The 2021-2022 year has probably been the most difficult for Dolcorsllwyn Hall since the current Charity took over the running of it from Brookfield High School in Kirkby in 1993. The income from visiting groups was nil as the Coronavirus epidemic resulted in the Trustees decision to close the Hall to all groups because of lock down rules in England & Wales & the banning of social gatherings. Fortunately the Hall is owned by the charity so no mortgage payments were required & oil & electricity bills were significantly reduced due to lack of groups using the Hall.
Work planned for the year were put on hold & it was decided that a major refurbishment of the upstairs rooms at the back of the house could be undertaken while the Hall was closed. This consisted of the corridor being moved, an extension to Dorm 3, an extended staff suite with shower room, a refurbished Dorm 4 and the installation of 2 new bathrooms with shower & bath. All walls needed plastering & new floors were installed throughout the area plus flooring & decoration throughout. As coronavirus rules differed in England & Wales, special permission was granted from Powys for this work to be undertaken by volunteers from Merseyside. We are eternally grateful to John Curran & Keith Owen for their heroic work on this project & if it wasn’t for them it would not have been completed.
The funding for the materials for above work was generously given by the B&Q Foundation, Awards for All & Amazon & PayPal Charities in addition to support from Powys County Council. All labour was generously given free of charge.
Hopefully the next year will see the return of visitors to the Hall. School & youth groups will benefit from the improved facilities & children who would not normally enjoy a holiday in the countryside will again make memories that will last for many years to come.
