Albion URC Book of Reports 2021/22
The Elders have put together this book of reports ahead of our AGM on 10[th] April 2022. It shows just some of the work going on in our Albion community. This will be added to following the meeting.
Thoughts from John S
As I write, the sun is shining, the birds are singing, there are buds on the trees, at last spring has arrived. After two years of what has been a testing and often challenging time for us all, new beginnings and new life are on their way. It is the same within our Christian lives. We are in the season of Lent and Easter will soon be with us, when we contemplate the death and resurrection of our Lord and Master, Jesus Christ. Where we too can experience the re-birth, the renewal of life, both within our material lives and also in our spiritual lives.

Church Secretary’s Report
I would like to begin my annual report for 2021 by thanking everyone who has worked so hard during the past year. Once again we have faced challenges caused by the pandemic and damage to the building. However we have been blessed by our wonderful members who have helped in so many aspects from pastoral care, to practical jobs around the church and also financial support. We have continued to support charities and maintain a Christian presence in the town.
We have continued our regular services and events, as well as welcoming many visitors to baptisms, weddings and funerals
Sadly we lost our friends Doris Agarwal, Hilda Fielding MBE and Chas Hanvy who passed away this year. We are grateful for their contributions to Albion over the years and their families remain in our thoughts and prayers.
We currently have a membership of 32 at Albion. We have myself as Secretary, Gillian as Treasurer and five serving Elders, Roman, Bob D and John S, who are due to serve for this coming year with another two Elders voted in and confirmed at the church AGM. Thanks go to Pat J who has stepped down as a serving Elder and Margaret F who is taking a well-earned sabbatical after her contributions as a serving Elder.
Once again we enter an uncertain future, but we have a very strong church family who help and support each other and whilst we are few in numbers, we continue to discover the many talents we have at Albion. We will always welcome anyone who is willing and able to contribute more to the work of Albion in spiritual, pastoral and practical terms.
I am honoured to be the Secretary at Albion for another year and as members, Albion is our church and we are custodians of this wonderful establishment. Let’s all move forward into 2022 with the faith and hope that God will guide us throughout these difficult times.

Treasurer’s Report
First, I want to thank everyone for your commitment to continuing to support Albion Church in your financial giving. Our regular giving either through the church collection plate or direct giving was £13,257 which almost covers our Ministry & Mission payments of £14,496. The gift aid claimed on personal donations including GASDS (unidentified donors from the collection plate) for 2020 was £4,141 – thank you – please continue to let Gillian or Roman know if you are a tax payer so we can claim gift aid on your donations, it makes a BIG difference. The flower fund donations were £765 covering our costs of £560.
In 2021 we were able to hold our fund-raising events: the plant sale, Heritage Day, Christmas Craft Fair, Christmas Tree Festival and our monthly coffee mornings- raising over £5100. The events bring lots of people into our church, this is our mission in the community and one of our strengths as a church.
Other income includes £1,425 from room hire, £4892 from the COIF investments, £3190 net wedding fees, £4040 net funeral fees, plus donations of £2654 from funerals which we can claim gift aid via the GASDS scheme.
We supported Reuben’s Retreat, Willow Wood and The Children’s Society with our Christmas Collections plus £837.50 for Commitment for Life.
Our major expenses are fuel: Gas cost £3,602 and Electricity around £7,000. As with our domestic fuel costs we expect a significant rise in these costs in 2022. Please be mindful when using the heating.
We have faced a few challenges with the maintenance of the building as detailed in Joe’s report. We are managing to balance the books… We have gone digital!! We now have a contactless card machine, donations can be made by PayPal, we have the text giving donations, in an attempt to keep up with this cashless society..
2 Corinthians Chapter 8 is thoughtful reading about Christian Giving, not just the Gift of money but of ourselves; verse 12 says: If you are eager to give, God will accept your gift on the basis of what you have to give, not on what you haven’t.

Report from Revd. Graham T
2021/2022 – so far has gone from tentative reopening to getting back into the stride of things.
However, due to the constantly changing circumstances and poor diary notes, this report is brief, less detailed or specific than I would normally prepare.
We returned to the building at Pentecost / Whit Sunday (as it tends to be called ‘up here’) but there were still restrictions and guidance in place. However, it was really appropriate to celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit as we came back together in face to face worship. The birth of the church as it is often called – and in 2021, in some ways, may actually have been the re-birth of the church.
Through 2021 and continuing Zoom played a part. Some meetings were more easily conducted on line without the need to travel. The same applied to a number of worship service, study events and other conversations. This worked well for the people who have the technological devices to join in and left others unfortunately out. The circulation of news, both electronically and printed, kept everyone in touch as did the excellent pastoral care – by phone, zoom or in person – carefully and distanced as thought necessary or appropriate. Care offered to bereaved families, especially when the services had to be ‘managed’, was another example of how loving, thoughtful and supportive everyone has been.
The Missional Partnership continues to develop. Nothing really specific or massively outstanding, but developments about communication, interaction, ideas, planning have all taken place and will continue to do so. Lawrence Heath Moore at the most recent ‘gathering’ reminded us – we are us – as has always been the case. Sheila continues to encourage and enable us all as we grapple with what it means to be a Partnership together with the Steering group working through how it may work in practice. All five ministers meet on line once a month – not making any decisions – but pastorally supporting each other. And the Steering Group decided a small sub-committee should explore how the two stipendiary ministers might best engage with the whole partnership in 2023. It isn’t about the preaching plan, though that is part of it, but all activities, existing and those yet to be explored, might be best served to grow the Christian presence locally.
We look forward to considering “Renewed Beginnings” but before that is the 50[th] Anniversary of the birth of the United Reformed Church. Some plans are already being considered, nationally, within our Synod and also in the local fellowships. You will hear more about a bowl travelling around the Central Area of NWSynod over the next few months in a relay. How it will be ‘used’ locally will build into a picture of the uniqueness of all the different fellowships and then back into Synod. Another celebration might be a street party to advertise out presence as we remembered the dedication and long service of our Queen in June.
There is a great deal on the horizon, some almost on the door step, other aspects several months ahead. Two sabbaticals this year, mine (now just about) and Ruth’s later in the year. We expect to return refreshed, renewed and further inspired in God’s service. Of course, the work of all disciples, by whatever name and with or without earthly qualification continues. Let us build, grow, plough, scatter, mix, knead, seek, find - giving thanks for our lives to this point and offering them in continued service as we look to the future.

Baptisms and Weddings.
Baptisms We have had three Baptisms so far in 2022 and a further seven are booked in the coming months. We are very fortunate to have at least four lay preachers in our own fellowship, who are willing to do Baptisms as necessary. It is good that we are able to welcome these new lives into the fellowship of our Church, as we continue to reach out into the wider community of God’s people.
Weddings Twelve weddings and one blessing are booked and confirmed for 2022 and we have Ministers in place for each of these. In addition, we have one vow renewal and one wedding, which has been confirmed by payment in full for 2023. I expect more to follow, as I have several interviews planned over the next few weeks.
We also have one wedding booked for December 2024.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Ministers, Organists and Registrars, who continue to officiate at these weddings, not forgetting our Caretaker, without whom, we would not be able to welcome these families into our beautiful Church building.

Building Committee Report
Hi everyone! The new building committee was formed in 2021, I Joe A, became chair of the building committee! Bob D, Colin B, Derek S and Gillian L treasurer also became members. We have achieved quite a few things between us! It was decided that we needed some white lines for our car park at the side of church so we acted upon this and got the job done pretty quickly. The total amount for this was £540 money well spent Unfortunately, during June 2021, we had a leak in the side of church on a flat roof! It has taken some time to get the roof repaired as we had to go through synod to get approval for the work to be done. The recommendation was to use asphalt – like for like. When the old covering was removed, all the timbers had completely rotted adding to the expense. We also have had two chimney stacks repointed and caped as they were unsafe and smoke was coming out of the brick work. K. D. Roofing have done the work for this, the total cost for this was £9,980.
The motor on the church clock also stopped working and we had to get this replaced! This also took many months for the repair. We had a fundraising page set up on Facebook which Gillian created. This did very well, we got a lot of donations from this and from friends in church. We also received generous donations in memory of Doris Agarwal, Doris’s husband Clifford was one of the people responsible for winding the clock many years ago. We finally raised enough to pay for it. Cumbria Clock Company repaired and serviced the clock this was arranged through Derek and Colin. The cost for this was £2,934
Many things have been happening around church, there are many routine jobs to do in regard to safety checks in and around church. A gardening team was created in 2020 as the council don't tend to church grounds anymore. Myself, Joe A, Bob D, Derek S, Roman and Colin B now attend to these jobs: grass cutting, hedge trimming and also weeding around church. Some of the women Barbara, Carol and Rachel help with weeding and planting.
We are now awaiting the quinquennial inspection; this is carried out by an architect and covers the condition of the church inside and out! so fingers crossed they won't find too much work that needs doing.
So has you can see there are a lot of things that need doing on a regular basis.

The Circle
Our first tentative get together was 8th July 2021, after lockdown for covid. Everyone confessed to feeling uncertain, this is now the new normal, mask or not to mask, go out or not; our very vulnerable friends have been very lonely and anxious throughout this unprecedented time.
Our programme of events has been quite varied.

Beetle drive, a new venture organised by Glenys F, and much enjoyed.

Lunch at Notcutts Garden Centre.

Speakers from Trinity Church in Audenshaw, John L, who spoke about his life on the buses and trams, and Valerie W who introduced us to her showbiz family. We are grateful to them both for giving of their time and expertise.

We arranged a Christmas Meal at Smokies for December; 28 of us sat down to a turkey dinner, followed by entertainment by an Elvis impersonator: everyone said what a great afternoon we had.
Our Christmas Tree theme this year was "Joy to the World", beautifully depicted by Glenys, Sandra, Linda and Carol.
In February, 2022, we celebrated our 6th year anniversary with lunch at Christ Church tearoom, lovely food, attentive staff, well worth a visit.
We were sad to lose Barbara Davies as she moved to live near her family, and we pray that she will soon settle and be happy in her new surroundings.
We usually get together on 2nd Thursday of each month, do join us, we have found renewed fellowship and strengthening of bonds as we meet together.

The Semi Circle
Albion Church Services going forwards into 2022 and beyond. After an abrupt Covid Closure in March 20221 Albion Church opened up with live face to face worship on Sunday 23[rd] May 2021.
What a wonderful day it was when we moved forwards with regular services and a rota of visiting preachers to lead worship. Optimism after Covid.
There is also a desire to breathe new life into worship without losing the traditions unique at Albion.
We have a wonderful church building which brings with it maintenance challenges and weatherproofing. We all look forwards to a time when, if it rains, we will not have to put out pots and pans hither and thither to collect incoming rain water.
We are also blessed with a wonderful church organ which brings majesty to our worship elevating hymn singing to another level when the organist pulls out all the stops.
There is a desire in moving forwards to stop ourselves becoming stale. I pray our music group can enrich and enhance Sunday worship. Praise the Lord
Praise the Lord, O my soul, While I live I will praise the Lord I will sing praises to my God while I have my being. Psalm 146 verses 1 and 2.
The Music Group has been ticking over during Covid.
We decided to give ourselves a name. We are now The Semi-Circle. We wanted to compliment Albion Ladies Group, The Circle and we agreed on The Semi- Circle.
The Semi-Circle music group presently comprises of men and continues to meet on a Monday evening. We are exploring ways of inviting The Circle to join us. To enhance Sunday worship and widen our Gospel repertoire.
The Semi-Circle has a vision.
Praise the Lord. For it is good to sing praises to our God. For it is pleasant and praise is beautiful. Psalm 147 verse 1.
The Semi-Circle has progressed from singing and jamming as a music group to introducing Gospel music. This has been a positive move to enable us to bring something extra to Sunday morning worship. This we hope to develop and try to involve The Circle. Exciting times ahead. Our desire is to mix the traditional organ led hymn singing with some Gospel music to bring a different flavour to Sunday worship.
I will sing a new song to You O God, on a harp of ten strings I will sing Praises to you.
Psalm 144 verse 9.
The Semi-Circle would like the Church to be more involved and towards that end can you let us know your favourite Hymns, Gospel songs and bible verses so we can incorporate them into worship. Whenever David or myself or The Semi-Circle lead worship we want you to contribute and be part of moving forwards.

Roman
Gardening
By the time of the annual Church meeting, it is likely the gardening team will have given the lawns their first cut of the season. The task will be made easier this year now that we have a new lawnmower and a full set of gardening tools in the cellar.
Our team of volunteers have been able to keep on top of the lawns and hedges around Church over the last two years. However, if anyone else feels able to assist, there is probably more we can do to clear and plant out borders. Some of us are very happy to do the ‘donkey work’ but we don’t all have professional gardening skills!
Concerts
A number of concerts have now been planned for this year. We look forward to having your support at all of these events. As you would expect in the times we are living, there will be a heavy focus on supporting charities.
The Manchester Organists’ Association have run a ‘composition competition’ where musicians have been asked to compose a piece of organ music, and this has been adjudicated by Malcolm Archer. The winning entries will be played at Albion on 23[rd] April at 4.00pm in a recital by Marc Murray, who is a member of the Association and Director of Music at Bury Parish Church..
On Sunday 8[th] May at 3.00pm we have an organ concert by Jonathan Scott. This again will be a charity focussed event and will give us all the opportunity to hear Jonathan play live and meet the organist behind so much entertainment we have enjoyed during the last two years.
On Sunday 22[nd] May, at 3.00pm there will be a concert by the choir run by Liz Taylor who rehearse at Albion on Tuesday evenings. Full details to follow, but keep this date free as this concert will specifically support Ukraine charities.

Guiding
Wednesday nights are busy nights at Albion. Rainbows, Brownies and Guides started 2021 meeting via Facebook and on Zoom, but in May 2021 we were allowed to return to face-to-face meetings. With all the risk assessments, one-way systems, masks, sanitising, cleaning between groups in place we reopened!! Fortunate to have such a large space to meet in, we had lots of fun being back together. We worked on skills builders, badges and unit meeting activities and gaining theme awards. Kaycee B, one of our Guides was awarded the Guide Gold Award. As government guidelines changed and restrictions reduced we were able to celebrate Christmas with a party for the Brownies at the Christmas Tree Festival and Guides at Pizza Hut.
In March 2022 the Guides spent a weekend at Seven Springs, Disley and the Brownies are to go there at the end of April. Guiding is growing again at Albion. In September 2022 we will celebrate 100 years since 9[th] Ashton Guides first opened. We hope you will join us with our celebrations.

I have prepared the financial statements on pages 1 to 4 for the year ended 31st December 2021
Independent Examiner's Report
I report on the financial statements of Albion United Reformed Church for the year ended 31st December 2021 which are set out on pages 1 to 4
Respective responsibilities
The church is responsible for the preparation of the financial statements, and considers that the audit requirement of section 43(2) of the Charities Act 1993 (the Act) does not apply. It is my responsibility to state, on the basis of procedures specified in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners under Section 43(7)(b) of the Act whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of Independent Examiner's report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions of the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records held by the church and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the financial statements, and seeking explanations concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the financial statements.
Independent Examiner's statement
In connection with my examination of the church funds, nothingcame to my attention which gave me cause to believe otherwise than that the financial statements accord with the accounting records of the church, and that those records satisfied the requirements of the Act. I am not aware of any matter to which attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the financial statements to be reached.
