The Church occupies premises which are held by the East Midland Baptist Trust Company Ltd, on Trusts which are entirely compatible with the above object. ## **Organisational Structure and Decision-making processes** Members of the Church are accepted in accordance with the Constitution which requires them to be or to have been publicly baptised on the profession of faith in Jesus Christ or following other modes of baptism to renew their public profession of faith in Jesus Christ. The Members’ meeting normally takes place 6 times per year and has responsibility for the overall policies of the church. In accordance with the Constitution, the members appoint up to twelve Trustees, who together with the minister, church secretary and Treasurer (who are also appointed by the members), and collectively known as the Diaconate, meet monthly and are responsible for the day to day running of the church’s work and witness, and the financial and legal aspects of the charity. All the members are encouraged to take an appropriate part in the spiritual and practical tasks involved in the furtherance of the charitable objective. Relevant matters may be submitted to the Church meeting by the Trustees for guidance or may be raised by members in Church meeting for further consideration by the Trustees. Though the constitution permits decisions to be made at Church meeting by appropriate majorities, the Church seeks to work by consensus wherever possible. ## **Membership** The church currently has 134 members and a larger congregation of non - members approximately 70% of whom are female. The fellowship is a warm, friendly, faith-filled and committed group of believers. Our mission statement, “Love Jesus, Love Others, Make Disciples” underpins our outlook and time together. Currently pastoral care within the fellowship is an informal network supported by a prayer chain for people with specific needs. The fellowship and the wider community have varying access to IT and so the church communicates through our website, a monthly church magazine and a dedicated WhatsApp group **.** ## **Trustees Report** 4 It has been a trying period for Mansfield Road Baptist Church members and the whole congregation. Having emerged from a period of uncertainty through covid. We were looking forward to a spiritual and successful year. However this was not destined to be. God works in mysterious ways and whilst we as Christians are planning he has other ideas and other plans for us as a church. August 2022 was the last time our minister Andy Wilson stood on the pulpit and delivered his sermon to the congregation at Mansfield Road Baptist Church. Since then our minister Andy Wilson has been laid up through illness and at the time of writing this report it has been confirmed that our minister will not be able to return to ministry, Andy has relinquished his role as minister. Despite all that and, by the grace and spirit of our lord and master working though the deacons and others, Mansfield Road Baptist Church is still the holy place to visit and worship. Although the leaders and others working as a team stepped up to fill the void it was also necessary to seek and receive outside help. This was achieved by the engagement of Mike Fegredo, Regional minister with the East midland Baptists Association. Mikes role was to offer spiritual and practical guidance during those very difficult times for which we are most grateful. We have now appointed David Pile, a serving church minister from Basford Road Baptist Church, as a volunteer moderator to guide and support the deacons in fulfilling their Leadership and pastoral roles in the church. To chair church meeting and guiding members as they discern the mind of Christ together for the life and future of the church. David will also be supporting us by chairing church meetings and guiding leaders of the church. We are most grateful to the members of Basford Road Baptist Church for allowing David to take up the voluntary position and to David for offering this valuable service. Through the Grace of God the almighty, we will now begin the task of seeking to appoint a Minister to replace Andy. The Lord be with us in ever endeavours. We can give God thanks for the growth in our congregation especially those of young people who will be the future of our church. It is my responsibility to state, on the basis of procedures specified in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners under Section 145(5)(b) of the Act, whether particular matters have come to my attention in my examination of the accounts. ## BASIS OF INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the accounts. ## INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S STATEMENT In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention (1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements (a) to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 130 of the 2011 Act; (b) to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the Act have not been met: or (2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached. Signed Dated: 23 February 2023 Mrs Alison Thomas, Treasurer of Thomas Helwys Baptist Church Church St, Nottingham NG7 1SJ **Review of Financial Positon 2022** The accounts have been prepared on a Receipts and Payments basis. In 2022 the church began to recover slowly from the pandemic. Church income benefitted from the hiring out of rooms again 8 together with the increased number of funerals. Income from the hiring out of rooms is still nothing like pre-pandemic levels but increased significantly in the second half of 2022. More improvements to the church building were carried out in 2022 including a new carpet in the sanctuary and conversion to LED lighting throughout the buildings. Together with the removal of all gas use in 2021, this will contribute greatly to more sustainable energy use in the future. Total income for the year, including Deposit Account interest of £3,727 was £124,267 and agreed expenditure £157,115 giving a deficit of £32,848 which was covered by the church’s reserves. The charity operates a general reserve policy that states reserves should not be less than six months of the annual costs of running and maintaining the charity. At the close of 2022 the church’s deposit account was £87K The Church is an employer participating in a pension scheme known as the Baptist Pension Scheme and which is administered by the Pension Trustee (Baptist Pension Trust Limited). The Minister is a member of this scheme, and current pension provision is being made through the Defined Contribution Plan within the Scheme. Members pay 8% of pensionable income and the employer pays 10%. Pensionable income for 2022 was £31230, employer contribution £3123, employee contribution £2498 and the deficit contribution £2192. Total Pension contributions for 2022 were £7813. As at 31 June 2022, the employer debt within the DB Plan was estimated at £13600 (£33100 in December 2021) and is based on the service of five previous ministers and their dependents. The Baptist Union made other arrangements for paying off the deficit of assets in the Defined Benefit (DB) Plan when it reached an agreement during the year which meant that these debt repayments were reduced to a nominal £1 per month. The current account is maintained at a level to meet short term cash flow. All other funds are invested through the East Midlands Baptist Trust Company in the Charles Stanley Equity Portfolio. This will change in 2023 as the East Midlands Trust Company closes down. The funds will be transferred to Baptist Union Deposit Accounts ensuring that deposits are available to assist in Baptist mission. Over recent years, there have been indications that free will offerings to the church are more broadly based than previously. Some members who paid by direct debit have died. Others have been forced by circumstances to reduce the amount given each month. The number of members using weekly envelopes for their offering has also reduced. Occasional giving, however, has increased helping to reduce losses. Links with the Shalom Fellowship continue to thrive and bear fruit. The reliance on an aging membership continues but is less pronounced and other sources of income slowly continue to recover as church and community activities increase. From August 2022 our minister has been on sick leave and the church has since learned that he will be standing down leading to a pastoral vacancy from the middle of 2023. Alan Joddrell Treasurer June 2023 9 ## **Objectives and Activities** In order to achieve the principal objective of the church, which is set out above, the Church provides a variety of activities both to its membership and to the community generally. The aim is to show the love of Jesus Christ in both word and deed and to bring people into a closer relationship with Him as living Lord. Central to the work and witness of the Churches the provision of regular public services of Christian worship. There was a focus on Pastoral visits in people’s homes in 2022 following the end of the Covid Pandemic with a church member and a volunteer. ## **Church Services** Church service takes place on Sundays commencing at 10.30am has between 70 and 120 people attending, services normally last for around 75 to 85 minutes. The church seeks to be a friendly and welcoming community, and everybody is free to attend any of these services and events regardless of ethnicity, background or lifestyle. Our worship is predominantly contemporary with some traditional songs led by a small group of musicians or the use of recorded music and videos which create an informal and relaxed atmosphere. There are age appropriate children and youth activities supported by volunteers, children leaves the service and go to their classes after around 15 minutes. There is a group within the congregation who form the “Shalom Fellowship” who hold separate services on some Sunday afternoons. Our services strengthen the bonds between us, and also provide many opportunities to reach out to others who visit. Our main service of worship on a Sunday morning has an attendance that continues to grow. Many people are involved in the preparation of each service: The minister plans the preaching themes; others lead prayers and contribute readings. The music group leads the singing and the church is decorated with flowers. We also appreciate those who prepare communion, and those who serve tea and coffee at the end of the service. The youth group and junior church have also led services which have been both thought provoking and full of energy and hope for the future. ## **Youth Group Report** The MRBC youth group meet every Sunday morning. There are 20 young persons on roll but this varies each Sunday but with an average of 15 Persons. The age range is from 13 years to 20yrs old and has a mixture of males and females. Discussions are approached from different angles showing the same purpose and goals. As a close knit group they always ensure that everyone gets involved, they look out for and after each other. 10 The youth group leads youth services and also help out with younger children when required. We celebrate special days such as birthdays, Easter and Christmas. Each birthday is celebrated so they are given a gifts and are acknowledged on their special day. To celebrate Christmas we have a youth service followed by a Christmas dinner for the young people and their families. This year 2022 sees more young people from our group going off to university in September. We also had guest speakers discussing mental health and the transition to university while keeping the faith. We offer 1-2-1 sessions with each young person offering a safe space where they can open up ask for help and advice when needed. For recreation and play the young people and their families/carer were given a day out at the seaside in July 2022, funded by donations from outside sources, which they thoroughly enjoyed. The youth group acknowledged International Nurses day by creating book marks and cards which they proudly presented to nurses at the Nottingham City Hospital to say thanks for the work that they do. As a group we ask for continued prayers and support. We are blessed and very grateful to be a part of MRBC. Thank you Diana Palmer-Friz, Youth Leader ## **Young Disciples** We continue to thank God for the number of children attending in 2022 was usually between 8 and 12 each week. We have welcomed some new children in recent weeks and hope they continue to enjoy coming. We have looked at many different things this term. In one week we looked at how we can rely on Jesus to support us when we are going through difficult times. Each child made a 'joy jar by decorating an ordinary glass jar with stickers and tissue paper. Inside the jar we put slips of paper on which we wrote things that we were thankful for or that brought us joy. We could then go to the jar if we were having a difficult time and pull out some reminders of things to be joyful about. We have been thinking about how we respond to others and how God wants us to respond to others. We have talked about how we can welcome people into church but also how we can react to people we find difficult to get on with. This produced an interesting discussion a couple of weeks ago. I am always impressed with the Bible knowledge of our young people and their thoughts on the stories we study each week. 11 ## **Toddler Group** The toddler group provides a safe, caring and welcoming environment where parents, grandparents and other carers and their toddlers can begin to experience the love and reality of Jesus Christ. The toddler group also aims to support individuals and provide opportunities for people to volunteer and build community. Before lockdown it operated for three mornings per week attended by over 50 parents or careers and their pre –school children. The group now meets on a Monday morning and has between 15 and 18 children in attendance, with 8 volunteers. New mothers coming each week. When Toddlers reopened parents were overjoyed because they had missed the group terribly, there were many greetings and hugs in emotional reunions. Everyone celebrated together at Christmas with a party, food, face painting and traditional dancing. Light refreshments are provided, there is time to play with the many different toys and a singing time by the piano. A donation is given for refreshments and for entrance. ## **Men’s group** The men’s group was formed in the year 2000 by a small group of senior members of the church but has since grown in numbers and now we are a group numbering 35. The group’s main aim was for men to meet together share experiences and to discuss topics of the day and issues relating to men. The group meets fortnightly at Mansfield Road Baptist Church for prayers, Bible readings, discussions, tea and biscuits rounded off with a game of dominos. In 2022 we received visits from various speakers and professionals giving the group information on the importance of making a will, having a healthy diet, as well as on medical issues. We invite others from the church family and members of the local community so that they too can benefit from what the visiting speakers have to offer. We hosts special events throughout the year including one outing to the seaside this year numbering 50 people including other members of the church both male and female and other members of the community. We also put on a Christmas dinner where we invited both men and women to participate. In December 2022 we catered for approximately one hundred guests which was very successful. We look forward to a blessed and healthy 2023 David Dennis 12 ## **Funeral ministry:** Mansfield Road Baptist Church has (an extensive funeral ministry), supporting the local community in the provision of premises for funerals and assisting with the provision of a service with a minister, an organist and overheads as required. Funerals can have huge attendances and can be similar to the managing of a large public event, with sometime over 500 people attending. Often the main hall has to be utilized to facilitate the overspill from the Sanctuary. It is undoubtedly the church’s highest profile ministry and one for which it is well known. We work closely with the funeral directors, Ministers, musicians, and families daily to ensure that we deliver the best service for the family at a very difficult time for them. Mansfield Road Baptist Church has become a prominent fixture for funerals especially in the local African Caribbean community and has now become a part of many peoples family heritage and a tradition to ensure family services take place here. In assisting with the preparation of services the church offers emotional support to family’s as well practical advice and guidance as required for the preparation of the day. It takes considerable sensitivity as friends and family members whom are emotional and grieving. Sometimes there is a need to help to ease family disputes, provide guidance with tributes. It is satisfying to know that the funeral ministry reaches out to a mass of people and creates an opportunity to share the word of God, evangelising to people whom would not usually attend a church service. In 2022 39 funerals took place at Mansfield Road Baptist Church. ## **Outreach and Support** Nationally we support Baptist Home Mission and Christian Aid week. We are affiliated to the Baptist Union of Great Britain Regular giving BMS World Mission £4900 and Home Mission £4900 One off gifts: BMS World Mission-Uganda Appeal £120 Afghanistan Appeal £175 Ukraine Appeal £1200 Pakistan Floods £750 Framework £200 BMS World -general £85 One off gifts are mostly individual gifts via church giving rounded up by the church. For Ukraine the church matched individual giving. 13 ## **Shalom Fellowship** The Shalom fellowship was first created in 2019. We have been running well for 4 years and we hold services on the first Sunday of every month and whenever there is a special event. The amount of people in shalom is also gradually increasing. Us as the shalom fellowship see each other as one big family and always work together as a team. There has never been a moment where a member or family in shalom has not contributed, not been involved or has been excluded. Shalom runs with full management as everyone has a responsibility for certain things. This is what keeps shalom so intact. Shalom also gives support to those who cannot practise their faith openly due to religious barriers or any other reason. The women in shalom are also very strong in faith as they hold intercessor online prayers every Friday. Many women across the world also join these prayers. Occasionally, we women meet up for in person prayer meetings where we conduct interceding prayers. Shalom as a whole have a group chat on WhatsApp to communicate. The youth in shalom also have their own WhatsApp group chat where they do basic bible study. Shalom is very blessed with hearing and sharing testimonies. Many people that are not even in shalom send prayer requests and we fulfil these requests. Last but not least, I want to say a big thank you to MRBC for giving shalom the opportunity to grow bigger physically and spiritually and providing a platform to invite those who are in need of God. We are very blessed to be members of this church. ## **Buildings** Our church building constructed in 1912 is a very old and large structure that requires extra and regular maintenance. The church has a large sanctuary that can seat up to 400 people, a hall that can seat up to 100 people and is used for large meetings, communal meals and the serving of refreshments. There are an extensive suite of rooms providing spaces that can accommodate a wide range of activities. There have been considerable developments to the church estate in the last few years. A new all electric heating system has been installed. A new energy efficient lighting system has been completed and the roof of the building has been repaired. A house owned by the church situated on site has been renovated and its rental provides significant income for the church. There is a new alarm and CCTV system. 14 ## The Welcome Hall ## **Other services** Our Church building provide valuable accommodation for a number of other activities throughout the year including: - Gospel lounge: facilitating an evening of music, refreshments praise and worship for local people. - Wednesday evening prayer meeting where everyone is invited. - Occasional meeting place for people of Syrian heritage - Money matters: courses on money management for young people. - Karate classes for young people of Afghanistan heritage. ## **Thank you** We wish to thank all of the people, organisations and funders that we have worked with and who have contributed to a mostly successful 2022. - Volunteers and staff who played a pivotal role in the life of the church. - Funeral Directors: Co-op, Lymns, Crawleys and Baggleys for their role in helping to coordinate funerals and acting as go between bereaved families and ourselves. - Nottingham Health Association for giving us talks on health issues - Refugee Forum Youth Group: providing safe spaces for young refugees to meet. - Special thank you to the East Midlands Baptist Association for their generosity in allowing Mike Fegredo to give us both physical and spiritual guidance during this most difficult times.
