Report from the Trustees Year ending August 31[st ] 2022
Art Beyond Belief works to challenge preconceptions, especially with regard to faith, health, diversity and social disadvantage, through innovative and inspirational art-based projects. We aim to improving wellbeing and communication through engagement with visual arts.
During the past year ABB has made good progress towards these aims.
The Connect Mental Health and Wellbeing programs which we created as Zoom-based sessions specifically during Covid have proven useful beyond their original lockdown-era intention - for groups that cannot travel or are geographically separated, and also as an introductory group-bonding programme prior to Looking Glass and other face-to-face groups. ReConnect – our ongoing support group, is now an established strand of our work, and meets face-to-face.
Covid-impact specific funding has helped us to weather the difficult years since 2020, and we now look towards new funding streams to continue working with current clients, expand our work further to new clients and groups, and make further connections and co-partnerships to grow the organization for the coming years.
ABB reported last year that one of the biggest challenges reported by our clients and by professionals in the sector was the reduction of mental health services available, while the need for support was greater than ever. We continue to monitor what is happening in the sector, so that the programmmes we offer serve our clients well, and are continue to be relevant to local needs and services.
Face-to-face meet has started to return, although there is still reluctance in some quarters. We will continue to be flexible in our approach, - whether we find ourselves face-to-face with our clients, or meeting over Zoom.
The Art Beyond Belief Management Team is confident that the organisation is well placed to deliver outcomes to our clients in the coming year, and that we will be in a position to develop and deliver further innovative programmes to enhance the charity’s aims.

Achievements and performance
During this year, we have continued to embrace the challenges of post-Covid, postlockdown ways of working. Continuing with Zoom-based deliveries of the Connect programme, we have also resumed face-to-face meeting as appropriate. We have identified opportunities for which hybrid ways of working are ideal for our clients and for our organization, and continue to develop programmes with flexibility in mind.
As reported two years ago, we set up the Connect programme specifically to tackle the restrictions of lockdown - a low-tech, easily accessed Zoom-based alternative to using simplified versions of Looking Glass tools and exercises, along with bespoke new ones. Although we had initially seen Connect as a short-term response for Covid times, it has become an established programme in its own right. It has benefits for groups that are geographically spread, and for those who find travel difficult for whatever reason. Material from the original lockdown Connect programmes 1 thru 4 has evolved, and been customized to suit a number of groups. Meanwhile, we are once again starting to build up the Looking Glass face to face programmes.
During this year, we completed our work with Slough CVS on the Thriving Communities programme through Social Prescribing, including the feedback and reporting process. We continued to deliver Connect through MHICS, and through Buckinghamshire Recovery College. Through contacts from this process, we were asked to develop a programme for a dementia group in Bucks; we developed are running an iPad-based programme which is proving very successful so far.
We have been asked by the organization Learning Through The Arts, who specialize in creative wellbeing, to collaborate one of their programmes in Slough. Their aims and accent on arts and creativity makes us good partners for each other, and we are looking forward to running the Aspire programme with them.
We ran some sessions this year for Refugee week with Slough Refugee Support. We have run diversity sessions once again at JCoss school, and are currently planning a Rucksack programme for autumn half-term. The recipe book project with Food for Thought has come to a successful conclusion.
Diversity and Inclusion
An estimated 200 people have taken part in our projects during the year, approximately 50% male/female. The demographic of our participants is in line with the local demographic. Our programmes are open to all, and we are proactive in our use of tools, apps, access assistance and volunteer support to enable each person to take part fully.
Finance and Funding
Thank you to our funders : Rothschild Foundation Berkshire Community Foundation Community Fund (National Lottery) Heart of Bucks The Coop Thriving Communities/Art Council England Slough Council for Voluntary Service
Thank you also to:
Slough Council for Voluntary Service Apple Business Team at The Oracle
Volunteer time and in-kind contributions
Our projects, and consequently our personnel, are currently funded on a project-by-project basis. A great deal of volunteer time has been given by those most closely involved in our organisation. We estimate that more than 1200 volunteer hours have been given on peer support, funding, administration, planning and marketing, to a value of approximately £14,500
Special thanks are due to our volunteers Sam, Karen, Paul and Emma, invaluable members of the Art Beyond Belief team who continue to support ABB and our clients. Thank you!
Plans for the future
Now that we can contemplate return to some normality, we are particularly keen to start face-to-face groups once more, particularly with the Looking Glass programme. However, we will not lose sight of the enormous potential for the Connect Zoom-based programmes to continue, and we envisage the two delivery mechanisms working in parallel. In the upcoming year, we intend to:
-
Restart the Looking Glass face-to-face programmes, taking the opportunity of a refresh of the content and taking onboard what we and our clients learned during the Covid period
-
Continue deliveries of the Connect suite of four programmes, particularly where Zoom-based delivery works better than face-to-face.
-
Continue working with ReConnect group, meeting face-to-face whenever possible, particularly on their Green project exploring our relationship with, and responsibility for, the environment.
-
Continue to develop our connections with community groups and partnerships
-
Build our knowledge on new ways of working and new opportunities, in particular looking at expanding the geographical areas in which we work with social prescribing, MHICS and others, and increasing our professional contacts
-
• Continue to look for an increase in core funding.
-
Continuing to market our organisation via our website, social media and networking, and exploring new opportunities to expand our horizons
