Chairs Report: Lynn B Welcome to the Columba Centre 2022 AGM.
The past year started with Covid-19 restrictions still partially in place, so the 2021 AGM was postponed until June. Reopening of the Centre did not take place until 12th April when classes were able to restart with certain COVID rules still in place. The attendance at the AGM was not visited by anyone other
than the sitting Trustees who in turn stepped down from their current positions. Happily all past Trustees were willing to serve a further year on the board of Trustees.
During 2022 our aim was to further improve the building and with the help of government funding we were able to have a new entry system installed thus allowing regular clubs and groups to gain entry without Trustee being present. A major expense during 2021 was to have the windows of the Vyvyan Room refurbished. This task was taken on singlehandedly and was completed in 6 weeks. The result means there are no draughts coming in though or heat escaping out.
During the Christmas period we held several craft and art fayres and on the evening of the Town Xmas light switch on we had a great fundraising fayre. The Rotary Club of St Columb once again used the Vyvyan Room as their grotto and were very busy with children excited to see Santa.
Early in the new year we hasted a “trash to treasure” sale which proved popular and in February we resumed our monthly community and cafe markets.
A new website was set up and has proved to be an asset, people can see availability of hall hiring and also find out what is actually going on during the week.
Unfortunately with the rising price of gas and electricity we have had to slightly increase our hiring charges and will endeavour to check out any, if any, increases each January. Whilst we are a small working party, good progress has been made ensuring the upkeep of the building. This coming year our aim is to get the stage up and running, we already have a new light and music system in place so maybe soon theatrical parties or shows can be held here once again.
Lastly, I must thank Felicity, our treasurer, Shan, our secretary, and Barry our online banking and utilities expert, along with Lynn, vice chairman for all their hard work during 2021-2022. I am also pleased to report Jane and Malcolm have joined us as friends of the Columba Centre and Jane wishes to become a Trustee.
Regards Lyn Bunt
The Board thanked Lynn B for her hard work and leadership.
Treasurers report: Felicity Penneycard
Treasurer’s report to the AGM re the accounts for the year ended 31 December 2021
Annual financial report for the year ended 31 December 2021
As noted last year, the Charity Commissioners do not require an audit nor an independent examination of the accounts. However, in previous years, the Trustees have been of the opinion that such an examination is beneficial and Phil Tremain, our Independent Examiner, conducted an examination after the financial statements had been approved by the Trustees.
Introduction
During the year, the country began to open up after the strict Covid-19 lockdown of the previous year. Income from room hire was approximately the same as in 2020 at £6,605 but market receipts and revenues from other events, including Harmoniemusik and Bingo recovered to £1,617 compared to £185 in the previous year. As in the previous year, a key source of income was grants, mainly from Cornwall Council, of more than £17,000. This was mostly spent on improvements and refurbishment to the building and a new power and AV system.
Total income of £27,265 exceeded expenditure of £21,572 by £5,693. The most significant elements of expenditure were nearly £10,000 on the new power and AV installation, £3,650 on a superb restoration of the Vyvyan Room windows and £400 on building a new website.
Room utilisation and costs
Room hiring remained low due to Covid19. Income was £6,605 for the year, an increase of only 2.5% compared to the previous year.
Income from other activities
On the other hand, we had six community markets (compared to one in the previous year), a bingo session and, although a reduced level of catering compared to normal years, there was a Harmoniemusik Festival, all resulting in total income of £1,617.
Bad debts
Despite writing to her, we have received nothing from Angela Barrasin in respect of her unpaid debt of £40 invoiced on 1 December 2018 and, so, have reluctantly concluded to expend no further effort in attempting to recover it and have written off the debt, now more than three years old.
Future plans
Additional funds are required to execute further improvements for the benefit of local users, for example:
-
Main Hall – refurbishment of stage and dressing rooms and the kitchen;
-
External paintwork
-
Car Park – clean-up surface and introduce perimeter planting.
-
This will raise the Centre to a new level that will result in further hiring opportunities.
