Edmonton Methodist Church Annual Report for Year Ended 31 August 2023

We are a diverse community of people originating from many different countries. The annual statistical return in October 2023 showed that we had 310 members. There are just over 800 people on the church’s community roll.

We have come together in response to our Christian calling. We strongly believe that our unity in Jesus Christ is a powerful Christian testimony as we endeavour to serve the present age. Thus, we are committed to contributing to the wellbeing of each other through the following mission statement:

Our Mission Statement

Affirming our calling to ‘serve the present age’ through our faith and discipleship in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Be an inclusive community that cherishes the diversity of talents, culture, race, age and gender. We seek to work in partnership with other churches through existing or new ecumenical mission agencies in our local area.

Learn to give special attention to the spiritual, social and moral well-being of all who are part of our church according to their need and circumstances.

Enable our members to advance issues of God’s mission, through social justice and peace, while advocating policies that protect the environment.

Our Planned Future Community-Oriented Projects

It is our strong expectation that, the rebuilding of our church will enable us to be more practical in carrying out our motto: ‘Serving God’s people in the Community and in the Church’. Consequently, after some in-depth consultations in our local community, the following activities and community projects will be our immediate objectives:

Aims and Purposes

Edmonton Methodist Church Council has authority and oversight of the Church, including the management of its property and finance and, crucially, its pastoral care of members and friends. Its responsibilities include the setting of our aims and objectives and governance including finance, property and health and safety.

Our Primary Purposes are:

  1. The provision of regular public acts of worship open to members of the church and nonmembers alike.

  2. The provision of sacred space (a building) for prayer and contemplation.

  3. The teaching of Christian doctrine, principles and practices through sermons, courses and small groups.

  4. 4, Pastoral work, including visiting the sick and bereaved.

Objectives and Activities

The Church Council is committed to enabling as many people as possible to worship at our church and to become part of our church community.

When planning our activities for the year, the Church Council has considered the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit and, in particular, the specific guidance on charities for the advancement of religion. In particular, we try to enable ordinary people to live out their faith as part of our Church through:

Worship and prayer: that is thoughtful, relevant to the situations both of those who attend and of the wider world, rooted in the goodness of God.

Nurture and learning: developing understanding of the gospel and knowledge and trust in Jesus.

Service: providing hospitality to community groups, running groups that are of benefit to the wider community, children and youth work, taking an active interest in the affairs of that community.

Evangelism: promoting the Good News of God in Christ Jesus and encouraging others to consider the way of discipleship alongside Interfaith dialogue.

To facilitate this work it is important that we maintain the fabric of the church buildings and the funds to enable us to do so. We also adhere to and regularly review the Methodist Church’s Safeguarding Policy including Safer Recruitment.

Achievements and Performance

Worship and prayer

Our Sunday morning worship is the principal gathering with average weekly attendance of 150 adults and 25 young people and children. The 10:45am service has one Holy Communion, one all-age worship and two or three preaching services most months that enable people to worship God and follow Jesus, on a cycle of all age worship and more traditional worship too. Again, it has been good to welcome new people in the course of the last year, both those who remain as part of our congregation and those who, new to the area, are seeking out a Christian home.

In addition to the Sunday services there are occasional, festival and other mid-week services particularly in Lent/Holy Week.

As well as our regular services, we enable our community to celebrate and thank God at the milestones of the journey through life. During 2022/2023, we hosted 2 marriage blessings, 12 funerals, 12 baptisms, 4 confirmations and welcomed 12 new members.

Baptism Ministry

The Baptism Ministry team continues to carry out its duties. It involves: getting to know the ( prospective families; arranging for the necessary forms to be filled in; confirming dates with our minister, Revd. Valentin Dedji, and arranging a meeting between the family and Revd.Dedji, in the church vestry or at their home.

During Baptism a candle is lit and the following words are said, “Receive this light for you belong to Christ. Christ is your light and your way. As light is essential to all life and growth, so is Christ to the whole world”. A Bible and certificate are handed to the parents.

Nurture and Learning

Our Sunday Junior Church remains active, with an enthusiastic core of youngsters and appropriate recognised leaders. Our Junior Church and Young People's Fellowship (YPF) make a significant contribution to all-age worship throughout the year. They are also very active in supporting the Circuit at the Sunday Fundays.

Edmonton Methodist Church Junior Church children attendance numbers have been increasing. The leaders have been very dedicated. The children are becoming very vocal during their questioning about what they have learnt in their group. We continue to encourage their spiritual growth.

The children contributed in the Christmas service in December 2022. The children have been very involved in the youth services on the 3 Sunday of each month. We pray that the Lord continue to bless the parents, leaders and children as they grow in their understanding of Christ.

Our Brownie Unit and Guides unit enjoyed another busy and varied year of activities and the Boys’ Brigade Company continues to be a regular part of the church’s life although many of them worship on a Sunday at other churches.

Youth

Our youth continue to make significant contribution to FUSION, formally known as the Young Adult Group (YAG) with the group meeting every last Sunday of the month in our church. This group of young people are growing in knowledge and are eager to develop their personal Christian lives as well as wanting to know how to contribute to their community.

Generation of Disciples (G.O.D), aimed at young adults between the ages of 18 and 30 years meet fortnightly to discuss various themes and topics that impact them as young adults from a biblical perspective. To promote leadership within the group, members of G.O.D. take it in turns to lead on topics.

Fellowship Groups

We have a number of different Fellowship Groups including: Ghanaian Fellowship, Women’s Fellowship, and Men’s Fellowship.

Edmonton Methodist Church Ghanaian Fellowship (GMF)

Edmonton Ghanaian Methodist Fellowship (EGMF) is a welfare organisation, which is part of the Ghanaian Methodist Fellowship, UK, set up within Edmonton Methodist Church.

Aims and Objectives

The aims and objectives for the fellowship continues to be the same, pooling resources together to address the welfare purposes being the core objective.

The Fellowship is managed by an executives which is formally elected by general members through a secret ballot. Elections are held once every 3 years.

Activities.

The Fellowship has engaged in the following activities such as

Membership is only open to registered member of the Edmonton Methodist Church. We have over 60 memberships with 40 active members.

Meetings:

Our meetings are held every 3rd Sunday of the month

It is with great pleasure that we end this year with a united front that has successfully seen us througha period full of events and challenges. The successes chalked would not have been possible without the usual support of you all as stake holders in this noble venture and journey of this wonderful group / Association. On behalf of the entire Association, we the Executives wish to convey to you all our heartfelt recognition of your tireless efforts to help us and is very grateful.

We ask for your continuous support and prayers as we move through another phase of the coming year’s activities.

Women’s Fellowship

We give God all the glory, praise and thanksgiving His grace, mercies, protection, healing and blessings for us during this year.

We continue to support the food hub by members donating food, items, volunteering, distributing, serving and delivering.

Mothering Sunday service was led by the fellowship face to face, members sang , the service was successful.

Women in seven days of prayer, continues throughout the year.

Members continue to play their part in cleaning the church, flowering, supplying refreshments and Sunday school Ministries, welcoming stewards and many others.

Music Ministry

Music has always been an essential part of our worship. From the days of the Old Testament, when “David and the people of Israel were celebrating with all their might before the Lord, with castanets, harps, lyres, timbrels, and cymbals” — 2 Samuel 6:5 (NIV)

Praise God for another fruitful year of ministry! It has been amazing to see how God has been working in both the music and technical worship ministries in church. | have chosen a few key highlights which give some insight into what | have been doing this year.

The last couple of years were very busy for the music ministries since the pandemic, we have never stopped. Putting Jesus first in our lives, lifting up our voices to God the Father with one accord, and becoming invisible within our talents so His message shines brighter. Where the Holy Spirit is active in our life, where we are experiencing God like never before.

At Edmonton Methodist Church ministry we have various arts and music teams. The Music ministry team consists of technicians who operate the visual and audio sound engineering system (4 members) and the main choir, (11 members) and on some occasions a worship team (3 members). Since choir restarted in April 2023 we have gained another 4 members. We have lost 2 dedicated members who the Lord has called home. We are constantly increasing the involvement of our music ministry by inviting, accepting and training anyone who wants to be part of our ministry to keep the church making a joyful noise unto the Lord.

Our worship streams live every Sunday by preachers submitting their order of service to Bro Sean Davis, George Noi-Lartey or Anthony Sarpong in preparation for our Sunday morning service or any other special events.

Our vision was to create an oasis in the middle of people’s busy schedules where they could take a ‘time-out’ and reconnect with God. We have recently created a social media page for the church on Facebook and LinkedIn which at the moment is just for advertisement but in due course we will be streaming live on these sites. We still have our YouTube account which can be used on special occasions. Currently we are using our Zoom account for any special meetings. It also has the function to ‘go live’ via YouTube. Our aim is to invade the airwaves and these sites are only used to let other knows we are here for our local community and for the world to know what is happening within our Ministry at Edmonton.

Music helps gather and centre us, it gives us strength as we lament, assurance in troubled times, joy in times of happiness, and a voice with which to praise our Saviour and our Creator. Our worship at Edmonton is filled with music of all different kinds, providing the soundtrack to our worship each and every Sunday together with live playing of the instrument (keyboard).

We are truly blessed at Edmonton and our music ministry exists to teach us of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the promises inherent in it. It reminds us of the sovereignty of God and all he is capable of doing. We continue to be loyal, positive, patient, flexible, caring, humble and a strong influence on our church.

Service

The church buildings remain extensively used by the local community for various functions such as birthday parties, traditional wedding ceremonies, funeral gatherings. We make our

space available to let to a number of different groups including NOBLE LADIES, Bible College, Ghanaian Community and an Indian Dance tuition group. We continue to provide food for the local food bank. Caring for those in need has long been a way Methodists express and commend their faith. During the course of the year, collection for our Benevolent Fund was used to maintain our support for Action for Children, Methodist Homes, Christian Aid, and Methodist Women in Britain as well as emergency appeals. It is good that these efforts on behalf of others can be combined with opportunities for fellowship and indicates the breadth of our concern for God’s world.

No application was received during that period. That was due to the lockdown which did not allow young people to plan any project.

Most of the regulars before the lockdown have now change to “One-Off”.

One-Off Lettings

Significant numbers coming to use the Hall mainly for Birthdays, Anniversaries, Funeral wakes, Meetings, play rehearsals, subject to limitations imposed by size of the hall.

Shortcomings

Regrettably some activities e.g. A day nursery would not take place due to heating and other problems with the building we could not overcome and size of Hall for Hire.

Evangelism

Through Confirmation and the activities of other groups we have given people an opportunity to discover and grow in faith, The New Year Watch Night Service again allowed over fifty visitors to worship and see in the New Year with us, many of whom we only see on this occasion. Baptism Services have allowed many people who wouldn’t normally attend church to see what church is like, hear about the love of God and hopefully receive a warm welcome.

Wider relationships

The church is part of the Enfield Methodist Circuit. Six members of our church are elected by the church council to be part of its managing body, the Circuit Meeting. Our Minister in Pastoral Charge is an Enfield Circuit Minister and leads worship in Circuit Churches on a regular pattern. We also liaise with the London District of Methodism and wider Methodist Church of Great Britain.

Edmonton Methodist Church is part of the Faith Forum for Enfield. Ordained ministers, lay leaders from different church denominations (Methodist, Evangelical, Baptist and Pentecostal), together with Faith Leaders (Muslims and Jews) belonging to the said Forum, meet regularly on quarterly basis for breakfast meetings. During such meetings, issues related to peace-building in our local communities feature prominently on the agenda. Prayers of mutual support are also offered. We still have contact with the local Rumi Mosque.

Property and Finance

There has been a growing recognition that our existing premises are not ideally fit for purpose, The buildings are what remained after the large adjoining Central Hall was vacated in the late 1960s and subsequently demolished. The present worship area was originally a large hall, and is situated at the rear of the buildings. The other rooms and facilities are also poorly laid out. Moreover, externally, the premises present a very bleak, unwelcoming face to the community that the church is striving to serve.

The seating capacity of the church has been increased by 50 in the last twenty years by the addition of a balcony but we are already running out of space again. We have been exploring various possibilities by which we might be able to undertake the redevelopment of the present premises of the church.

Our Vision: To rebuild our historic church, formerly known as Edmonton Methodist Central Hall, to make it fit for new priorities and challenges of God’s Mission in our local community in this present age.

Our objective is to equip the church’s new building with a number of modern facilities, in order to serve in the best possible ways, the youth, the elderly and the needy in our local community.

We continue to progress with our application for planning permission. We continue to hold meetings and updates with our team of Architects and the London Borough of Enfield Council Planners.

Fundraising events are continuing and donations towards the new building continue to flow in.

Reserves Policy

In line with the Charity Commission and Methodist guidelines, our reserves policy for the General Fund is to hold enough funds to cover at least six month's expenditure.

Volunteers

We would like to thank all those who freely give of their time and skills to make the church the pastorally caring, lively and vibrant community it is — to all with safety and safeguarding paramount. Sincere thanks also go to individuals and all the various groups and fellowships that have tirelessly raised funds for our new church building project. There were 22 volunteers during 2022/2023.

Structure, Governance and Management

The governance of a local Methodist Church such as Edmonton is set out in the Connexional Practice and Discipline of the Methodist Church of Great Britain. The membership of the Church Council consists of those who are members ex-officio because they are Circuit staff, church stewards, the Church Treasurer or Church Council Secretary. It also includes those appointed by the Church Council to ensure representation of the various activities of the church and those appointed by the General Church Meeting to ensure the Council is representative of the congregation. The General Church Meeting also elects the Church Stewards.

The Church Council met four times in the year. Given its wide responsibilities, the Council has a number of committees, each dealing with a particular aspect of church life. These committees, which include worship, pastoral, property and finance are all responsible to the Church Council and report back to it regularly. We seek greater inclusion and all our meetings are open to all members and friends to observe and speak at. Minutes are circulated to members and copies are accessible within the building.
