SDSG is a registered charity with the Charity Commission, reference 1125170. Our registered address is 13 Garfield Road, Scarborough, YO12 7LJ. SDSG is an unincorporated association, and its constitution was adopted on 16 April 2007. ## **Charitable Object:** The charity’s objects (‘the objects’) are: “To provide or assist in the provision of facilities and events for recreation, rehabilitation, sport and leisure time occupation, (in particular but not exclusively by the provision of facilities and opportunities for swimming) for people with disabilities and their families, in the interest of social welfare with the object of improving their condition”. ## **Activities Summary and Declaration:** We have delivered a range of activities during the year in pursuit of our objective, in summary this included: - A main fortnightly swim session with a range of classes / activities ranging from general swimming, learn to swim, aquacise to Special Olympics training. - Volunteering opportunities (inc training and development) - Weekday aquatic and non-aquatic (conditioning) activities, in partnership Everyone Active. - Opportunities to attend Special Olympics Galas. - Christmas Meal and Annual Awards Presentation . - Made various equipment available to enable children, young people and adults with SEND access swimming (Such as our Aqua Sensory Lights, Disabled Changing Hoist, My Juke Headsets, Locker Saddles and Pool Pod Wheelchairs, to name a few). - Attendance at networking events and partnership meetings, in order to promote our work in the community. We have gone from strength to strength and have positivity impacted many individuals with special educational need or disability. Whilst our three core themes are: Leisure, Rehabilitation and Sport, the project has developed into three main workstreams for our Lottery funded project that our members associate with: , for our aquatic activities “ **I.SWIM** ”, non-aquatic “ **I.ACTIVE** ”, plus “ **Member & Volunteer Engagement”** for being user and volunteer led, with active engagement. Alongside, our family-based project funded through the Family Fund. We even made the local Health & Wellbeing Magazine! **Younger children with a disability and their families attending sessions through our Williams Family Fund Project** Our fortnightly early evening swim sessions continue to attract many younger families who care for a child with a disability. We now have 66 junior members registered! These inclusive family sessions utilize the audio/visual sensory equipment and qualified Swim Teachers lead games and activities which promote: Water confidence **;** Aquatic skills **;** Mental wellbeing; Team Building and Co-ordination, and from the children’s faces we know they have lots of fun! We delivered 23 main fortnightly swim sessions, which had an average of 44 people attending each one. Through our Lottery funded project, we delivered 116 direct classes, totaling 132.5hrs, which included 200 adults, 331 Page **6** of **14** Scarborough Disabled Swimming Group Annual Report 2024 children, 346 young people and 539 carers/parents/guardians. The classes varied in type, duration, time and target audience. We participated in eight events, ranging from come & try it, consultation, volunteer training event and information sessions. Plus a Special Olympics Gala. We recruited 10 new volunteers, over half have now completed the STA Aquatic Helper Course, with more due to finish in the new year. Through development funding from the Two Ridings Foundation and ICT support funded through the Lottery, we have started to develop our inhouse recording systems and improved access and storage of our equipment and resources. Our work has been extremally successful, but it hasn’t been without lots of learning and challenges along the way. We also celebrated our 50[th] year! **_______________________________________________________________** **Special Olympic Gala** - On Sunday October 6[th] 2024, Commonwealth Games silver medalist Champion Imogen Clark opened our second Special Olympics Gala here in Scarborough. We had special guests Matt Hewison NYC and Councilor David Jeffels with us. Teams from Bradford, Hull, Pontefract, York, Leeds, Nottinghamshire, Peterborough, Scarborough, Sunderland, Teesdale and Tadcaster, competed in individual and team events and our own team included Tim Everitt, Edward Spencer, Annabel Childs, Bradley Neal, Stuart Finney, Charlotte Sutton, Stuart Finney, Michael Finch, Toni Allen and Maureen Buglass who all won medals and certificates – Well done! A huge thank you to Kingfishers Swimming Club and Everyone Active for making this event possible. Page **7** of **14** Scarborough Disabled Swimming Group Annual Report 2024 **I.SWIM: Wet-side activities coordinated by Rebecca Briggs -** Many different I.SWIM activities have been organised throughout 2024 including weekday and school holiday sensory swim sessions, water safety awards and learn to swim activities. **Mencap Feedback from a staff member supporting on the day** : _MW - "All four service users have said they have really enjoyed the_ _swimming session, instructor was fully on-board with service users individual needs. The instructor noticed when services users needed extra support and provided it well._ _All services users left smiling and laughing, asking when they could go back, none-verbal services users giving 'thumbs up' sign._ _A week on, services users are still asking when they can return"_ _HM - "All love it and it really built their confidence in the water. They all keep asking when we can go back again, the instructor did a great job adapting things to meet the needs of our 'less able’ service users, it was a great day, and filled them with positivity"_ **I.ACTIVE: Dry-side Activities** coordinated by Martin Russell - Several different activities were initially trialed with students from Personalised Learning along with Neurodiverse circuit class, carers yoga plus class. Many more varied activities were developed during 2024 including: Wave Project- indoor surf/balance and beach sessions SEND soft play, Over 50’s long term health condition in conjunction with Age UK; Mencap Trial activities -to include chair yoga, aqua, relaxation – initially for parent carers, Page **8** of **14** Scarborough Disabled Swimming Group Annual Report 2024 inclusive dance and movement to music. Other developments have included Sensory soft-play and hiring the Sensory Den. Good networking has resulted in participants coming from a range of organisations such as Personalised Learning Centre, Futureworks, Mencap, Age UK, Woodlands School, Springhead, Parent Pod and Sense. Valuable learnings and feedback was gained from both students and staff, that allowed the creation of sessions that were user led (43 attended these trial sessions aged 16-25 with a range of disabilities): Neurodiverse inclusive circuit class: Inclusive Racket sports: Inclusive Dance class: Wave project indoor surf session: Sensory swim. **Matt Jones** project lead for **The Wave project** brought adapted surf/skate kit and foam indoor boards to the sports village and alternated between hall based sessions and pool based sessions. Feedback from Matt Jones, Wave project: “Both myself and staff supporting in delivering the adapted surf sessions, have seen such a Page **9** of **14** Scarborough Disabled Swimming Group Annual Report 2024 change in the students attending over the 6 weeks. Confidence has grown, motor skills have developed and all those attending have engaged really well in all the activities we’ve delivered as part of this collaboration. Following the 6 sessions at the sports village we have delivered a further 4 sessions on the South bay at Scarborough beach, the students did amazing and were able to enter the water and stand up on the surf boards riding waves! **Sensory Den -** Meeting Lexi from the Sensory Den at a networking event led to an offer of space at the sports village to host her array of sensory lighting and sensory feel equipment and an invitation to Springhead and Woodlands special needs schools to attend a schools only session on 12[th] November 2024. This complimented the broad offer across the age and disability ranges for dryside activities. One of the main goals for 2024 was to develop an ongoing timetable of sessions that can be attended and be sustainable through a lowcost charge to users. This was achieved and there have been some excellent attendances for all sessions on a weekly basis **Weekday Aquacise** – We were fortunate enough to receiving funding from See Change to deliver five sets of five aquafit classes. These have proven a great success, and we are now receiving various referrals, including social prescriptions from GPs. **50th Anniversary of SDSG -** We celebrate this great achievement of sustained support for people with a disability to have equal access to swimming, sport and active recreation. We ended 2024 with an extra special Christmas party and presentation night. Page **10** of **14** Scarborough Disabled Swimming Group Annual Report 2024 It was a great night. Everyone enjoyed the disco by EJ the DJ (Edward Spencer) and a delicious buffet by The Teapot caterers. To celebrate 50 years of SDSG members were given a commemorative mug and reusable cotton shopping bag. We celebrated members achievements by awarding certificates and our amazing Special Olympic were presented with medals. Endeavour Award: Maureen Junior Endeavour Award: Reece Volunteer Award: The Dobson Family Peter Parkinson Award: Jackie. Thanks were given to everyone who donated raffle prizes or bought raffle tickets, raising £78. The SDSG BIG SWIM 2024 thank you was awarded to Annys who raised an amazing £195. **Edward Spencer** (a swimmer with Autism, Learning Disability and arthritis), has been attending SDSG fortnightly evening sessions since he was 3 years old. Edward joined in 1982 at the ‘Pool on the Hill’ site and soon showed his skills in doggy paddle and squealing! The whole family attended and have enjoyed helping to celebrate the club’s 10[th] , 20[th] , 30[th] 40[th] and the current 50th Anniversary. Swimming has offered a life-long sport, fitness, social, and emotional support for Edward. He has gained friends both in Scarborough and across the North of England and has attained many achievements whilst competing in Special Olympics. Edward has developed many varied skills throughout his 43 years of being a SDSG member as he is now also an Aquatic Helper and Xmas Party DJ! ## **On a final note we want to say a** ## **HUGE THANKYOU** ## **to our amazing** **Volunteers, Members, Carers and team who make all this possible!** Page **11** of **14** Scarborough Disabled Swimming Group Annual Report 2024 ## **Treasurers Report** The charity has continued its growth from last year, total income reached £71,042 in 2024 from £45,622 in 2023. Similarly, expenditure has risen to £68,508 in 2024 from £23,098 in 2023. Which left the year £2,534 in 2024, compared to £22,524 in 2023. These increases are down to it being our first full year of our I.SWIM Project funded by the Lottery and the activities being phased in following staff recruitment towards the end of 2023 (leading to unspent funds at year end). The growth of the charity has led to amazing opportunities and improved outcomes for our membership, however, we realised we had underestimated the increase in core costs, such as, bookkeeping, insurance and venue hire. Trustees worked hard to obtain further external funding to help cover both development and core costs, and ensured project funding applications included full cost recovery, where possible. Trustees also approved spending to enable the development of our inhouse Microsoft recordkeeping software, as an invest to save project. The charity ended the year with unrestricted reserves of £32,368, compared to £29,207 in 2023. This was due to an increase in unfunded core costs and the trustees match funding ICT development, as part of an invest to save project. Some of our externally funded projects end in the first half of 2024 and we eagerly await the outcome of various funding applications for projects we hope to launch in 2024. Watch this space! Reserves show the financial strength of the charity. A robust reserves position is a positive message to funders and beneficiaries that we are well led, managed and run. The reserves policy should take into account the charity’s financial circumstances and other relevant factors. It should demonstrate the charity’s resilience and capacity to manage unforeseen financial difficulties. The Lottery grant has continued which will enable the charity to continue to grow for several years. The reserves of the charity stand at £133,256 of which £32,368 is unrestricted and £100,888 is restricted. This means that the reserve policy (of holding unrestricted funds between £26,000 and £34,000) has been achieved. There were trustee expenses of £68 for mileage costs in the year. Of the unrestricted reserves £4,183 relates to a revaluation of an investment and is not distributable and £3,340 are designated reserves which are earmarked for a particular use. Page **14** of **14** ## Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of Scarborough Disabled Swimming Group ## **Independent examiner's report to the trustees of Scarborough Disabled Swimming Group** I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of Scarborough Disabled Swimming Group (the Trust) for the year ended 31 December 2024. ## **Responsibilities and basis of report** As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act'). I report in respect of my examination of the Trust's accounts carried out under Section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under Section 145(5)(b) of the Act. ## **Independent examiner's statement** I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect: 1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by Section 130 of the Act; or 2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or 3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination. ACCOUNTING POLICIES** ## **Basis of preparing the financial statements** The financial statements of the charity, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Charities Act 2011. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention, with the exception of investments which are included at market value, as modified by the revaluation of certain assets. ## **Income** All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably. ## **Expenditure** Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources. ## **Tangible fixed assets** Tangible assets are not depreciated for this charity. ## **Taxation** The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities. ## **Fund accounting** Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees. Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes. Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements. ## **2.
