Please read before the meeting .** _**see back page**_ 1 ## **Rector’s Report** Our Dwelling in the Word passage for 2022 was Romans 12: v1 - 13 a passage of scripture rich in clear and inspiring instructions on how to live differently as followers of the Lord Jesus Christ. I think for me the verses that encapsulate the whole passage for us in Hardington Vale are _‘Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.’_ Romans 12 v 4 & 5 _._ We each as individuals, bring different life experiences and gifts to ‘being church’ together in our communities. Yet because we have the common bond of knowing, loving and serving Jesus we come together and are transformed by God and His Holy Spirit into a functioning body of believers. Things to celebrate and thank God for over 2022 include: **Services** A return to ‘normal’ service patterns. This is delivered by a great team that I am privileged to be part of here in the parish which includes Revd Jo Robinson our Curate, Barbara Day, Michael Harrison and Fergus Stewart our Lay Readers and Revd Stephen Kivett **PTO** who helps with preaching and leading eucharist services. We are all ably supported by Ros Clarke carrying out all the parish admin. We have seen a steady growth in Breakfast Church attendance and have incorporated Mini Breakfast Church back into the main Breakfast Church which takes place on the first Sunday of the month at Norton St Philip. This is proving a good space to invite wedding couples with their children to come along to. This year we looked at the Beatitudes and used the Pilgrim book to help resource this. **Partnership For Missional Church PMC:** The spiritual discipline of Dwelling in the Word continues to be a bedrock that we use in many of our meetings. We are grateful to Susie Filkins helping us to keep this focus. **Hardington Vale community response to Ukrainian Guests:** It has been a privilege and blessing to respond as a whole community to the offering of hospitality to Ukrainians who have come to the UK. Working together with people of peace in our communities the villages of Hardington Vale benefice and Beckington have welcomed and hosted over 84 men, women and children from Ukraine. They have blessed us in return - hosting a meal both at NSP and Rode to share Ukrainian food and to raise money for their English lessons. A big thank you to Andraea Dawson-Shepherd, Mary Morrison and Ali Smith for heading this up. **Homegroups:** Our Homegroups continue to grow and flourish. These groups are led by Fergus & Rachel Stewart, Michael Walker & Anne Harkness, Peter Yarker and Beth Harrison & Barbara Day. What is exciting and positive about our Homegroups is that they welcome Christians in the villages who do not necessarily worship with us but who have a heart for fellowshipping together and praying for the people in the communities of which we are all part. **Curate:** Jo Robinson continues to play a full part in services and other activities across the whole parish. Forget- Me-Not cafe which Jo and her team established as we came out of Covid, continues to welcome people who have dementia and their carers and has a small but loyal following. **Prayer:** Prayer is the central bedrock to all we do in parish life. In September we started Parish Prayers as a monthly prayer time for the whole parish meeting on a Monday evening of the first Monday in the month. **Children and Family Worker:** Sue Rodford stepped down from her involvement with the schools and preschool at the end of the Summer term. She continued to lead Tots and Toys for the Autumn team retiring completely at Christmas. Her final service, a Christingle service, was extremely well attended by folk representing all the groups she has been involved with over her five years with us. It was a wonderful celebration and a reflection of how many people’s lives Sue has enriched over her time with us and with her work as our Children and Family worker. 2 **Using our buildings for Mission:** The re-ordering of St Philip and St James Norton St Philip has given us a building with great flexible space in the heart of the community. The building is now being widely used for lunchtime concerts, Tots and Toys, Parish Council meetings and even for the holding of receptions for weddings. **PCC Away Day in November:** Arising from our PCC Away Day in Nov a few key areas to work on in 2023 were highlighted, these were; Prayer, Fun, Prayer ministry, Telling our stories **(testSimony** ) and being open to the Holy Spirit in our lives. We intend to use these to give shape to how we teach and grow as the body of Christ in the coming year. _Caroline,_ Rector ## **Curate’s Report** This year I’ve experienced a more normal church life which has been great! Apart from church services these are some of the things I have been involved in: Alpha – supported by David Mayell and Pete Stratford we held an Alpha course in my home in the first few months of the year. It was encouraging to see people grow in their understanding of God and faith. Ukrainian response – I was involved in hosting for a short time and it was great to be part of an amazing community response. Forget me not Café – this is primarily for people living with dementia and their carers. We have a great café team and the café is attended by people from a wider area than just our parish. School – I am involved in leading assemblies in school and it’s been great when the children have come to church for a special festival assembly or to learn about the meaning of baptism. Training – I have had three opportunities to go on placements this year in two other Benefices and also at Dorothy House Hospice. I have also regularly been off to Flourish House (the Bath and Wells head office) for training sessions. Finally, a big thank you to all of you – for your encouragement and support and especially to Caroline for her continued commitment to my training. ## _**Jo Robinson,**_ **Curate** ## **Electoral Roll Report** From the 159 names on the electoral roll as reported in 2022 there have been the following additions during the year: Martin and Susan Cragg, Stuart and Sofia Perkins, Helen and Neal Shorten, Alan and Patricia Batcheldor and Anthony Powell. Deletions include Rose and Bill Fernie, Jean Horler and Julia Naismith. There are currently 164 names on the electoral roll. _Ros Clarke_ , Electoral Roll Officer ## **PCC Report** This report relates to the April 22 to March 23 year. The PCC met in person four times. The Standing Committee met on eight occasions, once in person but otherwise by email. They dealt with matters that otherwise would have a lengthy wait until the full PCC met. ## **Administrative information:** 3 - The Parish of Hardington Vale in the Diocese of Bath & Wells includes the Churches of St Leonard (Farleigh Hungerford); St Mary’s (Laverton); St Philip & St James (Norton St Philip); St Lawrence (Rode); and All Saints (Tellisford). Brenda Graham| |---|---| ## **Structure, governance & management** The method of appointment of PCC members is set out in the Church Representation Rules. All Church attendees are encouraged to register on the Electoral Roll and stand for election. ## **Objectives and activities** The PCC has the responsibility of co-operating with the incumbent in promoting the mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical throughout the Parish as well as the responsibility of the maintenance of the churches of the Parish. In 2022/23 the PCC met on four occasions. Average attendance was 18 of a possible 25 with a minimum of 16. The standing committee met on eight occasions to expedite these matters. - May 28 email Appointment of Fergus Stewart as Reader June 11 email Faculty for repairs to the organ at St Mary’s Laverton July 31 email Repairs to projector 4 Oct 5 in person Rode roof, appointment of architect, boiler NSP and Hemington issues Dec 5-7 email Repairs to the organ at St Mary’s Laverton Dec 7 email To approve parish share Dec 14-17 email Laverton Defibrillator Dec 17-19 email Work on the roof of St Lawrence Rode At each meeting, the PCC received written reports from the Rector and from the Children’s and family worker. The PCC received an update at each of their meeting of progress with Partners in Mission Church (PMC). Their content is not reported here but summarised in their annual reports. The meeting on April **25** was held in NSP church with 19 of a possible 25 attending. Susie Filkins led the PCC in “Dwelling in the Word” using Romans 12 The PCC agreed to these appointments. The PCC discussed and agreed revisions to the service pattern during lock down and Christmas. The PCC discussed arrangement for maintenance of the churchyard at St Mary’s Hemington, and approved the installation of a water meter at St Lawrence Rode. Andrew Morrison gave an update of his progress since being appointed to the Health & safety role. At its meeting on **21 July, 18** of a possible 25 attended. The PCC discussed the community response to the hosting of Ukrainian visitors. The retirement of Sue Rodford and options for the continued employment of someone in the role were discussed. A discussion was had on returning to the use of a common chalice. The matter was deferred until the PCC meeting in October. Bell tower captains were appointed for Rode (Geoff Banwell) and Farleigh Hungerford (Sandy Wheeler). A policy and procedure on Lone Working was approved. Geoff Banwell presented a report on the half year accounts. Andrew Morrison reported on the role of the Deanery Mission and Pastoral Group. DMPG. Portable Appliance Testing was completed and thanks expressed to Bob Hill for once again carry out this work. At its meeting on **17 October, 1** 7 of a possible 25 attended. **Fergus Stewart** presented a paper and led a discussion on options for the continued work with Families and Children. 5 Given the then current levels of Covid infection, it was agreed to continue with present practice and delay returning to the use of a common chalice. Geoff Banwell presented his finance report and expressed his concerns about potential increases in the cost of parish share, electricity and the cost of living impact in general. Geoff Banwell spoke on his written report on the St Lawrence roof renovation. Grave wobble tests have been made in all churchyards except Tellisford. A small working group are working their way through any necessary repairs. The PCC appointed new architects for each church following the retirement of John Beauchamp. A recommendation was received to disconnect the gas boiler to the radiators in NSP church. . Whilst this would save money, concerns were raised that it might be better to wait until later in the heating season to establish how effective the infra-red heaters are performing. The PCC agreed to adopt Asha-India as our overseas charity for the next three years. At its meeting on **9 March** , 17 of a possible 25 attended Lydia Chancellor attended the meeting for this item and gave an encouraging progress report on her young people and children’s project. A new passage for Dwelling in the word was agreed. Philippians 4:4-13 The rector reported that Bishop Michael was to visit the parish on Sunday 10 Sept and again on Monday for meetings with the leadership team and the PCC. The rector gave a written report and talked about forthcoming deanery events and issues. The meeting was delighted to hear Jo Robinson had now completed her formal training. The PCC noted that following communications from the Bishop, the parish had returned to using a common chalice. Rachel Stewart gave a written report on safeguarding and the meeting approved the Safeguarding action plan level 2. The draft accounts for the year to 31 December 2022 were presented to the meeting by Geoff Banwell. The PCC noted the areas of change in finance and, subject to review, approved the account unanimously. The meeting approved work to the chancel roof at St Lawrence and a programme of work to deal with minor matters raised in the quinquennial. The Rector outlined potential changes in the deanery set up as the deanery team is reduced from 7 to 6. _**Tony Day**_ **Secretary Hardington Vale PCC** ## **Home Groups** Our Homegroups continue to grow and flourish. These groups are led by Fergus and Rachel Stewart, Michael Walker and Anne Harkness, Peter Yarker and Beth Harrison and Barbara Day. The exciting and positive thing about our Homegroups is that they welcome Christians in the villages who do not necessarily worship with us but who have a heart for fellowshipping together and praying for the people in the communities of which we are all part. Fergus and Rachel’s group and Michael and Beth’s group both meet once a fortnight on a Tuesday evening. They have been studying The Difference course and the books of Revelation and Ruth respectively. Peter and Robin’s group meets on a Tuesday afternoon and has been studying the book of Ephesians. Beth and Barbara’s group meets on alternate Wednesday evenings and use Ignatian prayer and have been working with the book ‘The Cave Refectory Road.’ If you are interested in joining one of these please do contact Caroline **carolinehwalker@btnternet.com** 01373 834258. 6 ## **School Report** ## **RODE AND NORTON ST. PHILIP FIRST SCHOOL FEDERATION** ## **OUTSTANDING!** We had a very busy end of the Autumn t term in our two schools which was topped off by a surprise December visit from Ofsted. What a treat! They were inspecting the Norton St. Philip school children since last visiting in 2017. Achieving an ‘outstanding’ under the new 2019 Ofsted Framework is very rare so we were ‘Outstanding’ for children’s personal extremely pleased to be graded development and ‘good’ in all other areas. In the report the inspectors noted that we are a ‘ _welcoming, caring school. The school’s ethos, ‘Small Schools, Thinking Big’, comes alive here. Leaders provide an exciting rich curriculum… Pupils love showcasing their talents when they perform in theatre productions… Pupils are wonderful ambassadors for the school. Parents typically comment that ‘children are encouraged to flourish and grow’. Pastoral support for pupils is strong. Staff care deeply about pupils and forge supportive relationships with them…Leaders have designed a rich, wellsequenced curriculum…Leaders inspire pupils to develop a love of reading…The curriculum for pupils’ personal development is exceptional.”_ We waved the inspectors farewell at 5pm on the second day of the inspection and then rushed over to St. James Church, ready for our **Christmas Nativity Concert** at 6pm. The following week, the older children took centre stage in the church singing carols and performing the winning entries in our ‘ **Song for Christmas’** competition. The winning song ‘Crazy Christmas’, by Mostyn, featured Zak on drums and his dad Simon on guitar. Twelve lucky children have been enjoying guitar lessons with our new teacher Danny Green so hopefully we will have our own guitarist in the future! Our focus on music, drama, dance, art and film has led to us being awarded the very prestigious ‘ **Gold Artsmark Award’** for both our schools from the Arts Council. In November. We recently displayed a piece of artwork in the **44AD Artspace gallery** in Bath as part of the ‘ **Heroes of the Commonwealth’** exhibition. Every child in school contributed to the piece which was then put together by our Art Lead Natalie Duncan. Children were very proud to visit the gallery and see their exhibit. We ended the term with an explosive **Science Fair** . The older children set up tests and experiments for the younger children and parents to try including slime-making, magnetic Santa, colour-changing liquids and stepping through a piece of A4 paper! Early figures indicate that our Reception class is oversubscribed for September 2023 so as we start the new year, we have lots to celebrate in our federation! www.rodeandnortonschoolfederation.co.uk Or call us on 01373 830523 or 01373 834327. **COME AND JOIN THE ADVENTURE!** 7 ## **Church Wardens’ Reports** ## **St. Leonard’s Church, Farleigh Hungerford** A very positive year at St. Leonard’s. There have been good attendances at the monthly services, which alternate between Communion and Matins. Four weddings were celebrated at the Church during the year and a successful Carol Service was held on 18[th] December. Terry Mackechnie has retired as Captain of Bells after many years’ service and been replaced by Sandy Wheeler. Robert Toal has been appointed Church Architect to succeed John Beauchamp. The Church remains in good condition with a planned ongoing schedule of maintenance to include painting and masonry repairs. The major improvement in the amenity of the Church during the year, has been the installation of an electric under pew heating system to replace the aged boiler, which had become inoperable and unsafe. An improvement completely funded by the Friends of St Leonard’s. Terrier and log book are correct. No assets were acquired or disposed of during the year. The maintenance of the Church and of the churchyard including grass cutting and the punctilious weeding of the gravel paths has been funded and achieved by the Friends of St. Leonard’s to whom thanks are due once again. I would like to express particular gratitude to Mike Smith, Sallie Neill, John Davidson, Rex Eastment, Claire Covill and Deborah and Robin Allen for their enthusiasm and hard work throughout the year and the contribution they have made to fostering the life and worship in the Church and its maintenance . All are grateful for the flowers that decorate the Church provided by Deborah Allen , Dilys MacKechnie and Catriona Murfitt. ## _**Guy Hungerford,**_ **Chapel Warden** ## **St Mary’s, Laverton** ## **Introduction** The pattern of church services continued, with Holy Communion on the first Sunday of each month and lay-led services on the next 3 Sundays. The pattern was adjusted for Easter and for Christmas when a near record number of 59 people attended the carol service. After the extensive amount of work completed last year, only 3 items remain outstanding from the 2019 QIR. Repairs to internal wall memorials are deemed too expensive for little benefit and will not be done. The collapsed wall at the northeast corner of the churchyard is no hazard and repair is being deferred to the next quinquennium. ## **Church Heating** After the routine periodic inspection, the Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) deemed the electric church heating system installed in the 1960s to be Unsatisfactory. An electric system with convectors under the pews was chosen as the replacement. A Faculty was duly requested and approved for the “Removal and disposal of oil-filled tube electric heating system installed throughout nave and chancel. Installation of fixed under pew heating by Electric Heating Solutions (UK) Ltd” The work was undertaken and completed on 11 July 2022. With the arrival of winter, the system was found to be highly effective and a great deal cheaper than the system it replaced. ## **Defibrillator** 8 Free of any charge or cost, a defibrillator has been provided and fitted in the porch of St Mary's Church Laverton by the Friends of Frome Hospital who identified the church porch as the most (and possibly the only) suitable location in Laverton. [note: The Faculty Jurisdiction (Amendment) Rules 2019, Table 2 List B includes "the introduction of a defibrillator in a church which is a listed building"] The Archdeacon’s List B approval was received on 20 January 2023 ## **Chamber Organ** In March 2022, during routine tuning, inside the organ Brian Hooper found a large mouse nest (complete with J-cloth!). For full repair and refurbishment, some parts needed to be taken to the workshop, so a Faculty was required. The process for requesting a Faculty proceeded smoothly until the full DAC meeting, at which the organ specialist did not recommend approval, saying that more detail was required. It was agreed that world-renowned organ specialist Dominic Gwynn should be asked to inspect and advise. He came to inspect the organ on 10 October 2022 and sent his report a few days later. His recommendations were included in a second submission for a Faculty “To clean, repair and adjust the 19[th] century chamber organ” which proceeded smoothly and was received on 9 January 2023. Meanwhile, organ builder Brian Hooper had received more orders and work on Laverton’s chamber organ will not start until the end of April 2023, a full year later than the initial submission for a Faculty. ## **Documentation** Terrier, inventory and logbook have been reviewed. All is present and correct. Throughout the year very large amount of time was spent acquiring Faculties and List B approvals. The assistance of Chris Cloke, the Hardington Vale churchwarden, has been invaluable is greatly appreciated. ## **Julia Naismith** Julia died on 26 October 2022. As a regular member of the small congregation for over 40 years, even after she moved to Frome, and as one of the takers of lay-led services she is very greatly missed. ## _**Sir Robert Hill,**_ **Chapel Warden** ## **St Philip & St James, Norton St Philip** We are very pleased that our services have been able to proceed as normal over the last year. On the first Sunday of the month, Breakfast Church has been well supported and we are grateful to the volunteers who prepare the delicious breakfasts. We have two Holy Communion Services a month and one informal, usually lay-led, service of praise and worship. Thanks to the creation of the flexible space in our building, there are many activities which have been regularly held in the church: Once a month, on the third Monday afternoon we have continued to host a Forget-Me-Not Café - a time when dementia sufferers and their carers can get together and have a chat with our dementia-friendly helpers. Also once a month from April, usually on the first Thursday, we have held Lunchtime Concerts featuring local musicians providing a wide 9 variety of music including jazz, classical and vocal. Nick Sorensen has been instrumental in organising, and often performing in, these popular concerts. A few evening events have also been held, including a concert by The Lee Ingram Quintet in March, a Hymns & Pimm’s evening in July, an evening with Hungrytown an American folk duo, in October and a concert of Christmas music by the Mendip Male Voice Choir in December. Profits from the concerts go towards funding future events and also towards the upkeep of the church building. Every week, on Wednesday mornings, Tots & Toys happened in the church. A chance for parents, grandparents, carers and pre-school children to get together and chat or play and enjoy cake. And during the summer holidays, a Caterpillar Club took place. During the last year, the church has also been used for regular Ukrainian English Lessons; yoga meditation services; the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, including cream teas and a memorable dance with a band comprising local musicians, hastily arranged when torrential rain prevented it from happening on the Mead; an exhibition venue for Norton St Philip Artists Together; a Christmas wreath making workshop; a Christmas Bazaar; Parish Council meetings, wedding receptions and wedding anniversary celebrations. The increased use of the church has necessitated a regular cleaning regime and we are fortunate that since August, we have been able to employ two Ukrainian ladies who do splendid work keeping the church clean. If there are two words which can instill a feeling of foreboding in a churchwarden, it is the ‘Quinquennial Inspection’. We are extremely fortunate in having the services of Michael Walker who has undertaken many of the items of work listed in our last QI, including repointing work, renovation of the rainwater goods and, not least, the cleaning and repainting of the end plates of the Tower braces. We will have a new QI this year which will be conducted by our new architect, Emma Green. We hope that minimal work will be required over the next five years. Attention has also been paid to the many tombstones in the churchyard which were at risk of falling over. Our buildings warden, Chris Cloke checked all the headstones and made them safe. Maintenance of the churchyard is a constant task and we are grateful to the volunteers who, under the guidance of Duncan Barley, form a working party twice a year to keep the vegetation under control. We are also grateful to the Parish Council for funding the mowing of the churchyard during 2022. It has been a pleasure to hear the bells being rung more frequently and we are grateful to the ringers who now practise regularly. Our thanks also go to the clock winders, the people who lock and unlock the church and the flower group who create wonderful flower arrangements for weddings, festivals and funerals. The Terrier has been checked and all items are present and correct. **Church warden,** _**Muriel Duckett**_ 10 ## **St Lawrence, Rode** ## **Services** It is good to be able to report that our services have returned to normal some three years after the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted all our lives. We have Holy Communion on the first and third Sundays in the month, Breakfast church on the second Sunday and Informal worship on the fourth Sunday. We are always delighted to welcome our friends from other parts of the parish to any of these services. Our grateful thanks go to all those who provide the delicious breakfasts on the second Sundays as well as the refreshments at the other services. ## **The Church Building** As reported previously, the major item on the agenda is the re-covering of the roof. We knew from the 2017 Quinquennial inspection (QI) that six of the ten roof slopes needed to be dealt with at that time. The 2022 QI has confirmed that the whole roof, including the porch, should now be dealt with. Our Architect has drawn up a detailed specification and the first phase, the chancel roof, has been put out to tender at the time of writing. The necessary faculty has been applied for. In 2017 it was very difficult to see how this was going to be funded, until we were contacted by the trustees of the Richard Oatley Foundation. They have very kindly pledged to contribute £300,000 to this project, but that still leaves £100,000 to be found based on a current best estimate of £400,000 for the total cost. A major appeal has been launched by letters to every house in Rode. These are currently being delivered. Grants are also being sought. We are enormously grateful to the trustees of the Richard Oatley Foundation for their support. It is amazing good fortune that they have come along at our time of greatest need. Apart from the roof, there are a number of much less significant items mentioned in the QI that require attention. We will be gradually working through these. We also had a five yearly electrical inspection in 2022. The electrical installation was assessed as being satisfactory for continued use. Some observations about possible improvements are under consideration. ## **The Churchyard** The Churchyard has been regularly mown and kept in good order. The southern wall requires some attention and the work to repair it has been put in hand. We are grateful to Rode Parish Council for the annual grant they provide towards the cost of maintenance. ## **Terrier and Log Book** The Terrier and Log Book are up to date. During the year the new radio microphones and the associated receiver were kindly donated by John Flindall. ## **Fund Raising** Apart from regular and other donations, funds to pay for maintenance and insurance of St Lawrence are raised by the Heart of Rode committee. During the year the money raised by the committee was as follows: Murder Mystery £727, Rode Roxy (4) £608, Tombola on Village Day £428, History Afternoon £178 and Harvest Supper £251 making a total of £2,192. ## **Occasional Ofces** During the year there were no baptisms, one marriage and two funerals in church. _**Geoff Banwell and Sally Pickett,**_ **Churchwardens** 11 ## **All Saints Tellisford** Our village’s Church of All Saints is a Chapel of Ease (since June 2017); each year the congregation and the Fabric Committee elect a Chapel Warden (currently Rachel Feilden), and the Deputy Warden is Helen Curwen. The regular pattern of services is lay-led Matins at 9am on the second Sunday of the month, Holy Communion at 9am on the fourth Sunday, and Evening Prayer every Tuesday fortnight, held at 6pm until November when it moved to 5pm for the foreseeable future. The full pattern of services had restarted in June 2021, but fresh waves of the continuing pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and its variants meant that Nativity Poems for 2021 had been held in the churchyard, and throughout 2022 we used individual glass cups for communion wine. Our church is open to visitors during daylight hours throughout the year. The team of seven flower arrangers kept the church looking fresh and welcoming, and the Visitors’ Book records 87 names with their comments on the peace and beauty of the place. But we know that many more visitors come to our church, which has a footpath through the churchyard. The churchyard plan is up to date. The Fabric Committee’s improved mowing pattern (fortnightly mow including paths connecting to the footpath; late summer mow of longer growth) has a lighter ecological impact by using less petrol and allowing the native plants to flower and set seeds, providing a healthier environment for insects and other wildlife. The electrical appliances were PAT-tested on 13[th] May 2022 on a schedule in accordance with Health and Safety Regulations. Fire extinguishers were inspected on schedule in June, and the organ was tuned in November. We have inspected the Terrier, and all church goods and chattels therein are in place. Caroline Whitehead rehearsed and conducted a choir of willing volunteers from around the parish for last Easter and the Christmas carol service. We are also fortunate enough to have Nick Sorensen in our community who has composed pieces for our church choir (led by Caroline Whitehead with Ros Clarke accompanying on the piano) to sing in specific services.
