prep8rod lo comply with the SORP FRS 102.
structure, governance and management
AT is a charitable company lim6t8d by guarantee, gavemed by Its Memorandum and Artlcles of
Association adopted on Ihe 1st January 2009. 11 has no share capital and thg liabillty of gach member
in the evgnl of windSng-up is limited lo £10. Prior lo this, AT was a char(lable trust but converted to a
Charitable Company limiled by guarantee due to the rapid expansion of the Trust.
RecruFtment and appolntment of trustees
AT is run by a board of directors which compiises èight directors (Trusleesl. The Trustees are both
Tr4JStces of the Charity and Directors of the Company. Where there is 8 need for new Trustees, those
would b6 Identified and appointed by the Current Trustees.
Organisational Structure
At present, the eight Twstees come from a variety of proféssional backgrounds, each ralevant to the
adivilies of the charity. The Board of Trusteés meets al least four times 8 yèar, receiving reports from
the Chief Execullve Officér (CEO) who currently is also a Trust86 about the activities of tho charity
through its va￿0￿S prolecls sel out below. Thé day-l04ay management of the organlgalson is
shouldered by a staff team, headed by the CEO. Such day-lo-day management Is suparvised by the
CEO and a Senior Marb8g6ment Team ISMTI that includes the Operaliorks Director, the Legal &
Policy Officèr and a volunteer legal consullanl, the Company Secretary. The SMT recéives regular
reports (at least monthly) from the charity's in-house Accountsnl and seTiOUS consideration Is given to
the state of the tharills finarbces wlh appropriate reports being made to the Board of Directors for
decisioN5 lo be madè for the continuing ftnancial viability of the charlly. The remuneration of the paid
SMT members is reviewed annually by the Board ol Truslces who lakes into consideration the level of
pay accorded lo people In similar positions within the Third Sector. The charity wholly owns its
subsidiary trading company, As¢ension Commercial Ltd. of which the CEO is also a Dirertor. The
incipal businoss of the trading subsidiary is the Supply of uniforms lo Street Pastors. School and
Collcg6 Pastors, Rail Paslors and Rèsponse Pastors together wth merchandisc that primnotes Ihg
work of the charity through its various iniliallves.
Induction and training of trustees
Tho chair of Trustees is responsible for the IndUc￿on of any new Trustee. This Involves awareness
training of a Trustee's duiies and respmsibilities. thtr governing docurnenl. admlnislrative procedures,
as well as th& history 8nd ethos of the charity. A new Trustee wll also receive a copy ol the ch5Jrily's

AT has a number of schemes in operalion which aclriely $8rva the public, nam81y Street Pastors,
Rtssponse Pastors, School and College Pastors. Urban Youth Mission, Rail Pastors, the 6Q140 Youth
Pioie¢t, the Synergy Network, 2gelher1 and the Oyibi Project. Morè d6tails are provided bolow.

2011 to hav8 due regard lo the publlc benefit guidance published by the Ch8rfty Commission for
England and Wales.

train stations, lo support and counsel Ihose traumalised by national tragic events, engaging young

enormous potential th81 young poople have to impact their pean* and the wider community for good,
building solidarity and cooperation betwaon charities, comm¥Jnity agencies, the police and local

Volunteers
Volunteers perform 8 key task on behalf of AT. They are therefore central to meeting the aims and
objèctives of AT. 11 would be impossible to deliver our mission wilhout them. At present, thère are
approximately 14,OOQ trained volunteers in England and Walos working for local chartties operating
under the AT umbrella as Street Pastors, Sohool and Collego Pastors, Rail Pastors and Re*ponse
Pastors. AT aims to sustain and increaso ils volunteer base. AT aims, thmugh its social action
initiatives, lo train indiwduals for relevant an(J infomièd inleraction al local. national and international

Achievements and performance
Tralnlng
AT through its social action Initia￿VeS aims to train individuals for relevant and informed interaction at
Iixal, national and intemation8118vèls.
No néw Street Pastors were added lo the pool of Street P8%tors s8rving UK during 2020 dua
to th8 ¢ovld-19 government reslrltttion rules. The individuals Irain1ng were unable to complole
their face lo farA) tr8ining. Ascensiorb Tiust Onllno Training started in October 2020 with the
hope of dolivorlng onllne tmining lo all for Street Pastors, School, Loadership courses,
Equality course and other b&spoke Iraining ¢ouYses lo both our P8StoVs initiatives and lo the
public In general.
New School Pastors were Iraining alongslde Street Pastors in mental health, youth culture
and listenlng 8kllls and they wll also bè completlng thelr training in 2021.
Training events took plac& across Ihe netWLwks In th& areas of Roles & Responslbililies,
Refresher courses and School Pastors.

Projects
Streat Pastors
Street P8slors are trained volunt88rs who patrol the streets between the hours of 10pm and 4am
{although this varies in some areas according to local n&èds}. At present there are approximately 260
local initiativos up and down the country and more internationally.
Response Pastors
R8spvnse Pastors delivor h@Ip lo those who are Iraumatised by major disasters at events such 4$
lerrorist attacks, crashes and other incidents. Past avonls where Response Pastors have oflered
suptK>rt included the London Bridge lerrorists attack.
School and College Pastors
AS of 31 December 2020, there were 31 inilialives In the UK. School Pastors meet students at the
school gat8, al the bus slop and go into schools wllh a c8ring and listening Oar. ready to help staff in
encouraging young people who are hurting and vulnerable.
Urban Youth Mlsslon
This typically involves taking a oroup of young people away for a week whère they can be inspired,
share fellowship wlh each other, develop grfts and talents, grow and slay connected to God.

Working in pathership with thè Lambolh Melhodisl Circuit and tha London City Misslon, this project
equips young people in the Borough of L8mbeth to realise their full potential and develop as
responsible membèrs of their community. Two full lime youth workèrs gre worknng wlhln th& church
and wider community to equip and empower young people to play thelr part in community life.
The Synèrgy Network
AT leads this network brirwJing together organisalions and individuals to work collaboratively lo
address knife and gun crime. Currently working in London, relationship is key as tooèlher we are
stronger. The Synergy Nèlwork brings all voices to the tabk so that WA unita behind one cry to bring
pea¢e and hope back to our streets and community. In tha wst, AT was inslrumentsl in organising a
Rally in Trafalgar Square, °Standing Together" bringing togolh8r church leaders and families of thosè
who had been tr5Jumalised by thg loss or injury of young people through knife ¢rlme, c811ing for a
united Church rosponse to this troubling, peTsisl8nl problem.

Slnce th¢ disproportionate impact of COVID 19 on thosé from ethnic minorities backgrounds became
apparent, FIV82￿edic8 have gathered al speed an oxpanding coalition of doctors, nurses, m6nlal
health workers, counsellors, soaal care professionals and allied haalth care workers lo addross the
impact of the COVID 19 p2ndemie on those from ethnic minoritics Communities during the pandemi
and beyond. Fwo2Mcdi¢s can therefore bo described as a synergy of health inS1ialives and partrbers
under the umbrella of Ascension Trust whose rllain oble¢live is lo dismantle health inequalities and
disparities in health.
Principal funding sources
Although we genorate income by way of donations from the public and thurches, the principal fundlng
source for the charity are contribLJlions from its V8rious inilialives {including Street Pastors Initiatives)
in the form of licen￿ fees. The liconce fee income, when compared to the previous years has
reduced. How8vèr, we would like to thank our inilialives who, nolwilhslanding their stressed fin8ncial
circumstsnces, ¢onlinue lo ¢ontribule to the central funds $0 that AT can maintain its servicos to the
whole neiwork. Tha Trusleas, wtlh help and recommendations from the Senior Managemellt Team,
consulted with all Street Pastor Inlllallves In 2019 with a view lo Incre88ing thè minlmum li￿nce fee lo
b8 paid in future by local inlllalives from January 2020. thls was agreed at £800p.a.

This financlal year has been a very diffiwll one wth the onset of the coronavirus pandemSc in March
2020 resulting In many of the Street Pastor and Schoollcollege Paslor initialnies ceasing much of
their aclivily for large parts ol the year due lo the Govemmenl lockdown regulations. AT was helped
subsianlially since April 2020 with the Government Job Rolention {furfoughl scheme whereby a
significant proportion of staff salaries were paid by the Govemmenl.
Also, the Board remains vigilant in Ihelr commllmenl to tho work of AT and thereby have formed 8
Finance Sub-commillee to review regularly the finances of thé organlsalion. seeking to idenllfy naw
opportunities to incrèase r8vanu8 and to revlew fundraising optlons.

mmitted or irkvèsled in tangible fixed asseis held by AT is not less than 12 months of expenditur8.
This wlll allow AT lo function properly. ev8n if Ihare Is a significant downlurn in income In the present
economic clrcumslances. As at 31 De￿mber 2020, As￿nSIon Trust had free reservcs, being
unrestricted funds not de5ignaled for a specific purpose, lotalling £466,742 (2019- fJ89,498). This
repr6s6nls about 11 months of expected overhead 6xpendilure.
The Management and Trustees acknO￿edg0 th¢ significant shortfall of its targel level and plan lo
continue lo build reserves through operating surpluses and largaled funling appli¢ations. In the short
term, the Management and Trustees have also wnsidered the extenl lo which existing activities and
expenditure coukl be curtailed, should such arcumslances arise.
