Report of the trustses for the year ended 3￿ June 2024
The trustees present their annual directors, report and financial statements of the charity for
the year ended 30, June 2024 which are also prepared to meet the requiremerrts for
directors, report and accounts for Companies Act purposes.
The financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011. the Companies Act 2006, the
Memoranduffl and Articles of Association. and the Accounting and Reporting by Charities."
Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities prepanng their accounts in
accordance wilh the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of
Ireland {FRS 102}-
Objectives and activities
The purposes of the chartty are the alleviation and relief of poverty, hardship, and arising
therefrom in Conforman￿ wrth the pnnciples of the Emmaus Movement.
The provision of accommodation. or assistance in such rnvision, for hcrfneless people on
the Salford area and such other places as may see appropriate from time to time (the
"beneficianes')-
The rehabilitation of the benefiaaries. as appropriate. and the provisions of education.
training (including, without limitation, employment training) and work opportunÉties.
Satisfaction for the beneficiaries, Vlith the purpose of developing their skills to enable them to
gain employment in the future and thereby develop a sense of self-worth and dignity through
having a self-supporting lrfe.
The work of other Emmaus communrties and groups or other agencies in the relief of poverty
and homelessness, whether in the United Kingdom or elsewhere in the world, and, in
particular, (without limitation) by the exchange of resour￿$, infomiation and expertise with
other Emmaus projects worldwide.
The primary objective is the development of a self-sufficient community providing
accommodation and a meaningful voluntary work environment. with an appropnate level of
support for previousty homeless people, and other who may te soaalty disadvantsged. The
community provides a welcoming and supportive place to live and work and for each person
to develop within it.
On admission to the community, companions (our residents) relirtrquish y￿lfare benefits,
however housing benefit is claimed as companions are entrtled to such claims. The
community remains reliant on this income stream to provide the support services and homes
for companions. The charity's long-temi focus is to increase the income from the social
enterprise in such a way as to have a surplus, thus reducing reliance on daims for statutory
benefrts. However, trustees acknowledge that. for the foreseeable future, rt is not feasible to
set a timescale for achieving this.
The charity's business and income generating adivtties are the key focus for development
over the next 5 years. Additionally. the charity operates two strands of Solidarity work. the
broader traditional Solidartty activity of an Emmaus community, led by companions in
supporting those less fortunate than themsefves and, since 2017, the charity has also

EMMAUS SALFORD
0￿rated and is developing a Solidarity Outreach Programme for the viider Salford
communrty. This includes Lucie's Pantry (a soaal supemiarket). a school unifomi recycling
hub and the charrty operates the People's POD'S that are part of the A Bed Every Night
programme (ABEN) in Greater Manchester.
Public benefit
The trustees confimi that they have referred to the Charity Commission's guidance on public
benefil when reviewing the charity's aims and obj'ectives, in planning future activities. and
setting the policies for the year.
A review of our achlevements and perfornianca
We are proud of suc￿sSfUl￿ moving several of our Companions into their own independent
accommodation and especially because they have a¢hieved employment. We strive to
support our Companions to develop independence. It takes time and no one is forced to move
on unless they feel they are ready. The fact that several have moved on is a measure of our
suc￿Ss. We have supported Companions in training courses, developing their skills and
gaining in confidence. We have engaged Y￿th olher agenries, charities, and businesses to
ensure the best outcomes for our Companions.
Financlal revlew
This financial year has presented many challenges. The costs incurred in running the
Communrty Home, particulady gas and electricrty, have increased signrficantly. Nevertheless,
because of strid cost fflanagement and carefvl budgeting, we have maintained a secure
financial basis on which to build for the future. The very healthy reserves fund is essential
because we do need to find new premises which is proving a real challenge.
Investment powers and policy
Aside from retaining a prudent amount in reserves each year, most of the charity's funds are
to be spent in the short tem so there are few funds for any longer-tem investmenL
Reserves policy and going concem
The balance held in reserves at 30Tr June 2024 was £170.746 of whith £151,306 are free
resetves, after allowng for funds tied up in fixed assets.
The Iruslees consider that Emmaus Salford should hold suffiaent reseNes to..
Support the welfare of companions
Maintain Emmaus House and surrounding buildings
Support Lucie's Pantry
The charity's reserves will help to ensure that we can continue to provide accommodation
and work for our beneficiaries.
The trustees regularly review th8 charrty's rese￿e$ policy. During the financial years.
reserves have improved consistently and, although the figures have not necessarily
remained at the target level. the trading figures show a marked improvement, strengthening
the general perfonnance.

EMMAUS SALFORD
The policy of actively encouraging companions into employment and independent living,
although slow, has worked with a number of success stories. To complement this. new
procedures lo take on new companions to Yill the gaps. in the community have provided an
increasing number. resuhing in a constant occupation level and people able lo actively
engage in the work of the charty.
The trustees are confident that the system is working V￿11 and that the reserves are at a safe
operational level.
The trustees are aware of the need to maintain a strong reserves policy. A rigorous review of
expenditure has been undertaken and is maintained dunng the day-104ay operation of the
charity. Staff are alert to the need to be financially prudent in a diffiGult financial climate.
Financially caLAious management is the order of the day. mindful of the need to ensure that
reserves are Pfeserved.
Risk management
The Charrty is risk averse in all its activrties. Staff all complete training in all areas of
managing risk. The Chanty adheres to the standards required by Emmaus UK and takes
every step possible to ensure the sm¢X)th and efficient running of the organisalion.
Plans for Future Periods
The plans to redevelop the stte in Ftlzwarren Street Salford continue. Our 2 primary challenges
are to continue the smooth running of the Charity BUT to find a new site from vthich we may
operate in the future.
