The Trustees present their Annual Report and Accounts for 2024.
General
Colchester Baptist Church was first registered and located in East Stockwell Street in 1690 and
moved to its current location in Eld Lane in 1711. Charles Spurgeon, who became a Christian at the
Primitive Methodist Church, attended CBC, was baptised. and preached his first sermon at the age of
sixteen. He later founded Spurgeon's College and helped estsblish two hundred new churches.
SpurBeon had sufficient resources to provide match fundln8 for our Church Hall.
The Grade 11-listed Church, built in 1834. seats around 350 in the sanrtuary. Additional facilities
Include a multipurpose hall, smaller rooms. a ministees r(M)m, a lounge, and a youth lounge. The
large forecourt engages local shoppers with the 8ood news of Jesus, especially during Christmas and
Easter. The Church Is a registered chbrity (Charlty Comrnisslon No. 11270241 and is afflliated with the
Baptist Union of Great Britain and the Eastern Baptist Association.
Charftable Objert
In conformity with its Con5tltution. the principal purpose of the Church is the advancement of the
Christian faith according to the principles of the Baptist denomination. to include the advancement
of educatlon, communtty service and such other general charitable purposes in such parts of the
United Kingdom and the world as the Church shall determine. The Church octuples premises whith
are held 'ln Trusy by The Baptist Union Corporation Ltd, as its Property Trustee,

Church membership Is open to anyone who professes Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour and shows
evidence of their falth. Those who have not yet been baptised as believers may join but are
encouraged to reflect on New Testament teachings about baptism. Church Meetings are normally
held bl-monthly and are responslble for the overall policy and malor decisions of the Churth. In
ccordance with the Constitution, members appoint up to twefve Deacons, a Church Secretary. and
a Treasurer. They, together wrth the Ministers. are collectrvely known as the Dlaconate and are the
Trustees of the Church. They are responsible for the day-t041ay operation of the Church's work and
witness, as well as Its flnancial and legal matters. All members are expected to participate in the
spiritual and prartical activities of the Church. Relevant matters are submitted to the Church
Meeting by the Trustees or may be raised by members in Churth Meeting5 for further consideratlon
by the Trustees. Thou8h the Constitution pemits decisions to be made at Church Meetin8s by
appropriate majoritie5, the Church seeks to work by consensus wherever posslble.
Sèfeguardlng. The Churth implements policies. procedures. trainin& and 5UPPOrt ft)r indlvlduals
working with children, young people, and adults at risk of ham. It also ensures that staff and
volunteers working with these groups are also vetted through the Di5dosure and Barring Service.

The Church's purpose staternent is Yo follow Jesus Christ and make Him known," with the Vision of
becoming"a growin& thrNin& nurturing family of God." To achieve this. it offers various artivities
for members and the wider community, aiming to demonstrate Chri5V5 love in action and encourage
a closer relationship with Him.

Central to the work and witness of the Church is the provlslon of regular publle servlces of Christlan
worshlp. The Church holds regular publlc Chrlstian worship services on Sundays at 10..30 a.m. and
twice a month at 6:30 p.m. These SerW￿ feature a blend of contemporary and tradltlonal music
and are livestreamed. There is a range of programmes for children and youth during the morning
service.
The Church seeks to be a friendly and welcoming community. and everyone is welcome to attend
any of these servkes.

The Church Is part of a group of local churches that organises an annual jolnt Pentecost servlce and
an annual Free Family Fun Day In Colchesterfs Castle Parl which continues to attract thousands of
parents and chlldren.
Opon Door
The Church hosts Open Door- Colche5ter, an independent charity that uses the Church Lounge on
onAays, Tuesdays. WednesdayS1 and Fridays. Here. people meet over a cup of tea or coffee . the
Director and volunteers offer a Ilstenln8 ear and provlde advi￿ and help with problems.
Use of the Churth premlses by external groups:
Colthester Ckty Pastors meet on Frlday and Saturday nights.
The 12th Q>lchester Sea Scout Group meet on Wednesday evenings.
Nepalese Church worship semce and loln our thlldren's attivltles on Sundays.
The Trustees consider that both the Church's Purpose and the activf(ies designed to achieve it, as
shown above. comply wf(h the guidance of the Charity Commi55ion on public benefft in respert to
the advancement of religion.

Achievements and Performance
AttendanTr at CBCS Sunday service5 continues to Increase, with IS￿280 people in the congregation
each week. The fellowship is international, welcoming families from over twenty Countries, Including
Ni8eria, Kenya. Malawi. Hong Kon& India, Brazil, s￿jth Africa, Malaysia, Ghana, and Romania.
The Church's strong Sunday Children'5 ministry continues to attract families. Around fifty children.
including twenty teenagers, join Sunday morning sessions. Recently. we had over fifty young people
born since 21)JO at the front of the Church, where we thanked God for them and prayed for their
future. The young adult group has expanded to approxlmately twenty members: some now serve as
Deacons. partklpatlng In leadershlpi preachln& worshSp, fellowshlp. and evange115tic activities.
The growth in attendance is in line with the trends within the 8aptlSt Denominatlon and atro55 the
country (Blble Socletvs Yhe Quiet RevNal: Gen Z leads rise In churth attendante'l
Church membership fell slightly from to 180. although new members since 2020 make up
quarter of the membership. Several member5, induding retlred deacons, prominent leaders. and our
retired Senior Minister. passed away durlng the past year. Notably, Reverend Rodney Sawtell. who
served the Church from 1979 to 2CQ7, was amon8 them. After retiring, Rodney recelved the title
'Pastor Emerltus. In recognition of h55 service and dedication to the Church and faithfulness to hls
Lord. We are grateful to God for all those who have left a le8acy through thelr service and those who
ontinue to contribute to the life of this Church fellowshlp. Currentlyi there are approximately one
hundred members voluntarlly giving their time, skills, resources. and prayers to support over thlrty
Church actlvlties, makin8 a significant impact on the Kln8dom.
Rellrement of the chU￿h Secretary
The Church extends its heartfelt thanks and deep appreclatlon to Mike Baker for his remarkable,
sacrificial service over the past twenty years. Throughout his tenure. Mike has been an extraordinary
presence wlthln our Church, 8uldlng us With wisdom, skill, humility, and steadfast dedicatlon. H15
leadership ha5 been instrumental in navigating the Church through times of transition, includin8 the
appolntment of senlor mlnlsters and ass¢xiate mlnlsters, always wtth a steady hand and complete
confidence that God is in control.
Flnandal Revlew
The Church continued to ralse the funds It needed to Sustain its activities wlthin its own membership
and congregation. In addition to financial sUPPOrt required to achieve its objectives. the Church Is
also heavlly dependent upon its members worklng as volunteers In all aspects of its artivities. It 15
good to report that they do this willingly and with great enthusiasm. The flnanclal results for the
year, Including the accountin8 policies and the Reserves Policy ol the Trustees, are set out in the
accompanying financial statements. The Trustees are satisfied that there are sufficient reserves at
the Balance Sheet date, tO8ether with antkipated ongoing income, to enable the Church to funrtion
effectively in the coming year.

Leadership Structure and stsff
Lead Minister Ipart-timel.. Reverend Terry Tennens, who oversee5 a senior team of three.
Terry joined during the last ministerial interregnum and effectively guided the transition to
dynamlc team mlnlstry. contributing to substantlal growth in congregation numbers and a rise in
spiritual commitment.
Assoclate Mlnlster Ifull-tlmel: The Reverend John Pulford is responsible for our youth, children,
families, and pastoral care. Together with his wrfe Rebecca, John organises the annual retreat to
SSzewell Hall, where up to eighty members and friends gatherfor worship and fellowship.
Assoclate Mlnlster Ipart-timel- Pastor Lee focuses primarily on evangelism and preaching. Lee is also
the part-tlme Director of Our Open Door Ministry, a drokFln centre at the Church offering help,
support, spiritual guidance, and a listening ear to people in need.
