Rectorfs re rt 2024 The Spiritual life of St Barnabas is healthy. and that is noticed by visitors who pop in and by those who stay to form part of our regular congregation. Though we have lost some faithful church members who have died. we also notice growth areas especially at the 11.00 am modern service held each Sunday. This is just one of the congregations who meet and form part of a varied Style of worship available at our church. On weeks when we have Messy Church, this is the largest of our regular congregations. It continues to meet once a month in The Centre building. l am grateful to Revd Colin Hart for pastoring the flock so warmly, and in a way that I know makes people feel safe and cherished when l am away. I have also had the assistance of Revd lan Davenport on some Wednesdays and Revd Malcolm Dyer a retired URC minister and Trevor Jones with whom it has been a pleasure to share preaching. We continue to enhance the Bible teaching and learning. Though our evening house group closed down, a new group on Wednesday afternoon meets every week at The Rectory. There are between 8 and 12 people who attend. We have studied the Bible course, Talking Jesus, The Fwits of the Spirit and began Luke's Gospel. We have also prayed and cared for each other and shared a lot of biscuits and laughter too. It is my hope that we will be able to expand into having an evening group soon too. Beginning late 2023, and continuing through 2024, thanks to Helene Kaye's bid-writing, we have ured a total of £72,000 worth of grant funding. This year we managed to feed over 80 families at Christmas as well as providing gifts for them. Lin Longshaw Parr and the Bromborough walkers did a great job on shopping and wrapping gifts for children and adults. We worked, though not exclusively, with Woodslee and Mendell Primary School, who remain keen to work with us. Our engagement with the community continues to grow and develop. We have developed an umbrella title for our outreach ministry which is St Barnabas Community Care network. It reflects that a lot of what we are doing is in partnership with others. We raised £5000 on the biggest yet Christmas Tree Festival which was absolutely wonderful and involved the whole church and many people in the community. We developed the attendance of our children's groups and had 10 of them visit during the extended opening period, ably organised by Gill Walker our children's work team leader. Gill is also working with a small group of people to upgrade the area which children can visit in church (soon to be called 'The Ark.). We are grateful to a Trust based in Thornton Hough for giving us a grant of £940 to enable us to buy new resources. We hope that in 2025 we will be able to provide a more consistent offering for children on Sunday morning. This is the commitment of the PCC made in 2023 and which will be reviewed in 2025. We must not be complacent about our offering to children and young people and be alive to ways that we can strengthen and enhance all that we do in this area. The Centre has for many years had the ingredients to be a focal point ft)r weekday church and mission. We are in the process of negotiating a new lease with the Diocesan Board of Education who own the Old School. School house and the land surrounding that This will require us to raise more money, but it gives us some security with which to plan. It is now already making more profit which has been great news. The local centre for the Wirral Free School Uniform initiative called Fuss and Fups is thri%fjng there and throughout most of the year tt was hosting 'Caritas' (a help and support group for the community) on Tuesday. We have representstNes of our local MP in the building every other Friday and have been the venue for several training courses held in the area. Controversially, we began to offer free tea and coffee, but the donations and gift aid received on those donations are such that we do not lose any money by doing this. The main challenge is a lack of volunteers but there are plans to develop the buildings use with events that bring with them people who can help. We welcomed lan Walker as Church warden and Helene as Deputy warden, an unofficial appointment made by the Rector in agreement with the PCC These two joined Thelma McGorry who is an experienced warden and crrtical to the smooth running of the centre and lan Sneddon a fantastic deputy warden with a lot of responsibility around the maintenance of our buildings. Without these four people my life and that of the parish would be so much less. A huge thanks to them. I have also been supported by the work of the treasurer Julie Watts. Thanks to Julie, we know what everything costs and how much is being given. More people have moved to direct debit and the Tap2Give machine has helped us to collect further funds especially at big events where people no longer carry cash. Her meticulous attention to detsil has ensured good management and excellent systems that will be passed on to whoever follows her. A change to her own employment means that she will not continue in this role next year. We thank her for all that she has given. l also thank Fiona Austin for the compilation of this report alongside all her other duties which includes being PCC secretsry. She is remarkably good at managing me in many areas of my role as rector. a fart for which l am hugely grateful. Not least because she too does tt with great care, grace. patience and order and which is of considerable benefit to us all. Finally, no report would be complete without reference to Jenny Hope who inspite of tying to step back from many tssks, continues to provide administrative support prayer ministry, hygiene certificate expertise in the centre, children's worl costumes for the nati%ity and does a lot of catering. She is I think St Barnabas's secret weapon. Bromborough Parochlal Church Councll Trustees Report for the Year Ended 31.12.2024
2024 has been a really strong year in so many ways. Alongside a steadily growing number of people worshipping with us on Sundays, there is a growth in spiritual enquiry and confidence amongst those who attend regularly. Sadly, we said farewell to Val and Lilly who moved independently to Cornwall: we joke that we have sent missionaries into the Westcountry. Through connection with someone in Bromborough we have a tentative link with St Barnabas in Limassol Cyprus and of course our deepening links with our CMS partners Marcio and Noemi. We are grateful to Juan and Lis for making that happen. There are three final thanks that I would like to offer. The first is to Sue Parkin who took on the role of Parish Safeguarding Officer thinking it would be a little bit of a job she could do, only to discover that this is a season in which the responsibility and the workload of the PSO is growing and growing. Thanks to her for getting us nearer to the line in terms of what we need to have done as individuals and as a parish. And of course, a moment to remind all who read this that Safeguarding of Children and Vulnerable adults is a matter for us all. Second, thanks to every team leader, group leader or secretary. l am personally thankful to you for what you do and I hope I never overlook what you give in the service of Jesus and of our parish. It is valued. Last but definitely not least, thank you to all of you who are members or attendees or supporters of St Barnabas and who work in any way, big or small to make stuff happen. There are many who do not share faith but who do work in the bell tower, the churchyard, the centre café, the food projects, the tree festival and in everything else we do. Without your engagement our church and our community would be so much less. Jenny Gillies Rector Bromborough Parochlal Church Council Trustees Report for the Year Ended 31.12.2024
nPa ort What a joy and privilege it was to host Marcio and Noemi plus Nataniel, Isabella and Evangelina only Giovanni was missing as he was not well. So now when we pray we can visualise the family. First we went to the Rectory and enjoyed coffee and a light lunch. After many questions we asked what they would like us to pray for specifically. Education for the children was a major worry and Noemi is going for home tutoring. She had done this with Giovanni (the eldest boy) and it went really well, his grades were good enough to apply to University in the Ststes. However, he has decided to further his studies in the UL Their joy was working with a team whom they trust to carry on with the boat in the park project They are returning to Brazil in the early days of April. Marcio asked for prayer to make sure they were on the right track to advance the work and some ideas for new strategies. Some of us went for a walk in Eastham Woods with the family so they could visualise our Park. Andrew Watts treated the children to an ice cream which went down well. We then all went to our house for nibbles and cake, while the adults continued with the questions wanting to know as much as possible about life in Brazil. Our part in this mission is of course to pray for them regularly and forward the £500 a year that was pledged. There was also an additional amount donated of £258.95 from the Harvest lunch, Maundy Thursday fish and chips supper with Marco and Noemi and Lynne Whittakerfs card sales. Many thanks to the congregation for their prayers and the generosity and willingness to give from their own money to support our friends and partners in mission in Brazil. Lls Sedano Wirral South Deane nod Annual re ort Deanery Synod reps attend as many meetings as possible. In March Rev Debbie Wilkinson lead for the Wirral Waters project in Birkenhead docks gave a presentation about the work she is doing there and the way in which the Church of England is becoming involved with regular seNices and social coffee mornings for those moving into the homes there. In May the Synod took part in the service of Induction of Rev Rachel Newall as Vicar of St Thomas Ellesmere Port which was held in St Thomas. The Autumn meeting was a Deanery service at Thomton Hough when each Parish was invited to submit a hymn to be sung and a prayer to be used during the service. Children and Youth d outh Team Re 2024 was an interesting year for the Team in that we have seen changes in personnel as well as in the activities on offer to the children and young people at St Bamabas. We have several new members of the Children's Team who are very welcome and are much needed. We had 6 Baptisms during the year following the relevant number of pre-baptism meetings. This has resulted in at least one family regularly attending Sunday services who travel from outside the parish to do so. Busy Bags have been taken out of use for a while to give the children attending services a change of activity and this has worked well for the most parL Sadly, we had to take the decision to close Little Church down on a regular basis due to many of the children now being of an age to benefit from government supported child minding hours. Instead, Little Church will hopefully rnn as a holiday-based activity in the near future. My thanks to Jenny Hope and her volunteers for all their work over the years which kept Little Church going for as long as it did. Messy church continues to thrive though we had a very small tumout for the December meeting which was very disappointing. The date for next year's December meeting will be changed to reflect that. Once again, my thanks to Fiona and her team of volunteers for their hard work each month. More volunteers are desperately needed! Harvest services took place with both Mendell and Woodslee Schools as usual as well as Christmas services. There was a good representation from the schools and young people's organisations at our Remembrance Day service when a number of wreaths were laid. In addition to decorating trees for our Annual Tree Festival this Christmas, groups of children were invited into church with their teachers or group leaders. 10 groups accepted the invitation and each group listened to a story and had the chance to look at the trees and make their votes before leaving again. This wa5 much appreciated by those who came and is planned again for 2025. As ever, none of these activities could happen without the help and support of volunteers to whom l extend my greatest thanks. More are still welcome to join in the fun!! Gill Walker. Little Church re Ltttle Church wa5 held in Church each Thursday morning with the usual format of prayers, worship songs, story, craft, bubbles and refreshments. A very faithful team of helpers came every week to do the refreshments, work the audio and help with craft We were delighted to welcome a new grandchild for two of the team, and a new baby brother for another of our regular members. Sadly, after September numbers dwindled when the Government provided 30 hours of free nursery care for all DNO year olds. The one or two who did come said all the groups and clubs they attended were closing due to lack of numbers. At the end of October, the Rector, Children's Leader Gill and I reluctantly decided Kid's Church should close except for the School Holidays. However, this is not the end, as plans are afoot for a new type of activity for babies and their families- watch this space. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful team who supported Carol {Jones) and l in running Little Church over many years, Carol for longer than I who stsrted attending as a Grandma before becoming a Leader. Jenny Hope Mes rch re In 2024 we continued to hold Messy Church on the second Tuesday of the month after school, from 3.30 -5pm in the Centre. We welcome people from 3.30 and after a drink and a biscuit the children move around the room with the adult who brought them, doing the activities which have been organised around a Bible theme. There are messy activities, craft activities, construction activities and active activities all led by brilliant volunteers from Church. There is also a play area for very little children. After craft the Rector gives a short interactive chat with a song and prayers, this explains the theme of Messy Church for that month. Then it's time for the meal. Everyone who comes to Messy Church is fed a hot meal and pudding thanks to the super team of volunteers who cool senie and wash up. Our core group of very regular members, who see Messy Church as their Church, continue to attend along with new people each month as they hear about Messy Church through social media, their primary schools and word of mouth. None of this fun would be possible without the team of willing volunteers who greet cook, wash up. chat, craf( set up and clear away. However, if we are to expand Messy Church we will need more volunteers. Could you help? Any help would be wonderful, Thanks to all the amazing volunteers who come and have fun at Messy Church. ' Unlon re ort Although still few in number the Branch has met each moth throughout the year. Some members are unable to attend in person, but remain fvll members and are kept in touch receiving all the copies of Mothers. Union Matters, the prayer diary etc Themes for setvices during the year included Cathedrals Missionaries. Friends and Advent. Several members went to the Deanery Advent Service at Neston Parish Church, this was a beautiful service led by the Wicar of Neston and was followed by a delicious aftemoon tea which was as good as any 5 star hotel. At the Christmas Tree festival the tree was decorated for the theme of Joy with the letters spelling the word and hearts covered with pictures of the things that give members joy. which included, family, grandchildren, the garden, birds, reading and many more things. Both the Diocesan meetings at Hartford were attended during the year, at the first meeting planning began for Mothers, Union's 150 Anniversary in 2026. At the autumn meeting we delivered, with other branches, items of baby toiletries, books, baby grows, nappie5 and toys for Kids, Bank Chester. A huge wagon was filled with the donations, who knew packs of nappies are so heavy, a far cry from the Terry nappies members used for their own children. J Hope Branch Leader Over the last year, or more, the men from St Barnabas have been meeting for a monthly breakfast at the Royal Oak in Bromborough on Saturday mornings. We began with around eight men and have seen numbers grow to fourteen men. It is encouraging to see more fell0v from the church joining us as well as a few friends and neighbours. We have no structure as we meec we simply meet to socialise. encourage each other and discover more about each other. For example, who knew that Graham had an old Ford Cortina he is having restored? All men are welcome as we meet on the second Saturday of the month at 9.00am at the Royal Oak Revd Malcolm Dyer Bromborough Parochial Church Council Tnjstees Report for the Year Ended 31.12.2024
Ladies Fello 2024 Ladies Fellowship meet on the first Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Centre. Here is the programme for the latter part of 2024 and looking ahead to 2025. On Tuesday 3rd September we welcomed Mrs. Liz Sedano to tell us about her missionary work in Peru. Liz gave a very interesting and colourful account of her 13 years in the country. At that time, Peru was very much in turmoil and terrorism was rife,, many lives were lost amidst the violence. She showed us some beautifvl keepsakes as well as products from the country. We all enjoyed a very pleasant evening. On Tuesday 1" October our speaker was Mr. Gavin Hunter who gave us a potted history of the many hospitsls and sanitorium5 that have existed on the Wirral- many we were unaware ofl Because of our location near to the port of Liverpool there were many foreign sailors entering the area, introducing various infections. Lots of people needed long stsys in sanitoriums and the fresh air on the peninsula was a great healer. Gavin is a very good speaker, entertaining and easy to listen to. th On Tuesday 4 November we welcomed Pauline and her assistant from Bromborough Flowers. Pauline is extremely creative and she has such a sunny personality- the evening was very lively and enjoyable. Pauline made a beautiful wreath and 3 arrangements, which were raffled. We were all very envious of the winning ladies! On Tuesday 3 December we held our Christmas Miscellany; reading and carols were followed by Christmas bingo together with festive refreshments. 2025 Programme includes: On Tuesday 4th February Mrs. Vara Hrolswiffe- women and their roles in Viking history. th On Tuesday 4 March Mrs. Julie Marshall 'Royal Secrets and Scandals. ' The Centre re ort The Village Centre is at the heart of the local community. During 2024, we have welcomed new groups into the centre for both short and long term lets. Everyone who hires a room is complimentsry about the warm welcome they receive and the quality of the venue. We have recently installed a large TV in the large room and this will enable hirers to have a straightforward way to display presentations and of course it can be used for our own meetings. The centre now has new curtains and new energy efficient lighting. We have been able to open the centre café on the Saturdays when car boot sales have tsken place. This is thanks to Thelma. Several full English breakfast sessions have tsken place on Saturday mornings. These are well attended and are good fundraising sessions and will continue during 2025. I'd just like to thank all the amazing volunteers who ensure the centre is always manned and enable the extra events to happen. We are always looking for new volunteers, both a regular commitment and those who can help on an occasional basis. Just call in and speak to one of our volunteers. We look forward to welcoming new groups and continuing to grow in the local community. Susan Jones Vlllage Centre Management Team Leader and Natter mboro Eastham TBE The group continues to meet in the Centre every Monday and several people knit at home too. Items are still made for Teams4U for the shoe boxes, as well as knitted items cloth bags were made by home machinists. Hats for seafarers continue to be in demand as well as items for the special care baby unit at Arrowe Park. One member makes the most wonderful twiddle muffs for local care homes. Many knitted items are sent via District 18 Inner Wheel to Intemational Aid which is based in Chorley and has charity shops where some goods are sold, and others go overseas mostly to Eastern Europe. Our Easter 24 project selling crème egg filled chickens & Rabbits as well as toy rabbits was in aid of the school farm at a Wirral school which is supported entirely by the School staff and some parents. Chri tmas T Festival re Our annual Christmas Tree Festival took place once again in 2024. Each year we are pleased to report that it is even bigger than the last 2024 really was the biggest yeL We again broke the record for the number of trees on display, and had a record number of visitors and a record amount of funds raised. The profit was just short of £5000 which will be used in our much-needed community work and running cost& Over 3500 visitors had a difficult decision in deciding which tree to vote for as their favourite tree, as the display was stunning yet again, and all 82 trees really pulled out all the stops! 2024 also saw the retum of our Sants's Grotto. With over 200 visitors, including their grownups Santa and his elves were very busy across the 2 days and 1 evening they were at St Barnabas and The Centre. We managed to make a profft for our efforts combined in the above figure. l anticipate more of the same for 2025 - watch this space! How much bigger can we get without an extension/planning pemiission? {Joking!) Exciting discussions have already been had about extending our visiting times/opening days, so the year ahead is definitely not to be missed! Especially as it will be our tenth year of the festival! Food for Familles Food for Families has been running for 8 years now. When Jenny started IL there were 6 families to be fed. last year December 2024, we fed 114 families (plus a couple of others just before Christmas). We fed 50 families from Co-op Academy Woodslee Primary School and 58 families from Mendell Primary School, together with a further 6 families from parishioners. Lin Longshaw-Parr provided presents for each person in every family too. l applied to Wirral Borough Council Winter Grant and was awarded £17,600.00. This year we changed the way that we helped the families, so I placed an order so that they could buy their own turkey (or meat of their choice), together with fresh vegetsbles and all the trimmings for Christmas Day. The Aldi food was delivered to Kangaroo Storage on the morning of Monday 16 December. My husband Steve was in charge of unloading and had borrowed 6 Aldi shopping trolleys, which made life so much easier for our volunteers. We all signed in and signed out in the Fire Register, having completed a risk assessment previously. We had also taken on board the lessons learned from the previous bag pack in 2023, and put changes into place. So volunteers had to wear a lanyard and hi-vis jacket to distinguish us from the general public. On the back of feeding families Trev Jones has designed menus to suit 1 person 1 child, 1 adult 2 children etc., so that anyone helping to feed a family in need, has a readymade shopping list an idea of how much it should cost and can leave the menu with the family we are supporting, to help them make the food last. In addition, Andrew Watts has put a link on the St Barnabas website with recipes etc so that any parishioner who is struggling to make ends meet can see a way to feed their family nutritiously, without breaking the bank. It will also contain news about grants that l apply for, or donations that we have received specifically for Food for families. The atmosphere on the day was fantsstiG everyone remained calm, they knew what they were doing, and just got on with it. By 2.30, we had packed the bags for all the 114 families. We are still looking forward and considering further improvements. I send a big heartfelt thank you to our volunteers, without whom, none of this could have been done. Annual Accounts Financlal Re ort We said last year that we would take giant strides in our grant applications, and the team has more than fulfilled that goal. Donations and grants awarded (£31.600) have enSUd that our mission and outreach projects have gone from strength-to-strength with expenditure of more than £42,000 by the St Bamabas Community Care Network which has continued its vitsl work in the local community. The Tap to Give machine ha5 tsken £6,807 since it was put in place in October 2023, at an overall cost of less than £200. Visttors and regular givers alike are delighted to be able to use a card or their phone to make a donation, rather than remember to bring along that old-fashioned stuff called cash. The Christmas Tree Festival surpassed tsrgets yet again, and wtth other events held throughout the year (car boot sales. a silent disco and a garden paty) raised a total of £6.282 after expenditure. In the Village Centre, warm hub donations at £3,490 more than doubled those in 2023. Room hire takings similarly more than doubled on 2023. helped by eight weeks of week-day bookings by an English teaching company. Café takings and expenditure on supplies were both roughly 20% lower than in 2023, and overall gain for the café at £9,761 was 20% lower than the previous year. Even with expenditure on curtains and lighting the Village Centre made a gain of £9560 for 2024. St Barnabas has been fortunate to receive some substsntial unrestricted legacies in 2024, totalling more than £22,000. After high rises in fvel bills during 2023 it was a surprise that Church gas and electric payments in 2024 were lower by 26% and 10% respertively. Regular giving donations this year increased again, this time by an arnazing 5.25%, almost double the rate of inflation (according to the office for national statistics, the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) ro* by 2.5% in the 12 months to December 2024). Planned gtvtng from our regular givers, by brown envelope or standing order, now accounts for 40% of all (unrestricted) Church income. The Parish Share was paid in full for the whole year and still the Church made a gain of nearfy £17.OIX) in 2024. Thus overall, St Bamabas (the Church and the Willage Centre together) has made a gain in 2024 of nearly £26.500. We move into 2025 looking to use this solid plafform to consolidate and continue to deliver important services to the local community, whilst at the same time aware that both grants and legacies, which have been instrumentsl in achieving our goals are neither guaranteed nor predictsble.
