Chairs Report 2023

The main objective of the Friends is to raise money to enhance the experience that Marlborough St Mary’s offers the children. We try to increase the number of parents/carers to be involved with the Friends where we can, inviting volunteers to help with multiple fundraising events throughout the year. We continue as a committee to ensure that all our events our inclusive, we want to ensure costs are kept as low as possible for all activities and events and all donations are always kept voluntary for this reason.

Summary of Fundraisers and Events from 22/23

Christmas cards – These were popular, they offer a range of gifts through Cauliflower cards and the children that participate seem pleased with their purchases. We do get a reasonable amount of orders so we would like to continue to offer this.

The Balloon Race – We did this again this year and it didn’t raise as much as the previous year, but again it’s a fundraiser that we can offer, and participation is very much optional. Every purchase counts to support the school and it doesn’t cost the Friends to participate with Eco-racing.

Children in Need – Non-school dress day again working better for fundraising, we continue to ask for “voluntary donations” to alleviate pressure on families, but this subsequently enabled some people to give more.

Comic Relief – Non School Dress Day, again with voluntary donations we will continue to support these charities.

Christmas Fayre - Amazing Christmas Fair again. We welcomed so many families to the school to celebrate with us and the corridors were buzzing. Often a little too busy. We tried the Xmas market this year which had been suggested for a few years now. Although the idea was great it was just too much on the night and if we were to try again maybe a separate shopping evening would work better. The stalls, food and bar were a great success and as always the raffle was incredibly popular with wonderful donations from staff, family and businesses.

JustGiving page – The JustGiving campaign is still ongoing, we promote this over the course of the year in between events, the campaign is still up to date and families, carers, staff, and the public are encouraged to use the page for ad hoc donations if they can.

Coronation Tea towels – This year we decided to do Coronation tea towels as a little keep sake. We came in the school and supported the teachers in making sure every child did a drawing. We really do appreciate the staffs support with this an appreciate it isn’t always the easiest to organise. The sales for tea towels are always really popular but they weren’t as high this

time round - maybe because we did it earlier in the year and parents may purchase more if we did them near Christmas for gifts like previous years.

Bag2School – This worked well for us this past year and continues to do so; we have been booking regular slots for collections and continue to do so 3 – 4 times per year.

Second Hand uniform Sale – Again these are really popular, and we have also been able to support families and the children’s centre with uniform for new starters. We will continue to try to offer at least 1 per term more if we can. We are always very grateful for the donations from families of good condition uniform, and we will continue to keep the costs very low on resale.

Donations – We are very grateful to Claridge’s who again provided a significant donation to us for the Christmas books and the Easter eggs for the students at school. These donations make a huge difference, and we are always very grateful for the support of local companies.

GlamoRose Cakes and Raffaeles Ice Cream Van - Both Glamorose & Raffaeles have been great ways to raise some extra funds towards the school. We have had a few visits from both and are very popular, we have listened to feedback which has been amazing but also a few parents have said they are pricey and can make parents feel in an awkward position of having to buy there children one. We have taken this in to account and are hoping to do our own cake sales/ice cream sales over the next year.

Sponsored run - this was new this year to coincide with Sports Week and led by Miss Miles. The children loved this event and families were very supportive getting behind sponsoring their children. All children took part and the day was fun for all. The run would be great to do again but was very close to the Summer Fayre so would consider adjusting this as to not put too much pressure on families donating to two major events close together.

Triathlon - the school entered the triathlon this year organised by restless development. The Friends of Marlborough St Mary’s as the school charity were very grateful to receive a finds from restless development for the fundraising goals achieved by the teams that took part.

Bingo - Our first bingo night was amazing it went so well & we had more people come then expected we kept the cost low to make it affordable for everyone. We sold drinks and sweets/ crisps. The children and adults all had great fun and it’s definitely something we would be happy to do again.

Coronation and Valentines Disco – We were really excited to be able to host 2 discos this year, a Valentines disco and also disco to celebrate the Kings Coronation. We again kept ticket costs low. We had Marcus Lutner back again and supplied drink and a packet of crisps and the students attending had a great time. We had support from parents and staff to safely run the events and it was very popular, most students in the school were able to attend.

Summer Fayre – Unfortunately the Summer Fayre didn’t exactly go to plan due to the weather! It rained all day.

It was a very stressful start as we had to change all our planning and unfortunately had cancel the inflatables and pony rides we had booked. But we all came together and made it work and we are over the moon with how the Fayre went, we had an amazing amount of stalls, and the attendance was huge considering the weather was so awful. We were very understanding of the cost of living, so we kept stall prices low, despite this our takings were still extremely high for a Summer Fayre that didn’t go quite as we originally planned, which was amazing but the main aim was to have an event that really celebrated the school and provided a very fun end of year event for families to attend. The raffle we made up hampers with donations from families and local businesses, again we had a selection of top hampers and many more smaller hampers all which were great prizes. We had multiple local businesses selling tickets again.

This academic year – This year we are very pleased to have so many more volunteers on the committee all of which are enthusiastic with ideas and having a larger committee along with all of our class reps we hope we can expand on what we already do by bringing in new ideas. We have already have a date in mind for the Christmas Fayre which is Friday 8th December. We will also be working with Print Image for Christmas cards. We will also continue with our amazing class hampers. We are planning more school discos, bingos and maybe even an adult disco.

Are aim this year is to be able to subsidise school trips for the children - £10 per child.

Again, we as a committee commit to keeping all of our activities and fundraising events inclusive. All donations we request are voluntary and we are sympathetic to the cost of living for families. We will always ensure we are giving back with gifts at Christmas, Easter and keep some of our activities at cost rather than as fundraisers over the course of the year.

Thank You - Thank you to all Volunteers, without whom we are unable to raise the money that provides so much to our Children. Parents & Carers who support our events by helping get raffle prizes, helping to set up and clear up, donating prizes, promoting events, and most importantly attending events. It is hugely appreciated by us, the school, and the children – none of the fun would happen without them.

Thanks to Mr Crossman and Mr Goodman who have both been a great support to us and all of the staff that help organise, prepare for, help at and patiently work around our events. Karen who supports us with all of the finances in the school and Paul who has been a great help with site access for the events and both Karen and Paul staying very late after the Summer Fayre.

Thank you to the rest of the Committee, Becky, Claire, Rosy, Karen, Anita and Amy we have worked well as a team and accomplished so much this year we could not have done any of it without us all pulling together.

Thank you to our class reps this year. The class reps have helped ensure all our events were promoted well with parents and carers and we have had reps volunteer to help with distribution of items, collections, raffle prize donations and the uniform sales and of course reps coordinating parent helpers at the summer fayre.

Last but not least another huge thank you to Mrs Pawlaczek who was our teachers rep and is stepping down this year. Having Mrs P as our house support made a huge difference and we are extremely grateful for all her help.

Goodbyes –

This year we say a very sad goodbye to Becky who is stepping down as Co - Chair after 2 years in this role. Becky has been a massive part of the committee and we wouldn’t have been able to achieve what we have without her. Becky has been involved with the committee or as a class rep since her child started pre school at St Marys and throughout her daughters journeys at Marlborough St Marys and with Poppy now at St Johns we say goodbye as a school and thank you. You really will be missed Becs. Also, a massive thank you to both Claire and Rosy who are stepping down as Secretary and Co-Secretary. Again both Claire and Rosy have been part of the pre school committee Friends committee for many years and have both played a huge part in our success. They have both kindly offered to be class reps, so we are very lucky to still have them on the committee.

We are hugely grateful to all of you for your hard work over these years and we couldn’t support the school without such an amazing committee giving up their time so thank you all.
