Structure, Governance and Management Che55 Valley Universlty of theThird Age I'Olu3a'l is a registered charity and wa5 formed on 28 November 2008 as an unincorporated charlty and is affiliated with the Third A8e Trust. th The charity is governed by its constitution which was adopted in its present form on 14 June 2018. The management of CVu3a is the responsibility of the Trustees who are elected at an Annual General Meetin8 for a fixed term of two years and may be reappolnted for further terms at the dlscretlon of the members. Each Trustee has been told of their responsibilitles and le8al liabilit5es as trustees and provided with the relevant guidance. All Trustees are volunteers and receive no remuneration or other benefits in return for their services. Monthly meetings are held to manage the operntion of CVu3a and oversee the 53 interest groups run by Members. This is achieved by assessing the financial and operational positlon of CVu3a, ensuring that the charity operates in accordance with its charitable objecttves and ensuring that instrurttons to all relevant partie5 on the fi'nancial and risk mana8ement of Interest Groups and all other activities are clear. Oblertfves and Athftles The charity's objective is to advance the education and wellbeing of retired and semi-retired people in the local community by providing opportunities for learning, social interattion and recreational activities. CVu3a achieves this by or8anisin8: Interest groups covering a rdnge of educatlonal and recreatlonal topics (for example, art, gardenin8 and hlstoryl. Monthly talks wlth 8uest speakers on a variety of toplcs (for example, on history, 8eo8raphy and science). Social activities and visits {for example, to historic house5, museums and gardens). Opportunities for members to share knowledge. skills and experience. In carrying out these arttvitles, the Trustees have had full regard to the guidance issued by the Charities Commission on public benefit and that of the Third Age Trust. The membership fee paid by members secures membership of CVu3a only and does not secure rights to personal use of any facilities or services provided by CVu3a. Achlevements and Perforniante During the year ended 31 March 2026, CVu3a continued to provide a wide range of activities and intÈrest groups for its members. The Trustees believe that these actlvitles have continued to fulfil the charity's objectlves by providing opportunities for lifelong learning, social engagement and commonity participation. A few new Interest groups were started and a few closed due to their Convenors (group leaders) standing down and no-one steppin8 forward to replace them. This unwillingness to tske an active role in u3a Seems to be a wldespread problem, judging from discussions with other u3as. A major challenge for all u3as, Including CVu3a, is to recruit new and, ideally, youn8er members. Whilst there is no pressing requirement to grow the overall membership there is a need to replace members who, for one rea50n or another, do not renewtheir memberships. to provide a source of new Convenors and Committee Members. Membershlp increased to 631 during the year and the organisatlon contlnues to attrdct new members from the local community. Flnanclal Revlew The charity reported total income of £92.557 for the year ended 31 March 2026. Total expenditure during the year amounted to £93,392, primarily relating to venue hire, speaker expenses, 8roup activlfjes and adminlstrative costs. The charity recorded a deficit of £835 for the year. At 31 March 2026, the charity held total funds of £34,725, all of which were unrestricted. The trustees consider the financial position of the charlty to be satlsfactory and sufficient to support ongolng actlvlttes. Reserves Pollcv The Trustees aim to maintain reserves equal to about one year's subscription income. This is considered appropriate for ensurin8 continuity of activities and managing unexpected costs. Reserves currently exceed this policy and are being 8rddually reduced by keeping membership subscriptions low. Plans for Future Perlods The Trustees intend to continue developing the rnnge of interest groups and social actlvitSes available to members.
