we do Ihings. Slud8nls are our purpose, wher&v8r they find us and however thay engage we support them in their
lives and encourage thos6 who seek lo grow in faith.
We ar8 deeply committed to an Incluslve, progresglva and radlcal 8pproach to the Christian faith, and thls is evident
throughout the organisation from 8 grassroots level through to th8 board of truste6s. Our members lead us,
appolntlng representatives to th8 board of Truste8s and General Council who sel the vlslon and strategy of the
Charlty. Throughout our work we seek feedback from students and Ilsten tc thelr volces as we move ev8r onwards.
Our membership is made up of an incredible diversity of p80ple. Some gather in local communities on their
unlv8rslty ¢ampus or at their church, others come together al a regional 18vel through Informal networks, and for
some th8ir place of ¢onnectlon Is through our natlonal work, partlcularly onllne. Wherevar som8on& connacls with
SCM, our values ar6 pras&nt and our alms are worked towards. For som& SCM is a place to ask hard questlons and
be ch811enged by others who ar8 wr8slling wllh fallh and 8thIcs. For many, it is a safe Chrlstlan space to express
and settle in thelr queer Identlty. And for all, it Is a place where they can simply'be,.
SCM is more than lust a gathering plac8 for Chrlstlan students. We are also commilt8d to puttlng fallh Into actlon,
and throughout our long hlstory SCM has travelled light, devoting our8elves lo the n0Xt task or causa In the
evolution of Christianity. We are a movement for loday, and that means campaigning on currènt issues of concèrn
such as th8 rèfugee crlsis, th8 arms trade and modelllng LG8TQ+ celebration and pushing the church to do the
Same. It means giving a platform to new and eslabllshed theologians who encourag@ us and cha116nge us to grow In
our faith. As we pul our faith into action we often see our members becoming more confident as leaders, growing
as emerglng theologians, developlng as activists and flourishing in thalr dlsclpleshlp.

lo Unl, guld8. A team of studenl volunteers are supported by stsff to sh8re Informadon about SCM and how students
can gel involved in the lrfe of the movement as members and as part of student communitles. Volunlews also host
meel-ups for students and support8rs at the fesllval to Share the latest news from SCM and delails of up¢omlng
8V8nts.
Thr¢ughout the academlc year we support community leaders with resources on our website and through regular
communication from deslgnaled staff members via a messenger group wh8r8 th8y can sh8r8 Id8as and flTrJ
support. A suggested 'term c8rd' 18 also produced lo help loadors n8vigalo the wealth of resources available.
Recognising that the traditlonal unlversily society model is not always appropriate for SCM groups, we also support
¢hurch-based studenl groups and netsjorks of stud&nts in cities wh8r8 th8r8 are multiple unlv8rslti8s or campuses.
In th8 autumn terrn we $8nd a malling to All SCM members and supporters containing MDvemenl magazine and a
lem card of upcomlng events. Mov8m8nt Is our blannual student magazine edited by a member of our General
Council and Irieludes news from the nation81 movemant and SCM communities, an inteNiew, book revlews and
articles written by students and guest writers. The magazine is also distributed at fostivals and ovonts, sent to
supportlng churches and chaplaincles. and deposited at the Brltlsh Llbrary.
Each Advgnt and Spring we send Falth in Action toolkits to our members whlch contain a pray8r activity, an action
prompt and a small glft based on a particular theme or toplc. Prevlous toolkits have focused on topics such as
issu8s fac8d by r8fugees, actsvism, prayer and mentsl health, and have includ8d it8ms such as icfjn pray8r stations,
seeds to planl, Christmas docorations and sweet Ireals.
Once students get settled into the rhythm of the academic year our staff, including our Faith In Action project
workgr8, start lo run workshops and outreach evènts with SCM communities on a range of topics from dlscipleship
to activlsm, These workshops and vlsits continue through th8 Sprlng tgrm untll th8 Easler exam season.
Prayer is an essential part of our Christian faith, and one of the ways we highlight its importance is that each
February we mark the Unlversal Day of Prayer for Students, or Student Sunday, wllh a short onllne servlce. and by
invillng SCM communlties, chaplalncles and churches to do th8 same wilh the resources we create. Student
Sunday is celebrated around the world by memb8r8 of the World Student Christian Federation, and 18 a great
opportunlty for us to come together with students around the world and to pray for on8 another.
Throughout the year we run regional and national events to bring sludents together to explore Ihei r faith and to build
a sanse of community Ihroughoul the movement. These include online seminars and discussion groups, day
events, and residenlial 8v8nts, and f8ature guest speakers and workshops on a range of topics. An integral part of
these events is the time spent in prayer and worship, giving students the opportunity to experience a variety of
expression6 of faith.

As a student-led charlty, the AGM is an Important event In the annu81 c81endar as it provldes the movement with an
opportunity to elecl representatives and trusl8es to General Council {GCI. tha decision-making body of the
movement. It is also an opportunlty for GC and staff to report back to the wlder movement aboLrt thew work over the
past year and ask for thelr Input on future plans. In rgcent years the AGM has been held onllne. making It more
acce88ible for our members who would not be able to allend an event in parson.
Another hlghlight in the calendar is thè SCM Natlonal Gathering whlch tskes place each summer and Is an
opportunlly for students to gather and spend lime together ￿MMUnity whlle hearlng from Inspirlng speakers and
belng challenged through workshops.

The Faith In Adlon Project, run In collaboratlon with Project Bonhoeffer, seeks to..
incr8ase tha ur)d&rslanding of Bonho8ffer'8 approach to faitli and the meaning of Christian Di8cipleship
amongst student5 and recent gradual&s,
enable students and rocent graduates to reflect thaologlcally on their lif8, work and study, and IIv8 Out th8ir
faith in action
develop the skills and confidenc8 of students and recent graduates to challenge the slruGtures of inluslice
and b8 leaders of social and politlcal transfomiatlon.
Since its inception in 2012, the project has employed 18 staff and led to Ihe creation of numerous resource5
Including workshops and Blb18 Studle8, a Theologl¢81 Reflection Journal and a Called to Be vocalions resource. In
addltlon the proleGI has supportgd the ¢reatlon of a 'Llttle Book of...
sarles, whlch conslst$ of small pocket-slzad
books that are part-devotional, part-workbook. Past editions have included The Little Book of P8ac8, croatod in
conjunction with the Fellowship of Raconclllatlon, and The Little Book of Prol8St, a book of 11p$ and storles of
posltlvé Change.
In Ils curr8nl formal, Ihe proj8Ct èmploys two recent graduates as proj8Ct workers, on8 an activlst lo Inspire oth8r
8clivists (th8 'Soclal Justlc8 prole¢t workgr'l, and the other a theololllan to rrak6 other Ihoologians Itha 'Th601ogy
and Resourc@s project worker'l. The Social Justice project worker SUPPDrls stsjdents to discern where their faith Is
calling them lo tske actlon and provides resources lo facllltate campaigning. The Theology and Resources project
worker hr41ps students to explore the work and theology of Dietrich Bonhoffer, ongago in theological reflection and to
share their reflections with Ihe wider movement through the SCM blog.
Th8 Dlgltal Comrnunltles project Involves an 8nhancèm6nt of the online work that was start8d durlng tha Covid-19
pandemlc, which includ8d weakly soclals and theology seminars held onllne, whllst adaptlng to the new post-
pandemic needs of students. The project aims to strenglhen the faith of our members by equlpping them with a
doepened theological understandlng and exp8r1en￿ of disclpleship In the 21st century.
Tho digital communiti88 proJe¢t has also enabled us to make SCM morg accessible to those on the e(kJes of th8
m¢vem8nt who are not part of local communities Ihrough provldlng opportunilies for thém to participate in
workshops and events onllne. Addilionally live-streamlng the keynote lalks at national SCM ev6nls allows those who
are unable to attend in person lo ongaga in the dlscusslon.
Members of SCM'S General Councll also run onllne groups relating to thèlr portfollos for LGBTQ* students and
disabléd students, creating communities whero m&mb8rs can support one another.
Affirml
The Affirming Christianity project aims to develop a series of short ￿)UrseS offering support to groups and churches
as they seek lo deepen their progressive falth. Planned courses include 'How lo be a Good Christian Ally,, run in
ollaboration vwth the Open Theology Trust and One Body One Faith, and 'Progre88ive Evangelism, run in
collaboration with the Urban Theology Union.

Sustalnablllty
In order to ensure that SCM'S actlvlties are more 8ustalnable In the long temi, th8 trustees and staff have taken
various action8 to secure the future of the movement Operationally and financially. To ensure good leadership of th8
charity a Iralning programme for th8 trustees has beeri pul Into place, wlth all trustees receiving indu¢lion and
r8fresh8r tralnlng each year. Tho trustees a150 undertake trustee speciflc safeguardlng Iralnlng at least on¢e durlng
their term of office. Th8 truste8s regulat1y revlew stsfflng to ensure that the structure of th6 Staff team best r8sponds
to the needs of the organisation. A fundralslng strategy has also been adopted, and the trustees hav6 a clear
Investments and r8saNes pollcy to 9nsure that SCM'S financial assets ar& well ulilised.
Safeguardlng
Trustees and 8taff take their Safeguardlng responsibllities very seriously and have adopted a Safeguarding Policy
covering all aspects of SCM'S work which is reviow8d annually. Th8 trust6es have appointed a designated
Safeguarding Laad to ensure Ihat safeguardlng procedures are followed, and a m8mb8r of Gener81 Council holds
th8 Safèguardlng portfolio 10 5UPPOrt this. SCM is a member of thirtyone'.elght, an Independent Chrisllan charlty th8t
provides safeguarding support, training and resources.
All truslaès and staff attend training regularly, includlng training cov8ring trusl888' responsibilitie3, Safeguardlng
vulnerable adults, safer recruitment and the role of the safeguardlng lead. Slaff and some volunteers are also
sublecl lo DBS checks as part of the re¢nJitment process.
Contributlon of volunto8r8
SCM Is fortunate to be well 8UPPOrted by volunte6rs in various aspects of our work. A small number of voluntèèrs
have glven their time lo complete administrative tasks such as assisting wilh mailings and data entry, and have
r8pr8serited the Charity al ¢onferences held by other organisations and fesllval events. Volunteers have also helped
to run SCM gatherings and contrlbuted lo SCM resources and publlcallons.
Publlc b8nellt
The trustees of the Studant Christian Movement have had regard to the publlc benefit guidance, including that on
publ5¢ benefit and the advancement of rellglon, Issued by the Charlty Commlssjon. The section of this report

Achl8vement$ and porformanco
Govfjrnance
In August Ihls year we welcomed throe now trustees to th8 board. Anna H&nderson, Reuben Jenkins and Samuel
Simmonds, who weré èlected by our rnembership al the 2024 Annual Gen8ral Me8ting held in Aprll. SIX trust8as
stèpped down from their roles thi5 year. In Nov8mb8r Siobhan Doyle reslgned as a trustee. in March Joshua Mock
resigned as a trustee, and in June RebeGca Mann resigned as a trustee. At the end of July, Emilia De Luca, Russell
Frost and Joanna Rarns8y cama to tha énd of their term of offic8, and stepped down as trusto68.
Amongst the key achlevemenls of the trustees this year has been setting a budget in line with the long term
flnan¢ial plan. Following a restructure of the staff team lo reduce costs, this financial plan was drawn up by the
Iruste8S Wlth support from the Council of Reference with the aim of reducing th8 charily's rèllance on reserves to
balance the annual budget. Trustees have also had greater involvement in financial monitorlng and have begun a
review of SCM'S investrnents and reserves policy lo secure the long term financial stability of th6 movement.

A r@focus8d strat8gy and vislon was agr8ad by trustees In 2021. At ea¢h meetlng, the Irustegs r8celve a Strat8gy
Moniloring Report and a Finance and Fundraising Report so that they can regularly rewew progress, monitor our
work towards this vlslon and 8nsure they have be8n fulfilling their r6sponslbiliti6s as truslo8s. The staff deslgned a
new look to the Strategy Monltorlng Report so that It honours this refocused strategy and alms to make It easlar to
monitor our work towards this vision as w811 as enables joint truslee and staff reporting. It also makes it easy to
discuss and revlew with sections for both GC and staff members to input questions and recommendatior6 to
discuss at th8 m88ting.

The trustees continue lo meet once per lerm. and between meetings 8har8 updat8s and make urgent decisions via
8 weekly Sway newslettgr and by &mall.
Stafflng
At the start of the academlc year our Falth in Actlon project staff members Grace Stewart and Naomi Orrell
came lo the end of their one year contracts. We welcomed two new F8ith in Action project staff, Phoebe Edmonds
and Wllllam Glbson on one year ¢onlra¢t5. Th9 new staff recaived a thorough induction and have settled qulckly Into
their new rol88.
Wè recrulted Internally for the Fundralser role and employed Naoml Orrell on a new permanent ¢ontra¢t as sha
finish8d her on8 y8ar contract as a Faith in Acllon proj8Ct work8r.
Trustaes continue to support staff development through ¢ondu¢tlng annual deveh)pment revlews wllh each member
of staff In conjunction wlth their Ilne manager8 as well as probationary. Thes8 meetings are an opportunity for staff
to reflect on what has gonè well over the last year and the impact that they have seen through their work, and to
considor how èffectiV81y Ih&y hav6 faced any challenges that hava arisen. Staff ar8 also asked questions regarding
thelr wellbelng and relationships with colleagues and the truslee board. Feedback is shared with the wdor board
where appropriate and decisions tak8n regarding any p8rformanc@ relatsd pay Incr8ases due to staff.
In Ihe year there was a partlcular focus on staff w8llb&ing, and trusl88s hav& b6gun a programme of regular
w8llboing surveys in collaboration with senior staff. All staff aro encouraged to complate the surv8y anonymously to
share how well they feel that SCM 5UPPQrts and protects their wellbeing, and to offer suggestions of how this might
b& Improved.
strategy and Operations
The followlng includes an overvlew of the achlevements and perfomiance of SCM In worklng towards each of the
outcomes in our n8w vision and strategic plan.
Create, support. and su8tairF inclusive communities where sludents can fjnd a place to be and belong.
We have continued to support members and wmmunities through offerinq workshops. resources and events. as
well as maintalnlng our onllne presence on soclal medla and through streamlng keynote lalks from our In-person
gatherings. A key online community this y@ar has bean the Trans. Thoology Group, a spaco for trans. marnbars and
allies lo meet to discuss theology and faith. An exciting new creation this y@ar has been the WhatsApp community.
This has had really good engagement from members with multlple different chats, includlng SCM Membe￿, SCM
Alumni, SCM Post-Grads and SCM Writer8 Group.
The numb8r of studonts with a mambgrshlp subscrlption increased In tha last quarter, mainly through SCM'S
presence at tho Greenbelt Festival. The percentage of &year and 1-year memberships remains steady, with a good
balance between the IMO at a ratio of 750/0 10 25 % respectively, and all of the Greenbelt memberships were 3-year
ones. W8 Started tracking the percenlago of ronewals oach quartor, which this year averag8d at 400/0. This year
there was a total of 25 renewals, with nearly 400/0 of those happening in the first quarter of the year.

Membership.
Our 2024 annual members, suNey showed that 86Yo of respondents agreed that thoy falt SCM Is a place wh8re
thèy feal welcomed and a sense of bolonging. with 71 0/0 agr68ing that they felt connaclod to the wid@r movement.
Of th8 r8spond8nls. 860/0 agr86d that they fe5t that SCM is a saf8 spa¢8 for th8m lo work out th8ir be116fs and ask
que8tlons about thelr faith.
Our Faith in Action toolkl18 thls year Included prayers and game$. The advent toolkit was themed around allyshlp lo
coincide wilh the launch of the flrsl course In the Afflrmlng Chrlstlaniiy serles, 'How to be a good Chrlstlan Ally,.
Therefore, it contained a CDPY of the cours8 booklet, a progre85 praygrs postcard, a progressive flag ally badge, and
8llyshlp stlck8r sh88t, and a pronoun badge as w811 as some chocolat8. Th& sprlng toolkit conlaln8d playing Cards
themed around prayer, an SCM mural card, and 8 Sticker. Mombers who recelvg these toolkits often post pictur8s of
the contÉ3nts on social media and many feel that receiving Iheir toolkit b8nefils their mental wellbeing.

and turn il into a day event we Galled Nation81 G8thering', Theology Day. This yoar we held the ev8nt at Sl Pancras
Naw Church In London, and the theme of day was 'lnner Peaca & Outer Paclflsm.. Through tha ￿rkShopS wo
8xplored the qu8Stions of what th8 Gospels teach us about Jesus, way of nonvi018nc8, what habits and pracllces
can Support us In our spirStuality and praxis of nonviolent rosislance, and how do w8 discern what 18 ours lo do. We
Ilvestreamed a panel dlscusslon explorfng whether°Christlan Peace Means Paclfism wlth panelllsls from Embrace
lh8 Middle East, Fellowshlp of Reconclllatlon, lona Communlty, and the Christian Campalgn for Nuclear
Disarmament. Each of these panelllsts also ran a workshop on 'Peacè and Justice: Why you can't have one wlthoLrt

We had 33 attendees at the National G8thertng'. Theology Day thls year, of which 33% had never been lo an SCM
event before. Ml of the allendees said that they felt welcomed and more connected to the national movement as
rasult of attending.
Our social medla presence continues lo grow steadily. The biggest change this year is that Fac8bock group has
been archlved and we havo moved to WhatsApp. There has bg8n very good 8ngagemant with this new WhatsApp
community with 110 mernbers of the communlty and 81 In the Mèmbers group Ghat, Members have b8en uslng this
group chat to reach out to share opportunities, including promoting the Trans" Theology Group events, to ask
questions about Ihair pray6r life, or simply to shar8 mem8s (even if not as part of 'M8me Monday'l. As well as our
current chats, there were also chats croatad for those golng to Graenbelt, and for a Trans. rlghts campaign around
the puberty blockers ban. We've been focusing on TikTok as planned and gaining new followers every time we post,
as w811 as making ourselves known in the 'ChrislianTok' world by commenting and replying to vldeos. Since Xl
Twitter is an incrga$ingly unstable platform, and Mastodon dldn't get much traction, for 202425 we wlll axplore
moving to Threads and Bluesky.

Fair alongside some of our members. Through this thèy had the opportunity to meet those involved in other
organlsallons worklng for peace and both were interviewed for podcasts during the pilgrimage.
As part of tho F8ith in Action project, SCM'S own Podcast W88 renewed. Th8 first season ft)cuss8d ¢)n Bonhoeffer
with three strands.. Theology, Actlvism and D8VOtionals. The second season focused on Christlan PolllJ¢al Actlon In
Ihe runmup to the General Election. Both seasons involved input from many guests In¢ludlng members of SCM as
well as high profile theologian$.
The Faith in Aclion workers also wrote a Prolest Toolklt In response to questions from members about prolesting
safely and a Positiv8 Protest Anthology. These included specific advice for marginalised groups, practical tips, and
storles from people that have attended protests and their reflections. Both of these re80urces can be found on the
SCM websrte and an abridged version of Ihese was turned Into a Llttl8 Book of Protest that was th8n distrtbuted at

Ihe Ilfe and work of Dlotrlch Bonhooffer. Startlng the joumey in tha ruins of Coventry Cathedral, they want on lo vl$lt
key sights such as the Kalsor Wlllielm M8murfal ChurLh, the Chapel of Reconclllatlon at the Wall, Bonhoeffer House
and Niemoller House. The students heard about the hlstory of these places and about Bonhoeffer's lite and Ihe
legacy of his work still visibl8 today. Students that took part in thg trip wrote reflectlons on thelr exparlance for thé
SCM blog and Movement magazine. sharing the profound impact of the trip on thelr falth and und8rstanding of
peace and reconciliation work.
We are also ¢ontinulng to represent SCM at thg Church of England's natSonal Llvlng In Lov8 and Faith consultationg
wilh stakeholders. Two of SCM'S trustees attended meellngs al Lambeth Palace to share their views in the$8

insuranco, marketing, back office functlan8, staff travel, re¢rultm6nl and training, governance costs and
prolesslonal fees.
1.6 Nonwcurrent Investments
Flxed asset Inveslinenls are initially measured at transactlon prl¢e excluding transaction cosls, and are
subsequently measured at fair value at each r¢3porting date. Changes in fair valuo are recognlsed in nel
