Laura Priestman’s six year term as warden was recognised by the meeting and a presentation was made. Vestry meeting was closed. ## **Minutes of Annual Parochial Church Meeting 2022** _Present: A total of 31 attendees._ 1. Following her election as Mothers Union Diocesan President giving her ex-officio right of attendance at Synod, Maxine will be replaced as a Deanery Rep for Holy Trinity by Grace Man whose candidature was proposed by Jon and Maxine Paul and accepted unanimously. 9. Election of PCC laity. - As there were only eight nominations out of a maximum of 12 permitted no vote was necessary and the following were accepted on to the PCC: Peter Amirthalingam; Christine Edwards; David Horton; Kaye Larbi; Harry Moth; Hyacinth Osborne; Terry Palmer; Lorraine Roman. - Two serving members (Nigel Colvert and Grace Man) retired from the council. 10. Appointment of Independent Examiner. Mr Richard Freeman was proposed by Laura Priestman and, with no dissent, is to continue in the role. ## **AOB.** Mo. Rosemary advised that, after meeting with the Archdeacon, she will remain at Holy Trinity as Associate Priest until September 2023 and thereafter will apply for a Permission to Officiate Bishop’s Licence allowing her to officiate within the diocese. Fr. Andrew’s will continue as Assistant Curate after the arrival of the new Vicar. No items for consideration received. ## **Closing Prayers.** _[Meeting ended at 12:23 pm.]_ *** ## **- REPORTS for 2022 23** ## **3) REVISION OF ELECTORAL ROLL** Report will be given verbally. ## **4) VICAR’S REPORT** I became the new Vicar of Holy Trinity, Barkingside on 5 September 2022. Fr Andrew and his staff team had worked hard during the Interregnum to keep public worship and private prayers going, including live-streaming the Sunday 10:30am service. At my arrival I felt a warm welcome and learned to appreciate a servant-hearted attitude across the church. The Plan and Vision: Following God, Journeying Together, and Living Out Christ the Life-Giver I didn’t come with a plan (and still haven’t got one), but want us to be led by God, and journey forward together. My focus has been on discerning and responding to these key questions: 1) What is God doing – where are signs of his “life” – and how can we join in? 2) What is not healthy and needs pruning? 3) What challenges do people face and how can we help? 4) What immediate 4 ## things need doing without changing the core? I asked all of us to open our eyes, ears and senses, and pay good attention to what God is saying and doing. Like Moses and so many others after him, we want to be summoned by God and follow him on a journey of renewal and refreshment – and as we journey in full awareness of the particular challenges we are facing in our specific context in Barkingside, the big question for us is: What is our response? In all this, our specific background and tradition is important – this is why I have been asking members of our church family the following: What brings you joy and life and feeds you? Where and when do you encounter God? What makes you anxious? What pain and hurt do you carry? What are your dreams and vision going forward? Where would you like to serve? Who would you like to empower? And who is on your heart to share about Jesus Christ? Wherever our journey leads, it is on my heart that 1) we are in intimate relationship with God and love worshipping him; 2) we are a Family full of love and support for one another – empowering one another in our specific gifting, and seeking to imitate Christ’s humility and compassion in everything we do; 3) we are working for the Common Good and practice radical hospitality to those around us. The Action: What has happened since September? To start, I focused much of my energy on watching and learning, observing and discerning, and most importantly, getting to know members of our church, and more slowly, our wider neighbourhood. Since September, amazing things have happened, and I have felt a strong blessing over our journey. Particular highlights were two social events bringing us together as a Church Family: The 2022 Christmas Party with such wonderful joy and dancing; and the Coronation Party where we joined with Lichen Court, in the Garden of the Vicarage. We are blessed by two significant mission activities: First, the wonderful Tuesday Drop-In (Tricia & Maxine and a wonderful team) – our thriving model of Christ’s Kingdom in our neighbourhood, where people come and enjoy friendship, games, crafts and knitting, eating and praying, and there is even a toddler’s play area. Second, our Family & Children ministry that is gaining momentum – leading to amazing Family Church events (led by Christine & Kate and an amazing team), Church visits by Schools during Christmas and Easter; and growing relationship with Mossford Green Primary School (School Assemblies and more) and the Christian Education Project. More generally, lots of things have been going on, including: 1. Tea & Cake at the Vicarage on Sunday afternoons: My wife Kate and I have been inviting members of the Congregation simply to get to know one another and have some fun (sorry for those who haven’t visited us yet, but the invite will come eventually). 2. I am using my sermons to share things that God is putting on my heart for us – which I then also share in my Vicar’s Letter in Trinity Times. 3. Many got involved knitting scarves for the Ukraine and packing Xmas shoeboxes; we also brought in countless bags full of foodstuff and Xmas crackers as part of our Reverse Advent Calendar collection which we brought to our Foodbank. We also have a special Foodbank collection lead by Mark Gentry. 5 4. Signing up to provide a “Warm Welcome” for those struggling to heat their homes this winter was an important step into showing heart and declaring: “You are welcome here – we are with you – we want to help.” 5. Journeying alongside Mike Priestman who is exploring a calling into ordained ministry – a blessing for our church. 6. The Revival of the “Manna House” ministry in our church (Jackie, Terry and Erica). 7. Introducing more user-friendly Power Point slides, the “People’s Altar”, and more consistent seasonal liturgy to the 10:30am Sunday service; 8. Improving our communication and public image: Revitalizing Pew Sheets, Facebook, Website, Family News, and Notice Boards. 9. Saying goodbye to our beloved Fr Andrew and his family, and then celebrating Fr Andrew’s licensing as Priest-in-charge of the Blackwater parishes of Maldon, St Mary. 10. Slowly revitalizing Eco Church. 11. Celebrating the baptisms of Benjamin, Kiran and Harrison. 12. Being more intentional how we help and care for the most vulnerable (Laura, David, & Hyacinth). 13. Hosting a number of events at HT, including Fairlop Water Brass Band, the Deanery Synod, the mid-week Lent lunch for NIFOC (plus other involvement with NIFOC, incl. Songs of Praise and Easter Friday Public Gathering), and a Chapter Meeting with Bishop Lynne. 14. Journeying through Advent and Christmas, and a particularly profound Holy Week and Easter. 15. Journeying with two groups (Tuesday lunchtime and Wednesday evening) through the fiveweek Lent Course “A Place for Us” based on West Side Story. 16. Developing my skills as Vicar by i) attending a three day “Incumbents Skills Course”; ii) joining a year-long “Discerning Mission: Leading Change” Diocesan Leadership Programme; and iii) preparing to lead the Retreat Day for St. Mary Becontree in Dagenham on 20 May. 17. Presiding over nine funerals at HT. 18. Saying farewell to Rev Rosemary and her husband Chris on 16 April after many years of service at HT. 19. Welcoming Rev Kate Szejnmann as our new Associate Curate on 23 April – what a blessing for all of us! 20. Welcoming Michael and Alan from Teen Challenge Drug Rehabilitation Programme (30 April). There have been some challenges on the way, including in my private life, especially with my mother’s illness and recent death. And yes, there are still lots of things that I have not got round doing simply due to sheer business, including i) establishing a regular pattern of pastoral visits; ii) surveying our congregation in regards to their heart and vision; iii) forming a Leadership team; iv) injecting new blood into our ministries; and v) connecting with our neighbourhood. Overall, however, I am extremely positive and feel very grateful for the last 9 months: I have been amazed about the blessings poured out, and I have a clear sense that we are on a very exciting journey of renewal. Chris ******* 6 ## **5) PCC SECRETARY’S REPORT** ## _Introduction:_ The Parochial Church Council [PCC] is the main governing body of Holy Trinity and an integral part of the running of the Church. Together with the incumbent and churchwardens, the PCC takes decisions both on specific matters affecting the Church and upon general matters of concern to the parish, the Church and the congregation. Most members are elected annually although there are some who, by virtue of their office [for example the Incumbent, Churchwarden(s), Treasurer and members of the Deanery Synod] enjoy automatic membership. The Council meets on a regular basis throughout the year. ## _Annual Overview:_ The PCC receives regular updates on topics such as Church finance, Church halls and fabric, H & S, Security, Safeguarding and Deanery Synod. The PCC sanctioned a successful concert to raise funds for Christian Aid Week as well as promoting Lent lunches of which Christian Aid was the beneficiary. Committed to safeguarding Children, Young People, Victims of Domestic Abuse and Vulnerable Adults, the PCC has adopted the Church of England’s policies and best practice on safeguarding which may be found on the Church of England’s website: https://www.churchofengland.org/safeguarding/policy-and-practice-guidance The Holy Trinity PCC complies with its obligations under the Data Protection Act of 2018 (incorporating the General Data Protection Regulations [GDPR]. Rosemary Potten and Church warden, Chris Potten. ## _Conclusion:_ The aim of the PCC is, with God’s Grace, to work conscientiously on behalf of Holy Trinity and to decide upon policies which will benefit Church, congregation and the Barkingside community. Kaye Larbi, PCC Secretary. 7 *** ## **6) FINANCIAL REPORT AND STATEMENTS** See Holy Trinity General Funds Accounts in Appendix, and signed Audit Certificate at the end of this report. Laura Priestman will give a verbal report. *** ## **7) CHURCHWARDENS’ FABRIC REPORT** Covid-19 restrictions have now eased. Our buildings have been open this year, although strict measures have been in place at times, and we have continued with some of our regular activities. Our maintenance and statutory testing have been carried out on all our three building as required. ## Trinity Hall Trinity Hall is hired out to ‘New Birth Day Nursery’. Their building is maintained externally on “Parish Work Days”, and our Thanks to Andrew Curran for doing the gas boiler and plumbing matters when needed. ## Parish Hall Our regular hirers have been back using Parish Hall, sometimes with some changes to their times to enable extra cleaning and no over-lapping of groups. Casual bookings are slowly increasing, and our thanks go to Elaine Field for undertaking the extra cleaning and preparation between these hirings, and to Andrew Curran for maintaining the drainage and repairing plumbing items. Extra lighting has been installed for the outside of the hall, and the path to / from the church. Wi Fi has been installed, courtesy of the M.U. ## Churchyard The churchyard is maintained by Westerleigh Grounds Maintenance, working in partnership with the London Borough of Redbridge. They do cut the grass, and generally maintain the area. They occasionally undertake other maintenance to the large trees, although we do feel that more could be done! We are also very fortunate to have regular gardening and planting by Kaye and Miranda Larbi, who do lots of maintenance “in the background” both within the churchyard and on the approaches to Parish Hall. We received more bulbs again this year, so these were planted in October and they flowed beautifully. 8 Our “Eco Group” has introduced bird boxes and a “bee hotel” made at the Tuesday Drop In (Both have had “residents”!). There are plans to further expand the church’s “Eco” activities and make better use of the churchyard area. The two composters behind the church are ‘doing their thing’, and Tomatoes, Chillis, and other plants have done well behind the church in the sun. ## Church The pews have been removed, and replaced by new chairs, We have 10% with arms for assistance of those who have difficulty in getting up. The woodblock flooring has been completely renovated and re-polished. Our existing chairs were re-covered in the same fabric as the new ones. The chancel and choir stalls will remain, although redecoration and replacement of existing carpets will be undertaken when finances permit. We are very fortunate to have a team of volunteers who look after and complete various and numerous maintenance jobs on all three of our buildings throughout the year. P.A.T. Testing was undertaken at our “Work Day” on 1[st] April. Thanks to Dan Cook for doing this. The main electric circuits are due for their 5-year check this year. There are some items from the Quinquennial inspection still not completed. However, our new Quinquennial is due this year, so these can be sorted out then. Thank you to everyone who has helped to keep us up and running during these times and we look forward to the year ahead. Chris Stoneham, Chris Potten *** ## **8) DEANERY SYNOD REPORT** The Deanery Synod is the meeting where elected PCC representatives from each parish in the Deanery meet to hear about what is happening at Diocesan level in terms of policy and finances. The Synod usually meets three times a year, and is chaired by the Area Dean, currently Rev Martyn Hawkes. The business of the meeting is determined by the Deanery Standing Committee. The current Deanery Synod representatives are: Trisha McCarthy, Stephen Gilson, Grace Man (replacing Maxine Paul who is now ex-officio in her capacity as President of the Diocesan Mothers Union and is an elected member of the Deanery Standing and Pastoral Committee). The format of the meetings is fairly standard, with a business element, and a topic of interest/discussion. In 2022, Synod welcomed Bishop Lynne as the new Bishop of Barking 9 In June, Synod had a presentation on “Growing Good” which explores the potential for combining the Church’s role in social justice with other agencies to achieve growth through partnership working. ` In November, Deanery Synod was addressed by Bishop Guli, who shared her faith journey, and her plans for the Diocese, including responses to challenges facing the Church. She introduced the concept of “Travelling Well Together”. In February, we had a talk from the advocacy body “Citizens UK” which gives advice, gathers statistics, and suggests openings when tackling large scale projects. There is a membership fee element which could prove to be a deterrent. Deanery Synod covers a wider remit than just local concerns, including the allocation of the Parish Share which has undergone a major change this year and provoked some major special meetings with incumbents and parish treasurers to iron out; what new ideas and projects are coming from Diocesan Synod and local initiatives. Stephen Gilson *** ## **9) PRAYER CHAIN REPORT** Our prayer chain continues to be to be both inspiring and supportive. Members on our e-mail list regularly pray for those for whom prayer is requested. There is such power in prayer and God in His mercy has blessed our mission. The WB comprised traditionally of Gemma Cook (main singer), Mike Priestman (keyboards), Callum Gentry (drums), and Nigel (singing once a month). 10 Recently Kate Szejnmann joined the WB and will lead once a month (singing and keyboard). Nigel Colvert and Chris Potten (recently retired) have traditionally operated the sound desk, power point, and live-streaming during the Sunday service (tech team). Very recently, Nigel started training up Jignesh Macwan and Jon Paul to join the tech team. The worship has been a particular blessing for our church, and we are enormously grateful for everyone who is part of this ministry. Fr Chris Szejnmann *** ## **’ 11) MOTHERS UNION REPORT –** _**Holy Trinity with St. Laurence Barkingside Branch**_ We give thanks to God for bringing us through another year. We have had both challenges and successes but knowing that He is always faithful we have prayerfully gone forward wherever He has led us. ## MEMBERSHIP Our membership numbers stand at 27 to date. ## MEETINGS We have continued to hold our regular monthly service in Holy Trinity church on the morning of the second Tuesday of each month after which we adjourn to the Parish Hall to join in fellowship at our “Tuesday Drop In” project. A time where we can catch up with friends old and new. However, the December Service was that of our annual Carol Service, which we moved to the afternoon, to enable us to invite other branches and diocesan members to join us, followed by tea and mince pies in Parish Hall. This was, as always, a wonderful and reflective start to the Christmas season. On the fourth Friday of each month, we held our evening meetings on Zoom and, where possible, invited speakers to join us finishing with a time of Evening Prayer. These meetings have enabled some of our members who have either moved away or cannot be with us on the Tuesday mornings to still meet and catch up on all the news. ## OUR BRANCH PROJECTS ## TUESDAY DROP-IN God is amazing! as we continue to go from strength to strength with an average of 35 people coming along each week. They are of all ages from babies to ninety plus years and come from all backgrounds and are of all faiths or of no faith. It never ceases to humble me to see God at work in such a wonderful way. My thanks must go to the team who so willingly come along each week to set up and serve, to do various craft activities, to knit and natter, play games and be willing to listen to and pray with those in need. Recently we and the church have joined the warm space scheme. During the year the Knit and Natter group knitted hats and scarves along with squares to make 25 blankets for the shoe box appeal. We joined with the church to cover and fill the sixty-six shoe boxes, which this year went to children in Ukraine through Children in Distress. ## CONTACT CENTRE We were challenged this year to keep the contact centre open owing to a drop in our volunteer numbers and lack of applications from families coming to fruition. However, we decided to go ahead with getting our re-accreditation for another three years from NACCC seeing that we are the only Mothers Union run centre in the Diocese and there being a real need for centres like ours. We had families with us up until the summer holidays, who then moved on from needing the 11 centre. No new applications were finalised between September and December but we are now facilitating contact again. ## CARD CRAFT This is held in St Laurence Church and led by Debroah Wheeler on the first Thursday of the month at 1.30pm during term times and is a well-attended outreach group with a good mix of M U members and other ladies. The group have made a variety of cards for birthdays and Christmas and learnt several different crafting techniques throughout the year. ## OTHER ACTIVITIES We held the Diocesan Services for Mary Sumner Day in August and for the Global Day of 16 days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence in November, both of which were live streamed throughout the Diocese, and we hosted one of the CDMU Member’s Days for Branches and Diocesan members in our area in October where we came together to worship and to learn about the current Mothers Union theme of Transformation Now. Some of us attended the Diocesan Council Meeting in May and the Annual Festival Service and AGM in November each held in Chelmsford. Within the Branch we took part in our President’s Challenge of growing sunflowers for the Summer of Hope campaign run by Mary Sumner House, gifted a book from our Branch to each child baptised at our church and supplied the flowers to be given out at the Mothering Sunday Service. We also continue to send a card to each member on their birthday and we pray for each other throughout the year by having our prayer partners. May we continue to grow in faith and may God guide and strengthen us to do His work in the days ahead. Tricia McCarthy, Branch Leader *** ## **12) TRINITY TIMES** There are now 38 Annual Subscriptions for Trinity Times, and these regular readers help to defray the photocopying expenses. The price has risen to £12 a year. We are however anxious that people be “given” the magazine if that’s unaffordable. The purpose of the magazine is: “Spreading the Good News”, Information, Communication, Sharing, Entertaining, and ‘Keeping in Touch’. The Mag is also a useful “tool” to publicise the Church Activities to those “casual” visitors, so if you want to give one away to a friend please feel free to take one. Several people at the Tuesday Drop-Ins take a copy away with them. It has also been good to help deliver the magazines and the deliveries have proved a valuable way of keeping in touch with those who are “isolated” or who have no immediate family. We also supply copies to St Francis Church. 12 There is also an increase in the number of magazines being circulated by email or WhatsApp, and these provide outreach to those friends who like to keep in touch. We send email copies of the Magazine to those overseas, the local Press, and to Advertisers. If you or a friend or neighbour would like an email copy, please do not hesitate to ask. The magazine records the main events in our Church life, and also has space for “general” items, as well as articles for “Evangelism” . We have a growing number of “outside” contributors who submit regular interesting articles of a more general nature. If you have any stories, news items, or testimony, then please feel free to submit them to me early in each month!
