Annual Report of St Mark’s Methodist Church, Tottenham 2022-23
This has been a good year for the church as we have seen more and more people returning to worship after Covid. There are still some people who have not returned and others who have decided to leave but almost each week we continue to see new people coming among us. During the year 7 people were received into the church through confirmation and 4 by transfer from other churches around the world. Membership at the end of the year was 322
A Church Council Away Day was held in October 22 when the trustees were able to look back over the past few years to see how far the church has travelled in many areas whilst still having challenges. Time was spent in looking at what it means to be a leader and the responsibility that comes with it. The group shared together their vision for the next 3 years which we hope will be continued in discussions in the coming year.
As Rev Stephen and Sister Myrtle were coming to the end of their 10-year ministry at St Mark’s the church and wider circuit went through the connexional process of stationing. A profile was drawn up seeking a superintendent minister for the New River circuit who would have pastoral charge of St Mark’s and also Ravensdale, a small congregation of around 30 members. Sadly, a match with a minister was not possible. The circuit appointed one of the present ministers, the Rev Thurairajah Samuel, as superintendent and invited both Rev Stephen and Sister Myrtle to do an extra year as part-time active supernumeraries.
One of the ongoing concerns of such a large congregation is that many people do not know one another. To help with this the Church Council decided to provide refreshments after worship on the first Sunday of the month. This would be done on a rota basis by the various pastoral groups. It has been a huge success
The church undertook a major upgrade of the electrics within the sanctuary during the year which included various spot lighting for use in worship events and concerts. The toilets have also been completely refurbished which brought great delight to members of the church and all who use the hall. The total cost of both projects, in the region of £80,000, was raised by the members of the congregation.
As the Sunday School has continued to grow the ongoing issue of space was addressed by deciding to terminate the contract with a small Pentecostal Church who used the one room available to the church so it could become the space for a new ministry with young teenagers during worship. The Winter Soup Kitchen returned for almost 4 months after Christmas serving 20-25 needy people each week.
The church has continued negotiations with Haringey Councl with their offer to renovate the outside of the premises, create a new entrance and up light the tower. This is part of a wide improvement scheme of Bruce Grove and the identification of the importance of our art-deco style tower. The Council have received a grant from English Heritage and this will provide some of the income. The project, entitled Transforming Buildings: Transforming Communities is beginning to take shape and work will begin late 2023.
During the year we thanked a number of the pastoral leaders who had served the church well through the years and managed to appoint some new ones. There are so many people who give their time tirelessly to the service of God through St Mark’s: stewards, musicians and singers, children and youth leaders, those who lead fellowship groups, prayer meetings and share in the outreach ministry of the church as well as living out their faith day by day. We thank God for them all
