Number on the Electoral Role Christine Lightfoot, Sonia Finn, Sally, Annemarie, and Julie Stansbie have been added to the electoral role but sadly we lost Keith Stephenson, Barbara Stansbie and the Bertucci family. The new number for the electoral role stands at 49. ## 3. Report of the Proceedings of the Parochial Church Council The Parochial Church Council has the responsibility of co-operating with the Parish Priest, Father Philip Calvert and also of maintaining the Parish Centre. Policies relating to Health and Safety, the Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults and Substance abuse are all in place. Members are actively involved in the Church’s Community Work and also sit on the Day Centre Management and Social Sub-Committees. Four full PCC meetings were held during 2019. Reports are handed out prior to the meetings; this enables members to prepare any questions they wish to ask – or comments they wish to make – beforehand, leaving valuable time for discussion of other Church related topics. The PPC is chaired by the Parish Priest; it consists of the Church Wardens, the Deanery Synod Representatives, the Treasurer (ex officio) and other elected/co-opted members. Those whose names are on the Electoral Role elect the Church Wardens at the Annual Vestry Meeting and the members of the PCC at the APCM. Every third year they also elect the Deanery Synod Representatives. In 2019, the following were members of the PCC Chair Father Philip Calvert Lay Chair John Biddell Secretary Sheila Chadwick Treasurer Jennifer Orgill Wardens Sheila Chadwick John Whitehouse Deanery Synod Reps Rosemarie Stephenson, Judy Watts-James Other Elected Members Maureen Hall, Beryl Jones, Pat Plant, Chris Richards, Gill Barker, Veronica Eagle, Jane Davis. Keith Airey was co-opted at the first meeting. The following were also voted for these offices Electoral Role Officer Maureen Hall Safe Guarding Officer Keith Airey Children Jane Davis As usual there was a short discussion after the meeting most of which will be followed up in more detail at future PCC meetings. The Church Wardens’ Report on Fabric Goods and Ornaments First, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome John Whitehouse who has kindly agreed to stand as Church Warden alongside me. One of our first tasks was to organise the repair of the bell in the bell tower. It needed a total replacement of the control box on the wall opposite the kitchen. At our visitation meeting with the new Arch Deacon she commented on the state of the driveway and the sky lights in the Narthex. This was put on the next PCC Agenda and everyone agreed that we should draw down the money from funds to pay for both repairs. John very kindly said to me he would look into both of these projects. I must say that he has worked extremely hard at bringing these two projects about. By the end of December, the Sky lights are waiting for the frames to be made. We are hoping to get the driveway completed during the summer. Whilst all this has been going on, we have had the usual repairs because it is an old building. Sensors failing in the gent’s toilets, and we had to replace the light switch by the vestry door. We also found the control box for the bell tower had to be lowered. Lastly but certainly not least the blind in the sanctuary was gifted by Rosemarie in loving memory of her husband Keith Stephenson. John and I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Fr Philip for the wonderful Masses he gives us every Sunday and also for our daily masses during the week. He works tirelessly on our behalf and I know many of you do not see the amount of work involved behind the scenes. Sheila Chadwick and John Whitehouse ## 6. Report on the Deanery Synod This year has been one of great change for Handsworth Deanery as in line with the aims of people and places we approved the decision to join with Central Deanery. We have had 4 meetings this year, the first being Handsworth Deanery day on the 12[th] January at Saint Andrews Church where we enjoyed a great day of fellowship and were treated to a delicious lunch. 2[nd] March Handsworth and Central Deaneries met at Saint Mary’s where it was agreed that the two Deaneries would merge and that any funds held by each of the Deaneries would be put into a joint fund. On 9[th] May Handsworth and Central Deaneries held another joint meeting at Gas Street Church where those present had the opportunity to express any concerns that they had about the merger and a final vote was taken to approve the decision to merge. The Deanery of Handsworth and Central came into being on the 1[st] August 2019. The first synod of the new merged Deanery took place on the 17[th] October at Saint Mary’s. It was agreed that a committee would be formed to be involved in the appointment of the new area Dean. Revd Douglas Machiridza has been appointed as Area Dean, he will be licenced on 29[th] March 2020 at Saint Martins in the Bull Ring. ## 7. Mothers’ Union Report It has been a rather quiet year for Saint Mark’s branch of the Mothers Union, with our membership reduced to 4 we have continued to hold monthly meetings in members homes beginning each meeting with a short service which has been prepared and led by one of the members. In February we attended the annual Diocesan Festival at Saint Philips Cathedral which was led by Bishop David Urquhart during which our new Diocesan President, Deirdre Moll was commissioned. At the beginning of the year much of our focus was on how we could make our branch more appealing and thus encourage new members to join us and it was with great joy that we held a service on August 8[th] at which Fr Philip and Zena Beard were enrolled by Deirdre Moll. In September we joined with some past members for what has become known as our birthday meal (so named because at one time 4 of our then members had birthdays in September) and an evening of good company and good food was enjoyed by all at Farmer John’s. ## 8. Social Sub-Committee Report The year 2019 was a very busy time for Saint Mark’s social activities. The most notable being the Summer and Christmas Fairs. Both events raised a good amount for Church funds, and was a source of much enjoyment for all concerned. But the turn outs could have been better. The attendance to the rest of the events throughout the year has proved a great success and has raised a lot of money during the course of the year. We have really good support for quiz, race night and family fortunes they have become really popular. The year ended with a memorable evening at Westfield Court for our annual Christmas Meal which everyone enjoyed immensely. John Whitehouse ## 9. Report on Children’s Work During the past year the children have involved themselves in a variety of crafts an activities which have helped them enjoy and learn about Jesus and his Jewish upbringing. The children’s leaders have prepared well for each session. The attendance of the children has been very sporadic and the age range can be quite varied. Nevertheless, we continue to be positive and ask the Lord to keep us from being dismayed when the children are absent. We look forward to a new year of commitment. Jane, Zena, Jenna, Jenny. ## 10.Community Development, incorporating Saint Mark’s Community Hub Management Report 2019 saw the numbers attending the day centre gradually rise, 12 months on from the restructure the attendance figures were up 10%. This is quite an achievement as sadly we lose members during the course of the year. Of the people on the register at the start of 2019, at least 21 were no longer with us at the year end and that number would be higher for those who join and left within the year. Our membership has risen over the year from 50 to 55. In July 2019 we had an inspection by the Birmingham Adult social care team they were extremely pleased with what they saw. They concluded that St. Mark’s Day Centre is a happy well-run centre. We have continued to build stronger links with the social worker teams and there is now a steady stream of referrals from them, particularly now these are dealt with promptly. This included taking on several new members when the day centre they were attending closed at short notice. Discussions around funding continue with the commissioners, they realise that getting a full picture of what is going on in the city is difficult to assess. The voluntary sector continue to should the burden of supporting many older people. Throughout the year the day centre staff have organised various special events for the members, such as a river cruise and a visit to the pantomime. There is also regular entertainment brought into the centre. The wider Community Hub activities continue to develop. Our young at heart trips are always popular, these included Willenhall lock museum, Sudeley Castle and Arley Arboretum. Our card making group continues to have a loyal following as does Friday Lunch. The Community Choir has got off to a good start and already performed at three events, we could do with more members. The fortnightly history group is gradually uncovering some quite fascinating things about the area as well as hearing member’s life stories. Looking at old maps of the area we are quite certain that the Kings Standing Lodge was where St. Mark’s stands today. A neighbour has said that he has discovered some quite interesting things in his garden which adds further evidence. As the Kingstanding mound is only a short distance away this seems a reasonable conclusion. Of course, our address is also part of the history, as the Monks from Maryvale played Bandy in the woods here, it is quite reasonable to assume that we now have a local saint of our own, John Henry Newman who walked on our grounds. We need to thank the staff for all their work, Charlotte, Sue, Marilyn, Dave (Marsh), Martin, Sarah and Vicky. During the year we said goodbye to two drivers David Evans and Geoffrey Little and we welcomed Alvin Brandy and Mark Dunlop. Also, thanks to our volunteers, Shirley, Gail, Zoe, Rosa and David (Timms). Each year we apply to a number of charities and trusts for support and in 2019 nearly a quarter of our income came from them, without their help we simply could not survive. It is a very time-consuming exercise in applying, they do not come to us. We particularly need to thank Tesco’s who included us in their Bags of Help scheme. We were granted a £1000.00 with this we were able to replace the central lights in the hall with more energy efficient units. These turned out to be very easy to install, will be cheaper to run and are much brighter. We have also purchased a CCTV system for the hall for the safety of hall users and security. Other charities who provide funds are, Alfred Haines, Peddimore Community Fund, Ageing Better, Thrive (they provide the majority of my salary). Eveson Trust, Archer Trust, Grimmett Trust, The Roughley Trust, Handsworth Charity and CB and HH Taylor. Keith Airey ## 11. Parish Priest’s Report to the APCM,2020. This annual meeting of church members gives me, your parish priest, the opportunity to express my grateful thanks to all those who have given of their time, their gifts and talents, their love, care and attention into Saint Mark’s Church over the past year, and to mark the passing of those of our church family who have won the race kept the faith and have now passed through the veil of death to join the Church triumphant, and whom, now, worshipping before His throne of glory, intercede with the Father for us who labour here below. We bid a fond farewell to Barbara Stansbie and Keith Stephenson in 2019: may they and all the faithful departed rest in well-earned heavenly peace. We hold their loved ones in our thoughts and prayers. I offer my personal thanks to all who have served on the Parochial Church Council over the past 12 months and to our wardens, Sheila Chadwick (who also acts as PCC secretary) and John Whitehouse (who took over from Zena Bill), our Treasurer Jenny Orgill. Thanks also go to the staff and volunteers who work in our Day Centre and Keith Airey, our Community Development Officer, who fund -raises for the Church and the Community Hub, looks after the finances of the Day Centre, keeps the mini- buses on the road and runs the various Community Hub activities with the help of Beryl, Judy and various other members of the congregation. Thanks also for his playing the organ and piano and operating the video screens at Sunday Mass. Thank you also to my dear wife, Tracey, who cleans the Parish Centre and to the small band of volunteers who provide refreshments on a Sunday and who clean the church and arrange flowers, not forgetting my alter- servers , many of whom are on duty practically every week, and those who read, lead the intersessions (several of who write their own prayers), and those who welcome, bring up the offertory gifts and take the collection. Last but not least the Sunday-school leaders who work hard to prepare enjoyable and instructive lessons for our small group of children as they seek to pass on the faith to the next generation. Every one of you helps to keep St Mark’s going day by day and week by week. Thank you all. We have a small but faithful congregation here at St Marks who make this a special place to worship and as your parish priest I give thanks to God for each and every one of you. Having a small congregation means that a larger portion of you have to get involved by using your gifts and talents and giving of your time in the upkeep of the Church and the running of the various activities which take place. This has to be a good thing, for the more of you involved, the more you are able to feel you are contributing to our shared mission of making known to those around us the Good News about our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who Himself gave us the perfect example of humble service to copy when He washed his disciples’ feet at the Last Supper. There will no doubt be someone whom I have omitted to mention and thank here. Be assured everything that each and every one of you do is valued and appreciated not only by me but by God who sees everything we do and knows we do it all for love of Him and his Holy Church.
