Reverend Jalle¢ Calderley The entire church family was greatly sadden¢d by the passing of Revd Janet Calderley. who died pe￿efullY in her sleep at Trinity Hospice. Blackpool, on Friday 3rd October. Janet had been a wonderful and faithful servant to St Anne's URC, and io the LancashitE Wesi Missional Partnership, since arrivTng here in the midst of Covid r¢stri¢tions in 2020. Janet's roots were in Bolton - she never lost her distinctive l(Kal accent and was bless¢d with a n￿nOnSense. positive approach to most problems. She had previously served in the North Easi until 2004. before ￿turnIng lo the North West to lake up ministy firstly in Fumess. and then in the soUth￿rt ar¢& Despit¢ the Challenges created by the Covid restrictions in place when Jon¢t arrived with us, she immediately set about introducing herself and starting to get to know as many people as possible. It very quickly became obvious that Janet was one of those most special Ekople, clearly guided and enthused by the Holy SpiriL who led and inspired and who befrtended those who were in need of comfort. The church services which Janet led on Sundays and Thursdays were eagerly anticipated, as were her extremely thoughtful Home Services and monthly reflections. All of her worK and her dealings with those whom she me¢ displayed brightly her unfailing love for Gc41 and humanity. Janet was also a driving force for the church in its work with the community - whether that be the homeless and isolated at our Warm Space every winter, or the children. young people and families at Messy Church. In the S years we were blessed to have Janet with us she had a huge impact on the lives of a great many people, and has immeasurably hel￿ the chU￿h in taking its mission forward. We feel very keenly the loss of her compassion, her Sense of fun, and her inspirntion. Review of the Year The year has thankfully seen the life of our chU￿h continue to flourish. We have rejoiced once again both in our worship. and in fulfilling a meaningful role in s¢tvic¢. fellowship and outreach within the community. Thmughout th¢ year the ¢hurch wntinued to build on its support for the work of Churches Tog¢th¢r in St Anne's. Arrangements are r¢gularly made for ways lo c¢l¢brdt¢ occasions in the tt)wn when all the chur¢h¢s ¢an come together to participat¢. opening our witness to residents and visitors alike. At the start of the year wntractors moved into the church to instal the new electrical heating system. The work was compleled promptly and with l¢ss inconvenience than had been feared. The church now has a heating system which is far more ¢￿I¢l¢nt than the previous gas-fired central heating. It is entirely flexible as regards which a￿a$ ￿ heated at any given time. and also as to the de8ree of heat whi¢h is at¢d. Th¢ ¢hange has s¢¢n a r¢du¢tion In our footprinL a more cornfortable ambi¢nce - and a noticeable reduction in our ¢n¢rgy bills. At the end of May the church was the venu¢ for 'Thy Kingdom Come.. when we became a small part of this global ecumeni¢al prayer movement for the day. Revd Janet had been & passionate advocate of this movement in re¢¢nt years. and again was the driving force in providing prayer stations situated throughout the church. where people were able to ¢om¢ and pray. July saw St Anne's Carnival and procession. As usual the church was very involved joining with Churches Together for their award_winning walking float theTned around the film 'The Greatest Story Ever Told.. Members also assisted over IK)th days with the stall in Ashton Gardens. In October we re-opened the Warni Space in the community r(M)m, which was open every W¢dnesday throughout th¢ Winter, ho￿Illg the fir￿1 session in early April. This is an opportunity for anyone to com¢ and enjoy warnlth. food and friendship. Each y¢ar we see more and more p￿PIe wming to take advantage of this offer. In November w¢ welcomed our friends froTn Fairhaven URC to the first of two joint services at our church - the other being in January. These are joyful occasions. where the church and the choir are blessed with greater Aumbers. and where we share in trne Christian fellowship. The church was then very Involv￿ with th¢ service of Blessing the Crib tn St Anne's Square in December. The highlight of the Toy & Gift service was a delightful Choir from Mayfield Primary Sch(K)l. That service once again bore witness to the generosity of Spirit within the chll￿h congregation, resulting in a huge number of parcels and bags bursting with tOy5. These wer¢ taken to the Salvation Army Blackpool for distribution among many deserving families throughout the area. Also in December the church was Chosen to host the Nativity Play for the Kinderhouse Nursery in St Ann¢'s. The church was absolutely packed full with mums, dads and families enchanted by the perforn]ance of their little ones. All of those were there agra that this had been an emotional and moving start to the Chrlsthias period. January saw our involvement once again with the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. and in Febtiwy work started on the long-awaited redecoration of the ch￿￿h hall. In March th¢ ¢hur¢h was again the host for our partnership churches at their annual 'awayday'. This year it took the form of 'Worship Works, _ a day of prdise and worship all ¢entred around uplifting music and hymns. The talented musicians ¢nsured that everyone went home enthused and inspired. At Easter there w&s a moving Candlelit Tenebrae service on Maundy Thursday. On G(K)d Friday some members joined the pro¢¢ssion of the cross through the low￿ with pray¢t3 being offered along th¢ journey. Summer, Harvest and Carol Services. Music and singing play an imFx)rtant part in our services. We thank the choir who lead the singing each Sunday under the expert guidance of Lisa Atherton. our musical director. We are also indebted to Pat Allen-FrosL John Coop¢r and Margaret Pearson for playing the piano for our w¢ekly Thursday Shopper'5 servjces. Finally, we thank the members and friends who support both the Sunday Worship and Thursday services ¢a¢h and every week. Mission and Outreach Our church continued to support Christian outreach in the wider world and thanks go to all who have made this possibl¢. The Christian Aid retiring collection in Christian Aid Week raised £228.50 and the Drop Off collection raised £341.50. making a total for the year of £570.00. Some of these donations were by Cheque. totslling £6S. payabl¢ direct to Chrtstian Aid. The Christmas retiring collection for The Leprosy Mission raised £76.50. sent by cheque from our church account. Donations through the year from our individual supw)rters enabl¢d us to send a cheque for £390 to TLM from our separate Community account * the end of th¢ church's financial year. SafeguArding Safeguarding is defined by the URC as 'the promotion of the safety and welfare of children and adults who ar¢ at risk of, or experiencing, harni, abuse or neglect in all fornis, At St Anne's URC we believe that abuse in any forni is unacceptable. and inwnsistent with the Christian life. Safeguardin8 is taken seriously at ihe church, where It is recognised that w¢ all have a resp)nsibility to help prevent any fomi of abuse and n¢gle¢t and to ensure the wellbeing and pastoral we of those who are, or tnay be. at risk. Durin8 the year one safeguarding concern was identified. This were dealt with by the Safeguarding Co- ordinator with assistance as required from the relevant team at syn￿ and it is believed that matter has been properly and adequately addressed. The church's Safeguarding Policy was reviewed and re-adopted in the summer. and appropriate training is available to volunteers and helpers throughout the year. Pastornl Care During the past year. all those involved with pastordl care have continued to do their best to support everyone within the church family. whatever the nature of their difficulties. This year, as well as losing old friends, we have lost our dearly-lova and respectejj minister Rev Janet Calderley who passed away in October. Sthrfishes As the 2025126 Starfishas year draws to a close. we thought back and realised that over 20 years had passed by since ST Annes URC first welcomed the OUtr￿ch provided by Starfishes into our church and the community life. its welwm¢ and fomiat still appears to appeal. To a casual observer, it may appear to be he¢ti¢. busy. noisy. but Starfishes works to a hopefully unseen, yet fairly tight tim¢tabl¢, whi¢h enables all present childreffj car¢rs and leaders to mutually enjoy the continuing outreach provided on a temi time Monday morning. Messy Church I'conneet, This has been a very difTicult y¢ar for our Messy Church tram. Our minister. Rev Janet Calderley. became ill during the summer and was admitted to hospitsl. Unfortunately she did not recover and she died peacefully in Trinity Hospice in (ktober 2025. Since she joitked us at the start of the pandemic Janet had been our inspiration, full of ideas and always supplying all the resources for Messy Chur¢h. Inde¢d. she remained our inspiration ev¢n from her hospital bed - asking how we were doing and continuing to make valuable suggestions. However, following Janet's death. and with the number of children reducing we felt it was tim¢ to put Messy Church on hold and to consider how we should proceed. Over the last 10 years the core team had forn]ed a strong bond. and it was agreed we should not let this strong connection stop. After discussion wilh R¢v Daleen ten Cat¢. our Missional Discipleship Mentor, we decided to maintain this connection by continuing to hold meetings on the third Friday of every month as we had for Messy Church. These meelings are now at lunchtime. when we gather to eaL talk 8nd pray together in a relaxed and non-¢hallenging atmosphe￿. No on¢ is ever pr¢ssurised into speaking unless they wish to do so. We believe that the goal has been achieved, and the attendance is very go(xl. So, although disappointed that Messy Church is no more at th¢ momenL we are v¢ry positiv¢ that this new venture is a way forward - not only for church Mallbe￿ but as an effective outreach to the wid¢r community. Junior Church The older children at Junior Church bewming In¢￿inglY busy with other clubs and activiti¢s and are no longer in church each week. When they do attend. if it is communion. they like lo stay in and participate. They enjoyed putting on a pKrfomiance at Easter and we hope lo do more of that with different stories and lessons from the Bible in the future. In order to keep them ¢ngaged we plan to replenish the quiet bags and ensure the content is actually quiet! It is felt that thes¢ smaller children would benefit more from stopping in to appr￿late the church itself. the music and th¢ singing. An atmosphere they won't find anywhere else. It is also planned to put colouring ￿tiVitieS in the choir vesty as an option if parents ned to take them OUL or they just want to access these. In thi8 way the parent& who would have to accompany their children as they are so Small. get to listen to most of the service. If we are planniTEg any messy Craft acliviti¢s they will always be in the hall. E¢0 Church In Jun¢ we began a review of pollinator activity in the Church garden and the ftndings influenced the way in which Eco Church has progressed. A FaceErfx)k page 'Discover Hub. was started and is being used to show what is happ¢ning in the Church garden. A new logo followed. emphasising that St Anne's URC has always had nature and craft at its hearL The Discover Hub page promotes participation - for example the RSPB Big Garden Count. the Big Buttertly Count and the Flower-lnsect Timed Count. The results of these observations encourag¢ ideas for making improvements to our garden areas. An example of thi5 in the Church garden has been the Creation of Wildlife T¢ep¢¢ Stscks by the Bug Hotrl, and Bird Feed Garland5 to place ther¢. In September the first s¢t of ten Bags 2 Grow (B2G) went out under the Eco Church logo, with th¢ B2G - Box2Grow following the them¢ of Harvrt and My Littliest AllotmeTtts were distributed to Messy Church, Starfishes and Sunday Club famili¢s. Tn Cktokr it was a Bag2Grow filled with French garlic following the theme of sharin& and since then B2Gs have been distributed following themes and inspired by Bible readings. Eco Church has also used the Craft Fairs hosted at th¢ Church to try to rnise funds but more importantly raise awareness of sustainable products. The list of prizes used so far include Seep Eco Household products, Twool, Little Green Paper Shop. WillS()w and Hon￿ Bee Good Beeswax Food Wraps. What has b¢¢n amazing is the response of teenagers and young people to these products. Some of these products may be more expensive to buy, and when they have been won. the winners have been genuinely thankful and grateful for winning a plastic-free totslly sustainable prcrtlu¢t. In Autumn we started an entirety new project- the Mediterrdnean Border. A suitsbl¢ spa¢¢ was found for IL by the Car Park on a SOLtth facing wall. It is a work in progress. but the idea is lo showcase how a small plol productive and will highlight the challenges of gardenin8 in climate change. A baby brought to Starfishes today will face a climatically different world than that of their great grandparents. Eventually the idea is that it will provide a living r￿d bank of herbs and when all cars are ¢l¢ctric. the border will k open for adults and children to stroll up and pick herbs to add to salads and recipes. Our Church garden does have a wo(yJland area and tr¢es that have been sequestering Car￿￿1n for over 100 years. atKI also a lot of moss. Moss is an ancient plant, surviving previous climatic changes through millennia and can stor¢ more carlx)n than trees. A start has now been made on our own moss garden. and this will wntinue later in the year when damp conditions return. Finally. the fruits of the laiKtrurs of our families nurturing th¢ir B2Gs are beginning to filter back, with conversations alKYUt garlic, tomato plants and strnwberries either growing - or not growing. Delightful pictur¢s are being sent in to be posted on the Discover Hub Fa¢ebook page of tiny beads of blossom, a first glimpse of a pollinated strawberry flower and the healthy green leaves of garlic. In the Chuwh garden. we welcomed the blossom of the apple tree planted &$ part of th¢ late Queen Elizabeth II Green Canopy Initiative. Thursday Club As is Customary, there were no regular meetings of Thursday Club for the six month5 between April and October btrt a get-together in the forni of an ind(KTrr picnic took place in the hall on Thursday 26 June 2025. Regular fortnightly meetings began again on 2 (ktober 2025 and ran until 19 March 2026 with a break over the festive season. In total there were 12 meetings including the Annual General Meeting (AGM). The average attendance was 33 with as many as 45 at one rn¢eling. Of those attendin& the majority are women and most are from the wider, local community. The varied progrdmme for 2025 - 2026 included an organ recital in the Church, entertainment by Trinitas Day Choir and speakers Covering a range of topics. We heard about the life of Edith litgby, Preston's most famou5 suffrdgette, and th¢ s¢lection and experiences of a woman who had been ¢le¢t¢d as a member of parliatnent in the last Conseryative government. In other talks, a hundred years of housework, with no mod cons, the history of ch￿0[Ate and sweets, and evidence that the Romans had lived in the Fylde revealed some interesting fa¢ts. In one meeting individuals brought along and spoke about items of special interest to them. Other lopics within the progrdmme includ¢d learning how to s￿t and d¢al with scams, the work of the Royal National LifelKiat Institutio￿ and Pastor David Grimshaw's work in The Gambia. At the AGM it was agreed that a donation of £500 should be rnade to chU￿h funds. Also. a committee of seven was fornied to plan the programme for 2026- 2027. Main¢ellance and Use of Buildings Th¢ major item of work during th¢ year was the installation of the new electrical heating system in the Church. An application for grant support from Synod was unfortunately unsuccessful, and so the full cost had to be borne from our own r¢sotwc¢s. The Fundrdising team rose to the challenge magnificently, providing a wonderful contribution towards meeting the cost. The new system allows for much greater flexibility in ternis of how and where h¢at is provided - resulting in the Church being a warnier and more welcoming environment. It has also had the added bonus of reducing our Carknn footprint whilst also lowering our energy ¢osts. The existing gas central heating system was drnined and decommissioned- with two of the boilers being used to replace the ageing boilers in the hall and community room. ST ANNE,￿ON￿EA UNrfED REFORMED CHURCH CHARrry NO 1128043 REVIEW AND ELDERS, REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 APRIL 2026 (continued) Maintenance alld U8e of Buildings (Continued) The church roof is now over 130 years old and, unsurprisingly. is starting to show its age. Leaks in different areas of the roof t)ow present themselves at various times with depressing regularity. It can often prove dI￿lcult to pinpoint the precise ¢ause. as a leak can sometitnes vanish - only to reappear when the wind blows from a different direction. The roofers who carried out the replacement of the hall roof18St year have had to revisit on a few 0￿SionS to help with keeping the church watertight throughout th¢ year. Whilst not quite as old as the roof. the ma￿lfICent pipe organ also required attention after the large bellows failed. putting the instrument of action for a few months. Repair is a very specialized business, and quite costly. The church w&s blessed by a very significant anonymous donation to meet almost all of the cost of this work. This was rettived with grnte￿I thanks. and our worship could once again be stirringly led hnd inspired by this wonderful iDStrum¢nl. Havtng replaced the roof of the hall and community r(x)m l&st year. work on th¢ redecoration of those areas was ￿gun in March. The building is heavily used throughout th¢ y¢ar. on an almost daily basis and as & consequence the fabric and finish are subject to a great deal of wear and te8r. Memlxrs were unanimous in their d¢sir¢ to see th¢ hall freshened UP> and it is hoped that the improv¢m¢nt will be appr¢ciat¢d by all who use the building. Other premises work throughout the year included.. Repairs to the car park wall- twjc¢! _ after sections were kn￿ked down by a car and then a lony. Further repairs to some p)thol¢s in the car park. Cleardnce of large amounts of rubbish and unwanted items from vaTiOUS areas. The buildings and grounds have, of course. continued to require significant routine upkeep and maintenance throughout the year. wheth¢r brought aiKJUt by damage (accidental or otherwise) or through simple wear and tear due to the passage of time. L¢ttings of the hall, community r(x)m and ChU￿h have b¢¢n maintained at similar leve15, and these represent both a welcome source of income and an opportunity for meaningful engagement with many sectors of the communtty. Fundraising The Fundraising Team have had another very busy and successful year. working together to achieve our goal. which this year was to contribute to having our new heating system installed in th¢ Church. Which we all agr¢¢ has made a huge difference in the winter titne .During the year we have had a variety of events every month. to include 4 Craft Fair4 2 Table Top Sales .4 Coffee Mornings to include (2 for Charity) 2 afternoon Teas. 2 ¢hoir Concerts, a Christmas Fair, a Fashion Show,a BookFair and a Ukulele Band Concert. All of which w¢r¢ well supp)rted and very enjoyable. We are now looking forward to another year of Fundrnising with a variety of events to look forward to. Our next Fundraisin8 Year IS to help with funds towards our much n¢ed¢d hall and r(M)ms rethoration. 10. Decisions were made by members tr) incur significant capital expenditure which was ¢all¢d for to continue the prudent upkeep of the fabric of the buildings and also to improve the ¢omfort and ambience within the church. Those works are outlined in the 'Maintenance and Use of Buildings. wtion of this report. Funding for those items of work was wonderfully supported by the fundrnising team. and als() by re¢ours¢ to our own current reserves. Neverthele&s. the figures provided within the Financial Statement below provid¢ the full story. and present a quite alaming picture of the recent decline in the Church's finances. During the year to 30 April 2026 the Church's total inwme dropped to £112.000. Compared with £149,400 the previous year - a fall of 250/0. tkspite th¢ fad that overnll expenditure this year reduced slightly (from £188,400 last year, to £168.4(M) this year) the net ¢ffe¢t has b¢en a v￿Y sizeable deficitloverspend of £56,300. Our income last year was buoyed to some extent by the receipt of legacies from ch¢rish¢d members and friends of the church. together with a repayment of over £7.000 for a htstoric Gift Aid claim. However, what is very clear from this year's accounts is the extent to which regular giving has fallen- in the sens¢ of direct debitslstanding orders, freewill envelope4 and the collection plate. Regular giving in the previous year totalled £77,7(K>. This year the figure has drOp￿d to £57,700 - a fall of 25 /0. In fact the magnitude of this fall now means that the level of regular giving barely meets the cost of our M&M contributions to Synod. with the consequence that we are now very dependent on our various fundraising actvities to pay for the routine numing expenses of the Church. As a result ihe Church is now having to cash in some of its limiteAJ investments simply to pay the routine bills. Without a sustained and significant improvement in ￿rSonal giving the position is simply unsustainabl¢. Principal fullding sources for the year under review Donations and gifts. som¢ of which attract a tax benefit in the forn) of Gift Aid. The other primary sources of income are fvndraising and lettings. Investment policy Aside from retaining a prudent atnount in reserve each year, the Church's funds are to be spent in the short terni so there are no funds for long tern) investment. The exception is the M¢Cappin restricted fund which can be spent only on repairs and renewals and, in ¢ss¢n¢¢, when no other funds are available. and any gift which can only be S￿nt &s authorised by the donor. Reserves policy As the church r¢li¢s principally on voluntary contributions which cannot be anticipated with any great degree of a￿u[a¢Y. lh¢ Chuwh's tK)licy on reserves needs to be flexible.
