responded to this challenge in an extremely positive way.

We wdcomed Fr Ch(yles Brown to Ihts pa￿h in September. and he has brought
much ]oy. life and many ideas with him - 5elffing in so well Ihat il is hord to
believe he h05 0￿Y been he￿ a short wtrle. We also welcomed Mtly Anne
McKenna to the ministry leom os our permanenl deacon. and She has done o
huge omovnt to ctssist wilh parish vi5ihng. l am now confident that our vsiting
is of o standard and degree that would rival an￿here in the Church of
England. and Ihis is something we sh¢J(Ad be proud of. Revd O￿ve ha5 done o
huge omount of work as chaplain lo Wanstead High Street. vtsiling every shop
and bu%ness. ond Fr Rich(rd has continued to provide a very broad range of
Wisdom and orgoni5ation. forwhich l am m05t grateful. We are very blessed to
have such a large and gifted ministry team and of COu￿e 0150 our excellent
team of lay lead￿5 vrfho have led w0￿h1p magnificenty.
Fr Chris McKenna and Mlhr Anne hove commenced OLK monthty healing
service. which hos followed on from ow new 'A Place, mental health group.
started by PCC member James Boast. This has been an imoginative response
to an area of social need highlighted by our PCC. and is a welcome sign that
we are looking out into the wodd. rather Ihan merely inwards to ourselves.
ewise. our new regular Sunday aftemoon 'lea ond chat, for older membets
of the POTi5h has proved populu. os was the Chrthas Dinner on the 251h
December.
PCC meeling5 have been joyful and yoduclive. and it is wonderful that we
now have 5vch a large and varied PCC. l am ￿atefUl to who serve. not on
on PCC, but on ow many committees and groups - and to The Friends. who
have raised mony thousands for the upkeep of OLf churches. and provided us
with great entertainment along the w￿.
Christrnas this year was a porticukK highlght, wtth personal cards being
oddressed and defivered lo ZYX) woperlies in Wonsteod. resulting in the best
Chrtstmas ottendance5 in five yeffj. Cjjr chor reFxesented the parish
wonderfully well ot Southwark Cathedral and bolh the mvsic festival ot

st Mary's and Ihe flower feslivol at Chrisl Church brought hundreds rf not
thousands of ￿lf0[S into our churches. The Grapewne magazine hos flourished
this yeor. gowing from o di51tibulion of I ￿ to I CLK) by the end of the year. and
gaining advertr5ing along the way. We raised a very good amount for extemal
charities and the inceplion of several events. 5Lrh os the Poncake Party. were
welkreceived.

ploying host to individual ond group meetings as well 05 a far few dinners and
p￿les1 New for this year were the Rectory Garden Party in summer. for all
parish volunteer5. and Ihe welkittended August family barbecue, which
rounded off the schod yecT. It has been o defighl to be able to invite so many
of you into my home.
other highflghts of tFMs year for me were the poT￿h exchange to EngeISk￿chen
in April. which wa5 a lovely week spent with wonderhJl people who we look
forword to hosting ￿ Wanstead in 2024. ond Ihe hosting of Qompicha. Bishop
of Mar5abit in Kenya. during UK tour. A per50nol highlight was being
'bumped up, to Rector from Priesl in Charge. This wos accornp￿hed in the
Bishop of 8cTknng's sludy. where I look Sfemo Brown Iwho has seen more Rectors
of WonstecKI Ihan anyone e15el as my wilness. Unfortunate￿. my c¢J had
broken down. but Ihe bishop gclve vs a lift home oflerwardsl One of my
own proudest moments of the year was he￿ing of the number of people from
this parish taking port in the Course in Ctrwislian Studies in 2024: wè have o
bumper crop meeling in Ihe vesty each week.
This Is all not to gloss over the sadder and more conceming parts of Ihis yeor.
We said goodbye to several of our very kIn￿anding and loyal church
members, wilh our Pl￿Sh mowiing the dealhs of Pen GadicL M4Jgaret Manser
and John Eyre Fxjrticularly. and we also bode farewell lo several who have
moved away. Their gifts of love remain wilh us. but we feel their 105S
nonetheless.
The burglary at Christ Church in December was a shock to Ihe system and
allhough the wder community of Wan5tead was wondeffiJl in rollying rovnd -
more than replacing the stolen colleclion for the Children's Society (indeed.
roising more than £2,5(￿1 for Ihis cou5e)- the bss of many of our parish baptism.
wedding and funeral records ¢Je FKo%fjng very cfifficult to replace. Youlh and
children's mini51ry remains an area in vthich improvement 15 requwed. despite
mvch effort by many. And Ihe fact thal we minisler to a World which largely
isn't very interested. is of CO￿ the largest challenge we face: there is on ever-
more urgent need lo grow younger in temis of 0￿ volvnleers. and this is proving

chollenge. although we have seen steady wogess this Ye￿ in addressing

necessary to inprove access and security ot St M(Yy's crypt.
Reading the varicMJS conlrÉbulion5 niade to this annual report. it is clear thaf we
have done a lot in 2023. The Spwtt 15 moving here. for s￿e - and 2024 win no
doubt be a yecy where we see the development of many of the Ihings we
have set n place thi5 year. as well os some exlro 'new' things. which wil no
doubt surprise us dong Ihe way. This p￿1$h 15 okvays a busy one. but we must
remember to be Mary at least as much os we ore Martha. In our work and in

2023 has seen a conlinualion of trAJkfjng Ihe place of the church within the
community. Involvement wth non<hvrch goers. through such Ihings as the
Forget Me Nots singe￿. classic car shows. fin in a Bin and activities dvring
Wansteod Fringe ore developing local engogemenl. We ore hoping to further
develop our strong rek]tion5hip with Ihe Organise￿ of the Fringe and make
more use of the church over Ihe corrmng yecx5. The changes lo services within
the parish have helped to estobkh Sunday servtces. as the church is no longer
closed one Sunday a monlh. Attendance has remoined sleacty over the year
and the variety of services now on offer in Ihe parr5h reflects well on Ihe energy
of our Rector and hi5 team.
A number of projects at st Muy's continue to develop. Jomes Poter50n hos
continued to work hcyd on enhancing the entrance to the crypl. raising money
for the prqect by giving to￿5 during Wan5tead Fringe and entertaining
' Heritoge London, visits. The DAC visiled Ihe crypt logetherwith the Reclor and
we wli be moving fThard to contoctor biddwig phase d￿Ing 2024.
Over the post few yea￿. we have hod to remove many ash tree5, which were
suffering from Ash Dieback. We now have space to replant and have storted
on a replacement schedule. Ttsee further trees have had to be removed from
Ihe north perimeter os they were damaging the Grode11 listed railngs odjacent
to Overton Drive. Sody. during Ihe summer. the Poppy Tral was damoged by
vandals and many poppie5 had lo be replaced. A new. stronger. version of
the poppies will be in5taled in 5￿4.
Ith the help of Phil Ryan's team. Ihe Churchyard remains well kept ond
accessible. 05 well a5 developing as o no*we reserve of some note.

The ashes interment plot in our churchy¢Jd has just eight po%tion5 remaining.
and o new area is to be identified to alow for futwe interments ond
accompanying remembrance plaques.
The disobled access lift is beyond economic repair. whli e a pemionenf solution
is being developed wrfhin the plans fcr the sovth wall restorotion, o temporary
ramp syslem has been pwchased and works well. 11 is deployed for major
services and events. and when we are pr￿0thfied thol there is o need for ste
free access.
Smilh of Derby contirMJe to care for the tower clock at Sl mr￿S. Some of the
linkage system thal chime the betrs hod stretched and fallen apart resulting in
rni￿ed chimes. James PotW50n managed lo make repaKs and hi5 work was
complimented by 'Smith5' when they came to service the clock. The interior
clocl which I believe to be quite ancient. remains n good order.
The Organ at st Mary's celebrated I￿ yeors of installation in May and Alison
Wells arronged a very successful music festival over the annivetsary weekend
to cornrnemorate the nslallotion.

commvntty for Ihe Trooping The Colour celebrations. affording o grandstand

The Harvesl Supper was held in the drive ol fhe church. The event is wel
supported and is eagerly anlicipoted eoch year. The Reclor arranged for
musical accompaniment. engagng talent from withrn the congegation. This
was well received.
A new. adjustable organ bench has been donaled by a generous benefactor.
Both of our churche5 have benefited from thi5 donation and our Ihanks go out
lo anonymous donor. The benche5 (Ye well made and Should st￿1 be in use
when our organ celeEffates its b1cen1er￿ry.
Pew cv5hions hove started to appeor at st Marys. The completion of
comfortable seoting within Ihe chLrch should be fulfiled in early 2024. We ore
grateful to the late John Sunley who made if possible lo enhance the sealing
wlhin the church due to the legacy he left to the pori5h.
During Lent. as port of her Lent Pli grrrnoge. Bishop Gull paid us o visit. attending
Wanstead Church School. Chr￿t Church and St Mory's. On herwalL BFshop Gu
wa5 accompanied by Ihe Bishop of Barking and chldren from the Church
School. Al St Mary'5 the school choT sang for the btshop5.
On Good Friday. Alrson WelL% pul together o choir lo sing. 'Staner's Crucifixion,.
It was a memorable event. vrtwch was st￿1 being spoken about ot Christrna5.
The 'Nine Lessons and C￿015.. candle lit se￿￿e was bock to pr￿0Vid

The Wednesdoy evening semce of Compline is n¢)w well established ond 15 an
enjoyoble short se￿e to end Ihe day. Thank you lo Susan Holdham for

Af the starl of the year. Ihe Sunday 9 am famli y Euchartst continued to be a
vibranl sermce. witti around I ￿ attending each week, slightly more children
Ihan adults. The l 0.30 Sung Eucharist servlce was dso busy. Usual￿ around 60
attendees. The Thursday moming Eucharist h05 had a smal but very ￿gUlar
congregolion loo.
The pattem of Sunday worship changed durtng Ihe year so thot Ihe 9.Cl) and
10.30 services were combined. wtth 5peciol provision for fomiknes and young
people in the hall m05t Sunday5 arKJ on a&age euchorist in church on one
Sunday each month. Everyone comes together for communion and the f￿01
hymn. prayer5 and notices. followed by coffee orKI bt5cuits in the hall.
Sundoy evening Services also chonged so thal a variety of worship could be
offered. for example a heofmg service on Ihe fi￿1 Sunday of the month and
occasional J¢JzL Vespets.
These changes hcjve been very well received ond the hcTd work from o
clergy team ond Red Balloon to suppcwt Ihi5 new pctheTn of worship is hugely
appreciated.

The Fabric committee met regvlarty thring 3Y23 and provided advice and
support on a number of matters, for which l om very grateful. In 2021. an
expression of inlerest was submitted to Ihe Heritage Lottery FurKI IHLF) to
reorder Christ ChLKch. make it greener and oble lo be used more by the
community. The HLF repfied saying Ihat Ihe pcy￿h was rK>t being invited lo
submit a Rovnd I bid. which was a huge d￿aPPointment. The expression of
interest had been for a wbstantial amount and Ihe HLF sloted Ihe reason for
their deciwon was
. because the proposal Is unlikelyto sbDngly meet our
mandatory outcome fo a wider range of people in hwylage. For an application
of this slze, there would need fo be MO￿ adivity and CknpreSental￿ oflha new
audi&ntss that would be engagrf. A new expression of interest 5ubmi5sion fhot 15
smamer and more focused will be submitted in 2024. The Christ Church bull ding
remoins on the ot-risk register and the bel lower. in porticvlar. continues to
deteriorate and 15 cause for concem.
The heating is operating al less than half power. so it can be very chilly. The
Oasis church of Seventh Doy Advenlists had been renting Christ Church for
their services on Salvrdoys since 2020. This ha5 been a useful source of income
and enobled us lo build links with a church very cfifferent from our own. Sadty.
the inodequale winter heating led Ihem to erKI Iheir agreement in October
and move to altemalive Fwnise5.
Oplions to provide better. gyeener heating have been inVeSt￿aoled in detail
but none proved wacltcal and investigation5 continue. It seems like￿ the boiler

disoppiinting from on environmenlal perSpecI￿Ve Ixjl be very welcome for
the congregation now used to wearing big coats in winter.
A large number of minor works and improvements hove been undertaken: for
example. clearing gutte￿. removing pigeons from the bell lower and deep
cleaning. repair of broken pews. Akjn Dowe￿ has done many of the minor
repairs or ovw5een othets ond his hdp is invakjable. We are very grateful for
the omoing new allar frontal and kneel￿5 funded by the Sunlèy bequest. Ann
Come, our Sacristan. has organised significonl repairs and refLKbishmenl to the
silverware. ￿nens, vestments. etc. Ihal hove been in dire need of some cfJe
and attention. and we are very graleful.
There were fvrfo mojor security issues. First. Iwo people took up residence in the
South Porch lowords Ihe end of winter. INhile nilially our ￿mPathi&S lended to
be with the homeless n cold weather. ther thjg dealing became o cause for
concem to the local police who asked us to evict them in May. Huge thanks to
Folher James and Nea Hepworlh who had the unenviable task of clearing
some extremely Un￿e05￿￿t refuse. Better security for the 50Uth porch doorwas
subsequentty installed.
In Ihe eady hou￿ of December l O. Christ Church was bfoken nto by 2 men who
look the office safe. This contained o few hundred pounds from recent
colleclions. inckjding the Chislingle service coleclion in aid of fhe Childrens.
Society. A Just Giving appeal raised £2.520 for this charity and it was
hearlwuming lo read Ihe messages of svpp¢￿1 from our local commvnity who

cleorfy hold the church in greot affection. Sadly. the registers of baptisms.
maniages and burials Ihal were dso in the safe hove not been fcxjnd. Triis was
one of a series of burglaries of churches in the areo.
steve Davenport and the gardening dub have ensured that the Christ Church
gardens remain a real asset to the whole of Wonstead. a huge thank you to
Sleve and aN the gardening club. arKJ lo everyone who has picked up fitter.
for all your hard work. The gardens cxe eryoyed by huge numbw5. which 15 a
real blessing. though fitter ond minor vondaffsm remain a problem las indeed it
is for the main parkl.
In September. for the Wanstead festivol. a concert was orgonised through
Songhaven. kindly funded by Ctjtrolle Jomieson. This was led by professional
musicians in o relaxed almosphere. 50 ided for those with demenlia or
nevrodrverse. Around l (Xl attended the concert. timed lo coincide with the
flower festival. so the church wos lookwig particuithy beautiful. The tt)eme for
the flower festNoI was hofidoys. arKI Wonstead Church School pupifs werè also
able to sh￿e their flower arrangements. many vi5it¢J5 over the festival ond al
the concert complimented Ihe flowe￿.
A new menlal wellbeing support grcxjp. A Place. led by James Boast, started
on the fiT5t Sunday of each monlh. Monthly fea ond fellowship attemoon5 have
also started and been much opprecioted.
Little Angels Group pr&5chool age chilctren meets on Wednesdays in Christ
Church at a nominol cost. A huge thank you to those who vobnteer ther
support for this grc)vp.
Cleoning at Cknsl CIMJrch is vrKJertaken by o combination of a professional
cleaner and volunteers . The need for church ref￿biShmenl continues to make
the cleoning task cholenging. The opening of the church on Friday momings
hos been succe55fvl in enobling vobnteer cleaner5 to acces5 the church and
have support in this role. 11 is hoped that more volunteer5 will take vp this
opporhjnity which is ifjtal lo the and success of Ihe church on a daily basis.
Christ Church is blessed wilh very many volunleers who conlrrbute o huge
amount. Tho15aid. we do st￿1 need more in just about every area. So a very
heortfell thank you to all the side5people and welcome￿. Ilower arrangers.

appreooted and in 2023 we wetcomed both Chchts5 Uewellyn and Diana
Middlecfjtch to Ihe tecrn os new Lay Le(Klers.
Many Loy Leaders hove 5hc¥ed Ihat Ihey have reolly volued working in a pair
wilh others to lead services and leoming somelhing new each lime from the
other pev50n. Many of the Loy Leader5 lead at both churches ond Ihi5 ha5
proven to be very successful. For those Loy Leaders who worship predominantty
in one of our churches it has been o wcry lo get to know the congregation of
ovr other church better

Lay Leadets led Ihe worship On￿ a monlh up to Sept 1123. The last service was
in August ond it was well attended. Trie pottem of services at CFvist Church
changed al the beginning of September and Ihere 15 now a 9.30om Eucharist
service every Sund¢Jy.
For 3)24 Falher James is keen to get Lay Leaders acr055 the parish involved in
the service5 again al Christ Church. indudng encowaging Lay Leaders to
'hove o go. at preoching using they own reflection5. He is thinkrng of potential
re nlrodvcing a lay led element once a montt) al Chrisl Church. to be pli ofed
in Feb X)24.
At Chist Church the alv syslem has been used to enhonce refiections with
tmoges and music odding a new ond much apweciated dimension to
worship. In 2023 Lay Leade￿ took the opwlunity to look at some significant
anniversaries of people who have made geat conlributi¢MS to our church life
and wotship such 05 Vaugh£￿ Wluiams. Wlliam Byrd and Ctytslopher Wren.

voiced for more EUChcY￿ts.
In July 2023 Bishop Gvli, in response to a request from the Reclor. removed the
special legol status applied lo St Mary's by the former Bishop of Chelmsford
which thus allowed more options for Eucharist services. The general monthty

Alongside our Sundoy Services we hove continved to enjoy the office of
Compfine every Wednesday o18pm. Thi5 is a short 15 minutes service which
offers an opporhjnity for a re boot dwing the midde of the week. Primarily. Ihis
Is led by Susan Holdham. and other Loy Leaders fill in when she ts away. 11 is
held every Wednesdoy except Ihe week tJfter Christmas and has a smdl
dedicated following.
Father James has procknced a Lay Leaders newsletter lermly. which ha5 been
helpful.
The Lay Leaders across the F)(xsh cxe committed to helping the Reclor and the
rest of our clergy team develop the spiriknl fife of our pcri%h. We look foward
to working more actively WFlh Ihe clergy teom in Ihe folowing years.

Little Angels. The &idge Youth Club and Junior Ch￿Ch have continued to meet
throughout trie year. with the ftJmer two organtsations meeting principally in
term lime. AM Ihree organisalions have been run by the Red Balloon
Foundation and we ￿ grateful lo the Wanstead Cottages Trusl for hjnding
this important work. The level of provision for our young people has remained
51eady throughout trie year. although attendance h05 been mixed.
At The Plige. certain evenls. lTri e ovemight trip to o CMstian youtti festival
ond the Christmas outing. proved very popuky. Weekfy attendance has been
mixed. bul a core group remain and Youlh Alpho ha5 been njnning. which has
provoked interesting questions and good feedback.
Litlle Angels has suffered somewhat from compelition from other loddlers,
groups in the locolity and nUrnb￿ are signÈficanlly down from the post<ovid

service pattem over the summer 0150 reqvwed chonges. and ttie break-in
suffered in December meant we needed lo odapt again and njn the service
from the Soulh door rather than the Norlh. From gr*ting the congregation and
handing out hymn book5. to taking round the colection plate. and inviting the
congregation lo communion. trwe cre a numbw of jobs which need doing
every week to ensLKe the service wns smoothly. We are afvoys short of
volunteer5 to help with Ihese Straightforward but importanl lasks. and would

band of willing volvnteer5 provide all the refreshments includng delicious
homemode cakes and trea15 and our emphasis rs placed on socialising with
the guest5. Feedback from Ihose who attend is Ihot they really enjoy the time

2023 at Wansteod ChLKch School began with an Ofsled inspection. which was
very successful arKI very complimentary of the excellent work of the school.
The inspeclion team praised the school's strong sense of commvnity. how
ombittous leaders are for the children ond how children are of their

we were delighted to be a p(xl of. The firsl was when Bishop Gvli visiled
Wansteod in March. The whole school walked with her to St Mary's Church
where the school's Worship Council chli dren led a fantastic 5eprfice. Bishop Gu
was particul¢Jly impressed wilh Ihe chli dren's wonderful singing. The second
was when the Bishop of M(Y5abit in Kenyo visited Wan5tead with his wife. They
could not bef￿ve how talented and weicoming our chldren were because
they had leamt a song to sing to Ihem in Swahilil

Our prestigious Tom Cury Award continued to be awarded on a termly basi5
in 2023. with Leopold. SivvrK). Phoebe. Lottie. Alice and Lucas being worthy
winner5 in 2023. We ￿trOdUCed a new aw(￿d. Afva's Rainbow Award. in
memory of Alva Fowler. a Wonslead Church School pupil who died in 2020.
Alva was kind. frÉendly and brave ar￿ Ihe new award was presenled to one

first Alva's Rainbow Award w05 Holy. Afva's best friend.
Wanslead Church School's cbJb provision continues to go from strength to

stil come from our planned grvers through Ihe Planned Givng Scheme IPGS)

support us in this way: without these regvlcygivers. we would have faced o very
difficult finoncial year.
We continue to encourage givers to donate using trie Plonned Giving Scheme
os this hugely reduces the admini5trotive lime and costs for us and allows us to
budget better for the year.
All Ihe donalion5 Ihcrf were grfl aided erKJbled the PCC to reclatm £23.119 from
Ihe Inland Revenue for 2023. We have been aided by the rvle which enables
