In late 2021, our minister curtailed her appointment after four years. This took place later than the main round of stationing, making it difficult to find a replacement. The Chairman of the District arranged for another minister within the district to work for 25% of his time in our circuit, providing us with a safe pair of hands to lead us through this year.

Before leaving us, our previous minister has led us through a process that would make all four churches within our circuit into one church on four sites - in name only, at this point. It will take several years before all the finances and the administration issues are resolved, including two churches changing from separate charities into one.

We also began a process to see whether all four churches in the circuit were financially viable, following the pandemic, when our finances were hugely damaged.

Early in the church year the new appointment for a longer-term minister was made on the understanding that she too would lead us into merging with two other circuits within Trafford – our local authority.

So, administratively, there have been huge changes afoot on every level, requiring many meetings with difficult negotiations, brought on more quickly than expected, by the effects of the Covid pandemic.

Worship has returned almost to normal, except on the fourth Sunday, the congregation is asked to ‘explore’ other churches. The purpose is twofold: firstly, to enable the people who identify closely with their own church to get to know people from other churches, especially in the light of us becoming ’one c hurch’; secondly, we are very short of local preachers and it saves yet another local arrangement(LA) in each church every month. This seems to work very well and people are much more willing to visit other churches.

On a wider level, we have held several Messy Churches and Tiny Praises very successfully. The annual Remembrance Service was very well attended with people standing in the aisles again. At Christmas, we collected toys again for Mission Christmas to be given to children living in poverty in Greater Manchester. These were left in designated boxes around the building or brought to the Toy Service, which also included an ‘instant’ nativity service. The following week, we held a ‘lessons and carols’ service and on Christmas Eve, the Christingle service was very well attended outside in the car park. When both the Manchester Marathon and the Altrincham Festival took place, passing by the front of the church, we ran a café and activities to engage with the crowd outside. Finally, the Gift Day and Anniversary weekend brought the opportunity for more engagement amongst the congregation and to raise much-needed funds for the church.

Due to the ‘one church’, meetings have reduced this year, so that we only held one council council and one circuit meeting per quarter, freeing some people up to do more mission, rather than admin.

Our membership has continued to decline a little due to deaths of members. One particularly shocking death was that of the leader of the Girls’ Brigade leader and a very active member of the church leadership team, who died unexpectedly in April, leaving a huge gap. People have taken over the roles she took, but generally this has meant that people who were already being stretched are being stretched even more.

Our building is slowly deteriorating, driving us back to a plan of a few years ago to redevelop the site, selling more than half the land and rebuilding the church. In the short term, we are only spending money on repairs that are non-negotiable to keep the building open.

Things were deteriorating financially and the future was becoming an increasingly worrying picture. A member of the congregation died, leaving us a bequest of £20,000 and a local group, educating young people who cannot access further education, asked to move to our premises, giving us a regular income that makes our future look much healthier than it has done. They haven’t moved yet, but intend to do so in the new academic year.

Overall, August 2023 sees us feeling more optimistic about the future.

The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act) and that an independent examination is needed.

Basis of Independent Examiner’s Report

My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair' view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

Independent Examiner’s Statement

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention (other than that disclosed below*):

(1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act;

• to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Charities Act have not been met; or

(2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
