|Summary of the main<br>achievements of the charity,<br>identifying the difference the<br>charity’s work has made to<br>the circumstances of its<br>beneficiaries and any wider<br>benefits to society as a<br>whole.|Para 1.20|**IN THE UK**<br>The UK Trustees, who met in plenary as usual<br>twice during the year, have continued to keep<br>a close eye on the management and financing<br>of the project work in Uganda. At each meeting<br>we review detailed quarterly reports on the<br>activities of the Team in Uganda, and during<br>this year utilising ZOOM has enabled us to<br>obtain direct input and participation from our<br>Ugandan Field Director and his assistant. Our<br>main supporting charity TearFund, who<br>returned in 2019 after a brief hiatus, continued<br>their valuable support to the programme this<br>year. We made a number of successful<br>applications to grant making bodies. An<br>application to UKAid Direct was initially<br>successful, but was set on one side while we<br>put in place a Memorandum of Understanding<br>(MoU), Code of Conduct and a series of eight<br>other policy statements. The principles of<br>these are required, under the MoU, to be<br>followed by our Ugandan partners, NKKD<br>WATSAN, to the full extent that they are<br>relevant to operations in Uganda.<br>Sadly July 2020 saw the sudden death from<br>heart failure of our Treasurer, Stephen Bullett,<br>who is sorely missed. Fortunately we were<br>able to find an able and worthy replacement in<br>Alison Fergusson. The global pandemic<br>played havoc with the whole cycle of<br>WATSAN’s responsibilities, from fund-raising<br>in the UK through to teaching and training<br>activities in Uganda. We were saved from<br>disaster by our regular donors here, and by<br>special Ugandan government dispensation for<br>vehicle movement and construction work to<br>continue during lockdown. However a key part<br>of our work, the health and hygiene education<br>and training component, which accompanies<br>every hardware intervention, and especially in<br>schools, was brought to a halt for many<br>months<br>by<br>restrictions<br>on<br>community<br>gatherings in Uganda. We managed a mini-<br>furlough scheme for the staff involved in that<br>work, andwe providedfunds torelieve our|

|Group visits by UK supporters to the project,|
|three in 2017 and another two in 2018, have|
|generated lasting interest and generous|
|support for the programme. There were no|
|tours or Trustee visits to the field during 2019,|
|mainly because plans had been made to|
|coincide with celebratory events planned in|
|Kinkiizi Diocese in 2020. Sadly the pandemic|
|kept UK personnel out of Uganda throughout|
|2020.|
|Total income for the year, despite the|
|pandemic, and without our biennial Walk for|
|Water this year, was £66,689, compared to|
|£67,461 last year. £58,831 was despatched to|
|the field. Our project Toyota Hilux truck, which|
|was acquired second-hand in early 2018|
|within Uganda, continued to prove expensive|
|to maintain. Programme management costs,|
|in support of the activities described below,|
|were met in the sum of £24,300. These|
|included management staff salaries, office|
|and vehicle maintenance costs, including|
|almost £5,500 for repairs to the project|
|vehicle, and the cost of the annual audit. There|
|were direct contributions for the completion of|
|the Kihihi Hill project (£8200) and smaller|
|school projects at KInyasano, St Williams and|
|Nyakabungo (£15,900), plus £7,200 for|
|general sustainability work, including the|
|reconstruction of a low yield spring. Almost|
|£3,000 was spent on Covid 19 material,|
|hardship relief and furlough payments.|
|**IN UGANDA**|
|Although reported incidence of Covid 19 was|
|low, Uganda was locked down from March|
|until late in the year.  Permission was granted|
|for site construction work to continue, but not|
|for<br>education<br>and<br>training<br>work.<br>An|
|independent audit of the programme and|
|accounts for the year ended 30 September,|
|2019, funded by the Support Group, was|
|completed in September this year, with a|
|positive outcome. In-country fundraising has|
|understandably been thwarted this year due to|
|Covid 19 restrictions. Two Ugandan Walks-|
|for-Water were held in 2018 and 2019.|
|Total expenditure incurred directly by our|
|partners in Uganda during 2020 was £80,000,|
|compared to last year’s £81,000. The Kihihi|
|Hill project, commenced in May 2019, was|
|completed with the commissioning of 3 water|
|storage tanks, 3 latrines and a bath shelter on|
|30th. June. The second and final phase of the|
|**Buhunga Gravity Flow Scheme,**which had|
|awaited funds from TearFund since early|
|2017, had been commenced in October 2019.|





Its 11.5 km. of pipeline and 23 tapstands along with sanitation structures and a clothes washing station were commissioned on Sept. 22[nd] this year. At **Kinyasano School** 3 latrines were constructed for use by the girls, boys, and staff respectively. After some delay, whilst a sharing agreement was negotiated with the local community, the community spring at **Nyakabungo** was reconstructed, and a proportion of the yield piped into the school, the remainder reserved for the local community. A low yield spring was reconstructed at **Kishararo** , and a composting toilet at **St William’s School.** A total of 5000 people benefited from the schemes commissioned during 2020.
