## **Introduction from the Minister**
There is a verse often read at Christmastime in the book of the Prophet Isaiah, , which begins, “Comfort ye, comfort ye, my people, says the Lord”. This prophecy came to Israel after many years of struggle and exile and it brought them a sense of consolation, comfort as God’s reassuring presence rather than, say, the comfort of a new 3-piece suite or a warm fire. In 2023, many are experiencing great struggle and exile of one kind or another. Buying basics, let alone new furniture is hard with the state of the economy and the cost of living. Heating our homes has been more and more expensive in recent months. And for some, even the language of home is difficult, be that for Ukrainian’s fleeing the war in their home country or the many homeless who have found their way to Wesley since last summer.
Wesley is not immune to the increasing costs. The impact may not be so drastic in the short term as it can be for the smaller churches in our circuit, but it is no less real. Once again in these reports you will see the financial realities laid out for us by Anita in careful detail, and once again these represent both generosity and challenge. Once again, we have been able to give substantial sums to charitable causes, including to support the community of our partner church in Mbare, Zimbabwe. However, as Jo Lambourne and Anita note we have lost several members who had previously contributed to the offerings. Though numbers have declined again, I am hopeful that in the coming few weeks we can welcome some of our young people into membership.
If you happen to notice in one of the pictures in the youth group report below that I am wearing a hat, scarf and gloves in the downstairs coffee bar, it is not because it was cold, but a game we were playing. Nevertheless, we are all grateful for the improvements to heating that are being made in the building. New radiators have appeared to upgrade the old ones, and we have been able to provide for some very needy people a ‘warm space’, helped by the funding you will see reported below. Well done to members of the management team for seeing those upgrades through, and to the volunteers who have given so much time and prayer to helping.
There is so much more encouragement to read below, and I urge you to linger over the various reports and appreciate the wide range of ministry and activity that we are involved with. There is so much that we can be thankful for; even in unexpected places there are blessings to find. I am often reminded how relatively ‘comfortable’ (in the warm fire sense) life can be, at least for many of us, and yet to be able to give back something, or help people who are struggling is a great privilege which God gives us. Though needs around us certainly can throw up challenges for us, discipleship, and a ‘Methodist way of life’ (which we will discuss at the ACM), leads us, “each others’ needs to prefer for it is Christ we’re serving” ( _The Servant King, G.Kendrick)._
Together we have much to celebrate, and much yet to do. So once again, I commend these reports to you and invite you with me to give glory of God for what he is doing in and through us and our church.

## **Pastoral Report**
The membership figure reported to the Methodist Church for their statistical report as of 1[st] November 2022 stood at 115. However, since that date, two of our long-standing members have died, so our current membership is 113. Life is gradually returning to some sort of normality since the Covid pandemic, but as far as our church life is concerned, we are still experiencing lower numbers at Sunday worship than in the past. This is partly due to our ageing congregation of course and it is good to know that we still have a regular small attendance at our weekly Zoom sessions on Sunday mornings. In fact, one of our previous members, who is now well into her nineties, regularly joins us from her family home in France.
Our Annual Membership Tickets were distributed just before Christmas by our stalwart band of Pastoral Links. As always, I encourage them to use this opportunity to have
conversations with those on their Pastoral Lists, particularly those who have not been attending worship for a long while. It is important to keep our lists updated in order that they portray an honest snapshot of the members and adherents at Saltash Wesley.
As always, Rev Jonathan and I have been so grateful for the network of pastoral care provided throughout the year, throughout all aspects of our church life. Although our Pastoral Links are the mainstay of our care system, each one of us have opportunities to support each other through the good times and the more difficult ones. We aim to be a loving, caring church community and are pleased to have welcomed several new folk recently into our fellowship.

## **9:15 AM - services 2022-23**
We relaunched ‘live’ worship in January 2022, with a pattern of themed services, and approximately alternate weeks of recorded and band led worship for all ages. Themes over the past year have included looking at the ‘In-Between Time’ from Easter to Pentecost with Bible Society materials, studying the book of James, making our way through the Sermon on the Mount and recently the book of Esther. Acting out the story of Esther.
Some services have a short sermon, sometimes there are discussions, we’ve done crafts together, put on dramas and all sorts of other things. The service is usually preceded with a bacon sandwich breakfast, but we’re not always at Wesley.
Around once a quarter we meet at Landrake, and we have regularly met at Downderry for ‘Church on the Beach’ or got out in the fresh air for ‘Church on a walk’. We also are glad to meet with 1030 regulars for All Church Together services. All in all, we hope to bring the Bible to life, grapple with some of the difficult bits and grow closer to Jesus.

## **Café Church**
Since the last Annual Church Meeting Café Church has taken place at 5 p.m. on the 2[nd] Sunday of each month except August and December, when it had to be cancelled because of the icy conditions.
We have had guests on 8 occasions, and they have either given us a presentation or been interviewed. They were: Sarah Redford of the Salvation Army; Rev Richard Magrath, Priest-in-Charge of the Anglican Saltash Team Ministry; Geoffrey Archer, our organ tuner, and his wife Merril and friend Bernard, who played the organ; our own Judith Allen who spoke about the Bible Reading Fellowship; Nikki Phillips, the treasurer of the Friends of Matthew Rusike Children’s Home; Rev Andy Chislett-McDonald, Superintendent Minister of the Plymouth and Devonport Circuit; Dave Wood, guitarist and singer; John Naismith of the charity Jeremiah’s Journey.
In addition, on Palm Sunday in April we had a Taizé style service, and on November 11[th] we had readings about answers to prayer in the 2[nd] World War and talks about countries suffering from warfare at the present time.

## **Wesley Community Coffee Shop and Warm Spaces**
The Wesley Coffee shop is open to the whole of our local community Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings from 10.00 am to 12 noon and is committed to serving Fairtrade products. We source our filter coffee and tea from Indigo Coffee, who only choose Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance certified products and who are an ethical, sustainable and carbon neutral supplier. Other products have been sourced from our Traidcraft outlet within our coffee shop area.
Hot soup and roll lunch
It became apparent throughout last summer and the early autumn that owing to global increased energy prices and the cost-of-living crisis the 2022-23 winter would be a difficult one for many. As a result of publicity on national media and requests by the Methodist Church at a national level it was agreed by the Church Stewards that we should respond to the appeal for churches to provide warm welcoming spaces. After some discussions with other local community groups, it was agreed to extend our Coffee Shop opening hours on a Tuesday and Wednesday until 4.00 pm and to provide hot healthy nutritious soup and a warm crusty roll as part of our Warm Spaces project. This is run on a pay as you are able basis.
We have been able to work in partnership with the Saltash Foodbank to whom we are most grateful for the provision of fresh vegetables and our local Co-operative store via the Real Junk Food Project who have been able to provide surplus bread and rolls thus avoiding food waste. We were also very thankful to receive a grant from National Grid via Local Giving towards our increased energy costs as a result of the extended opening hours without which our project may not have been able to proceed. The soup lunches have been well supported by both our congregation and many in our community who may otherwise be lonely and in need.

It is also worth mentioning that prior to June 2022, we had not had any incidents of homelessness for several years. The situation is now escalating as we are seeing new people in crisis entering our community coffee shop every week and we have in fact supported nine homeless persons over the last 6 months, some for several weeks, with cooked breakfast being provided.
We would not be able to run our coffee shop or the Warm Spaces project without the support of our loyal team of volunteers to whom we are most grateful. If you would be able to spare 2½ hours of you time, once a month to help, it would be most welcome.
Please support our coffee shop so it can continue to reach out and welcome the whole of our Saltash community into our church building. This is especially valuable to disadvantaged members of society including those who are currently homeless, lonely or in need and is an important part of our Church’s mission or if you want some quiet time the church is open throughout the morning.

## **Youth Group**
The Youth group meet every Tuesday evening during termtime, 6 – 7:30 PM. We use the Sports Hall for plying various sports and share a meal with small group discussion/Bible study time in the coffee bar. We have a small team of dedicated helpers who are on a rota system, with nine young people on the register. We are currently using some great resources from ‘Urban Saints’ exploring the theme of identity. Our aims as a youth group – to help the young people become aware of God as revealed in Jesus Christ, growing together, sharing food and fellowship.

## **Holiday Club**
We have been working in partnership with the Time2Move holiday Club initiative through Cornwall Council. This aims to provide a limited number of spaces completely free, to children who are eligible for free school meals, aged 4 – 11 years. This year we have had an Easter, Summer holiday and Christmas Kids Clubs, with an average of 40 children attending per session. This is a great way to build links with our local community and help to support local families in need. At each Kids Club we provide sports activities, games, arts and crafts, a hot nutritious meal for lunch, stories and singing, all with a Christian based story and theme. Thank you to our amazing Children’s work team for all that they do!

## **Little Fishes – Baby and Toddler group**
The baby and toddler group, re- started in September 2021, continues to go from strength to strength, in fact it is going swimmingly! Attendance averages twenty children with their accompanying parents/carers/ grandparents, and over 90 families have registered with, and attended, this group over the last 18 months. It has been lovely to watch friendship groups develop and the network of support within the group is very special.
Little Fishes – Tuesday mornings
The success of this group would not have been achieved without the support of so many from Wesley, the Monday evening Table Tennis group for putting out the tables, chairs and playmats, the early morning ‘Tea and Toast’ team before the session, the fruit, snacks and drinks helpers during the sessions, not forgetting the team themselves for running the sessions. The inclusion of Rev. Jonathan within the team is a great blessing for us all.
The team have been very encouraged by our involvement with the ‘Little Fishes’ group and pray that God will lead us on, providing opportunity for our Christian witness along the way.

## **Wednesday Morning Prayers**
10 individuals or couples pray at home every Wednesday morning between 8.30 and 9.00 (or as near to that time as they can). Every Tuesday an email is circulated suggesting prayer topics, starting with Wesley and the Circuit, going on to national and international situations, and ending with names of individuals in particular need of our prayers. If you would like to join us please let me know, and if you would like us to pray for you or someone else please contact me.

## **Management Report**
The Management team has been working very hard this year trying to keep the building in a good state. Anita and Roger Thompson work well looking after our finances and the rotas. There have just been two heaters installed in the foyer and the showers are being refurbished. We are grateful to Marguerite Smith for the painting she has done in the building.
We are waiting for rendering on the side of the Church to be done.
Most of the management team are well over 70 and some over 80, so we need some younger men or women to help.
If this is not rectified it means, we will have to start paying for all the work that is being done voluntarily!

## **Mbare/Saltash partnership**
The committee continues to meet bi-monthly to share and publish news from Mbare, to promote the links between Saltash Wesley and Mbare Methodist Church, to organise the monthly prayers, to arrange fundraising events and to send much-needed help to Zimbabwe.

Several of our members keep in touch with those at Mbare through emails and WhatsApp. The news from Zimbabwe has been bad with shortages of food, medical care, electricity supply and water and turmoil in advance of the elections in July. The faith of the Methodist congregation in Mbare, however, remains strong.
In order to be able to send money for special help for those in most need three times a year, we have organised a few fund-raising events during the year, and these have also been most enjoyable social occasions. In addition, many members make regular generous donations, particularly for school fees for children who otherwise wouldn’t receive an education. We also sent money for food parcels just before Christmas from the proceeds of the sales of calendars devised and arranged by Rev Jonathan. We receive reports back from Mbare on how the money has been used.
We also support the Matthew Rusike Children’s Home in Harare, the main fund-raiser for this being the Christmas Card in the foyer.
We are now eagerly looking forward to a visit from 10 members of Mbare, including the minister and his wife, in May. The main hurdle for the visit is for them to obtain visas from the British Government. We have sent them several documents to help with this, including a letter from MP Sheryll Murray. We will know by the middle of this month whether they have been successful.

## **Wesley Table Tennis**
Table Tennis continues to meet every Monday in the Sports Hall from 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm. The club has four tables with an average of 8 people attending each week. We break for refreshments and a chat and new members are always welcome. We hope that Anne Nicholas will soon be back with us and able to play again after her injury.

## **PALS. (Pleasure and Leisure Society)**
PALS continues to meet fortnightly with a varied programme of interesting and fun activities including meals, theatre visits, talks, and games. We recently led a Songs of Praise Sunday service. We usually are about 20 people and welcome new members.

## **Traidcraft Shop**
The sales from the Traidcraft shop has gradually decreased during and since the pandemic and I am very sad to report that I have had confirmation of the fact that Traidcraft plc is no longer trading. I have been managing the Traidcraft shop on behalf of the church since 2010 with the help of many dedicated supporters and I thank you all for that. The work has kept my spirits up during a very difficult time, thank God for that.
Transform Trade (previously Traidcraft Exchange)has stepped up to the mark and they say ‘Our name change is a promise to keep standing up against an unjust and broken system, fighting for radical change with a global community, for a world where trade values people more than profit.’ I pray that we can support that, Kirsten Riches
## **Thursday Bible Study**
One of several house groups and Bible studies that run at the church, our Thursday morning online (at the moment) Bible study continues with good attendance. We are working our way through the Acts of the Apostles, and though we have now moved back to twice per month (1[st] and 3[rd] Thursdays), rather than weekly, we continue to be surprised and delighted at how much we can find to discuss in the stories of the first Christian churches. All are welcome, and you will find the Zoom links often on the weekly notices, or if not ask at the office and Joanna will be able to send you details. We meet from 10-11.30am.

## **TREASURER’S REPORT ANNUAL CHURCH MEETING 13 MARCH 2022**
## **Accounts year ended 31 August 2022**
The Saltash Wesley Church General accounts for the year ended 31 August 2022 were presented to the Church Council Meeting in October 2022. The accounts subsequently combined with those for the internal organisations were presented at the February 2023 meeting and have been agreed by Church Council. The accounting records and the combined Standard Form of Accounts have now been audited by David Trill and agreed. Again my thanks to David for his speedy but thorough review of the records and also my thanks to all those who have checked the accounts of the internal organisations.
The majority of the internal organisation figures are now shown as designated accounts on the Standard Form of Accounts in order to reflect accurate total income and expenditure figures. The accounts for the Saltash/Mbare Partnership and the Music Foundation which are restricted funds have remained outside these figures and have been shown in the restricted organisations summary.
I am pleased to report that offerings emerged at **£39,922** compared to £39,910 in the previous year, an increase of **£12** . Please bear in mind that it was not possible to hold services at Wesley for a considerable number of weeks in the previous year. However, during the past year we lost several members for various reasons, who have in the past generously contributed to our offerings and this will have a continuing impact in the current year.
Our room hiring amounted to **£19,485** compared to only **£7,205** in the previous year, i.e. an increase of **£12,280** as we started to recover from the pandemic.
Income received for our Church Families Worker for the year amounted to **£27,068** which is after repaying **£2,667** to the District representing one-third of the grant originally received. **£10,000** was received from the Circuit which was two-thirds of the amount originally promised owing to the fact that Chris Clark regrettably departed for pastures new at the end of April 2022.
Gift Day receipts amounted to **£5,320** from individuals and **£2,152** from internal organisations, a total of **£7,472,** down on the 2021 figure of **£14,216** when two Gift Days were held as it was not possible to hold any Gift Day in 2020 owing to periods of lockdown.
Sundry donations amounted to **£2,181** compared to **£1,640** in 2021. Included under this heading is the kind donation of **£1,252** being the cost of the defibrillator for which we are most grateful. We were also grateful for the generous bequest of **£10,000** under the terms of Patricia Lewis’s Will which accounts for the large increase in the amounts received from bequests and funerals which totalled **£11,163** compared to **£105** in the previous year. It was possible to slowly resume some of our church activities following the pandemic and it was good to see that our Table Top sales restarted in October 2021, which generated a contribution of **£800** to the general account **£400** to the Mbare account and a further **£200** in charitable donations. After a quiet restart in September 2021, weekday coffee mornings have gathered momentum and income of **£2,190** was received during the year **.**
Income from investments was up by **£541** and amounted to **£5,419,** with **£5,071** being received from investments via Brewin Dolphin, **£347** from TMCP and **£1** bank interest!
The Gift Aid Tax reclaim amounted to **£13,134** and was down by **£148** on the previous year when **£13,282** was received.
The solar power pay-back received amounted to **£4,055** and was up by **£59** from the previous year and the initial capital outlay has certainly paid dividends in view of the current record high energy prices.
Turning to expenses, our major expense was the Circuit assessment which amounted to **£59,313** compared to **£57,652** in 2021 an increase of **£1,661.**
The second largest outlay was for our Children’s and Families Worker and amounted to **£20,818,** down by £9,380 as Chris Clark was only with us for 8 months of the 2021/22 financial year.
Utilities totalled only **£4,297** being water rates **£649** (2021 - £175), electricity **£2,103** (2021 - £582) and gas **£1,545** (2021 - £745) overall an increase of **£2,795,** This was however lower than in 2019 when the total cost of utilities was **£5,063.**
Building maintenance totalled only **£1,568** (2021 - £1,173,) which included repairs to the foyer roof, the rendering of the corner exterior wall and a deposit of **£334** for the replacement foyer window **.**
Equipment additions and repairs totalled **£10,230** (£6,240 – 2021). The major items included in the expenditure were **£1,252** for the defibrillator, **£4,017** for the new cooker and fitting **, £1,763** on the media computer upgrades and **£1,715** on boiler servicing and repairs, **£780** for the gas interlocker and **£470** on 4 new Go-Pak Tables.
Telephone costs emerged at **£1,441** compared to **£1,427** in the previous year, but should reduce in the future, as most of our calls are now included in our telephone and broadband rental contract following the change from BT to Virgin Media.
The cost of organ and piano repairs and tuning emerged at **£2,874** an increase of **£2,348** which was necessitated by the extensive repairs required to the organ following the long periods of lock down when there was very little heating in the church causing mould to accumulate in the chamber.
We are still managing to cover the cleaning with voluntary help for which we are most grateful saving **£546** compared to the cost in 2021 and **£1,571** in 2020).
Shell and Youth Club has not re-opened in its previous form following the pandemic thus the costs of the Shell and Youth Club worker have reduced the expenditure. However, Youth Alpha has recommenced in a slightly different format and is also managing well with voluntary help.
Total income for the year ended 31 August 2022 as disclosed in the Standard Form of Accounts which include the internal organisations amounts to **£140,594** and expenses amount to **£126,497,** resulting in the overall surplus of **£14,097** for the year to 31 August 2022 compared to the deficit of **£8,659** in the previous year.
The bank and cash balances held locally as at 31 August 2022 amounted to **£53,952** compared to **£39,254** at the end of the previous accounting period.
Turning to our investments the valuation of the Henwood bequest as at 31 August amounted to **£226,706** compared to **£246,047** in August 2021, a fall of **£19,341** as a result of the global economic crisis. The amount held by the Trustees for Methodist Church purposes as at 31 August 2022 amounted to **£13,411** in Endowment Funds (2021 - £14,420) and **£25,750** (2021 -£27,748) in Model Trust Funds. Therefore total funds (including bank and cash balances and those held in restricted funds) amounted to **£329,371** as at 31 August 2022 compared to £329,687 in 2021, a decrease of **£316,** which comprises **£20,349** reduction in investments less the surplus on the income and expenditure account of **£14,097** , the Mbare account of **£5,933** and **£3** accumulated income.
Separately I have prepared a schedule of donations made to various charities during the year ended 31 August 2022 which totalled **£12,385** including those made to our partner church in Mbare. In addition **£5,632** was raised towards the proposed visit by members of our partner church in Mbare.
## **Current position.**
I have recently prepared a draft income and expenditure account for the six months to 28 February 2023 for the General account, which disclosed total income of £ **44,278** and expenses of **£53,452** resulting in a net deficit for first half of the year of **£9,174.** This does however include the quarterly assessment of
**£12,765** paid in advance to 31 May 2023. It is however difficult to compare figures with the previous year, because of the grants received and expenditure incurred for our Children’s and Families’ Worker which are no longer applicable and amounts paid for the Circuit which will be recovered before the end of the accounting period. Our financial situation at the end of February through to the end of May annually is usually the worst time in the year, so I am not unduly concerned at present as it should recover by 31 August 2023 once the Gift Aid tax reclaim has been made.
We have been very fortunate and are most grateful to receive a grant from National Grid, via Local Giving towards the additional costs of energy required to open our Church for longer hours under the Warm Welcoming Safe Spaces project.
Finally, I would like to sincerely thank all our Church family not only for their tremendous generosity and commitment both spiritually, practically and financially to the continuing work at Wesley, in our town community and the wider Circuit but also for their ongoing financial assistance to the charities supported each year.
