THE ARROW RAINFOREST FOUNDATION & BOW CHARITY TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT 2024

The areas of the Brasilian Amazon in which ARF work are areas of extremely, high, biodiversity, which is sadly under constant threat from illegal logging, mining and land grabbing. Detecting, monitoring and verifying these threats remotely and on the ground is a core part of our work. To achieve this, we need to forge and maintain strong links with local river and indigenous communities and develop strong links with remote sensing providers and protection agencies.

  1. The ARF Field Officer made 4, international visits, totalling 6 months during this period, to 3 project areas within the Brasilian Amazon and one in the Mid Atlantic Forest:

a). The Apui Mosaic – I) Conducted a further 4 week expedition to the upper Rio Sucunduri and the State Park of Sucunduri. The purpose was to collect monitoring equipment left in 2023 and monitor threats to the area II) Conducted a 2 week expedition to the River Urucu alto Sucunduri to monitor threats to the Juruena National Park (Amazonas)

b) Lower Rio Sucunduri – made two river trips to visit the riverine communities and 2 carbon offsets areas to forge stronger links with both.

c) Val das Videiras, Petroplysis -ARF funded and participated in further follow up, in depth botanic surveys of some of the original 7 fragmented forest studied in 2023.

d) Rio Abacaxis – made one 3 week expedition with the Maragua tribe to the middle and upper Abacaxis to learn more about they’re territory, the logistics of monitoring and the threats facing them.

e) Biological Reserve Arara (Rebio Araras) – In collaboration with the Federal Rural University of Rio Janeiro UFRRJ and the State Environmental Institute (INEA) Management team of the Rebeio Araras, ARF funded and participated in 2 botanical surveys of 3 isolated, high altitude forests.

  1. Held community meeting with the river people of the lower Sucunduri, and the indigenous Maragua people of the Rio Abacaxis.

  2. Conducted meeting with local and national conservation agencies, working within the 3 project areas

ACHIEVEMENTS & PERFORMANCE

ARF achieved a close working relationship with Ksat, the provider of Planet satellite imagery for the NICFI forest monitoring program. We used this high-resolution imagery very effectively to help the Rio Sucunduri and Rio Abacaxis /Maragua communities and Carbon offset areas to monitor and protect there forests.

ARF created a good working relationship with the Maragua tribe who live and try to protect one of the top biodiverse areas in the Brasilian Amazon.

By collaborating with INEA and UFFRJ we were able to gain access to the highly restricted biological reserve of Araras and collect samples of trees and plants poorly collected in the past but vital for future forest regeneration. Our botanical surveys continue to add important data of the distribution of rare trees.

Brazilian Partners

ARF works in Protected Forest Areas in close liaison with the management teams of each area. ARF only works with NGOS and Academic institutions which have safe working procedures and longterm experience of each area.

GOVERNMENT.

The Trustees act as the Membership Committee and have control of the charity, its assets and funds

RESERVES POLICY.

ARF’s policy is to apply all charity funds within a reasonable time of receiving them making sure enough is left in reserve to cover all financial liabilities and commitments.

Reserves are necessary to ensure the basic expenses of the charity are met when there are fluctuations in donation receipts, unforeseen costs and to meet future planned project costs. The trustees have set the current appropriate level of reserve for the charity at £1,500 to meet the minimum day to day running costs and a small contingency for any unforeseen costs.

The trustees are working to build up our reserves which will enable us to support our cash flow and enable continuity within the charity. ARF trustees regularly monitor and assess the reserves level against expenditure at each trustee meeting when a significant new expenditure is decided and amends appropriately.
