## TRUSTEES' REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST MARCH 2022 (CONTINUED)

## Objectives and aims

The objectives and aims of the Charity are:

1. Toraise funds for the management, upkeep and promotion of an institution known as The Unique Home in India. The aim of that institution is to provide moral, social, cultural and economic uplift ofunwanted, orphaned and abandoned female children without distinction of caste, creed or religion.

2. To raise awareness of the institution known as The Unique Home in India so that funding and aid are donated directly to that institution.

Each year the trustees review the activities of the charity in order to ensure that they continue to reflect the objectives set out in the trust deed. In carrying out this review the trustees have considered the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit and, in particular, its supplementary guidance on the prevention or relief of poverty for the public benefit and the draft guidance on public benefit and moral or ethical belief systems.

It is the trustees' opinion that the operation of the Charity in its present form is for the public benefit under the principles set out in the Charity Commission guidance. The work of the trust gives rise to public benefit by providing support for The Unique Home in India which in turn provides free accommodation, sustenance, moral guidance and support for unwanted, orphaned and abandoned female children in India. The girls are also afforded the opportunity to attain high educational standards. Testament to this is the success of two of the older girls who have been in long term care at Unique Home. One of whom attained a Masters Degree at College in Jalandhar, whilst the other studied at Leeds Beckett University, Leeds UK, and was successful in obtaining a Batchelor of Arts, First Class Honours Degree in July 2018. Both girls are now continuing their studies in Canada.

## Volunteers

The charity is grateful for the efforts of its volunteers who are involved in raising funds and running the charity. In previous years, volunteer’s annual efforts amounted to approximately 500 hours in total. It has always proved difficult to attribute in an economic value, this contribution to the charity. However, because of circumstances beyond the control of the charity which curtailed fundraising campaigns, volunteer hours have reduced approximately by half. The trustees, themselves volunteers, ensure that best value is derived from the effects of all volunteers.

## Achievement and performance

The charity has continued to raise it's income through donations. The pandemic still had an impact on some planned events.

The direct debit contributions have remained steady and this has helped the reserves of the charity.

The trustees have been visiting the home and have maintained updates along with an ongoing dialogue in respect of progress the home has made with the building work detailed on the future developments section.

The Charity has continued to be used in an advisory capacity by individuals and small groups of supporters from across the globe who are looking to, plan or hold fundraising activities either for the Charity direct or the Home itself. This in addition to the constant stream of email enquiries received by the charity via their website from individuals wishing to visit or volunteer at the Home, donate or on occasions, to enquire about adopting a child from the Home.

## Achievement and performance (Continued)

The Home’s profile on Facebook and with access to Twitter benefits both the Home and Charity. The Cake and Candles Campaign (is now supported globally) bringing joy to the Children every 24 April. The Home treats this day, as the birthday for the orphaned children. The support was world-wide and in New Zealand in particular.

There was also (National awards and International recognition) for Bibi Prakash Kaur, (the Founder of, and present Managing Trustee of Unique Home)

## Reserves Policy

Funds are collected through voluntary donations and it is this income that funds the work of the charity.

The net incoming resources for the year amounted to £30,101, which lifted the general reserves at the end of the financial year to £138,633.

With regard to those general reserves, a policy has been established whereby the unrestricted funds not committed or invested in tangible fixed assets, the free reserves, held by the charity should be between 12 and 24 months of the resources expended annually. This equates to £15,000 to £30,000 in free reserves. It is felt that, at this level, it would be possible to continue the current activities of the charity in the event of a significant drop in donations. This would then give sufficient time to consider how the funding would be replaced or the activities changed.

## Principal Funding Sources

The primary funding source is donations from the charity's supporters. The funds from this source are used to provide phased funding donations to the Unique Home in order to achieve the objectives of the charity.

Overall, the trustees are satisfied with these results and we will endeavour to maintain this level of income in future.

## Future Developments

The Charity's website and social media sites continue to be reviewed with the intention of updating the format and content, when and if deemed appropriate.

With the main building of the complex being completed, concentration was directed towards the construction of a small 4 bedded detached sickness/isolation suite adjacent to the main building. This is now complete. Further plans to build a 3 storey building are at an early stage which will be used to accommodate older girls, an education suite and a storage area. The Charity will ensure that this work receives appropriate financial support.

The trustees will be planning to visit the home in the next six months subject to the pandemic.

The aim this year is to consolidate and work towards having more live events.
