Report from the Trustees Year ending August 31[st] 2021
Art Beyond Belief works to challenge preconceptions, especially with regard to faith, health, diversity and social disadvantage, through innovative and inspirational art-based projects.
During the past year ABB has made good progress towards these aims in spite of ongoing uncertainty and disruption caused by Covid-19, lockdown and other restrictions.
Last year, we reported two main strands of our initial response to Covid and lockdown, which impacted the second half of that reporting year. These were:
-
customising running programmes in order to sustain support remotely
-
creating new programmes specifically for lockdown (Connect & ReConnect)
We continued to build on this approach during the year to August 2021. This enabled us to access funding - including Covid-impact specific funding - to continue working with current clients, to expand our work further to new clients and groups, and to make further connections and co-partnerships that will stand us in good stead in ‘new normal’ times.
It became apparent in first lockdown that many mental health services had suspended their support for clients, and while available services decreased, the need for support was ever-increasing. We were able to build on the Connect programme to offer three follow-on programmes, and we ran these throughout lockdown.
As programmes relying on physical meeting, Looking Glass and Curator were put on hold, with Connect, as a Zoom-based option, taking the place of Looking Glass, ReConnect - a weekly Zoom based support group - taking the place of Curator and providing support after the Connect programmes.
We envisage that face-to-face meeting may return during the second half of our upcoming year; we are ready with flexible and scalable options so that we can be quick to react to the situation as it changes and meet the needs of our clients both current and new - whether we find ourselves face-to-face, or remote or hybrid working on Zoom.
The Art Beyond Belief Management Team is confident that the organisation is well placed to deliver outcomes to our clients in the coming year - whatever the situation - and that we will be in a position to develop and deliver further innovative programmes to enhance the charity’s aims.

Achievements and performance
During this year, we have risen to the challenges of a completely different way of working. We have also been able to identify opportunities that is new way of working offers - for our clients and for our organisation.
Support for existing Mental Health programme clients
At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, we had:
-
loaned each of our existing clients an iPad, set up ready to continue their work.
-
replaced physical meetings with Zoom sessions
-
created WhatsApp groups for communication.
Our volunteers helped with support with connection, and we encouraged clients to use the challenges of the situation as an inspiration whenever possible. Isolation, confusion, and fear of an uncertain future, which many clients experiences at the start of lockdown, continued to be a major issue for so many throughout the year, and the support we provided was appreciated and relied upon.
Responding to the challenges of well-being during Covid - a different way of working
As we reported last year, we set up the Connect programme during lockdown as a low-tech alternative to Looking Glass Basic. Connect uses pared-down, simplified versions of Looking Glass tools and exercises, along with some new ones we have developed specially for this programme, with lots of discussion and sharing of experiences.
Slough Council for Voluntary Service asked us be a partner in the Thriving Communities programme (which runs to March 2022) - this delivers Connect programmes through Social Prescribing. We also deliver to clients of MHICS, and in Buckinghamshire through the Recovery College. During Connect, we help participants to understand ways that lockdown and uncertainty affects us, identify what causes our worry, anxiety and fear, learn about constructive ways of coping, and develop ways to keep a positive outlook
The Connect One programmes run with new groups of clients; after this, approximately 50% choose to continue with Connects 2, 3 and 4 - so we have combined groups at this point to ensure optimum numbers for discussion and support. After Level 4, clients can choose to join the ReConnect group, which meets weekly on Zoom. This group has worked on mini projects such as ‘postcards from the edge’ and ‘my shadow self’- we, and they, have benefitted from support from the Coop which is ongoing. The ReConnect group has been together for longer than any other group we have run.
Food for Thought
We have been working with a group of ladies from the ‘Walk and Talk Upton’ group, who have been growing vegetables, fruit and herbs in their gardens during lockdown. They asked us to help them work on e-Books of traditional and family recipes from diverse cultures, and we have done this with two of our volunteers taking major roles. We received funding from the Grocers Charity for this programme. The books are scheduled to complete at the end of 2021.
Diversity and Inclusion
An estimated 180 people have taken part in our projects during the year, approximately 50% male/female. The demographic of our participants is in line with the local demographic. Our programmes are open to all, and we are proactive in our use of tools, apps, access assistance and volunteer support to enable each person to take part fully.
Finance and Funding
Thank you to our funders : Rothschild Foundation Berkshire Community Foundation Community Fund (National Lottery) Heart of Bucks The Grocers Charity BP Collins Louis Baylis The Coop Freedom for Minds Thriving Communities/Art Council England Slough Council for Voluntary Service
Thank you also to:
Slough Council for Voluntary Service Apple Business Team at The Oracle Kingsway United Reformed Church
Volunteer time and in-kind contributions
Our projects, and consequently our personnel, are currently funded on a project-by-project basis. A great deal of volunteer time has been given by those most closely involved in our organisation. We estimate that more than 1200 volunteer hours have been given on peer support, funding, administration, planning and marketing, to a value of approximately £14,500
Special thanks are due to our volunteers Sam, Karen, Paul and Emma, who have worked tirelessly to help Connect clients with Zoom connections and offered so much encouragement and support throughout this strange and difficult year for everyone. Their support is simply invaluable.
Plans for the future
Last year, we said ‘The coming year to August 2021 will undoubtedly be different …’ We envisaged restrictions being with us for some of the year, but not to its end, and even then with little prospect of a continuous return to previous normality. We also said last year that we “…will continue to be open to opportunities to fulfil our mission, and be ready to react to changing circumstances” - and this is still our standpoint. In the short term, we intend to :
-
Continue deliveries of the Connect suite of four programme with clients whose well-being is suffering as a result of lockdown, fear and isolation.
-
Continue working with ReConnect group - over Zoom for now - incorporating clients who have finished Connect at Level Four if they wish to join.
-
Continue to develop our connections with community groups and partnerships
-
Build our knowledge on new ways of working and new opportunities, in particular looking at expanding the geographical areas in which we work with social prescribing, MHICS and others, and increasing our professional contacts
-
Be prepared for the return of face-to-face working, including assessing risk and preparing financially.
-
Continue to look for an increase in core funding.
-
Continuing to market our organisation via our website, social media and networking
