Letter from the Chair
On behalf of the Board of Trustees of LAFF, I hope that this letter finds you and your friends and family well.
It has been another turbulent year for us all as we have had to face rising prices and uncertainty. Peru has not been immune to these challenges. Rising prices have hit the already disadvantaged hardest, and political instability, turning to wide spread protests earlier this year, have caused disruption and insecurity. The young people we support have been uniquely vulnerable to these challenges. LAFF’s support, enabled by our incredible supporters, has been as important as ever to provide the stability, safety, and support they need and deserve.
I continue to be inspired every day by the positivity, resilience, and determination of the children and young people we work with across our four partners in Cusco and the Sacred Valley. Despite their difficult backgrounds and the challenging situation around them, they continue to smile, play, and strive for a brighter future for themselves and their families.
At LAFF, we believe in the transformative power of education to achieve just that. We’re proud to work with local community partners to provide access to quality education and all the resources students need to reach their full potential in school. Our tutors help the students to overcome individual learning challenges and catch up with their peers. And the personal development workshops we run help the young people to build skills and confidence to thrive as independent, successful adults in the future.
One of our core values is partnership: we work with four amazing partner organisations, each rooted in their community and so able to best reach the most in need. Through our partners, we are able to provide the most relevant and impactful support. Located in the historic city of Cusco and beautiful Sacred Valley, our partners provide the safe homes, nurturing support, and stability that the young people need to continue and make the most of their education to build brighter futures.

This year has been especially exciting for LAFF. For the first time, we have hired a second member of staff to work on the ground in Peru. Amapola joined us in September 2022 as LAFF’s first ever Programme Coordinator to deliver our programmes with our partners. With Amapola joining the team alongside our fantastic Programme Manager, Alma, we’ve seen the programmes reach new heights and we’re excited for the year to come.
I would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to both Alma and Amapola for continuing to lead with integrity and deliver impact for the young people in Peru, and to say thank you to the amazing volunteers who make LAFF’s work possible. The dedication, enthusiasm, and dynamism of the volunteers who work with us to deliver our mission is yet another inspiration.
I would also like to express our sincerest gratitude to everyone who has made a donation to LAFF in the past year. Without the generosity and support of our donors, LAFF simply would not be able to continue to deliver life-changing programmes for some of Peru’s most vulnerable young people. Thank you.
I am proud to present this 2022-23 Annual Report, in which you read about the inspiring work of our team in Peru, and the even more inspiring young people with whom we work. LAFF continues to deliver lifechanging support to the most vulnerable young people. From everyday tutoring to drama workshops, IT skills to female empowerment, sports days to pub quizzes, it’s been an exciting year. I hope you find the rest of this document as inspiring as I do.

Mosqoy
Mosqoy aims to empower Quechuan communities by preserving their culture and creating space for them in modern Peru. LAFF mainly supports its Youth Programme which offers full scholarships to high potential students from rural areas to follow a professional path. Through their education, they can access greater opportunities for themselves and their communities.
Sacred Valley Project
The Sacred Valley Project facilitates access to education for indigenous girls from the highlands of Peru where there are no schools, by providing dorms for them to stay which are in the proximity of a school they can attend. The girls also receive personalised academic support through SVP’s tutoring programme as well as personal development support.
Casa Mantay
Casa Mantay is a safe haven for teenage mothers who have suffered abuse. Mantay provides a nurturing space for the girls to be mothers while completing their education and receiving the tools to achieve autonomy. The young mothers also learn vocational skills through Mantay’s leather, silver and floral art workshops.
Azul Wasi
Azul Wasi provides a home and family for boys aged 6-18 years old who have lost their parents, come from unstable or unsafe family backgrounds, situations of abandonment or poverty. Azul Wasi offers a safe place for the boys to receive academic and emotional support to aid their personal development, overcome their challenges and complete their education.

Tutoring Spotlight: An interview with Sandra
Sandra has been working as a tutor at Casa Mantay for 3 years this summer. Her salary is funded entirely by LAFF and she assists the young mothers at Casa Mantay with their specialised programme modules.
Sandra teaches the girls maths, communications and science within a safe space where they feel supported and encouraged, and also carries out activities focused on their personal development. On Friday she takes the time to carry out engaging educational activities such as origami, drawing and symmetry which also develops the girls' patience skills and help them to focus.
Her highlights have been being able to connect with the girls and understand where they are coming from. ‘I feel fulfilled by being able to see them smile and laugh and know them not just as mothers’. The valuable work Sandra does directly contributes towards LAFF's vision by providing these young mothers with education and equal life opportunities. This is just one example of how LAFF spends the generous donations we receive and how they positively impact the lives of our beneficiaries.

Over the past year, LAFF has paid for essential tools such as personal laptops, computers, internet access, uniforms, transportation to school and to the institute and school fees to facilitate their educations.

Why we do what we do
The educational situation in Peru
Three years after the pandemic, Peru is experiencing a slow but steady recovery with respect to education. Despite significant initial dropout rates as classes moved online, children across the country returned to inperson teaching at the beginning of the school year in February 2022.
Nevertheless, challenges and divisions to educational access remain, many of which were made both more apparent and more severe by the pandemic. For instance, in rural areas 485,000 additional children aged 14-18 had to join the workforce in 2020. According to the World Bank, Peru continues to be one of the least equitable countries in South America in terms of education.
The Cusco region where LAFF operates is no stranger to Peru’s educational divides. At present, it is estimated that 81.5% of children in Cusco complete their primary education and only 62% of teenagers complete their secondary education in the region. There are also extreme pockets of deprivation in particular areas such as Paucartambo, where 6/10 students suffer from anaemia, having a serious detrimental effect on their capacity and educational progress.
Additionally, from December 2022 through to February 2023, Peru experienced some of its worst political protests in years, which were felt
particularly heavily in the country’s southern regions, of which Cusco is one. Roadblocks prevented access to gas, fuel, wheat, and vegetables and over 50 people were killed. As these protests coincided with the annual school break, disruption to education was kept to a minimum, however they have highlighted the ever-increasing importance of building our partners’ resilience and capacity, so that they are able to continue to deliver for their beneficiaries in times of crisis.
The past 3 years have been challenging for our partner organisations, creating an increasing reliance on LAFF with regards to delivering support to meet educational needs. As we now move out of this difficult period, we will look to have a greater focus on our capacity building programme to improve the sustainability of our partners and protect the futures of our beneficiaries.

Augustin is one of our beneficiaries at Mosqoy, from the isolated Andean community of Cancha Cancha in the region of Calca, and has completed his first two years studying tourism at a technical institute. He receives LAFF-subsidised tutoring to support him through his studies.
Augustin's training as a tour guide has allowed him to volunteer on the Inca Trail, which has taught him about his own culture and history, and many past traditions. He has also been able to improve his language skills; he is now fluent in Quechua, Spanish and English, which he loves using to connect and share knowledge with people from all over the world who come to visit Cusco.
Augustin's Story
Augustin has also benefited from the LAFF workshops he can attend at Mosqoy, as they have given him useful life skills and cultivated his knowledge and ideas about a range of topics. For example, through our financial literacy and job skills workshop he has had the opportunity to receive advice on CV writing and now feels more confident talking about himself in job interviews. He is thankful to have the space to process his ideas and reflect on them with his peers.
Regarding plans for the future, after finishing at Mosqoy Augustin would like to pursue a career as a tour guide on the Inca Trail with one of the many travel agencies based in Cusco, but his plans do not stop there. He eventually dreams of setting up his own business with his siblings, who also want to be tour guides, so that they can help more people who work in this sector and provide a service to his community back in Calca. The LAFF Careers Fair has opened his eyes to the many possibilities his future can hold.
Not all young people are equal in Peru, and if you are from a poor background, you simply don’t have the option to study at private universities like many of your peers. Mosqoy brings us everything we deserve and helps us achieve our dreams, so that we can have a way out of poverty and a more stable economic situation.

Updates from our programmes
Computer Aid Update
Last year we announced that we would be funding new IT Equipment for all of our partners. After several setbacks during the pandemic, 10 laptops and 10 computers finally reached us last October, and we had the pleasure of delivering them to our beneficiaries. Having working IT equipment and internet access is essential to receiving quality education in a post-Covid world, and is a luxury that many of our beneficiaries have not known until now, coming from isolated rural communities. The young boys and girls have used the new equipment to set up personal email addresses and access a plethora of online educational resources.
Mosqoy Covid Relief Package
As part of our commitment to building our partners’ capacity, in November 2022 we delivered a lump sum of $4000 to our partner Mosqoy. These funds intended to help the organisation recover from the debilitating impact of the pandemic so that beneficiary support was guaranteed. We also worked together to determine the best way to ensure Mosqoy's financial sustainability, discussing financial management tools which we will be working to deliver next year.
SVP Paucartambo Dorm Update
In early 2022 we shared the exciting news that our longtime partner SVP would be opening a third dormitory in the area of Paucartambo, which has historically had one of the highest rates of poverty in the Cusco region. We are pleased to report that the dormitory has had a successful first year, with 14 indigenous girls continuing to benefit from a safe home, school supplies, and personalised tutoring, all in part funded by LAFF . The local community has been very receptive to the project, even offering to cook free meals for the dormitory once a week, a testament to the value placed on education by those who need it most. Now that the Paucartambo dormitory has fully established itself, we look forward to organising more tailored workshops for the girls in the coming year.

As part of our mission to ensure the personal development of our beneficiaries, we provide a range of workshops throughout the year to grow their skills and prepare them to be independent, self-sufficient adults. This year we delivered a total of 7 workshops over 66 sessions.
Mantay Theatre Workshop
11 young mothers participated
April - July 2022
This 3-month workshop improved the confidence and self- esteem of young mothers which will help them in their post educational lives. They learned how to share their stories and express themselves using theatre elements as a tool, improving their communication skills. Additionally, it opened a discussion to reflect on their identity, as women, daughters, mothers, companions, friends and human beings. In the final session, the participants performed a rehearsed piece in front of an audience.

Global Girl Project at SVP
26 girls participated
May - July 2022 (Ollantaytambo Dorm) September - November 2022 (Calca Dorm)
The Global Girl Learning Initiative is a 3-month leadership and social change programme . Within the sessions, girls participated in activities that taught them about their power and voice as girls, learnt about different types of leadership, project planning and tools they could use to create change. In the final month, participants organised a community event to raise awareness on a community issue, the Ollantaytambo cohort chose “Education” and the Calca cohort chose “Gender Inequality in the Economy and Employment”. By the end of the programme 90% of the participants felt more confident with their presentation skills and 7 out of 10 participants felt very comfortable expressing their opinions about community issues and advocating for change.
LAFF Careers Fair

November 2022
During this 2-day event, students from all four of LAFF's partners were able to learn about different careers, ask questions and listen to young professionals share what their careers entailed. 29 out of 31 participants surveyed stated that the Careers Fair was very informative and helped them decide which area of study or which career path they wanted to follow . This was a wonderful opportunity to bring together our four partner organisations and for beneficiaries to exchange with each other.

Mosqoy’s Financial Literacy, Job Skills and Independent Living workshop
16 young adults participated
October - December 2022
Through this workshop participants were equipped with essential financial literacy and employability skills necessary for independent living. Participants felt more informed about preparing a CV, writing a motivation letter, and job interview skills, which therefore increased their chances of finding a job . They also learnt about labour rights and duties, employment contracts, how to manage their personal finances, importance of savings, all of which will contribute to them building brighter futures.
Azul Wasi Emotional Intelligence Workshop
17 young boys participated
February 2023
The Emotional Intelligence workshop taught participants the importance of recognising, regulating, and expressing emotions, while also improving their ability to communicate their feelings. They also developed a deeper comprehension of how these emotions manifest themselves. The activities of the sessions included educational games, drama and role plays. By the end of the workshop the majority of participants could better define their emotions in Spanish and English and recognise the emotions of others .

Carmencita has been working as a housemum and tutor at the SVP Ollantaytambo dorm for 5 years. We recently asked her to share her experiences working with the girls and with LAFF.
“SVP is a family and when you work in the dormitory, you take on the role of a mother, so you don’t have a set timetable. I work in the dormitory from 4pm on Sundays until 8am on Fridays, and I need to make myself completely available to the girls during this time. I see myself as both their personal and academic mentor, so they need to feel comfortable coming to speak to me about all aspects of their life, for example if they are ill or are having issues with their self-esteem. My relationship with them is based on equality and trust.
Housemom interview
The best thing about this job is the feeling that I am cultivating something positive in these girls. It is comforting when they give me a hug goodbye before they go to school, as it reassures me that there is trust there. It is an honour to be the person that helps these young women grow so that they are confident to take their own decisions and never let anyone infringe on their rights. For example, there was a girl in my dorm who I knew practically saw me as a mother, and now I get to watch her go to university. It's very gratifying and I’m so happy for her.
A typical day in the SVP dorm usually starts at 6am, when the girls get up and we have breakfast together as a family. The girls then go to school until 2pm while I run household errands. In the afternoon they have two hours of personalised tutoring from 4-6pm with myself or another one of the tutors at the dorm. LAFF has been a huge help with facilitating the girls’ lives here at SVP, by funding all tutoring costs, internet, school supplies and uniforms."

The LAFF community that makes it possible
We are thrilled to share that our team in Cusco has continued to grow now that we have returned to normal inperson operations.
This year LAFF added another full-time employee to the team, our Programmes Coordinator Amapola Pino Cruzado. Amapola is from Cusco and oversees our Quality Education programme, working directly with beneficiaries, tutors, and partners to expand our education and personal development activities and maximise our impact in this area. Her work has meant that we are able to dedicate more time and resources to these programmes than ever before.
In February 2023, for the first time since the pandemic, we were able to hold a LAFF team retreat . This was to Ausangate, the highest mountain in the Cusco region, where the team completed the challenging but beautiful 7 lakes hike over 2 days. The retreat was an excellent opportunity to bond and learn more about each other, as well as an important time to reflect on the work we carry out and the beneficiaries we support. The team left feeling more confident and comfortable with each other and have since been able to achieve more as a collective towards delivering LAFF's goals.

LAFF recognises the importance of having volunteers, who form an essential part of our team.
Our volunteer coordinators offer support in various areas including maintaining communications with the LAFF community, implementation of workshops, delivery of in-person events, organising campaigns, monitoring and evaluating, and internal operations. Without their efforts, we would not be able to carry out our work as effectively.

Spring Campaign March 2022
Our annual Spring campaign took shape as a photography competition to celebrate the remarkable women of our communities. Participants were asked to send in a photo of an inspiring woman in honour of International Women’s Day with their entry donation. We are extremely proud to have exceeded our target and would like to thank everyone who donated and took part as well as our judges and of course many congratulations to our first place winner, Yasser Alaa Mobarak!
Ride London May 2022
In May 2022, Richard Lewis, Jan Ogorzalek and Johnny Bray took on this demanding 100-mile cycling race to raise funds for LAFF. The scenic route starts in central London, continues through London and onto Essex before finishing back in central London. We were overwhelmed by the support the riders received. In total, they raised an incredible sum of £6,373 which has hugely helped LAFF support our beneficiaries and increase our impact.

Events and Campaigns
Big Give December 2022
The Big Give Christmas Challenge is the UK’s largest match funding campaign meaning that any donation received was doubled, made possible by our match funders, The Human Rights Trust and Solihull School. We were thrilled to raise 110% of our fundraising target. This would not have been possible without Solihull School, the Human Rights Trust and the John and Susan Bowers Foundation, who all helped us excel past our target. Through the collective efforts of our dedicated LAFF 'Big Givers' and our online supporters, we not only surpassed our initial fundraising goal, but raised more money compared to the previous years, resulting in a grand total of £6,575, including the match funding!
LAFF Pub Quiz AYR 2022
For the first time since the start of the pandemic, LAFF began hosting its very own weekly Pub Quiz in Cusco in July 2022. Every Tuesday our wonderful volunteers presented rounds in English and Spanish on a range of topics at the Cerveceria del Valle Sagrado, a local brewery that also supports our partner SVP. The pub quizzes were a great opportunity to build our presence in Cusco and raise awareness about the work we do among locals and tourists alike. In five months we managed to raise over 1500 soles (£355) for our beneficiaries.

Reserve policy
The Board of Trustees (the “Board”) has established a reserves policy to help manage the financial sustainability of both LAFF, and our partners, over the longer-term. In recent years, the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, political instability and various other social and economic factors have caused unprecedented uncertainty and risk both globally and in Peru. Consequently, the Board has reviewed its reserves policy and concluded that minimum target reserves should be between 6 and 8 months’ of expenditure. This will ensure LAFF’s resiliency and sustainability, and allow us to continue to support our beneficiaries should they, or we, be adversely impacted by unexpected events or difficulties.
The financial report for the current year on page 20 shows that closing reserves at 31 March 2023 were substantially higher than 6 to 8 months’ of expenditure. This is due to various factors including foreign exchange rates, timing differences and less predictable spending patterns as a result of the factors mentioned above. LAFF plans to utilize some of the excess reserves in the 2023-24 financial year and have already increased our funding commitments to some our partners where there is a need for additional funding.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended31 / 03 / 2023. As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”). I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. I have completed my examination. Legality

LAFF is registered as a Charitable Trust. Our Trust Deed defines the charity’s Objectives as being:

To relieve the suffering and distress of people in Latin America who have been afflicted by violence or abuse

The preservation and protection of good health among Latin American children.

The advancement of education, the promotion of good health, the relief of poverty among women and children in Latin America, in particular by supporting and assisting the charitable work of children’s welfare homes and women’s refuges.

The relief of financial hardship, either generally or individually, of people living in Latin America by making grants of money for providing or paying for items, services or facilities.
Trustee Obligations
The trustees have complied with their duty in section 4 of The Charities Act 2006 to have due regard to protect our public benefit guidance when exercising any powers or duties to which the guidance is relevant. Charity Trustees have given consideration to the major risks to which the charity is exposed and satisfied themselves that systems or procedures are established in order to manage those risks.
