ACCA ANNUAL REPORT 2021
INTRODUCTION
It’s exactly a year to the day since we held our last AGM and whilst I think we’ll all accept life hasn’t returned to normal just yet, it is considerably more normal than it was then.
It was in December 2020 when we were approached by Angmering Medical Centre Team about the prospects of them using the Community Centre as a Vaccination Centre. We attended countless meetings, answered innumerable almost impossible questions from what appeared to be every department within the Medical World at often ridiculously silly times of the day & night without anyone really knowing what was exactly required. As it turns out the Centre ticked every single box that was necessary and, following Trustee approval, we began the vaccination clinics in January 2021.
Some would say the rest is history but I would like to take a moment to mention a few people on our side of the story who helped ensure it got of the ground. My husband, Tony Cross who, voluntarily, although he may say otherwise, agreed to take on the role of caretaker as Shaun our permanent caretaker, had broken his hip after a bad fall. Opening up, gritting paths, ensuring all was set for the teams to begin every day when most of us were still tucked up in bed. Without him life for the medical team would have been considerably more complex & I know they were exceptionally grateful for his support.
In addition, Lucy, our Centre Manager, has constantly juggled her busy family life, often well beyond the call of her role. She has ensured countless minor ‘emergencies’ were dealt with eficiently, with good humour and a smile, no matter what was thrown at her. Believe me there were times when we could both have happily screamed in frustration. I know the Medical Team couldn’t have achieved so much without Lucy’s constant support and ‘can do’ attitude. She has been amazing and I for one am exceptionally grateful that she has been there for us.
Louisa & Karen, our Reception Staf have also stepped in and then stepped back at times with only a few hours’ notice as the Medical Team’s ‘needs’ changed. Louisa’s husband Adrian also agreed to support the role of Caretaker as the hours the centre opened increased to many more than 1 person could maintain. Again, I wish to thank Adrian for all his eforts and we are hopeful he may continue to support us in the same way.
Shaun, our long-term Caretaker finally returned to work after extensive surgery and physiotherapy which allowed Tony to step down. Shaun’s mobility has increased incredibly well through his own determination and
we’re hopeful in the coming months he will be able to return to his full duties.
MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE
Having served on a number of committees over the years I can honestly say I feel extremely fortunate with ‘my team’. We often have difering thoughts on the way forward but the discussions are always carried out calmly and professionally, resulting in a balanced view. No matter what their own personal thoughts are, the Trustees always place the aims of the ACCA firmly in first place.
After advertising on Face Book for additional members of the community to join the Trustees, I think we struck lucky when Andy & Amanda put themselves forward for the role. Both have regularly volunteered their time with the Covid Clinic long before they responded to my call for new blood. They both have the community at heart with very useful skills gained from their employment backgrounds.
WEB SITE & LOGO
A new web site had been agreed by the Trustees a few years ago but due to technical complexities, progress was paused. However, it is with considerable relief that finally we have a new site that is more attractive and easier for the staf to use. Along with the new site we also have a new logo which was developed for us free of charge.
GRANTS
Action for Rural Sussex awarded us a grant of £2,470 to be used towards a project for the benefit of the community. We have looked into ways of utilising the Pram Shelter for a ‘Men in Sheds’ type project but at the present time and until the Clinic is finished, the matter requires further thought. There is no electricity and security is an issue, but we welcome any other ideas what the grant or indeed the Shelter can be used for.
Further Grants to the tune of £39,000 were received by the ACCA from Government funds during the pandemic. The grants appear to be generic across many sectors and were received during the initial lockdown.
ANGMERING PARISH COUNCIL
The Chair of Angmering Parish Council, Nikki Hamilton-Street, has approached us to discuss the possibility of extending the Centre to include ofices for their staf. The idea is still very much in its infancy stages but in principle the Trustees see it as a positive venture for everyone.
CLEANING COMPANY
Our cleaning company of long standing has now been replaced by another local company. To date we are very happy with the change especially as financially it is proving far more cost efective.
HIRERS CHARGES
Whilst the hiring charges haven’t been raised for a number of years, we have taken the decision, in support of our community, to keep our rates as they are. Charges will be revisited as and when the centre returns to full capacity after the Clinic has finished.
ANGMERING PRODUCE / FLOWER SHOW
Pigeon House, which is the long-standing venue for this annual event, is no longer available and the event’s Committee is looking for a new venue and volunteers. We have ofered the Centre until such times as they could find something more suitable. The date for the next Show is July 23[rd] 2022. APC are going to assist with the running of the show whilst a new Committee is formed. ACCA Staf and Trustees will be supporting the event wherever possible.
LITTLEHAMPTON COMMUNITY FRIDGE
The organisers of the Fridge approached us as a venue to host this weekly stall, predominantly in the Centre Car Park. It is proving very successful although a knock-on complication has been the queues of people that sometimes-blocked access to the Vaccination Clinics. However, this has now been resolved.
VACCINATION CLINIC
This will now continue to operate until the end of the year to enable the Covid Booster and the Flu Jabs to be administered. We had hoped that the clinics would cease at the end of September, as it had already been extended from May to September at the Medical Teams request, to ensure as many vaccinations as possible for the community could take place. As you will appreciate, many additional age groups were added to the list of people requiring vaccinations as more information on the pandemic impact became known. Innovations in Primary Care specifically requested a continuation of the Boosters as they were for a specific group of the community who they felt would probably be reluctant to travel to mass vaccination sites.
HIRERS
Whilst we agreed to the continuation of the clinics, we were very keen to be able to invite our hirers back to the centre. It has taken a considerable amount of work and juggling by our staf to allow this to happen. It will be constantly monitored and adjusted to ensure we
support our community with a return to the normality of classes whilst our continuing work with the medical teams.
VOLUNTEERS
I would like to finish by thanking the huge number of volunteers that have given their time since January to assist the Medical Teams with the vaccinations. We have an amazingly supportive community who have helped make all the clinics achievable. Without them working in the car park in all weathers, inside cleaning chairs or helping wherever required, be assured the clinics could not have taken place. We are exceptionally thankful for every minute of their precious commitment to ‘the call to arms’.
