Trustees' report (continued) for the year ended 31 March 2023

Public benefit statement

In setting our objectives and planning our activities our trustees have given serious consideration to the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit and in particular advancement of education and training.

Achievements and performance

This year has seen a slow recovery after the Covid pandemic. We resumed carriage driving and riding therapy, and also introduced some new activities: Tea With A Pony for disabled and/or elderly participants to come with carers for a pony therapy session and tea and cake; secondly our horse simulator became very popular with disabled children and young adults. The simulator enables them to learn riding skills and balance, without the fear of falling off a horse.

Our total number of participants has more than doubled since last year, and there was a 37% increase in the total number of sessions over the year (April 2022 – March 2023). We started two new Riding Therapy groups on a Thursday evening and Saturday morning, which have proved to be very successful and enjoyed by an increasing number of children. Carriage driving and Pony Therapy has continued to flourish three times a week.

In Spring 2022, the Group held Open Days to introduce ourselves to new participants and welcome new volunteers. There was a 34% increase in the total number of volunteers at the year end, compared to the end of March 2022. Volunteers are given full training and we also welcome young volunteers from the age of 12, who can do their Duke of Edinburgh Award volunteering with us, and they can work towards the Young Equestrian Leaders programme.

We also work with special needs, higher and further education colleges to offer their pupils work experience and the opportunity to do the ASDAN training.

We have further developed our connections with local companies, who fundraise for us, make donations, come and have a Corporate Volunteer Day with us, or who take part in wellbeing activities like Pony Walk and Talk.

Financial review

The net receipts for the year were £10,669, including net receipts of £2,557 on unrestricted funds and net receipts of £8,112 on restricted funds after transfers.

Dial Wood was affected by the Covid pandemic, as we had to stop all our activities. Since April 2022, we have been rebuilding our number of participants and volunteers, and the trustees are confident that the group will continue to run all its activities in the future.

Reserves policy

The charity's free reserves, at the year end were £17,814.

Dial Wood Carriage Driving aim to maintain a maximum amount of £15,000 in reserve, to enable the smooth running of the Charity, and enable an orderly winding up of the organisation, if the need ever arose.

This amount will be set aside in the Charity’s Instant Access Savings account, and represents £10,000 as a maximum amount for running the organisation for up to nine months, and up to £5,000 for unexpected large emergency veterinary bills in the future.

The minimum amount in reserve would be £11,000, comprising £6,000 for six months running costs and £5,000 for large emergency vet bills.

Approved by the board of trustees on 08/11/2023
