Para 1.20 IN THE UK
Following a decision taken in October 2020 to
increase from 2 to 4 meetings a year, in 2021
the Trustees met in person in April and
October, and held two shorter online
meetings in January and June. We have
continued to keep a close eye on the
management and financing of the project
work in Uganda. During this year we
continued to obtain direct online input and
participation from our Ugandan Field Director
and his assistant.
Our application for funding to UKAid Direct,
which had initially been successful, was
unfortunately swept aside by Government
policy changes.
The global pandemic continued intermittently
to hinder fund-raising activities and teaching
and training activities in Uganda. Our mini-
furlough scheme for the field staff involved in
that work, together with some funding to
relieve our Team from hardship and to
provide Covid safety materials, continued into
2021. And once again there were sadly no
tours or Trustee visits to the field.
Instead of our usual biennial centralised
sponsored walk, 15 different local walks were
held across England in June, involving a
record number of participants and raising a
record £28,000. Participants ranged from
families of two or three people completing
their own walks, to larger groups of up to 30
walking together and supported with
refreshments along the way.
Total income for the year, despite the
pandemic was £131,777, £2,500 of which
was from a charitable foundation and we also
received a substantial legacy donation. This
total compares to £66,689 last year. A total of
£109,271 was despatched to the field,
including £27,500 for a new project vehicle.
Programme management costs in support of
the activities described below, were met in
the sum of £30,100. These included

management staff salaries, office and vehicle maintenance costs, including the cost of the annual audit. There were direct contributions sent to the field for the Bwanga Hill project (£33,800), and to construct Ndere mini gravity flow scheme (£6,400) plus £9,000 for general sustainability work, including construction and repair of springs. £2,500 was spent on Covid 19 material, hardship relief and furlough payments. Less than £500 was spent on administration and publicity in the UK. IN UGANDA Covid 19 restrictions continued in Uganda, including curfews and school closures, throughout the year. Permission continued for site construction work to continue, but not for education and training work. An independent audit of the programme and accounts for the year ended 30 September, 2020, was funded, and completed in May this year. Incountry fundraising has understandably been thwarted this year due to Covid 19 restrictions. Construction work continued apace throughout the year., Ndere mini gravity flow scheme, commenced in January and included new water supply storage, pipelines and tapstands, and toilet blocks. The main phase of the Bwanga Hill water and sanitation project, primarily serving a secondary school and the local community, began in July. 3 new springs were constructed at Kiteme, Kyabugashe, and Kyandago, and two others repaired at Rukarara and Kinyasano. A total of over 2,400 people stand to benefit from the schemes mentioned above, although Bwanga Hill will only be finally completed in early 2022. Within our sustainability programme, apart from the springs mentioned above, many visits were undertaken to existing projects during which repairs were carried out, in one case a water pipeline reinstated following a storm-induced landslide. Local management problems were identified and assistance was given towards their resolution.
