Physics Partners Limited
Chair's Report for the Year ended 31 August 2024
The choflty is governed by o Memorcndum and Article5 of Association ond was established
in June 2007, changing its name to Physics Partners Ltd in November 2015. The purpose of
the charity is to advance education by raising standards of teaching in schools, in particular
the teaching of physics. This purpose 15 primarily met through delivering troining to those
teaching physics, as well as to science technicians.
In 2023-24, Phy3iC5 Portner5 provided over 3,200 hours of physics support to teachers,
technicians, and students-a 40fo increase compared to the previous year. This growth
reflects the charity's commilment to expanding its reach and impacl. A total of 163 training
sessions were delivered, with ??% of participants rating the quality as "good" or excellent.
The significant increase in support hours was driven by a locus on more student-centered
activities, including a Birmirigham study day, a week-long Girls in STEM event in Brighton and
Hove, and a competition for Year 12 pupils from state schools.
Partnerships wilh Future First and the Oxford University Deportment of Physics provided
contracted incoine, and so training income greatly increased this year. The Planet Possibility
programme, a sub-contract from Future First, offered online sessions focusing on physics
subject knowledge and coreer development for teachers, as well as supporting videos on
thp Phy%ics Partnprs website. The Oxford Univprsity Dp.parlment of Physir.% c.ontract to deliver
a short video competition for year 12 Students raised the charity's profile. with almost l QO
schools entering.
Physics Partners are vcry aware of the national shortage of physics teachers, with the
Department for Education recruiting only 17% of its target for new physics teachers in recent
ypars. Physic.s skills uiidprpin two mi15ion jobs ac.ross productive iridustries in the UK and
Ireland. This year Physics Partners increased efforts to engage Initial Teacher Trainees and
Early Career Teachers who are vital in addressing this shortfall, and continued to focus
support on these groups. as well as the non-specialist teachers of physics.
Thanks to funding from The Ironmonger's Foundation, Physics Portners focused on engaging
schools in the Birmingham orea aller the pandemic caused o temporary disruption to our
previou5 operations. A Study Day for 180 sixth-form students in Birmingham was followed by
the launch of three new Physics Hubs. Attended by 26 teachers from 17 schools, these hubs
are now delivering in-person training ond support, further strenglhening the network of
physics educalors in the region.
In advancing educalion in tliis woy, Ihe Irustees have complied with Iheir duly to hove due
regard to the guidance provided by the Charily Commission on public benefit.
