The trustees have over the year acted with regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit.
One Church – on two sites As one church, members from both sites continue to work together harmoniously.
Worship
Sunday worship is one of our major activities. We usually have a Sunday morning service at both churches, but from time to time we have shared services on one site. Services at Caversham Heights Church are still streamed by Zoom to include those who are not able to attend church.
Caring
Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)
A team of Pastoral Friends continue to care for all members and adherents. They make regular visits when needed or maintain contact by telephone or e-mail for those people who are not seen regularly in church. They are able to chat to those attending church during social times after the service, so are aware of all those in need of support and prayer. Learning There are 3 active Bible study and worship groups involving members of the church and all led by lay people. They have followed a variety of study material to enhance their knowledge and understanding. There is in addition a prayer group that meets every Thursday morning.
Service & Evangelism Coffee mornings continue, alternating between both churches, giving church members and local residents the chance to socialise in a safe and friendly atmosphere. The Babies and Toddlers Group is thriving, with new people joining regularly as others move on as children move on to other activities or parents return to work. It offers people a safe place to make friends and for children to learn and develop socially. The Arts and Craft Group meets weekly and helps people develop their creative skills as well as providing a friendly meeting point for a variety of people. The buildings are well used, by church groups and diverse community groups, such as pre-schools, dance groups, Kumon, a Bridge Club, a bee-keepers’ association, Brownies, and a Hungarian Language School. There is a monthly Artist and Makers Fair which attracts many local people to view the various stalls as well as partake of refreshments which raise money for variety of charities. The church is also an active member of the Churches Together in Caversham organisation that supports various community projects. REInspired, led by 2 project leaders, takes volunteers into schools to explain aspects of Christian faith. A week-long Holiday Club in the summer attracts children from all areas of Caversham. Regular Messy Church sessions are held at the Weller Centre and attended by a growing number of families. The weekly drop-in at the Baptist Church supports anyone in need. Church members are involved in the production and distribution of the local Christian newspaper.
Resources
Besides raising funds for its own purposes, and for general Methodist purposes, the church raises money for other causes. For example, some church members collect money for Action for Children, and used postage
