Charitable Objectives
The charity is governed by a constitution which states that it5 principal purpose is the
advancement of the Christian faith according to the principles of the BaptlSt denomination to
include the advancement of education, community service and such other general charitable
purposes in such parts of the United Kingdom and the world as the church shall determine.
The church occupies premises which are held by the East Midland Bapt15t Trust Company Ltd,
in trust which is entirely compatible with the above objective.
Organisational Structure and Decision-making Processes
Members of the church are accepted in accordance with the constitution which requires them
to be or to have been publicly baptised on their profession of faith in Jesus Christ or following
other modes of baptlsm to renew their public profession of faith in Jesus Christ.
The member5, meeting normally takes place 6 times per year and has responsibility for the
overall policies of the church. In accordance with the constitution, the members appoint up
to twelve trustees, who together with the minister, church secretary, treasurer and property,
finance administration IPFAI officer, also appointed by the members, and collectively known
as the diaconate, meet monthly and are responsible for the day to day running of the church's
work and witness, and the financial and legal aspects of the charity.
All the members are encouraged to take an appropriate part in the spiritual and practical tasks
involved in the furtherance of the charitable objective. Relevant matters may be submitted
to the church meeting by the trustees for guidance or may be raised by members in church
meeting for further consideration by the trustees. Though the constitution permits decisions
to be made at church meeting by appropriate majorities, the church seeks to work by
consensus wherever possible.
Membership
During the year to 31st December 2023 two people were publicly baptised in the name of
Jesus Christ our Lord and 5aviour.
The church now has a membership of 135, and a larger congregation of non-members,
approximately 60% of whom are female. We are also blessed, with 25 to 30 children and
young people attending church each Sunday.
The fellowship is a warm, friendly, faith-filled and committed group of believers. Our mission
statement, "Love Jesus, Love Others, Make Disciples"
underpins our outlool< and time
together. Currently pastoral care within the fellowship is an informal network supported by a
prayer chain for people with specific needs. The fellowship and the wider com munity have
varying access to IT and 50 the church communicates through our website, a monthly church
magazine and a dedicated WhatsApp group.

Trustees, Report
Mansf ield Road Baptist Church is in a period of transition. Consequently, this year has been a
time of both reflection and looking forward, a time for discerning God's plan for us as a church
and as individuals. Although this process has created many challenges we put our faith in God,
his active love, faithfulness, and mercy towards us.
It was with some sadnes5 that the church was informed in June that our minister would be
stepping down from his role. We formally recognised and thanked both Andy and Mary for
their work with 3 special service in July. The service was an emotional occasion, but was a
fitting tribute to the patient, humble and loving work that Andy and Mary had carried out
within the church and the wider community.
The church contlnued God's work in Sunday Services, the Renew Café, Toddler, Youth, and
Men's Groups and through the Shalom Fellowship. The church maintained its support for
families by providing funeral and wedding services. Deacon's meetings focussed on planning
for the future. Church meetings, now held after a Morning service, allowed the wider
membership to be kept up to date with developments and take part in decision making.
People were also kept informed via the church magazine and website. We continued to
receive support from our regional minister Rev Mike Fegredo and Rev David Pile our
moderator.
As part of the church's planning and the need to search for a new minister two "vision days"
were held on Saturday mornings in September and October. Mike Fegredo facilitated prayer
and OLttlined the process of seeking a new minister. The congregation was given a
questionnaire at the end of October to add to this process. In total over one hundred people
were actively involved in discerning God's vision for the church, the minister we feel we need
and what would bo needed from the church community. By the end of the year a church
profile had been created.
Several organSsatlons attended the fellowship to provide people with the opportunity to
receive information on their work. In addition, the church provided financial support to
several charities.
At the end of the year our organist, Tony Peace, told the church that he was standing down
from that role. We thank Tony for his service over many year5 and thanks are also due to the
church members, trustees, the church administrator, and the newly appointed cleaner for
continuing God's work within our community and beyond.
We give God thanks as he continues to build our community.

BASIS OF INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given
by the Charity CommiSs￿ners. An examination includes a review of the accounting
records kept by the charrty and a comparison of the accounts presenled with Ihose
records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the
accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such
matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence Ihal would
be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on
the accounts.

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention

Review of Financial Position 2023
The accounts have been prepared on a Receipts and Payments basis. In 2023 the church
continued to recover from the pandemic. Church income benefitted from the hiring out of
room5 again together with an increased number of funerals. Income from the hiring out of
rooms is still nothing like pre-pandemic levels but increased in 2023. The combined income
from room-hire lincluding church house rent) and funerals was £IOK more than In 2022. So,
although freewill offerings reduced significantly, this was largely offset by the increase in
income from room hire and funerals.
Andy, our minister, continued to be signed off as sick throughout 2023. From February his
stipend and pension were paid from a BU insurance policy. This income is included under
grants received. The church continued to pay manse rent and council tax until August a year
on from Andvs first signing off.
More improvements to the church building were carried out in 2023. These included new
carpets in the ministerfs office and adjoining meeting roorn. The main property expenses
were for electricity and insurance. These amounts are highlighted in the monthly analysis for
deacons and the church meeting.
Total income for the year, including Dep051t Account interest of £1,436 was £133,770 an
increase of £9.5K compared with 2022. Agreed expenditure was £118,431 giving a surplus of
£15,339 which was added to the church's reserves. The church had agreed a deficit budget
for 2023.
The charity operates a general reserve policy that states reserves should not be less than six
months of the annual costs of running and maintaining the charity. At the close of 2023 the
church's deposit5 totalled £IIO,000 compared with £87,000 in 2022.
The current account is maintained at a level to meet short term cash flow. All other fund5 are
invested in BU deposit accounts- £50,000 in a 7-day notice account which adds interest
qLFarterly and £60,000 In a l- year fixed account which adds interest on maturity in March
2024. The 2023 accounts only show interest added by December 2023.
The church is an employer participating in a pension scheme known as the Baptist Pension
Scheme and wh'ich is administered by the Pension Trustee (Baptist Pension Trust Limited}.
The minister is a member of this scheme, and current pension provision is being made
through the Defined Contribution Plan within the Scheme. Members pay 8Yo of pensionable
income and the employer pays IO%. Most of the church's Colltribution was covered by the
insurance policy.
In 2023 voluntary giving was further reduced. Some members who pald by direct debit have
died. Others have been forced by circumstances to reduce the amount given each month. The
number of member5 using weekly envelope5 for their offering has also reduced. Occasional
givin& however, has increased helping to reduce losses. Links with the Shalom Fellowship
continue to thrive and bear fruit. The reliance on an aging membership continues but is less

pronounced and other source5 of income Slowly continue to recover as church and
community activities increase.
From August 2022 our minister has been on sick leave. The church is now in a pastoral vacancy
actively seeking a new minister.

Objectives and Activities
In order to achieve the principal objective of the church, which is set out above, the church
provides a variety of activities both to its membership and to the community generally. The
aim is to show the love of Jesus Christ in both word and deed and to bring people into a closer
relationship with Him as living Lord.
Central to the work and witness of the church is the provision of regular public services of
Christian worship,
Church Services
Church services take place on Sundays commencing at 10.30am with between 70 and 120
people attending. Services normally last for around 75 to 85 minutes. The church seeks to be
a friendly and welcoming community, and everybody 15 free to attend any of these service5
and events regardless of ethnicity, background or lifestyle.
Our worship is predominantly contemporary with some traditional songs led by a small group
of musicians or the use of recorded music and videos which create an informal and relaxed
atmosphere. There are age-appropriate children and youth activities 5UPPOrted by
volunteers. Children leave the service and go to their classes after around 10 minutes of the
start of worship.
There is a group within the congregation who form the "Shalom Fellowship" who hold
separate services on the first Sunday afternoon of each month.
Our services strengthen the bonds between us. and also provide many opportunities to reach
out to others who visit. Our main service of worship on a Sunday morning has an attendance
that continues to grow. Many people are involved in the preparation of each service: The
minister plans the preaching themes; others lead prayers and contribute readings.
The church is decorated with flowers by volunteers, Volunteers prepare and serve
cornmunion and also prepare and serve tea and coffee at the end of the service.
The youth group and junior church have also led services which have been both thought
provoking and full of energy and hope for the future.

Youth Group Report
The Mansfield Road Baptist Church youth group meets every Sunday morning during the
church service. There are 25 young persons on the roll, but this varies each week with an
average of 15 to 20 persons attending. The age range 15 from 13 years old to 21 years old and
there's a mixture of boys and girls from different backgrounds.
Discussions and 2Ctivities are approached from different perspectives but sharing the same
purpose and goals. This group works together as a team and everyone gets involved.
The youth group led youth services on Mothering Sunday and the Christmas nativity service,
where they teamed up with the younger children to make it a family Service. Every young
person matter5.
We celebrate special days such as birthdays, Easter and Christmas.
Each child is
acknowledged with a gift on their birthday week on the Sunday. At Easter they receive
chocolate Easter eggs and at Christmas after the youth service there was a Christmas dinner
for each child and their families and each young person received a gift.
We've had guest speakers from the ambulance service demonstrating emergency care such
as CPR and choking. We've had a police officer showing what the uniform looks like and
encouraging them that tho police are their friends. They spoke about drug use and how they
affect and the effects they havo on young people. It was also highlighted how School children
are used to traffic and deal with drugs.
Summer outings are the biggest attractions. We went to Mablethorpe last year. It was the
wettest day, but we had fun playing team bowling and other inside games. Thi5 year the
youth group did special cards and cocktail doilies for international nurse's day and gave them
to the nurses at the city hospital.
As a group we have grown spiritually and ask for your continued prayers and support.
We are blessed and honoured to be a part of the Mansfield Road Baptist Church. Thank you

Young Disciples
We currently have between 8 and 12 children each weok regularly attending as well as visiting
children from time to time. This is an increase on last year. We spend each week sharing our
news, a bible story and activities to help to explore the theme using the Root5 resources.
The children particularly enjoy the games and the craft activities and show a good
understanding of the bible stories. We took part in the youth services at Christma5 reprising
the nativity story 'Jesus' birthday party, and the Mother's Day service. Our young disciples
have grown in confidence thls year with many of them very keen to read in church.
We are always looking for new volunteers and anyone who would be happy to lead a session
or two each term. Materials are provided to help plan the sessions. Please speak to Jenny
Saunders if you are interested in supporting this thriving ministry. It is a pleasure to work
with such a lovely group of children and we are thankful for the continued support from our
current volunteer5.

Toddler Group
The toddler group provides a safe, caring and welcoming environment where parents,
grandparents and other carers and their toddlers can begin to experience the love and reality
of Jesus Christ.
The toddler group also aims to Support individuals and provide opportunities for people to
volunteer and build community.
The toddler group meets on a Monday morning and has between 18 and 20 children in
attendance, plus 8 to 10 adults accompanying them. The group is staffed by six volunteers.
The children enjoy light refreshments prepared by the volunteers, and there is time to play
with the many different toys donated by the community, and a singing time by the piano. A
donation is given for refreshments and for entrance.
We had an annual Christmas colebratlon with a party, food and face painting.
A Community Engagement Project Manager for Read on Nottingham, part of the National
Literacy, attended one of the toddler sessions to deliver a story telling and singing session.
Families receivod an Early Years flyer that contèined tips and advice on early speech and
language ideas they could try at home and a free book.
Men's Group
The men's group normally meet fortnightly. Bible reading and prayer is our guiding principle.
We share stories, play dominoe5 and other board games. We also plan outings to the seaside
annually.
Sirtce our last Christmas meal together December 2022, the number5 have fallen.
The Covid lockdown 15 partly to blame, and a number of our members are too old to attend,
and some have passed away whi15t others are too ill. However, we do meet in fellowship for
our fortnightly get together.
Most recently, we have joined in with the Thursday Renew Café, in order to share fellowship
together. We have learned a new game, a different type of dominoe5 called tri-ominos.
Playing this game requires deep concentration and focus.
Funeral Ministry
Mansfield Road Baptlst Church has an extensive funeral ministry, supporting the local
comm unity in the provision of premise5 for funerals and assisting with the provision of a
service with a minister, an organist and overheads as required. Funerals can have huge
attendances and can be similar to the managing of a large public event, with sometimes
over500 people attending. Oftenthe main hall ha5to be utilized tofacilitate the overspill
from the Sanctuary. It is undoubtedly the church's highest profile ministry and one for
which it is well known.

We work closely with the funeral directors, ministers, musicians, and families daily to
ensure that we deliver the best service for the family at a very difficult time for them.
Mansfield Road Baptist Church has become a prominentfixture forfunerals especially in
the local African Caribbean community and has now become a part of many people's
family heritage and a tradition to ensure family services take place here.
In assisting With the preparation of services, the church offers emotional support to
families as well practical advice a nd guidance as required for the preparation of the day.
It take5 considerable sensitivity when dealing with funeral arra ngements, as friends and
family members are emotional and grieving. At time5, there 15 also a need to help to ease
family d isputes. and to provide guidance with tributes.
It 15 satisfying to know that the ftjneral ministry reache5 Out to a mass of people and creates
an opportunity to share the word of God, evangelising to people who would not usually
attend a church service.
In 2023 fifty-two funerals took place at Mansfield Road Baptist Church.
Weddings & Vow Renewals
During 2023, we had the pleasure of facilitating three weddings and two vow renewals.
Renew Café
The Renew Café at MRBC was set up in September 2022. It is one of around 250 Renew
Wellbeing spaces around the UK. We are open every Thursday between 1.30 and 4pm, and
anyone is welcome to come along. Everyone who come5. whether they are part ofthe MRBC
church family or from the wider community, is assured of a warm welcome and a cup of tea
or coffee and biscuits. People have the chance to do a craft or a jigsaw, play 3 game or just
chat or sit quietly.
There are several volunteers who take turn5 to go along to set up, to welcome visitors, and to
lead prayers before the cafe opens and at the of the session. Our ethos is that volunteers and
visitors share the space, 50 we serve each other. Everyone at the cafe is invited to join the
quiet prayer time at the end of the afternoon to reflect on their day. People do not have to
join in, but they generally do.
We have been blessed with seeing many new faces over the month5, as well a5 occasionally
being joined by the men's group.
Just before Christmas 2023 Jenny Saunders arranged for pupils from a local school to join us
in our activities and to sing carols which everyone enjoyed. We have had craft sessions to
make cards and decorations in preparation for Christmas and Easter.
We have also been visited by social prescribing link workers. They are based in GP practices
in the local area, and their rolo is to signpost patient5 to sources of social support. As well as
telling us about their roles, the social prescribing link workers wanted to see what we can

offer. As they seemed to enjoy their time with us, we are hoping that they will feel confident
in directing people to the Renew café.
Overall, the Renew café has become a place to welcome friends old and new, and to share
the love of our saviour, Jesus Christ.

Shalom Fellowship
We are Shalom Fellowship. On the first Sunday of every month 5-6 families gather to join in
fellowship and worship together. There are also guests coming frequently to learn and grow
with us in faith and we all contribute together to make them feel well and supported.
We have refreshments after the service where we gather and spend time with each other.
For anyone who doesn't have a church to go to, our5 15 open and welcomes all with open
arm5. Shalom has encouraged 2 people to attend the service5 who were not Christian and
now they are always happy to come to church and learn.about God.
Our whole youth are Asian Christians and we try and connect with all our community as much
as possible to make all feel welcome and appreciated. Our youth also do a service fully led by
them every few weeks which ensures participation amongst themselves. This includes
preaching, singing songs and doing the prayers. M05t of our group are members of Mansfield
Road Baptist Church.
Buildings
Our church building constructed in 1912 is a very old and large structure that requires
extra and regular maintenance.
The church has a large sanctuary that can seat up to 400 people, a hall that can seat up
to 100 people and is used for large meetings, communal meals and the serving of

refreshments. It is also used to house the toddler group on Mondays and accommodate
spill overfrom large attendance atfunerals.
There are also an extensive suite of rooms providing spaces that can accommodate a
wide range of activities, for example, youth group and young disciples meeting space on
Sundays. They are also used as community spaces for meetings and other activities.
There have been considerable developments to the church estate in the last few years.
new all electric heating System has been installed. A new energy efficient lighting
system has been completed and the roof of the building has been repaired. However, as
an old building, the church roof is constantly having to be repaired.
There is a new alarm and CCTV system and panic button installed for the protection of
church users, staff and volunteers.
A house owned bythe church situated on site has been renovated and its rental provides
significant income for the church.

Recently refurbished to a high standard, it 15 most welcoming and accommodating for our
members and all who use our church building.

We wantto sing praises to our God, and to give Him thanks and praise for his mercies, in
helping us to grow spiritually in service, to His Holy name, at a most difflcult time in the
life of our church.

RESPECTIVE RESPONSIBILITIES OF TRUSTEES AND EXAMINER
As the charity's trustees you are responsible for the preparat￿n of the accounts.,
you consider that the audit requirement of Section 14412) of the Charities Act 2011
(the Act} does not apply.11 is my responsibility to slate, on the basis of procedures
specified in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners under
Section 145(5llb) of the Act, whether particular matters have come lo my attention
in my examination ofthe accounts.
BASIS OF INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT
My examinalton was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given
by the Charrty Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting
records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those
records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the
accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such
matters. The procedures undertaken Ilo not provide all the evtdence that would
be required in an audit, and cons8quenlly I do not express an audit opinion on
the accounts.
INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S STATEMENT
In Gonneclion with my examination, no matter has come lo my attention
11) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect
the requirements
