## EDUCATION AND WELLNESS CENTRE – LEICESTER

Despite the continuing pandemic and the problems this caused to both the ability to run our live educational workshops, the charity focused efforts on providing these online so that patients and carers were able to feel supported.

The charity continued to offer a support group throughout the winter and spring of 2021, once restrictions lifted in July the charity slowly began to resume educational events at the Centre. These have been welcomed by patients who are desperate for the support they provide.

The online work continued and in September 2021 the charity launched its new website which included our innovative Healing Hub, which will take the charity’s support wherever it is needed. The Hub would host prerecorded video content, a patient and carers forum, on demand courses, live streamed events and more. From its launch in September to the end of December 2021 almost 100 patients and carers (from all over the UK) had registered on the Healing Hub.

## **Achievements and performance (continued)**

The charity received a grant at the end of 2021 to write 6 new courses for the Healing Hub in 2022, these are:

Juicing for Health Nutrition Eating with the Seasons: 4 parts (Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn)

As the UK approached the end of 2021, and the dawn of a new year, the UK is still not free of the issues of COVID-19 or further restrictions. Fortunately, should further restrictions or lockdowns be put in place, we know that we will be able to continue to support those who need our help both locally and throughout the UK.

We were very fortunate to receive the following funding in 2021 towards our online program of support.

Ann Rylands Small Donations £1,000 Leicestershire County Council £3,000 Gerson Support Group £35,000 Florence Turner Trust £500 Ann Bury (COVID-19 Study) £25,000

## Visitors to Centre

Throughout 2021, the charity welcomed visitors to the Health and Wellness Centre on an appointment basis, to reduce risk of COVID-19 to patients, employees and visitors. These visits were for workshops/wellness sessions and complementary therapies.

## Educational Workshops and Events

A total of 156 workshops/wellness sessions were held in 2021, split as follows:

|Centre Based Sessions|58 workshops/wellness sessions|
|---|---|
|Online/Zoom Sessions|71 workshops/wellness sessions|
|Hybrid Sessions*|27 workshops/wellness sessions|

Hybrid sessions are held in person at the centre and streamed live through our online Healing Hub.

Although normality hadn’t returned by 2021, we were very fortunate to have been able to continue to support clients both locally and throughout the UK.

## **Achievements and performance (continued)**

These sessions are a lifeline to those diagnosed with cancer; the impact of a cancer diagnosis and the treatment can be traumatic for not only the cancer patient but also their carer/family. We were fortunate to be able to increase our complementary therapy sessions in 2021.

## WEBSITE/SOCIAL MEDIA

The charity launched its brand new website in September 2021, this coincided with a rebrand to a more modern logo which is more appealing to all age groups.

The new website was completely overhauled with new brighter sections on how we support people with cancer, how people can support the charity and our innovative Healing Hub.

In 2021, we planned to launch a new web-based support program called TAC Connected, which would focus on our new LEAP Support Program. The web-based support program was re-named the Healing Hub, which better fits into the TAC ethos, with the LEAP support program sitting discretely at the back of the Healing Hub, ensuring that we work to provide the four elements (Learning, Empowerment, Action and Purpose).

The Healing Hub provides online support and includes: Cooking Videos Meditation Videos Expert Videos Exercise and Self Soothing Videos Member Forum Live Streamed Events

We are very active on social media, specifically the charity’s Facebook page.

We now have 3,851 ‘Likes’ on Facebook.

Other social media accounts such as Twitter, Tik Tok, NextDoor, Instagram and LinkedIn were also used in 2021.

##  **Fundraising activities and income generation**

For the past 13 years TAC has been using a Fundraising Consultant to raise money through a direct mail program. The company, Market Development Group (MDG) has been in operation since 1978 and has worked with some of the largest and oldest charities. Their method of fundraising is very successful and has raised adequate funds to meet the ongoing needs of TAC for the past 11 years.

Not only does the direct mail program raise funds for the TAC's programs but also educates the public about the dangers of cancer and the need for early detection of cancer and any similar or related diseases. Medical research has proven that early detection of cancer and similar or related diseases has saved lives by treating the disease at an early stage.

Located in Washington, DC, MDG is a full service direct marketing consulting firm with 20+ employees, providing clients with turn key services, including the following:

- Program analysis, strategic planning and fiscal projecting

- Copywriting

- Full service creative art department with extensive art library

- List research, list brokerage and management

- Direct mail production and management

- Marketing research

Lawrence MacKay, Chairman and President, Kimberly Aldridge, Executive Director and the UK office staff work closely with representatives of MDG to prepare fundraising packages; scheduling, package content, copy accuracy, package budget, testimonies and package educational material.

The main source of income for TAC is the monthly educational/fundraising promo package. This promo package is mailed to a database of committed donors. The majority of the contents of the promo package (85%) is educational; encouraging donors to practice early detection and wellness life-style living standards, like eating a balanced diet, exercising, drinking eight glasses of water daily, practicing relaxation techniques, getting a good night sleep and reducing stress. Donors who indicate that they do not want to receive this package are removed from the database immediately. The charity has taken the decision to not use door to door or telephone fundraising as this is intruding on peoples personal space and time and it puts pressure on people to donate.

TAC is a member of the Fundraising Regulator.

## Reputation

The TAC Education and Wellness Centre is creating a very positive reputation for the charity as it demonstrates programs that assist people living with cancer or similar conditions. Many testimonials have been given by those we support and their families.

## Educating the public

Between the TAC Education and Wellness Centre, the monthly promo packages and the website, a vast amount of educational material is being presented to the public.

**(A company limited by guarantee)**

## **TRUSTEES' REPORT (CONTINUED) FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2021**

## **Financial review**

##  **Going concern**

After making appropriate enquiries, the trustees have a reasonable expectation that the charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. For this reason, they continue to adopt the going concern basis in preparing the financial statements. Further details regarding the adoption of the going concern basis can be found in the Accounting Policies.

The charity has sourced all relevant and available support to ensure that the charity can continue, and although unclear what impact the COVID-19 outbreak will have on the longer term, they have been informed by Government Guidance the issue will be time limited. The Trustees have assessed the position of the charity, the financial support they have received and the available reserves and believes that the charity has adequate resources to continue operating for the foreseeable future. With this in mind the Trustees believe that the charity has considered and concluded that the preparation of the financial statements on a going concern basis is appropriate.

##  **Reserves policy**

The major risk to the charity is reliance on private fundraising, donations and legacies. As an organisation relying on voluntary income, our policy is to hold adequate reserves to enable the charity to respond to any difficult unexpected events such as the recent COVID-19 pandemic. It is the policy of the charity that unrestricted funds which have not been designated for a specific use should be maintained at a level equivalent to between three and six month’s expenditure. On 31 December 2021 the charity held restricted reserves of £42,180 (2020 - £8,563), and unrestricted reserves of £427,111 (2020 - £266,371). Included within unrestricted reserves is £200,000 of funds designated towards a potential future property purchase. Actual free reserves, calculated as unrestricted reserves less designated funds and fixed assets, amount to £211,879. The Trustees consider the reserves level at 31 December 2021 are in line with target.

##  **Principal funding**

The Charity received £907,781 (2020 - £847,858) during the year from voluntary donations and legacies. Included within this total the charity has been able to generate income from grants this year amounting £69,300 (2020 - £14,000). The charity received £8,382 (2020 - £3,786) from workshops, classes and events. The net assets of the charity as at 31 December 2021 amounted to £469,291 (2020 - £274,934).

## **TRUSTEES' REPORT (CONTINUED) FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2021**

## **Structure, governance and management**

##  **Constitution**

Together Against Cancer (TAC) is a company limited by guarantee, registered in England and Wales number 06471938, its registered charity number 1123665. Its governing document is its Memorandum and Articles of Association, dated, 11 March 2008.

The trustees, who are also the directors for the purpose of company law, and who served during the year are:

Mr Lawrence Mackay Mrs Joy Mackay Mrs Merra Bacos Tabay Mrs Sarah Jackson Mr Edwin Bulaon

None of the trustees have any beneficial interest in the company. All the trustees are members of the company and guarantee to contribute £1 in the event of a winding up.

The CEO is Larry Mackay and the day to day management of the UK centre is delegated to the Centre Manager Melanie Gamble and the Education and Wellness manager Stephen Gamble. Larry Mackay approves any new services which require a contract signing or are over the value of £500.

##  **Methods of appointment or election of Trustees**

There is no formal method for recruiting new charity trustees. Each current trustee can make recommendations if the need arises to replace or add a new trustee. At the annual board meeting in December of each year trustees are appointed and elected to serve for the approved period of time.

##  **Policies adopted for the induction and training of Trustees**

New trustees are encouraged to visit the UK Education and Wellness Centre and meet the Centre Manager and Education and Wellness Manager, learn more about the services provided and meet the staff and volunteers. New trustees are encouraged to obtain a copy of the charity commission booklet The Essential Trustee: what you need to know, what you need to do.

##  **Pay policy for key management personnel**

With over 40 years of administrative work for non profit corporations, Larry Mackay has developed an understanding for what is fair and reasonable compensation for management positions at a non profit corporation. Salaries are determined by the importance of the position being filled, the experience of the person being hired and the ability of the charity to meet this obligation.

## **TRUSTEES' REPORT (CONTINUED) FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2021**

## **Structure, governance and management (continued)**

##  **Risk management**

The trustees have assessed the major risks to which the charity is exposed, and are satisfied that systems are in place to mitigate exposure to the major risks. the major risks identified are as follows:

## Raising enough money to meet the yearly budget

The Board of Trustees and the management team have been actively pursuing fundraising personnel to assist TAC in its fundraising efforts. When it comes to raising money for charity work there are only a few successful methods that a charity can pursue. The most successful over the years is to develop a database of committed donors who will support the efforts of the charity over an extended period of time. Once the database is established it is in the best interest of the charity to begin to communicate with these donors, especially the ones who have given repeatedly over and over again with the substantial donations, as to their willingness to make larger donations, capital donations or legacy bequests.

## **Plans for future periods**

Together Against Cancer will continue to support worthy organisations who provide care and assistance to those with cancer, specifically those patients who use integrated medicine as part of their fight against cancer.

Our pledge for 2022 is:

- To build upon the success of our Healing Hub and deliver 125 wellness workshops/sessions (in-person, online and hybrid sessions).

- Continue to offer phone support to our more vulnerable clients (who are shielding or unable to travel to the centre).

- Undertake a Pilot to access the need to reduce the age of our patients to 13 years old.

- Produce 6 on-demand workshops for the Healing Hub.

- Carry out a small research project in conjunction with Osmio Water to use Hydrogen/Oxygen therapy.

- Hold a family orientated Health and Wellness Show.

- Build on the successes and contacts we have built up in 2021.

- Continue working on the possibility of a health screening program in 2022.

- Move to larger premises as we have outgrown existing leased property.

We have 13 part-time and full-time staff members: ranging from multi-skilled staff members (the core team), administration, donation processing, fundraising, videographer/social media, and therapists.

In 2021, we were supported by 28 volunteers ranging from guest speakers, receptionists, fundraising assistance, admin/office, who kindly volunteered 696 hours to the charity.

## **Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of Together Against Cancer ('the charity')**

I report to the charity trustees (who are also Directors for the purpose of company law) on my examination of the financial statements of the Together Against Cancer ('the charitable company') for the year ended 31 December 2021 which comprise of the Statement of Financial Activities, the Balance Sheet, the Statement of Cash Flows and related notes.

As the trustees of charitable company you are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 (‘the 2006 Act’).

An independent examination does not involve gathering all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently does not cover all the matters that an auditor considers in giving their opinion on the financial statements. The planning and conduct of an audit goes beyond the limited assurance that an independent examination can provide. Consequently I express no opinion as to whether the financial statements present a ‘true and fair’ view and my report is limited to those specific matters set out in the independent examiner’s statement.

**TOGETHER AGAINST CANCER**

**(A company limited by guarantee)**

## **NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2021**

## **1. General information**

Together Against Cancer is an incorporated charity registered with the Charity Commission. It's registered office is Unit 2, Charnwood Edge Business Park, Syston Road, Cossington, Leicester, LE7 4UZ. The Company registration number is 06471938 and the registered Charity number is 1123665.

## **2. Accounting policies**

## **2.1 Basis of preparation of financial statements**

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) - Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015), the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) and the Companies Act 2006.

Together Against Cancer meets the definition of a public benefit entity under FRS 102. Assets and liabilities are initially recognised at historical cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant accounting policy.

## **2.2 Company Status**

The Charity is a company limited by guarantee. The members of the company are the Trustees named on page 1. In the event of the charity being wound up, the liability in respect of the guarantee is limited to £1 per member of the charity.

## **2.3 Going concern**

The Trustees assess whether the use of going concern is appropriate, i.e. whether there are any material uncertainties related to events or conditions that may cast significant doubt over the ability of the charity to continue as a going concern. The Trustees make this assessment in the respect of the period of at least one year form the date of authorisation for issue of the financial statements and have concluded that the charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future and there are no material uncertainties about the charity's ability to continue as a going concern, thus they continue to adopt the going concern basis of accounting in preparing the financial statements.

## **2.4 Income**

All income is recognised once the charity is legally entitled to it after any performance conditions have been met, the amounts can be measured reliably, and is probable that income will be received.

Cash donations are recognised on receipt. Other donations are recognised once the charity has been notified of the donation, unless performance conditions require deferral of the amount. Income tax recoverable in relation to donations received under Gift Aid or deed of covenant is recognised at the time of donation.

Legacies are recognised on receipt or otherwise if the charity has been notified of an impending distribution, the amount is known, and the receipt is expected. If the amount is not know, the legacy is treated as a contingent asset.

Grants are included in the Statement of financial activities on a receivable basis. The balance of income received for specific purposes but not expended during the period is shown in the relevant funds on the Balance sheet. Where income is received in advance of entitlement of receipt, its recognition is deferred and included in creditors as deferred income. Where entitlement occurs before income is received, the income is accrued.

## **NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2021**

## **2. Accounting policies (continued)**

## **2.4 Income (continued)**

Gifts in kind are accounted for at a reasonable estimate of their value to the charity or the amount actually realised. Gifts in Kind for sale or distribution are included in the accounts as gifts only when sold or distributed by the charity. Gifts in kind for use by the charity are included in the Statement of Financial Activities as incoming resources when reasonable.

## **2.5 Expenditure**

Expenditure is recognised on an accruals basis, inclusive of Value Added Tax.

Expenditure included in costs of generating funds are the charitable company's marketing costs..

Expenses relating to charitable activities relate to grants paid and gifts in kind. Support costs are also included within this category of expenditure which include consultancy and office support.

Grants payable are charged in the year when the offer is made except in those cases where the offer is conditional, such grants being recognised as expenditure when the conditions attaching are fulfilled. Grants offered subject to conditions which have not been met at the year end are noted as a commitment, but not accrued as expenditure.

## **2.6 Fund accounting**

General funds are unrestricted funds which are available for use at the discretion of the Trustees in furtherance of the general objectives of the charity and which have not been designated for other purposes.

Restricted funds are funds which are to be used in accordance with specific restrictions imposed by donors or which have been raised by the charity for particular purposes. The costs of raising and administering such funds are charged against the specific fund. The aim and use of each restricted fund is set out in the notes to the financial statements.

## **2.7 Operating leases**

Rentals paid under operating leases are charged to the Statement of financial activities on a straight line basis over the lease term.

## **2.8 Tangible fixed assets and depreciation**

Tangible fixed assets costing £500 or more are capitalised and recognised when future economic benefits are probable and the cost or value of the asset can be measured reliably.

Tangible fixed assets are initially recognised at cost. After recognition, under the cost model, tangible fixed assets are measured at cost less accumulated depreciation and any accumulated impairment losses. All costs incurred to bring a tangible fixed asset into its intended working condition should be included in the measurement of cost.

Depreciation is charged so as to allocate the cost of tangible fixed assets less their residual value over their estimated useful lives .

Depreciation is provided on the following basis:

Fixtures and fittings - 20% on a straight line basis Office and computer equipment - 33% - 50% on a straight line basis

## **NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2021**

## **2. Accounting policies (continued)**

## **2.9 Stocks**

Stocks are valued at the lower of cost and estimated selling price less costs to complete to sell. Cost comprises direct materials and where applicable, direct labour costs and those overheads that have been incurred in bringing the stocks to their present location and condition. Items held for distribution at no or normal consideration are measured the lower of replacement costs and cost.

## **2.10 Cash at bank and in hand**

Cash at bank and in hand includes cash and short-term highly liquid investments with a short maturity of three months or less from the date of acquisition or opening of the deposit or similar account.

## **2.11 Financial instruments**

The charity has elected to apply the provisions of Section 11 'Basic Financial Instruments' and Section 12 'Other Financial Instruments Issues' of FRS 102 to all of its financial instruments.

Financial instruments are recognised in the charity's balance sheet when the charity becomes party to the contractual provisions of the instrument.

Financial assets and liabilities are offset, with the net amounts presented in the financial statements, when there is a legally enforceable right to set off the recognised amounts and there is an intention to settle on a net basis or to realise the asset and settle the liability simultaneously.

## **Basis financial assets**

Basic financial assets, which include debtors and cash and bank balances, are initially measured at transaction price including transaction costs and are subsequently carried out at amortised cost using the effective interest method unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, where the transaction is measured at the present value of future receipts discounted at a market rate of interest. Financial assets classified as receivable within one year are not amortised.

## **Basis financial liabilities**

Basis financial liabilities, including creditors, are initially recognised at transaction price unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, where the debt instrument is measured at the present value of the future receipts discounted at a market rate of interest. Financial liabilities classified as payable within one year are not amortised.

Debt instruments are subsequently carried at amortised cost, using the effective interest rate method.

Trade creditors are obligations to pay for goods or services that have been acquired in the ordinary course of operations from suppliers. Amounts payable are classified as current liabilities if payment is due within one year or less. If not, they are presented as non-current liabilities. Trade creditors are recognised initially at transaction price and subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method.

## **2.12 Employee benefits**

The costs of any unused holiday entitlement is recognised in the period in which the employee's services are received.

Termination benefits are recognised immediately as an expense when the charity is demonstrably committed to terminate the employment of an employee or to provide termination benefits.

## **NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2021**

## **2. Accounting policies (continued)**

## **2.13 Pensions**

The charity operates a defined contribution pension scheme and the pension charge represents the amounts payable by the charity to the fund in respect of the year.

## **3. Critical accounting estimates and areas of judgment**

Estimates and judgments are continually evaluated and are based on historical experience and other factors, including expectations of future events that are believed to be reasonable under the circumstances.

Critical accounting estimates and assumptions:

The charity makes estimates and assumptions concerning the future. The resulting accounting estimates and assumptions will, by definition, seldom equal the related actual results. The estimates and assumptions that have a significant risk of causing a material adjustment to the carrying amounts of assets and liabilities within the next financial year are discussed below.

## **Useful economic lives of tangible assets**

The annual depreciation charge for tangible assets is sensitive to changes in the estimated useful economic lives and residual values of the assets. The useful economic lives and residual values are reassessed annually. They are amended when necessary to reflect current estimates, based on technological advancement, future investments, economic utilisation and the physical condition of the assets. See note 17 for the carrying amount of the tangible assets, and note 2 for the useful economic lives for each class of assets.
