It is estimated that less than 1% of the 3 million people in Kenya living with mental disabilities, receive an education. The Trust’s aim is help these ‘forgotten’ children to receive specialist education and support within a regular school environment. **TAR** JANUARY 2018 3 During the course of the financial year Kivuli Trust fundraised to support the Gilgil Special School’s carers and children during the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as provide maintenance for the 2 x boarding hostels. ## Funds raised went towards: - Providing weekly food parcels including essential items such as food and personal hygiene products **Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)** - Paying the salaries of 14 staff – carers, cooks, groundsmen & security guards even as the schools were closed. Salaries were reduced by 20% between the months of April and December - • Maintenance & painting of both hostels The Trustees confirm that they have had regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on Public Benefit in the Trustee meetings. **TAR** JANUARY 2018 4 ## **Additional details of objectives and activities (Optional information)** You **may choose** to include further statements, where relevant, about: - policy on grantmaking; - policy programme related investment; - contribution made by volunteers. A further objective of the Trust is to change the attitude towards disability in the surrounding community by visibly demonstrating that children with disabilities have a place in schools. By building hostels within the grounds of mainstream schools the Trust aims to promote acceptance of children with disability from the youngest of ages. The contribution of our donors goes a long way to helping us to achieve our objectives: We are extremely grateful to: - Forrester Trust who made a generous donation towards postCovid assistance - ANON child sponsor who is now covering the cost of a fulltime physiotherapist/medical support worker who started in March 2021 - Marvelous Margaret who made masks which were sold to support the children - Food parcel donors & those who permanently or temporarily increased child sponsorship donations - Oundle School for donations (unrestricted) from STA & New Houses - Tills, Jake, Hugh & Malachi who previously volunteered at Kivuli and raised over £2.5k - Nick Garratt (son of Beryl) for donation from her funeral of over £300 - Sam Sherwin (a young man with CP) who delivered eggs in Oundle raising money for food parcels - John Welford from Australia who made a donation after his visit during the year **TAR** JANUARY 2018 5 ## Section D Achievements and erformance p **Summary of the main** This year Kivuli Trust raised £41,093 through fundraising initiatives to **achievements of the charity** help fund the annual operation of the 2 hostels. **during the year** This was an unexpected year with the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in mid-March. Schools were closed by the Government in late March and remained closed for the remainder of 2020. They only reopened in January 2021. Given the lack of social welfare in Kenya and the low socio-economic backgrounds of the children, we made the decision to re-allocate ‘sponsor-a-child’ funds towards food parcels delivered to the homes of the most vulnerable 15 children, between June 2020 and December 2020. We continued to financially support the 16 people employed at the hostels - carers, cooks, security guards and groundsmen. From January 2021, when the children returned, all these employees held renewed Certificates of Good Conduct from the Kenyan Govt. The hostels accommodated 68 children between January and April 2021, providing them with full pastoral care, and the kitchen fed over 100+ children with a hot, nutritious lunch every day during term time. The two hostels provide safe, secure accommodation for 68 children, enabling them to learn essential life skills and to attend the Gilgil Special School. For the first time in their lives, these children received an education and chance in life. Instead of being hidden and abused, they became accepted by their families and the wider community. The positive and sustainable impact this has on attitudes to disability is profound. This flagship project remains a ‘Centre of Excellence’ (as declared by the Kenyan Government), and an example of how disabled children, given the right support, can be given a worthwhile education. In January 2021 we re-introduced the dental programme and physiotherapy programme. John our physiotherapist comes twice a week from Gilgil Hospital and works with 15 children who have physical disabilities requiring exercise and treatment.
