Achievements and pertormance
The Antony Dale Trust was estsblished to secure the wish ot Antony and Yvonne Dale that their
'Secret Garden, could be secured in perpetuityfor general public benefit.
Theii wills determiningthatthis be undertaken through bequestto the then Brighton Councilwas
thwarted. as the Council made clear that they could nottake on such re5ponsibilitywithin its overall
remit of Parks and Gafdens. After much negotiation, which included possible transfer to the Regency
Society, of which Antony Dale had been a prime mover, it became clear that the best option was to
form an independent charitable trust dedicated to their wish. At the outsetthe aims set oul stated 'the
object ol the charity is to promote for the benefit of the publlc the conservation of English Gardens ', to

advance the educatlon of the public in particular but not exclusively by promoting research into and
Study ofth8 English Garden .
- to and for such other charitable purposes as the Trustees mayfrom
tlme to time determine,.
The founding group oftrustees was chaired by PTofessor Gavin Henderson, a former Director of
Brighton Festival, with Stephen Neiman, founding Director of the Old Market. They remain as Trustees
togetherwith Jackie Fltzgerald. Caroline Cowley and Talia RodEers. Dorothea, Lady Campbell la very
old fiiend of the Dales) had seNed from the outset but stood down in the course ol the year after
considerable input in establishingthe TrusL Christopher Baron joined as Trustee duringthe year.
Volunteer Clair Maytook on the role of minute secretary in 2019, we are truly indebted to her for her
dedicated service.
Early on, itwas deemed th* the Gar(ien woul¢ make a fine base for the exhibition of sculpture. and
thatthis should underscore the public benefit delivered bythe Trust.
After a period of closure and restricted access because of Covid and Lockijown. the Gar(len
was fully open again for the year undef review. including a major group exhibition of sculpture to
coincide with the Brighton Festival and as part of the Open Houses programme of visual arts. This was
curated by Lianne Jarrett and Rachel Cunningham with the support of Anne Elliot. This was to be the
last timethat Lianne and Rachel worked forthe Trust. Once again, the Behrens Foundation contribute
significanl fundingtowards this exhibition and so too Ihere was grant aid from the Chalk Cliff Trust.
The artists featured were Kenneth Armitage, WendyTaylor, Julian Wilds and Will Nash.
In the previous year, and Into this year, the Garden gave room forthe, Great Elm, to be relocated
from Preston Park, where it ha(J died from the virulent elm disease. Here it was possible for the artist
Elpida Hadzi-vassileevto work on the tree In creating a substantial artwork. In due course it was
rèlocated to Preston Pa¥k, where it can now be viewed. completeii, bythe public.
This year sawthe full introduction of weodlngs as a crucial income generatortorthe Trust, instigated
and managed by Stephen Neiman. The garden is now registered with Biighton and Hove Council as an
official wedding facility and much appreciated bythe reglstrars. The weddlngs commence after the
Brighlon Festival period, and the fullweekend period of the Exhibition runningthrough to the end of
September, when the Garden closes for the season. During this period the Garden is open to the public
on Sundays and bank holidays, with refreshments land Indeed, the legendary cakesll set up and
provided by Siobhan Fitzgerald's Table. She also provides cateringforthe weddings.
The public opening is stewarded by a team ofvolunteers, coordinated and managed byjackie
Fitzgerald. Their dedication and commitment is much appreciated.
The Garden Itself is cared for by Nick Wer, the only paid member of staff . He ha5 overseen the total
replanting of the Garden, bringing it back to somethlng like its Regency provenance. It is gradually
maturing with some newly planted trees, i.e. mulberry, thatwilltske manyyears to reach full growth. In
due course, It would be advantaEeous to open the Garden at other tlmes in the year
We remain indebted to the Behrens Fundation who have made a 5ubstansial donation £50.000 to enable
The Trust to disharge the Bounce Back Loan and to underwite an exhblbltlon in 2024 and 2025.
