## **Annual Trustees Report for Soundwaves Music Project 2020-21**

## **Chief Officer Statement**

**This is very different from our usual Annual report; we have carried out no activities in this year due to the Covid Pandemic. Therefore, this is more of a statement to support the accounts, that shows how Covid has impacted on Soundwaves.**

**Just before the beginning of this financial year the UK Government announced that we were going to go into a lockdown to try and curb the spread of Coronavirus – Covid 19. This meant that every part of our society, except for emergency services and supermarkets had to close down, including all charitable activities. At the beginning it was unclear what exactly this was going to mean, in terms of length of time and when we would be able to restart our normal activities.**

**Like lots of businesses, for Soundwaves it meant a loss of all our income streams: from our weekly subs paid by members to, what has become, an annual grant from Glastonbury Festival.**

**Fortunately, the Government soon announced a scheme that was going to try to keep people’s jobs. The ‘Employment Retention Scheme’ meant we could put our entire staff team on Furlough and claim 80% of their pay back from the Government. Of course, we didn’t know how long it would last but a quick financial assessment showed that we could make up the difference in wages, without it having a significant impact on the charity. Except for our finance officer, who we needed to claim the money back from the scheme, operate the payroll and keep financial records up to date, we were all furloughed. Sadly, we have lost our newest member of staff who has had to leave to be able to meet other work commitments**

**Forward a year, nearly, to the end of March 2021 and the situation has changed very little. There was a brief glimmer of hope at the end of 2020 that the lockdown maybe coming to an end and so we began to plan a way back to doing what we do. We hatched a plan to be able to do visits to people’s homes and run activities in their gardens or in local parks but, unfortunately, this didn’t come to be as the pandemic increased its grip and we went into a further lockdown.**

**The only thing we could do was try to do some online music sessions, to try and keep people engaged and, at least, provide a platform for a bit of social interaction for our group members. This has been reasonably successful, although we are not looking to charge to run this service, and it will continue into the next financial year. The other piece of major work has been developing a partnership project with Magic Carpet, D’arts and Get Changed Theatre – this was also put on hold for most of the year, with just one short online meeting between the partners and the National Lottery who are funding this piece of work.**

**So, there it is, the strangest year for everyone and certainly one that does not warrant a full annual report. I would like to thank J Van Mars Foundation for continuing to help us with their annual donation, as this has really helped soak up most of the financial impact of putting everything on hold. I’d also like to thank our trustees for sticking by us and, indeed, welcome new Trustee, Mr Ed Pitman, who we hope will love us and become our new chair.**

**Despite this strange set of circumstances Soundwaves enters into the next financial year in its strongest financial shape since we began back in 2008.**

**At this point in time, we really don’t know what the future holds and whether we’ll ever get back to running a large group again. We continue to hope that everyone remains well and that we will see everyone, eventually.**

**The Covid pandemic means that Soundwaves must rethink how it moves forward to support people, when we do emerge from this situation. We may have to revise what it is exactly we do offer to people, perhaps a more personcentered approach.**

**It’s too soon to know yet but I am confident we will be back, maybe different, but will still be fun. It will be interesting to see this statement next year and compare not only the two years but Soundwaves before and after the pandemic.**
