddy-Up scheme)
Develop more Making Workshops with Parndon Mill .
Build on connections with the Harlow community and organisations, including
Harlow Museum; Gibberd Garden; Phoenix Live; Parndon Mill; Maybury Open Door.
We will use creative means to support people who have experienced difficulties; and grab appropriate opportunities to develop and promote our
important work.

**Report to the trustees** Charity Name Razed Roof **On accounts for the year** 2024 **Charity no** 1128337 **ended (if any) Set out on pages** (remember to include the page numbers of additional sheets) I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended **05 / 04 / 2024** . **Responsibilities and** As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the **basis of report** accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
**Independent** I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have **examiner's statement** come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:
