Trustee’s Report
The trustees are pleased to present their annual report together with the financial statements of the charity for the year ending 31 December 2021.
The financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011 and the Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (effective 1 January 2015)
Objectives and Activities
The objects of the Group are to promote the objects of the Riding for the Disabled Association incorporating Carriage Driving (Company no 5010395) a charity registered under Charity number 244108 by providing disabled people with the opportunity to ride and/or to carriage drive to benefit their health and wellbeing in the Pencoed area.
We provide weekly riding sessions to young people giving them the opportunity to interact with ponies, gain riding skills and work towards awards and competitions in riding.
Public Benefit
In accordance with Section 4 (6) of the Charities Act 2006 and the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008, the Trustees of the charity have regarded the guidance on public benefit issued by the Charity Commission. The Trustees consider this guidance at their annual general meeting and when planning their activities for the year.

Review of Activities
The Mount Pleasant Group RDA currently meet every Monday - Thursday and Saturday mornings. The team of volunteers provide riding, groundwork and riding simulator sessions working with up to 40 young people each week. Our young people have a range of physical and learning difficulties and our sessions allow them the opportunity to ride in an appropriate environment.
The group continually has a waiting list of new riders waiting to join regular sessions. Some of our riders are often unable to attend at short notice through illness, those on the waiting list are able to ‘stand-by’ and attend sporadically until a permanent place becomes available.
The Group is supported by a team of volunteers who assist in sessions and in fund raising activities. Some volunteers are working towards their Duke of Edinburgh Award and the group are looking for ways to acknowledge the volunteering completed by volunteers, especially encouraging younger volunteers to continue to engage in volunteering.
At the beginning of the Covid 19 Pandemic RDA sessions were put on hold. Gradually, as certain restrictions were lifted, groundwork sessions were permitted. These took place following the Covid regulations of mask wearing and keeping a 2m distance. During this time we made a grant application for a Mechanical Horse to enable us to return to riding sessions within the Covid regulations. The grant application was successful allowing us to take delivery of a Mechanical Horse and resume riding sessions.
As restrictions eased, riding sessions were permitted to return.
Achievements
During the year we expanded our sessions to include support for local schools and we offer private riding sessions every weekday afternoon.
Riders have completed proficiency tests in both riding and stable management for Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3.
Riders have taken part in the Endurance league competition, organised by RDA National Office.
6 riders attended the South Wales regional qualifiers and qualified for the National championships.

All riders attending the National Championships were placed in their respective classes. Three riders attained Class Champion status and one of our volunteers won the award for Best Leader of the Championships.
Financial Position
The principal sources of funds for the charity are voluntary income, income from donations and fundraising events. The charity aims to hold two such events each year to raise both funds and the profile of the organisation in the local area. During the year, the charity organised two successful fundraising events. The charity had a net surplus of £6,296 in the year.
Reserves
The Trustees have agreed to keep an unrestricted level of funds to cover any emergency costs of treatment and stabling of the ponies used for riding sessions. In setting this figure, due regard has been given to reasonable vet fees and feed levels. Plus the committee is well aware that our ponies are not getting any younger and at sometime soon we may well need to purchase 2 or 3 ponies therefore sufficient funds are held to enable us to quickly make these purchases.
The Trustees have decided this figure should be in the region of £3,000 per pony plus £2,000 for core running costs. At the end of the financial year, the reserves held were over this figure, in anticipation of additional cost during the coming year.
