St Andrew’s Methodist Church Trustees Annual Report September 2021-2022
Overview of the year
This has been another year of uncertainty as Covid has continued to affect the mission and ministry of St Andrew’s Methodist Church, and additional uncertainties such as the war in Ukraine and the cost-of-living crisis emerged. Communications and meetings have continued online, whilst still seeking to provide for those with less access to technology. Throughout these demanding times the gospel of God’s love for all continued to be preached, as evidenced by church activities throughout the year.
Worship
Café church now meets on zoom only, with new members welcome to join. The monthly Prayer Fellowship also transferred to zoom and has remained there, and the weekly Prayer Time on zoom is well-supported. It seems appropriate to commit to offering online facilities for the foreseeable future. The church has made a modest investment of funds to improve internet access.
Music in worship continues to be led by the one remaining organist, with the regular contribution of the music group, alongside the creative use of digital recordings and videos as necessary. The Flower committee have resumed their much-appreciated ministry.
Significantly, the Church Council voted by a majority to support The Methodist Conference’s 2020 decision to allow same sex marriages to be held if local Trustees agree. The application to the Registrar General has been made.
Learning and Caring
The two parallel Lent Groups, one on zoom and one at the church were well- supported and appreciated.
Pastoral Visitors have developed different ways to keep connection with members and adherents. However, several people have moved away from the area and the church during the year, and their presence is much missed. St Andrew’s is not alone in experiencing this shift of personnel, as the deprivations of lockdown caused many people to re-evaluate living far away from family. For the same reason, some have moved into to the area, and joined the congregation.
Several special wedding anniversaries - diamond, golden, ruby and silver, were celebrated, together with ordinations and a local preacher’s recognition service. Three baptisms and four funerals have also taken place.
Despite Covid restrictions opportunities for fellowship included a garden party, several summer walks, and meals out.
Service and Evangelism
The Catering Team have been able to provide hospitality to the general public biweekly on Saturdays and visitors are returning, although somewhat slower than anticipated. Welcome Wednesdays drop-in has also resumed with a part time employed co-ordinator and a team of volunteers – and still seems to meet a need.
St Andrew’s re-launched as an Eco-Church. This is alongside the Circuit Eco-Group and the Worcester Green Churches Group bringing many denominations together in the city.
A book launch to promote awareness of the Palestinian situation was hosted, and a vigil for Palestine held outside the Church. A vigil for Ukraine was also held outside the church at the beginning of the war, which was widely supported by the city and other circuit members.
St Andrew’s continues to host Worcestershire Welcomes Refugees, an umbrella group of the local Welcomes Groups for Syrian and Afghan refugees.
Members also participated in a Walk of Witness through the city centre during COP26, leading prayers from the balcony.
This year the church also offered extensive support to the Worcester Passion Play and hosted District Synod.
Unfortunately, St Andrew’s Singers decided to close.
Property & Finance
Throughout lockdown and beyond, much was done to maintain and improve the property. However, current administration of finance and property is undertaken by a very small number of people, and there is work for the Resources Committee to review the way the church’s maintenance might be monitored and managed.
