## Trustees' report (continued) for the year ended 31 March 2022

## **Objectives and activities (continued)**

## **Public benefit statement**

In setting our objectives and planning our activities our trustees have given serious consideration to the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit and in particular advancement of education and training.

## **Achievements and performance**

We have provided a carriage driving experience for a number of disabled people in Wakefield and Huddersfield areas. Due to the Covid pandemic, we expanded the activities that we run to include pony therapy, when the disabled participants were able to come and spend time with our ponies to groom them, and if they were able, they exercised them. We offer riding therapy for disabled children, with three of our ponies. In December 2021 we purchased a horse simulator, which has enabled us to offer riding therapy all year round and has been used to introduce participants to the skill of riding, without the fear of being up on a live horse.

We offer full training to our volunteers and welcome young volunteers from the age of 12 to do their DofE (Duke of Edinburgh Award) volunteering and work towards the Young Equestrian Leaders programme.

We also work with special needs, higher and further education colleges to offer work experience for their pupils.

## **Financial review**

The net receipts for the year were £1,682, including net payments of £4,245 on unrestricted funds and net receipts of £5,927 on restricted funds.

During the Covid 19 pandemic, our activities were all stopped, as all our participants were under the vulnerable/ at risk category. As restrictions were lifted, we welcomed some back to the group and offered them pony therapy, as we were still unable to carriage drive. We were unable to do any fundraising at local shows, but we continued to receive donations and were able to run our annual raffle. Our Group Organiser continued to apply for grants – many of which were successful, especially for running costs and to purchase the horse simulator.

We rely on grants for about two-thirds of our major expenditure; the rest of our income comes from our fundraising efforts and participant donations. We have a restricted reserve fund in case of emergencies for large vet bills.

The trustees have reassessed the charity’s ability to continue for at least 12 months from the date that the accounts are approved and conclude that no material uncertainties exist that cast significant doubt on the charity's ability to meet its liabilities as they fall due.’

## **Reserves policy**

The charity's free reserves, excluding fixed assets, at the year end were £15,257.

Currently we do not have a written reserves policy, but we aim to maintain an amount of £8,000 to cover six months general running costs and any large emergency vet bills.

Approved by the board of trustees on 15/11/2022
