CRAWLEY AMATEUR BOXING CLUB ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 20TH FEBRUARY 2022 @ 10AM AT THE GYM
Members Present: Rees HOPCRAFT (Chair), Paddy HARMEY (Vice Chair / Junior Head Coach), Keith GABRIEL (Snr Head Coach), Peter Hopcraft Snr, Peter Hopcraft, Lynette BROWN, Matarr WANDA.
Previous Minutes of AGM : Read and agreed
Chairman’s Report : Chairman reported that since the previous AGM the club has had a challenging time. The unexpected loss of his father, matchmaker James VERBEETON leaving with the seniors, and the resignation of Ron PARSONS had left gaps to fill.
COVID had hit the club and the sport hard in general, although Jenny HOPCRAFT had managed to secure £18,000 in grants to cover any shortfalls.
All private training had been abolished and the Chairman stated that he felt that this was a great opportunity to see the club being used for its sole purpose – to teach amateur boxing to young people. The current senior squad have started from scratch and are loyal to the club and its ethics. Keith would now have more control in molding the seniors as he wanted.
The Kid Gloves and novices on a Saturday was working well and more are hoping to come through. New coaches Matarr WANDA and Sulman MIRZA have taken their level 1 course – Harvey WATERWORTH, Mohammad RAJA and Andrew WATSON will be taking theirs in the near future. Lynette has taken over the club admin roles and will be a great asset.
A club shop has now been set up with Box Fit and tracksuits were purchased for each coach and boxer who stayed loyal through COVID.
The Chairman ended by thanking Ron for organizing the Goffs Park show which was a great success, and for bringing in previously unused sponsors which will hopefully continue to support the club. The Chairman went on to thank everyone who helped at the show which made a profit of nearly £2,000.
The Chairman reminded everyone that he was still trying to keep subs to a minimum to give young people from all backgrounds the opportunity to box and to speak with him about any members who are in financial difficulties.
Secretary’s Report: To say it’s been a challenging last two years is something of an understatement, but in true spirit we at Crawley Boxing Club have come back fighting.
Not only have we had to endure the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic, we’ve also had to say goodbye to two club legends. Firstly our former boxer, coach, official and club chairman of 37 years Geoff Hopcraft passed away suddenly, a passing that left the whole club in shock, grief and disbelief.
And just three months later our greatest ever boxer, the former undisputed middleweight champion of the world Alan Minter lost his last ever fight, this time to that awful disease cancer.
Add to that when we did return to the gym following the long and unprecedented lockdown, we did so in the knowledge that we has lost our entire senior squad of boxers. However under the efforts and experience of Head Coach Keith Gabriel the seniors rebuilt, albeit with a squad of novices, and they continue to flourish.
Like every other amateur boxing club within the England Boxing organisation we suffered somewhat financially. Luckily however that club is lucky to have Jenny Hopcraft, wife of chairman Rees, within it’s ranks. Her astute financial brain and drive have enabled us to come out the other side in good shape and good for many years t come.
In November last year we were finally able stage a home show, a show that was dedicated to the memory of the legendary Geoff Hopcraft. An awful lot of hard work resulted in a terrific show in front of a packed house at the Goffs Park Social Club. I’ve no doubt your chairman will elaborate further on the subject shortly.
And finally it’s time to say a very sad farewell from me. Last month I made the all too hasty and ill conceived decision to retire as your secretary, a decision on hindsight one I deeply regret. I leave you however with a certain degree of pride of all I’ve done for Crawley Boxing Club, and I wish you every success for the future.
Yours In Sport
Ron Parsons
