Albion URC Book of Reports 2022/23
The Elders have put together this book of reports ahead of our AGM on 12[th] March 2023. It shows just some of the work going on in our Albion community. This will be added to following the meeting.
Church Secretary’s Report
I would like to begin my annual report for 2022/23 by thanking everyone who has contributed to Albion during the past year. Our small band of members and other volunteers have once again successfully managed to keep a large church with so many activities functioning efficiently.
As the world has faced another turbulent year, with the cost of living crisis affecting everyone, the financial pressures upon us have been great. However we have still been busy in so many aspects of church life, welcoming people to a wide range of services and events. We had over 1,100 people through our doors during the Christmas period alone. This would not be possible without our dedicated team and despite the financial difficulties, we have also continued to support charities.
Sadly we lost our friends Dorothy Broadhurst and Chas Hanvy who passed away this year. We are grateful for their contributions to Albion over the years and their families remain in our thoughts and prayers.
We currently have a membership of 25 at Albion.
We have myself as Secretary, Gillian as Treasurer and five serving Elders Joe Aspin, Ann Hewson and John Scott, who are due to serve for this coming year with another two Elders voted in and confirmed at the church AGM. Thanks go to Roman Bojczuk who is taking a well-earned sabbatical after his contributions as a serving Elder.
Whilst aware of the challenges we are facing, we go forward into this year with great hope. We have exciting plans to further the mission of Albion Church and develop the building to be able to cater for more events and activities, a vision supported by the North West Synod.
Despite our small numbers, we are a strong church family who help and support each other and everyone has a part to play. The wonderful refreshments provided after Sunday morning worship have meant more
and more people are staying for a time of fellowship and this provides a good opportunity to get to know each other better.
We have just opened a new Tots Group and have plenty of other activities lined up for this year and we always welcome anyone who is willing and able to contribute more to the work of Albion in spiritual, pastoral and practical terms.
As we continue to do God’s work and move into sometimes uncertain territory, we know that in the Lord we have an ever-present source of strength, love and energy to keep us going, no matter how difficult times may be.

but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not be faint.

Treasurer’s Report
Our fund raising events seem to have recovered from the effects of covid. More people have returned to the community events supporting us in person and financially. On the 17[th] June 2023 we are planning a Garden Party, this is in addition to the two craft fairs, heritage day, and our monthly coffee mornings. I am looking for a small team to help plan the garden party. Can you help?
Our building is in use Monday to Thursday evenings by various community groups. The groups have supported us by performing in concerts, opening the fair, and attending events. Tots at Albion has reopened and we look forward to another community of people joining in our church family.
The “cost of living crisis” is certainly having an effect on our church finances. The gas and electricity prices have increased dramatically. I have studied our electricity bills and we have changed a few things to reduce the usage. In January 22 the price per kWh was 15.457p and from November 22 we pay 23.842p with government help. The monthly standing charges have increased from 81p per day to 755p per day. We pay a maximum capacity charge which also has increased from £203 per month to £571. I am working to get this maximum capacity reduced. It is similar with the gas prices, increasing from 3.097p/kWh to 16.6635p in August 22. Government help reduces it to 8.332p. Standing charges are minimal for this gas contract. I have made an enquiry about solar panels but don’t know if we will get permission to fit them.
I want to thank everyone for your commitment to continuing to support Albion Church in your financial giving. Gift Aid does make a big difference increasing every £1 donated by 25p. Please complete a gift aid form if you are a tax payer.

Report from Revd. Graham Tarn
Some much has happened over the last year but some very important factors are unchanging.
The most obvious two are the care and support offered by members of the fellowship to…. pretty much one and all. It does tend to be, but not restricted to, those of the fellowship. Different groups looking out for each other and attending Elders’ meetings, I learn little bits about the fellowship.
The second is the support and opportunities offered to the community. Numerous funerals, concerts, fairs and I am sure I overlooking many other events. Getting the clock repaired for those who rely on it. Special services toward the end of the year for the bereaved and of course the Christingle and Christmas Eve carol services. I was able to attend the latter unexpectedly, and everyone made it a joyful occasion. My first experience of a carol service at that time of night.
Back tracking a little bit, I am still getting to grips with the fellowship, relying on the Elders mainly, to point me in the right direction. The committee meetings that I’ve managed to attend have also been informative – many ideas and considerable thought given to mission or/and building upkeep. Some of those ideas begin to work their way through and one at least was discussed at a Church meeting. The decision wasn’t to everyone’s liking but that is how we, the United Reformed Church, discern the will of God.
I’m not certain when the monthly coffee mornings were re-launched. But it is another of those outreach, as well as fellowship building, opportunities offered by Albion. And the smell of bacon after Sunday morning worship – really appealing. Hopefully, as the weather improves and the concerns about COVID reduce (a bit further) more folk will share in food and fellowship after the service.
At the start of the year there were three ‘Café Style / Soul Café’ services. They held in the Memorial Chapel accompanied by the piano rather than the organ. Several people commented how different and refreshing they were. A similar comment was made by a couple who were present for a ‘marriage’ meeting – they might have just been polite or, because it was more engaging and nothing was forced on them, truthful. However, I then went on the main segment of my sabbatical and on my return learned of a serious criticism so I’ve so I’ve backed off that idea while still believing it is a very good way forward to get people a little less reticent about discussing matters or aspects of faith.
Earlier this year, I was invited by the Women’s Circle to say something about my experience of actually walking ‘The Camino de Santiago’ (St. Jame’s Way). It was a privilege. It ran rather long, my fault for including too much but also the questions and encouragement (another form of support) from the Circle made it impossible to stop.
There are ideas under consideration about how the building might be configured differently to enable more or different activities. I understand some of the ideas have been mulled over for a little while and our Mission Mentor, Lawrence Heath-Moore is lending a hand. The Missional Partnership continues to seek to find the best way of utilising my skill set and that of Ruth – along with the active retired and Self Supporting ministers. While it isn’t early days now, it remains very much a work in progress, hoping, expecting and enabling the local fellowships – with their wider partners – to see and support what’s going to help grow the kingdom and proclaim the Good News. While I could not attend the ‘Unlocking Abundance’ away day in early February, the feed back has been encouraging. Thinking ‘outside of the box’ and ‘daring to dream’ along with a number of practicalities. One of which is realising how liberating our structures can be – especially if we realise and respond to God’s call.
There were celebrations with Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee (June 22), and a very noticeable feeling of loss when she died with her funeral in September. Such a long, dedicated life of service. And we look forward fairly soon now to the Coronation of King Charles III. Some view it as tradition and not really relevant, some wish to abolish the monarchy, some wonder how it will survive. I have no axe to grind here – other than to say, I understand that Her Majesty instilled her Christian faith, by word, deed and example, in her son. He is facing a number of difficulties with his family – let us pray and offer the support and encouragement we all experience at Albion to His Majesty.
The REAL unchanging factor is God’s love for us all in Jesus. And a follow through on that is, how do we live our experience of that and obey Jesus’ “new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you should also love one another. By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34-5) Graham
URC 50[th] Anniversary Celebrations
Albion Celebrated the 50[th] Anniversary of the URC in June with an Afternoon Tea and dedication of a tree planted to commemorate the occasion. The tree is now full of buds, a sign of new life as Spring approaches.
Baptisms
We have had 11 Baptisms since our last report, with 3 confirmed so far for later in 2023.
Also 2 children from one family awaiting attendance at a Sunday service and a further 4 on the waiting list.
It is a pleasure to welcome these families & their young children into God’s fellowship, as we continue to reach out into the wider community. We are grateful to our Ministers & Lay Preachers, who kindly agree to carry out these Baptisms.
Weddings
Five weddings & one blessing are booked & confirmed so far for 2023. Ministers are in place for each of the weddings, but we are awaiting confirmation for the Blessing. Several more enquiries are in the pipeline and three weddings are booked for 2024.
I also have enquiries for 2025 & 2026 ongoing!
Due to escalating costs, the price of weddings has been increased from 1st February to £595.
As always, I would like to express my thanks to the Ministers, Organists & Registrars, who willingly officiate at these weddings. Thanks too, to our wonderful caretakers for always being available to open the Church, as necessary.

The Circle
The Circle meets the second Thursday of the month usually at 1.30pm at Albion. Since September we have had speakers, Jean, Val Williams and Graham. We have visited Portland Basin, had our Christmas meal at Smokies, had a Beetle Drive and an afternoon of musical entertainment from Derek. Our next meeting is Thursday 13[th] April where we will be having a Bring and Share Lunch at XX to celebrate the Circle’s Anniversary. Everyone welcome.

Highlights. from last year
The flat roof was repaired and two chimneys repointed a cost of just under £10.000. The Church Clock was repaired at just under £3000.
Moving in to late 2022 / 2023. A new fridge freezer was needed for our kitchen due to our expansion on serving food for Sunday and our coffee mornings.
In September 2022 we had three new toilets, two in the main part of church and one for “the ministers” near the Memorial Chapel. .In the main toilets we had both cubicles fitted with hand dryers and one has an over head heater. We also had a baby changing facility fitted in the larger cubicle- the disabled one. This was needed due to the events that we are holding etc. All three toilets were fitted with wet wall panelling boards and anti slip floors. Just over £ 9000 money well spent in my opinion..
Our alarm panel broke which was replaced under contract. A keypad containing a fob is now in place to set the alarm.
The building is undergoing a 5 yearly quinquennial inspection at the moment! This should have started in April 22 but was delayed by the inspectors struggling to find time to do it. We are waiting an outcome on this and pray there’s not to much work that needs doing….
Our five year electrical safety test is also going to be started on the church soon, estimated at around £1998.00 ouch..
As many people know our electric prices have shot up astronomical 1 bill, £2500 for one month and December's bill just under £3000 this is high! and very frightening for the church !!!
Our church needs as much help for events and other thing that we do . So please think about it now you have read this? It's in our hands to keep the church open, any ideas on what we could do with help to raise money let us know- my self Gillian or David ..
The mums and tots group started on the 28th of February .. if you know any one interested please let me know and we can accommodate them. The stairs and the primary have had a clean up to allow them to be used for Tots at Albion as it expands.

Korah Selah .- Monday Night Music Group
Glory Hallelujah Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth. Break forth in song ,rejoice and sing praises taken from verse 4 of Psalm 98. Semi circle the name is no more we have changed to . Korah Selah The line up of our group has changed from a majority membership from Albion Church to fifty-fifty none members. We no longer felt connected closely with the Albion Circle group so we sought a new name to reflect who we now are and where we are directed by The Lord to go .We searched scripture for inspiration.
Psalm 143 Hear my prayer O Lord. Give ear to my supplication .In your faithfulness answer me…. And he did
In The Book of Psalms in Book Two we have mention of the sons of Korah musicians. An explanation of the appointed singers given in 2 Chronicles 20 verses 19 -22 all biblical.
Also in the Korah musicians psalms we find the word Selah .

Three wooden crosses (new very challenging songs of tempo & content) Which may be more appropriate for a Gospel night outside of church. Oh yes that's something else that Korah Selah are working on. As we are fifty-fifty in the group we are looking at presenting Gospel music outside of Church settings.
This has revealed some hidden talents which The good Lord is providing for us. Watch out for our version of the Gospel song
Will the Circle be unbroken. (no connection at all with semi circle just coincidence in the name. ) This is a development which Korah Selah hope you all will be blessed with .
We are on the cusp of exciting times ahead . May you all be blessed . Selah .
Girlguiding Albion
In September 2022 we celebrated 100 years of Guiding at Albion. We had over sixty past members attend an afternoon tea. Current Albion Guiding families have connections over 2,3 or 4 generations. We opened a time capsule made in 1999 where Eileen Gregson had written about her experiences in war time Guiding. Janet, Eileen’s daughter is still Guiding at Albion as a leader. The girls in the family have all achieved high awards. The youngest in the “Gregson” family Olivia gained the Rainbow Gold Award last year and has recently joined Brownies. Olivia made us proud at the Ashton Division Standard Service when she led the congregation by reading the Brownie Law and making the Promise – she was making her Brownie Promise for the first time.
Our leadership team has expanded, Paula has joined Suzanne, Janet and Jaimie at Rainbows, Kim has joined the Guide team and Briony Brownies. Zoe, Natasha, Katie and Gillian cover Brownies, Guides and Rangers. Wednesday night is always busy, noisy and full of chatter! Last year both Brownies and Guides went to Seven Springs, Disley for a weekend. This year Guides are going to “Wellies and Wristbands”, a festival weekend, camping at Clitheroe. Jaimie and Kaycee, two of our Rangers/ young Leaders are going on “Euro-Hop” in August visiting four countries in a few days and Katie (Young Leader at Brownies) has been selected to go to Japan with Girlguiding.
The Brownies recently performed “Room on the Broom” and gained the Performing Badge.
Rainbows are 4 ½ to 7 and meet 6pm to 7pm Brownies are 7 to 10 years and meet 6pm to 7.15pm
Guides are 10 to 14 years, Rangers 14-18 years and meet 7.20 to 8.35 We meet at church each Wednesday during term time.
Tots at Albion
Tots at Albion has had a fantastic start. This coming Tuesday (March 14th) will be our third session since commencing and we are holding a Mothers Day themed session - plenty of arts and crafts for the tots. Each Tuesday between 10am - 11.30am we have a different theme to make it exciting for the children and we include messy play, arts and crafts, motor skills play, snack and juice time, a nursery rhyme and sing-along to finish the session and much more -alternating the activities on a 3 weekly basis. We have planned 2 weeks of Easter activities including an egg hunt, card making and lots of messy play which will be fantastic. We plan to display the Easter art the children make in church ready for the Easter service and invite the families to attend the service to see their wonderful work.
We have had a great response from the local community. Following the first session on February 28th we had wonderful comments and most importantly, full support from the tots and their families/caregivers. Each attendee came the following week and word quickly spread regarding tots, bringing new tots the following week. We have set up a private Facebook group for the parents/caregivers (we asked the adults to sign consent forms giving permission to share photos and videos within the group) which again has had an excellent first couple of weeks. We are very happy with how Tots at Albion has gone so far and we are very, very excited about what we have planned going forward. The children always leave with a big smile and each week we receive photos of the children napping as they get home (success!). Rach and I have had the help, support and guidance we need from Gillian to set the tots group up in which we are grateful, also the help of Joe, Carol and Rachel on a weekly basis giving the children and families the same, friendly faces each session.
I will end by asking if anybody has any ideas on how we can further connect the tots group to church in ways of bringing the families to Sunday service or to other planned events then please let us know. The aim is to make the families feel they are part of the church family outside of the tots sessions too and for word of mouth to continue proving successful

Toe Tappers and Tiny Toes Dance School
It is hard to believe that this year we celebrate 18years since that first class at Albion Church
Having danced as a hobby for many years following the death of my teacher I approached the church where I have been a member for 50 years this year to rent a room to start a dance school which offered dance to anyone aged 3 and above
We are affiliated to the American Association of Dance whose
headquarters are at New Mills and teach Tap Ballet modern Mime Acrobatics and Modern Music
An adult class on a Monday has seen many members over the years and is currently taken by a previous dancer who qualified in London but returned home during Covid.
With Myself ( a nurse) Jayanna ( a nursery nurse) Tracey ( employed in a school ) we have been able to offer dance to all especially children with disabilities over the years at a reasonable price for lessons . Tracey and her mum Aileen make our costumes or we buy at a cost from on line companies again making dance affordable for all .
We donate to church monthly and have supported many events to help with the church costs the last being the clock fund and more recently the expense of heating and also donate to children’s charities .
We open the Christmas fair and perform shows locally and attend events with the Association at Blackburn and the winter gardens Blackpool as well as doing exam and medal sessions .
Since covid we have not had the enrolment the same in our younger class Tiny Toes on a Saturday but slowly we are seeing some new members join and many of whom join other activities offered at church especially we hope with the opening of mums and tots again.
We appreciate the use of the church and all it has to offer for our dancers especially the space at the back of the church which is great to practice for the winter gardens being similar in size to the stage, and for the support from our parents and church members .
We celebrate our 18 years with a show in May at Guide Bridge theatre with whom we have developed a friendship with the staff following last years show and helping at events as chaperones for them , It is good to support a local venue again reopening after covid.
We look forward to continuing our classes at Albion and developing young dancers

Do Your Thing Choir
Do Your Thing (DYT) choir was formed in 2011 by MD Liz Taylor. A non-auditioned community choir of people who love to sing and share the joy of music with others.
Rehearsals are held, term time only: Tuesday 8pm-9:30pm at Albion URC Wednesday 8pm-9:30pm at Heaton Mersey Methodist Stockport. Our repertoire covers a wide range, from classic, modern and popular music over the decades, so something for everyone.
Over the years, the choir has performed at various events, from community festivals to grandee theatres and sung live on BBC radio and TV.
During lockdown, our choir video performances raised over £10.000 for NHS charities, the Christie, Mind and support for Afghanistan refugees. A musical Evening of Hope was hosted by DYT in October 22 at Albion. A well supported and wonderful evening, that made such a difference, in many ways, including new connections and friendships, between local people and Ukrainian families.
There are various gigs in the pipeline and the choir is currently rehearsing for a performance at the Bolton Choir Festival on Sat.25th March and also as support act to Jimmy Cricket’s 50years in Show Business at the Plaza in Stockport on Sun. 26th March.
So already a busy start to 2023! Making music together!

Gardening
As the spring weather approaches, we will be thinking once again about maintaining the grounds during the spring and summer. We have been fairly successful in keeping on top of the lawns and hedge and are fortunate to have the tools we need to do so.
However, we do need more volunteers if we are going to tidy and plant out the borders. Whilst we recognise that we are a small and ageing congregation, there are tasks that most people would be able to undertake. We particularly need help from people who know a bit more about suitable plants which may make the gardens more ‘self maintaining’ in future years. The forthcoming ‘garden party’ should be an incentive for us to make the grounds look their best. We can make some money available for the purchase of suitable plants.
Concerts
Last year closed with a wonderful ‘Christmas Concert’ by Jonathan Scott – this was his regular ‘Rochdale Town Hall’ concert brought to Albion due to the refurbish of the town hall. We hope this could be at Albion again this year, as Rochdale Town Hall will still be closed.
Our first concert this year with Gordon Stewart at the organ was a great success, with between 90 and 100 people attending. Three further events are planned for later in the year.
On Sunday 14[th] May at 3.00pm, Hans Uwe Hielscher will make a return visit (he last played at Albion in 2019). Although now retired, he is still very much a part of the musical life of the Marktkirche in Wiesbaden.
On Saturday 2[nd] September at 3.00pm, David Grealy is the organist for a recital organised by Oldham, Rochdale and Tameside Organists’ Association. David is currently organist at Leeds Cathedral.
On Saturday 23[rd] September at 7.30pm we look forward to a return visit of Malcolm Archer (former organist of Bristol Cathedral, Wells Cathedral and St Paul’s Cathedral). Malcolm last played at Albion 5 years ago
Please put these dates in your diaries and endeavour to support these events. The organ at Albion is extremely highly thought of by all of these internationally famous organists and they deserve our support
