## – New Hope for Africa (UK) 2020 Annual Trustee Report

## Objectives

The charity seeks to advance the life opportunities for disadvantaged children and young people in Uganda through the provision of education in a safe, caring environment and helping to develop independent, mature and responsible individuals.

## - Review of the year from June 2019 May 2020

The school continues to be licensed by the Ugandan Department of Education and Sport to teach the national curriculum to primary and secondary students; UNEB Centre No. U3257. Additional facilities exist for children of pre-school age.

During this period there were 651 pupils registered to attend school of which 323 live on site during term time, the remainder attend on a daily basis. The Nursery section has 87 pre-primary children, the Primary section 300 with 264 in the secondary school. The Nursery building was too small for this number of children and it was possible to provide the finances to extend the current building.

The cost of food has risen significantly and this has led to the children getting a poorer diet. It has been possible to introduce rice into the diet to boost the intake of protein and further financial support to improve nutrition has come from supporters in USA.

The outbreak of the Covid 19 pandemic resulted in the Ugandan government closing all school in March 2020. These restrictions required all term time boarders to return to their guardians and for the staff to attempt distance learning for day pupils. The majority of children living permanently at the school were “adopted” by local church members who received financial support from the charity to feed and care for those individuals. The remaining children stayed on site and were cared for by the staff of New Hope school.

Restrictions in the UK prevented planned fundraising events taking place but regular giving to the charity was unaffected.

The Ugandan government have given no indication when schools will be allowed to reopen.
