They They survey survey data data offered offered invaluable invaluable insights insights[into] into families,[families,] children children and and young young people's people’s motivations motivations for for visiting visiting museums. museums. It It is is clear clear that that families families value value museums museums as as spaces spaces to to enjoy enjoy spending spending time time together, together, learning learning and and having having fun. fun. They They value value interactivity, interactivity, clear[clear] communication communication and and transparency transparency about about costs costs and and value value for for money. money. They They want want museums museums to to reflect reflect their[their] local local communities communities and and enable enable them them to to engage engage with with contemporary contemporary[issues] issues[such] such as as[the] the climate[climate] emergency emergency or or misinformation.[misinformation.]
Unfortunately, Unfortunately, the the surveying surveying shows shows that that families families still still find find visiting visiting museums museums stressful stressful and and uncomfortable uncomfortable and and expensive. expensive, We We also[also] still still heard heard stories[stories] of of families families with with[small] small children children feeling feeling judged judged for for their their behaviour behaviour by by museum museum staff. staff.

Youth Youth Panel[Panel]
The The Kids Kids in in Museums Museums Youth Youth[Panel] Panel[is] is a a group group of of 16-25[16-25] year year[olds] olds[from] from all[all] over over[the] the UK.[UK.] Four Four new new young young people people joined joined the the Panel Panel in in April April 2024. 2024. To To support support[their] their introduction introduction to to[the] the Panel,[Panel,] we we[piloted] piloted a a peer peer mentoring mentoring programme, programme, pairing pairing more more experienced[experienced][Panel] Panel[members] members with[with] new new[joiners.] joiners.
During During[the] the year, year,[Panel] Panel[members] members were were[a] a central[central] part part of[of] several[ several][Kids] Kids in[in][Museums] Museums[activities] activities including[including] shortlisting shortlisting and and judging judging the the Family Family Friendly Friendly Museum Museum Award Award and and[updating] updating our our online[online] resources. resources.[They] They also[also] had had a a busy[busy] year year working working on on three[three] new new[projects.] projects.
