RPR Trustees Annual Report (Year Ending 2023)
Having agreed to extend RPR’s operation in a limited capacity to help other animal charities and welfare cases when required after the COVID-19 Pandemic, RPR continued to have a regular number of cats being placed into rescue. This included pregnant pedigree cats which were coming from ‘back street’ breeders due to limited opportunities for them to make money from selling kittens after the COVID-19 lockdown. These cats had often been overbred and also included small female cats that has been mated with larger cats such as Maine Coons. In these cases, the cats required C-sections as they were unable to pass their kittens naturally. Over this period RPR also had a number of cats dumped on our doorstep, something which hadn’t happened for many years. This was likely due to desperate people unable to cover the costs for caring for their pets and with other rescues at full capacity, dumping them was the only option. Coupled with this situation, adoptions were slow probably as a result in the increased cost of living. This meant that RPR had to keep cats for longer than usual.
RPR has also been busy with maintaining its cat pens and a new roof is needed for the catteries. However, this has been placed on hold until the influx of cats slows down. Fundraising through auctions has still proved to be successful way to raise money, particularly during this difficult period in re-homing cats.
Towards the end of 2023 the RPR manager/founder (Mrs Patsy Smith) suffered a heart attack and the treasurer (Mrs Ann Dyte) was diagnosed with cancer. As a result, the rescue was closed for any new intakes for the foreseeable future but continued to rehome those cats and kittens that were already in rescue.
In noting the impact of the issues outlined above, the RPR Manager continued to work tirelessly in a voluntary capacity over this period, having previously announced her retirement in 2019.
